Googling for instructions is nowhere near as comprehensible as a video here. I’ve been trying for a while. Even with an English manual and in a font size I can easily read it gets pretty convoluted. The videos here make all the difference.
I'm the same way... you get a credit card sized manual - That makes no sense at all IF you can read it. makes the radio worthless until you get a video and some of those the poster goes through it too fast for those that know nothing at all. ** Consider your "audience" knows nothing at all.
Great video! Had trouble following this for programming channels at first. Note that you cannot overwrite an already saved channel: if you see CH-xxx, you must delete it first (menu option 28) before you can save the current frequency. In your demo at 16:50 , you are trying to save over top of an assigned channel (CH-001) and you get the "lady voice" saying "transmitting memory" which means it failed. Later, at 17:19 you program onto channel 002 (an empty channel, notice no CH- displayed) and get the "lady voice" saying "receiving memory" which confirms you have successfully programmed the channel. Hope this helps anyone who got tripped up on that like I did!

I was arrested in Kentucky for having the radio in my car. In Kentucky it is against the law to have a radio in your car that can receive police frequencies unless you are a ham radio operator or emergency personell. I had my car impounded, thrown in jail and had to go to court. My case was thrown out when I showed my ham license to the judge. I was arrested by Kenton County Police Department officers Gary Helton and Trevor Rohe. I never broke any laws but these two so called "officers" did not know the laws.
Sounds really unbelievable. anyone can build a radio, and anyone can then listen to the police. Thats why dutch police now use P2000 and C2000 (maybe others). (the C one is encrypted), its based on TETRA. Maybe show them these, the tech is there.
Under federal laws, anyone can have a transmitting radio in their vehicle so long as the user is not impeding agencies from normal operations. You do NOT need a license to have a radio or even monitor radio frequencies of any kind. So long as you are NOT broadcasting without a license. Even if you DO have a license NO law enforcement officer is allowed to prevent or confiscate any radio transmitter from a civilian, unless that specific civilian is committing a crime. Also transmitting radios falls under Federal Laws and not city or state. Only the federal government is allowed to say who can or can not have transmitting radios in their possession. You can sue the city and the state for negligence & false arrest and detainment on a device that falls under "Federal jurisdiction laws" Hence the reason why when you get your license its through the FCC which is a Federal Agency, not city or state. Kenton County Police Department violated federal laws when their reasoning to arrest/detain you was because of the radio transmitter device. punitive damages & compensation can be obtained via negligence laws along with other federal guideline laws regarding detainment due to federal reasons. Basically a city or state police is not allowed to carry out law enforcement on a federal level. ONLY federal police and agencies are allowed to do so, such as FCC & FBI.
I love that you open with the ones I bought multiples of like the BF-F8+ Dual-Band and UV-5RX3 Tri-Band ... I also picked up a number of backup batteries, much longer 1/4, 1/2 & 5/8 Wave Antennas, External PTT Mics, just about every accessory available because they all come in handy. Both Baofeng and Radioddity have great products at pocket change prices. I picked up a 10W Unit that smacks a good number of our local repeaters from right here on my couch. If you haven't got a HAM Radio License, I highly recommend you do. It's very simple, multiple choice... Just Do It
Living Survival I noticed you are doing what I want to with listening police, fire etc. I also noticed when you went to radio reference it had the frequencys but the radio has 6 digits the radio reference has more digits than the radio, how do I type them into the radio and listen to them?
This was *really* helpful. I've had the baofeng box sitting here for weeks (just staring at me). I'm studying for my technician's license and new to all of this. But I know I need to get with it to be ready for the day the ground moves. I got an email about your video and decided it was time! SO glad I did. THANK YOU for the excellent walk through. I am from Ontario Canada. Just starting out with Ham Radio but have been monitoring emergency bands since I was a Kid. Great explanation of this low cost radio....I will definitely be getting one. Amazing how large portable emergency radios used to be and cost. Something I can use while I study then pass my Ham course.😎

