A progressive rock fan would speak of "concept album". Very interesting theme with some hilarious and some dramatic moments. You can literally see this world of insects as described in the titles of Aho's work. Super inventiveness. And my compliments to the highly technically qualified orchestra too.
Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past
What an inventive work this is, and what superb orchestral effects! Aho is an example of a composer who uses a style or idiom in the service of the particular music he is writing, and not using it for its' own sake to prove its' worth. In so doing, he is proving his worth as one of the world's great contemporary composers.
Wonderful ! Some of this music is positively hilarious. Aho must have a great sense of humour. Many thanks for posting this with the links to the individual sections.
Wonderful! Kalevi Aho writes in a truly interesting style. He mixes older musical styles with pre WWII-style modernism. Sadly many known composers after WWII went or are going too far with their music. I understand that composers like John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen felt the need to go to the extremes but eventhough I listen to their music sometimes I don't find it so interesting except the fact that it's different. Aho's music on the other hand contains many great qualities.

Aho's symphonies are very interesting and can really encourage other composers to try to compose at least one symphony.
This title--all by itself--is genius!
