- This tutorial will show you from beginning to finish on how to input your local repeaters into your ham radio. This tutorial is intended for the BaoFeng radio, but the idea is the same with any ham radio.
This specific tutorial can be used with the BF-UV5R, F8HP, etc.
You can buy this radio here on amazon for about $20:

I'm just getting into the ham radio world. I actually live extremely close to you so ill probably hear you at some point!
Excellent! Thank you very much for this video. I have made contact with my first repeater
OMG!!! I wish I'd seen this video two years ago. I got so fed up with my BF8H and all the other BS videos that I bought a Yeasu FT 60. Damn.
Nice I just got into this with a Bf-f8td and I like right out side of Jackson maybe one day when I get a better set up I’ll be able to hear you.
I just got the UV-5RM from Baofeng hope to find a repeater within my range so this can be of use to me, ty.
THANK you so much on making this video! It's extremely helpful!
Glad it helped you!
What is the difference between R-CTCS and T-CTCS? Receive and Transmit?, do they need to be set on both for both RX and TX frequencies?
"Menu item 95" confused the hell out of me, its 25
Again I'm going to echo what everyone else has said. Great tutorial and thank you for this video. The issue I was having was the mygmrs website wasn't saying there was an offset/shift. Thank you 😊
I followed everything but I am not getting the repeater tone? Curious why
Total newbie here when I program my transmission frequency 448.975 when I transmit it defaults to 453.975? What’s going on? Using Baofeng BF-F8HP
This was the best tutorial I've watched for this purpose. Do you need to do anything different if you wanted to use it as a scanner for local PD? Or how would that work? Thanks for the video, big help. Keep em coming my friend.
In most cases , local pd have switched to encrypted communication, so the baofeng wouldn't work for that purpose.
Baofengs work unless u live in a big state and a bigger city
what do you do if the repeater I chose doesn't have a tone number? thank you! it only has DWNLINK, UPLINK, OFFSET .
It probably doesn't need one then
@@ModernHam So if you don't have a CTCS Tone listed for the repeater then it is considered an open channel which does not require a CTCS Tone to communicate with it. If this is the case, then you only have to enter the downlink frequency (say 146.000MHz), offset direction (say -) and the offset amount (say 0.600MHz). Then you save this as your receiving memory into a channel (say 81). Then when you go into MR (channel) mode and select channel 81, if you press the PTT button, it will automatically change from the downlink frequency of 146.000MHz to the uplink frequency of 145.400MHz which is just the 146.000 subtract the 0.600 offset amount. Therefore, there is no need to go back and enter the uplink frequency and save it separately as transmit frequency. You only need to enter the uplink frequency and CTCS Tone separately if your transmit frequency needs to include the CTCS Tone...is this correct?
I am still having issues getting mine setup
I went to several repeaters near me, just got a baofeng, I get the beep some towers also send the call sign but I never hear anyone on any of them. Is it just no one ever uses these very often?
Hi there I'm using a uv9r plus when I hit a repeater the radio freezes up ptt seems to stay on after releasing any ideas why
Stuck on step one. I cannot enter freq below 150.000 on my Uv5r, any advice?
What freq are you trying to use?
What antenna setup did you have in this video?
That antenna looks like it hooked up to a mobile antenna outside the house, they have small cables that will allow you to connect to the handheld to a coax cable
Ok how would I do it if I have 2 tones?
I live in Richmond too, great video
Cincinnati Ohio here. How do you know your connected to a repeater after you've done all the steps? And what are those series of tones that you said to ignore at the beginning ofthis video?
Those tones were morse code of the repeater’s call sign
BaoFeng BF-F8 HP somehow I flipped my 450.00 from bottom line to top line and would like to put it back on the bottom line. Can you help?
Great video. Very Helpfull.