Thank you, down and dirty basics on how to get started with a new device saved me a lot of time and energy and actually learned more about the radio through less information and more hands on. Great video, followed along with my radio in hand as you walked through your instructions.
I'm not sure if anybody has already posted this or not but on the UV-5R, and on the older model that you have in the video, you should be able to just take the antenna off and then program in the NOAA Weather Radio station. Just make it where you can not receive the station and you should be able to program it in. I know they change this in later models and it is no longer an issue. In the UV-5R that I got in 2015, it allows you to program a frequency manually and save it to a channel whether anybody's talking on it or not at the time.
This is a great radio. Get the technicians license, get the NiFog guide to useful channels and also google the 3+3+3 prepper radio plan. Thanks for sharing this great video!
Good video, Ben! One of the other things you can do is program in the emergency management frequencies and listen to storm spotters. As long as you're strictly listening and not interfering, it's perfectly fine. Just look up your county Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES...pronounced "rayCEES") or Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) groups. They will operate on VHF and UHF repeaters. You can hear weather information generally 10 minutes or so before it's on TV or radio, which in a severe weather situation can give you enough time to seek shelter.
Can any one explain Frequency Mode & Channel Mode ? I pressed BAND button, and it speaks Frequency mode/channel mode, but i dont understood any change in operation. Also can anybody explain selection channel mode, and its functioning ?

Dude you're the best! I sat here for an hour reading the manual feeling like a jackass on how to change the channels that were stored. EVERY WEBSITE and video says channels like its one thing. You've got stored channels, input channels, FM channels, so there was no way to understand what a person was talking about when trying to figure out how to change the channels. Obviously I'm new to this radio so I didn't know you had to be on the VFW/MR side to change to the stored channels. Jesus, you'd think this would be the easiest thing to figure out. So congrats on being the only video that shows this!

By far one of the most useful videos I’ve found. Too many reviews review the product. But don’t explain when to use it and what the purpose is for. I really want to learn land navigation and be able to communicate with friends on hikes in Hawaii.

To save any frequency on a channel: you can only safe a frequency on an empty slot. If you go to the menu and see a 'CH' in front of the channel number, that means there is a frequency saved already in that slot. So, you must delete that channel, first and then go back and save it where you want it. Or, just save it in a channel that does NOT have a 'CH' in front of it and you're set!
@@JawTooth well doing all that does not work, when I go to input a channel it just changes to a different number in the menu, only just just got the piece of crap (UV 5R plus) and it will program and also the bloody software is either for Kenwood, Motorola or another in bloody Chinese, just about to see how well it stands up to being thrown at the wall, piece of crap!!

If I can figure it out after 4-5 days of an hour a day watching videos here and messing with the radio then you can figure it out in a few hours tops. I’ve got channels programmed like police and fire and have been able to talk to my boats vhf and some gmrs and frs walkie talkies
This took a lot of the mystery out of using this little radio. I am ordering the ARRL textbook so I can take my test and be able to TX when needed, and help others if necessary. And the original reason I bought 2 of these radios was to just have a decent FRS or walkie-talkie. LOL. Thanks for your effort at making it understandable!
Just got my UV5R TP in from Amazon. I tried entering my NOAA freq using the same steps you did. It programmed just fine. Even put it on channels 0, 2, 4 and 6. All worked.
The trick to saving NOAA weather: after you tune in the station normally, remove the antenna so that you are not receiving, then you can save the channel.

im an extra class ham, your a great guy and did a nice overview of the radio. The ability to recieve and transmit information to and from a wide range, which may include international or across the country, depends on an HF rig. The VHF radios are nice but they are just local your not going to get more than 100mi with these. I strongly encourage taking the time to get a general license. If you get the general, and actually understand the very basic electronic stuff and practice, you will end up with this capability of no matter what situation, you will be able to scrap something together and communicate over the entire world. I have this, and i dont take it for granted, it feels good having this capability i feel like i would be very valuable in a SHTF situation, not just for rx/tx with what i had on hand, but can rebuild a communication infrastructure from whatever is laying around.
@@RJ-fz7il it is not difficult, pick up the arrl technician study guide, read it, and schedule an exam. The difference between licences mostly dictate the frequencies you can use. The general opens you up to HF (and more) which is an incredibly big part of the hobby

