It’s scary to think that a teacher didn’t notice the condescending assumption that viewers threw out and did not read their manuals.
Thank you for making this video. It’s informative. I hope you realize a large percentage of people are auditory learners and truly learn while they multitask or drive by just listening to information.
Also, there does exist a population of English readers who have English as a decks language, or can not read at all.
Perhaps you feel like it’s silly to be explaining these low level basics
BUT did you consider maybe the viewer is bright and decided to listen to some info before they purchased the radio?
Please, share info without having to justify it and assume about why someone is viewing. Do you care? We are learning from you, and you got a view!

    • @rik7373
      @rik7373 4 месяца назад +1

It depends on your location. These radios work on frequenties that require a sight to sight connection. What I mean with this, is that every object between you and the other opperator, decreases the range drastically. I live in a heavy populated area and my radio covers less then a mile reliably. What I mean with reliably, is that you can move with the radio without any trouble.
I have also tested around 10 km. I stood in a small flat (15 meters high) and the other person stood in his attic of his house. But we still couldn't get a connection. But, still you could buy a set and try to see if you could achieve 10 miles. Maybe your area has less noise or has fewer objects between your houses, compared to mine.

As a BF UV-5R newb, I consider myself particularly lucky to have stumbled across your videos. As soon as I realized the black rubber thingy could be used as a handle, I decided to buy a pair. Of radios, that is. I have, so far, been unable to keep a solitary sip of my morning coffee inside my mouth while watching your YT channel. May have to start collecting the T-shirts as well. Anyway... as a non-conformist, I am having difficultly finding info on programming the little jewels using my MAC. Thanks to your videos, I can program the radios by hand, of course, and have used the provided manual to light my barbecue. FYI have successfully loaded CHIRP onto my laptop but the programming cable that came in the package from the big box retailer along with all the other trinkets is either (a) junk, or (b) the driver provided is meant to confuse and occupy my time while the ground invasion commences. Not sure which. Anybody out there have any luck using a Mac to successfully program their bofungs w/ CHIRP? I'm gonna wear my fingers out otherwise...

    • @TheNotaRubicon

I use CHIRP on all of my Macs with zero issues, as do millions of others.. I have never needed to install any driver - i just plugged in the cable and it worked. If you suspect the cable is junk I recommend the "red cable" from BuyTwoWayRadios.com - those cables work with MacOS.

That is a very useful bit of kit. It even has FM so you can listen to domestic (music) radio channels. In England we are advised to listen to BBC Radio 4 for updates in SHTF scenarios. It is essentially a marine radio, the standard practice is to start out with channel 16. So everyone has that on as standard (ships, boats coastguard) and then when you want to start a conversation you switch to an 'empty' channel. They also have two power settings. So if you want to talk to a boat that might be 100 meters away you use the channel with less power. This extends it's use time and doesn't stop others out of range using the same channel. Sadly they don't say it's waterproof. But for the price and features an excellent bit of kit.

Thanks for this detailed guide and for keeping it as simple as possible. Question: I have a midland FRS radio ($39 for 2) and just got a UV-5R (applying for license as well). I was testing the 5R (receiving only!) and noticed that channel 18 on the midland FRS received a clear broadcast (very clear and loud) but the VR5 was not picking up the signal. I adjusted the squelch to 2 and I could hear lots of static along with the broadcast this time (but very weak). Frequency is 462.6250 (channel 18). With a friend we tested the channel and even his scanner bc125 was not picking up any broadcast. So it seems like the midland FRS radio have something both the 5R and the bc125 do not have? What do you think might be going on here?

Randy, if this was truly a UV-5R Quick-Start guide for dummies you would include the one thing missing from Section 5 of the manual.
    ✔ 5.1 Attach the antenna.
✔ 5.2 Attach the belt clip.
    ✔ 5.3 Plug in the speaker mic/headset.
    ✔ 5.4 Attach the battery
❌ Attach the wrist strap to the strap buckle.
I hope in your next UV-5R guide for dummies you include a 5 minute segment on how to perform the 2nd most important task after enabling the roger beep.

Excellent guidance and not only this video, but all of your videos, sir! I am a total rookie in this area and have the GT3 version but currently the range of the radio disappoints. It is used in town (now, but really needed for emergencies in my part of the world!), not line of sight but no hills or such, obstructing. What confounds me' is that the "cheapie" Baofengs with 11 set channels, outperform the GT3's! I understand that higher frequencies have lesser range, but I an sure it is only programming parameters on my side. Without trying the decipher all the complicated calculations re the Arial lengths vs frequencies, wide or narrow, etc, etc, what would you suggest, and without putting you on the spot, the optimum settings should be for max range (within limits of course)?!

I'm still confused on differences between basic UHF radios/ walkie talkies, FRS, GMRS, HAM, and how the baofeng UV5R can be used to talk with most, if not all of the radios on the various channels. I am a big chimp and not very smart.