Quick question: I have two (2) Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have them set and programed identically the same in the menu. I also have them on the same frequency. When I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 it works fine however when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1, the Baofeng radio # 1 will not pick up the transmission from the other Baofeng radio #2. SO I cannot hear any signal/transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. Do you think there is something wrong with Baofeng radio # 1?
I have 2 radios and I want the must miles I m home and my mom is in a car how do I get lots of miles with a 5w radio
I have a question. I’m new to Ham. If you input an offset value and direction for instance ~0.6MHz why would it be necessary to input a transmit frequency?
That’s a great question..
Hope someone can answer that…
If you put in the offset and the direction (+ or minus) you do not have to put in the Transmit frequency, but you have to go to the memory option and select the channel you want then press the menu button once and radio will store and say and store it Receive Channel, then press menu button again and radio will say transmit channel and restore it.
The other option is to not set the offset or offset direction, but rather enter a recieve channel and then a different transmitt channel into the channel memory. You need to always enter the receive channel first.
Ok, so dumb question...can anyone tell me any real world experience about the range of the UV5R?!
Is there a way to set up said UV5R to get through a repeater network so that I could reach across the country?
Please and thank you for the guidence and sorry if this is a noob question
AWESOME VIDEO!!! Thank You
followed the steps (awesome btw) but my transmit frequency is not what I entered and saved.
Same
Can you listen to repeaters without having a license as long as you don't transmit and if so how do you set one up? I'm from Laurel County
Yes you can. Just use repeater book and find receive vfo
Great video great information apparently we are neighbors how hard is it to get ham license
That depends on how hard you study.
Thank you for MY friend , I saw many videos how to understand the method and more stuff , you are the only channel explained very well , How i can hear someone talk , If i press PTT will they able to listen my voice ? May i check with you who is the person talking ? are they normal person or authority person ?
Guys/ModernHam: Help requested. Using Baofeng BF-F8HP. I've followed your steps but believe something's wrong. I'm adding repeater w/downlink 441.350, Tx/uplink 446.350, offset +5.000. After adding tone and all other info (ex. ch21) I can Rx on 441.**, but when I Tx, the Tx frequency jumps to 451.350, instead of 446.350. The only way I can get it to Tx on 446.350 is to change SFT-D setting to 'Off'. Clearly the offset isn't working as entered. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Wow, excellent! I'm a newbie...taking my test on Monday. I have the same radio. What is your antenna like?
Your offset was -0.6MHz and you entered 000.600, one I found was -5.0MHz, but when I entered 005.000 it didn't change to the right frequency. What am I doing wrong?
I have the same problem. It's doubling the frequency, e.g. I set it up for 444.925 RX, +5.000 offset, and when I transmit it's transmitting on 454.925... Looks like Scott Leaver below has the same issue. Apparently SFT-D should be OFF. The manual states 'SFT-D is not required when storing repeater frequencies into channels'. But I have no idea why it was doubling the TX frequency.
quick question if I program the repeater or simplex I'm pick up long range wright?
Repeater range. Wide be more effective if one is within range...
Awesome easy perzy done tutorial !🎯👍👊😇THANK YOU: YOU CLARIFIED PUTTING 2freq on one ch !!!!! i WAS PULLING MY HAIR OUT ; COULD NOT UNFERSTAND HOW THAT WOULDD WORK !!! = YOU CLARIFIED THAT BRILLIANTLY EASILY !🎯👍👊😎😇😇😇😇
Thank you! Very helpful!!

CONFUSING AND FRUSTRATING _ WHERE TO ADD DOWNLINK ?
oFFSET IS OK - UNDERSTOOD
wHAERE IS DOWNLINK ?
Dude! You have said you are programming TRANSMIT in both entries. Check your video
Yeah, I guess the other 99% of people could figure out what I meant to say.
The other one was meant to be "Receive"
@@ModernHam Well, why don't you correct it instead of making a snide comment? Don't you edit your own posts?
@@ModernHam calm down Dr. Radio...
Thanks, but not really that helpful, still is not getting to repeater....