What's wrong with that? Any content creator can ask for support from the viewers if they feel like it. Its not extracting money from folks, some people make their living off RUclips, and they use that money to make more content.
Great video Ben. I really enjoyed and it was easy to follow. For saving an always transmitting channel, my solution was to temporarily unscrew and remove the antenna. Low tech but effective. Keep up the great work!
Perfect little things for things like airsoft, referee, etc. There are a few public use channels out there, just make sure you're using one. If you're not sure ask someone with a license. Some pretty cheap antennas can extend these things out pretty damn far actually. I've seen guys managing to reach out really far.
I find a way to store NOAA.. I tune the right frq. then remove my antenna, then store ch. then put the antenna back... That's how I did without computer.. Lol

These also allow you to tune into local repeaters which broadens greatly the range in which you can listen to others and transmit in case of an emergency.

Living Survival, the TDR (dual standby) is so that it will listen/standby to both frequencies set on the display, with this off you only listen/standby on the selected frequency A or B. Also one of the options that you mention is for transmitting is actually the scan setting (SC-REV), there are three options. The TO is a preset time like the scan button on old radios that would play like 10 seconds of a station. The CO will stay on that frequency as long as there is a transmission being picked up. And SE will stop scanning after a frequency is found that has/had a transmission picked up. Also, I get that this video is intended for listening, but programming the offsets, tones, etc for transmission would be beneficial if this is going to part of your bug out bag as in the event there is that survival/emergency situation that you need to transmit, you won't be able to use local repeaters to reach out on without these items. You are correct that you won't be able to reach very far with these due to power, but you can receive quite a distance as the transmitting power effects receiving. I pick up repeaters 20+ miles away with good clarity on a stock antenna in the Stockton, CA area. Even in the building at 1111 Broadway downtown Oakland, CA I'm able to pick up repeaters about 10 miles away. A great resource for repeaters is repeaterbook.com, there are many emergency service repeaters that are great to have available and they can extend your reach greatly if/when needed. Great video for noobs as I'm on this learning journey myself, I've had mine for 24 hours now. lol Cheers

@Barry Goldwater I'm not sure why it would swap back and forth? That's a new one for me. It can be frustrating, but that's a little bit of the twisted fun, beating a difficult problem that is. Keep in mind you can set it down for a week or two and come back to it later. This radio is only capable of operating between 65-108(Rx only),136-174, 400-520. What approximate region are you operating in, the United States?
@Barry Goldwater You could certianly try these. Make sure to toggle the fly out to "shown" for input frequencies. You should start with a blank channel, input the receiving frequency, save, then input the transmitting frequency and its qualifiers like PL, then save again.

Just received my UV-9R handheld radio, just getting familiar with its functions, got it mainly for getting out in the kayak out in Lake St.CLAIR (nestled in between lake Huron and lake Erie) just off the Detroit river. I'm sure the more I use it, the more will enjoy it. For some reason the NA-771 antenna I ordered does not thread correctly, probably an alignment adjustment. Thank you for your presentation. I find it interesting that a lot of hardcore American "patriots", nationalist militias and "prepper" types have come to embrace this particular brand which is based in communist China. I'd expect such people rather support companies like Bendix, Harris or Motorola which at least are based in US. Not criticizing anyone's freedom to spend his $ as he chooses. Motorola is owned by Lenovo and so is also Chinese. Most American brands still do there manufacturing there. Not sure you can escape using Chinese goods. Maybe if you bought a Korean or Japanese radio, but many of those are made in China too.
I was able to program in the weather channel by first removing the antenna so that it could no longer pick up the broadcast. I then programmed it in, and then reconnected the antenna and was good to go.
Still watching 3 years later! So what I want to know is how do you listen to a channel that has more than 6 digits? For instance, local sheriff's dispatch is xxx-xxxxx and I can only type in xxx-xxx.
It will work perfectly to round it off, although this radio can accept a 0, 25, or 5 as the final digit for you depending on the step size you have entered if memory serves? If not set the step size teeny tiny and punch in something close and work your way to your desired frequency with the arrow keys, that should get you as close as possible
"there is no license required in an emergency situation" Well, yes, but you really should get one anyway, if for no other reason than to help learn how to use it. Sure, you could technically drive without a license in an emergency, but if you've never driven before, you're probably not making it very far.
Remember YOU MUST have a Ham Radio License to talk on these radios. Listening is fine. If you are wanting to just listen get a Scanner to help prevent unintentional transmitting and the possibility of a nice BIG FINE.

I have 3 UV5R's and absolutely love them. Even the 5 watt versions can reach long distances as they have the ability to trigger repeaters.

Can any one explain Frequency Mode & Channel Mode ?
I pressed BAND button, and it speaks Frequency mode/channel mode, but i dont understood any change in operation.
Also can anybody explain selection channel mode, and its functioning ?

It's a firmware bug.
Take the antenna off to stop the incoming signal, when saving that wx channel memory :)

Dude you're the best! I sat here for an hour reading the manual feeling like a jackass on how to change the channels that were stored. EVERY WEBSITE and video says channels like its one thing. You've got stored channels, input channels, FM channels, so there was no way to understand what a person was talking about when trying to figure out how to change the channels. Obviously I'm new to this radio so I didn't know you had to be on the VFW/MR side to change to the stored channels. Jesus, you'd think this would be the easiest thing to figure out. So congrats on being the only video that shows this!
For the weather channel try taking off the antenna and then program, see if that works. I'd like to hear back to see if it did. Great vid!

To save any frequency on a channel: you can only safe a frequency on an empty slot. If you go to the menu and see a 'CH' in front of the channel number, that means there is a frequency saved already in that slot. So, you must delete that channel, first and then go back and save it where you want it. Or, just save it in a channel that does NOT have a 'CH' in front of it and you're set!
I made the same comment. I wonder how many people have pulled their hair out over that omission.

@@JawTooth well doing all that does not work, when I go to input a channel it just changes to a different number in the menu, only just just got the piece of crap (UV 5R plus) and it will program and also the bloody software is either for Kenwood, Motorola or another in bloody Chinese, just about to see how well it stands up to being thrown at the wall, piece of crap!!
@@daveh6179 I was pulling my hair out for a while as well. Not the most patient person. But this is doable. If I can figure it out after 4-5 days of an hour a day watching videos here and messing with the radio then you can figure it out in a few hours tops. I’ve got channels programmed like police and fire and have been able to talk to my boats vhf and some gmrs and frs walkie talkies
This took a lot of the mystery out of using this little radio. I am ordering the ARRL textbook so I can take my test and be able to TX when needed, and help others if necessary. And the original reason I bought 2 of these radios was to just have a decent FRS or walkie-talkie. LOL. Thanks for your effort at making it understandable!
Just got my UV5R TP in from Amazon. I tried entering my NOAA freq using the same steps you did. It programmed just fine. Even put it on channels 0, 2, 4 and 6. All worked.

The trick to saving NOAA weather: after you tune in the station normally, remove the antenna so that you are not receiving, then you can save the channel.
I found that removing the antenna temporarily works to save the weather channel
that's the first thing i thought of... some way of disrupting the incoming radio signal...

im an extra class ham, your a great guy and did a nice overview of the radio. The ability to recieve and transmit information to and from a wide range, which may include international or across the country, depends on an HF rig. The VHF radios are nice but they are just local your not going to get more than 100mi with these. I strongly encourage taking the time to get a general license. If you get the general, and actually understand the very basic electronic stuff and practice, you will end up with this capability of no matter what situation, you will be able to scrap something together and communicate over the entire world. I have this, and i dont take it for granted, it feels good having this capability i feel like i would be very valuable in a SHTF situation, not just for rx/tx with what i had on hand, but can rebuild a communication infrastructure from whatever is laying around.
What's the difference between an extra class ham and a regular class ham license, is it difficult to get a ham license ?
@@RJ-fz7il it is not difficult, pick up the arrl technician study guide, read it, and schedule an exam. The difference between licences mostly dictate the frequencies you can use. The general opens you up to HF (and more) which is an incredibly big part of the hobby

What's wrong with that? Any content creator can ask for support from the viewers if they feel like it. Its not extracting money from folks, some people make their living off RUclips, and they use that money to make more content.
Great video Ben. I really enjoyed and it was easy to follow. For saving an always transmitting channel, my solution was to temporarily unscrew and remove the antenna. Low tech but effective. Keep up the great work!
Perfect little things for things like airsoft, referee, etc. There are a few public use channels out there, just make sure you're using one. If you're not sure ask someone with a license. Some pretty cheap antennas can extend these things out pretty damn far actually. I've seen guys managing to reach out really far.

I find a way to store NOAA.. I tune the right frq. then remove my antenna, then store ch. then put the antenna back... That's how I did without computer.. Lol

These also allow you to tune into local repeaters which broadens greatly the range in which you can listen to others and transmit in case of an emergency.

Living Survival, the TDR (dual standby) is so that it will listen/standby to both frequencies set on the display, with this off you only listen/standby on the selected frequency A or B.
Also one of the options that you mention is for transmitting is actually the scan setting (SC-REV), there are three options. The TO is a preset time like the scan button on old radios that would play like 10 seconds of a station. The CO will stay on that frequency as long as there is a transmission being picked up. And SE will stop scanning after a frequency is found that has/had a transmission picked up.
Also, I get that this video is intended for listening, but programming the offsets, tones, etc for transmission would be beneficial if this is going to part of your bug out bag as in the event there is that survival/emergency situation that you need to transmit, you won't be able to use local repeaters to reach out on without these items.
You are correct that you won't be able to reach very far with these due to power, but you can receive quite a distance as the transmitting power effects receiving. I pick up repeaters 20+ miles away with good clarity on a stock antenna in the Stockton, CA area. Even in the building at 1111 Broadway downtown Oakland, CA I'm able to pick up repeaters about 10 miles away.
A great resource for repeaters is repeaterbook.com, there are many emergency service repeaters that are great to have available and they can extend your reach greatly if/when needed.

@Barry Goldwater I'm not sure why it would swap back and forth? That's a new one for me. It can be frustrating, but that's a little bit of the twisted fun, beating a difficult problem that is. Keep in mind you can set it down for a week or two and come back to it later. This radio is only capable of operating between 65-108(Rx only),136-174, 400-520. What approximate region are you operating in, the United States?
@Barry Goldwater You could certianly try these. Make sure to toggle the fly out to "shown" for input frequencies. You should start with a blank channel, input the receiving frequency, save, then input the transmitting frequency and its qualifiers like PL, then save again.
Transmitting power has no impact on your ability to receive... So the 5w and 8w both receive equally well.
Just take the antenna off to store you weather freq, etc.....

Just received my UV-9R handheld radio, just getting familiar with its functions, got it mainly for getting out in the kayak out in Lake St.CLAIR (nestled in between lake Huron and lake Erie) just off the Detroit river. I'm sure the more I use it, the more will enjoy it.

I think if you remove the antennae to program in the weather channel, it might fail to receive, won't see activity and will thus save the channel.
I find it interesting that a lot of hardcore American "patriots", nationalist militias and "prepper" types have come to embrace this particular brand which is based in communist China. I'd expect such people rather support companies like Bendix, Harris or Motorola which at least are based in US. Not criticizing anyone's freedom to spend his $ as he chooses. I find it interesting that the US supports communist China in any sort of way... If anything China should be embargoed.
Motorola is owned by Lenovo and so is also Chinese. Most American brands still do there manufacturing there. Not sure you can escape using Chinese goods. Maybe if you bought a Korean or Japanese radio, but many of those are made in China too.

I was able to program in the weather channel by first removing the antenna so that it could no longer pick up the broadcast. I then programmed it in, and then reconnected the antenna and was good to go.
Still watching 3 years later! So what I want to know is how do you listen to a channel that has more than 6 digits? For instance, local sheriff's dispatch is xxx-xxxxx and I can only type in xxx-xxx.
It will work perfectly to round it off, although this radio can accept a 0, 25, or 5 as the final digit for you depending on the step size you have entered if memory serves? If not set the step size teeny tiny and punch in something close and work your way to your desired frequency with the arrow keys, that should get you as close as possible

Well, yes, but you really should get one anyway, if for no other reason than to help learn how to use it. Sure, you could technically drive without a license in an emergency, but if you've never driven before, you're probably not making it very far.

Remember YOU MUST have a Ham Radio License to talk on these radios. Listening is fine.
If you are wanting to just listen get a Scanner to help prevent unintentional transmitting and the possibility of a nice BIG FINE.

The Watts of the set is only applicable to the transmission, and makes no difference to receiving range.
