Grubinger's skill as a percussionist is only the second thing that I most love about him. First and foremost, I love the fact that he looks like a complete psychotic.
What an amazing piece. Apart from the fantastic soloist, the ending section is also amazing for its rich orchestral writing, from solo trombone to tuba to woodwinds...something for every player. What imagination from Aho!
Wow, what a work! What a performance! The only percussion concerto I knew was Schwantners (which I love) but this blows that out of the water. Grubinger brings an incredible, physical intensity to the work. His technique is phenomenal.
Aho is a remarkable composer. Please do yourself a favour and listen to his horn concerto and theremin (!) concerto. Absolutely riveting, magnificent stuff.
Why hasn’t this been transcribed for wind ensemble? It’s already nearly a wind ensemble piece. And it would get dozens more performances by great ensembles and soloists.
Listening/watching this again for about the 20th time. No words can describe how extraordinary Grubinger's technique/musicianship is. I'm also struck by the white floor stage surrounded by the audience in black - very dramatic. Also the truly excellent camera work (which seems quite rare these days). The work is as amazing as ever.
Kalevi, Kalevi, Kelevi!!! Simplesmente fenomenal, a grande Música do genial Kalevi Aho é arrebatadora.
Amazing music Aho . There is always a forward pulse but where isd the downbeat3/4 ,4/4 5/4.7/4,4/8 . Good idea .Common now but i need to use it in me own music !
Kaveli Aho reinvented the large orchestral music for the 21st century.
Love this composer.
Greetings from California

I have never seen a more virtuosic passage written for temple blocks.
Astounding music, full of energy, anger and anguish, with moments of lamentation, reflection and tenderness. Music of our times. Love it
Astonishing. Overwhelming. Sublime
Beautifully shot, beautifully played, beautifully cool
Contemporary classical rocks 🤘

12:28 The timpani player thinks fast by grabbing a new stick after dropping one. Those are some good reflexes.

Wonderful compozition! Very professionally!!! Thank you for all perfomers!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Where is the infinite like button? This must be the greatest percussion concerto ever written. Chen Yi's comes close, though.
What a stunning piece! And amazing performance too... 👍😀
Great piece, great performer!!!
Awesome performance of a great Orchestra. WISH WE HAD THIS GROUP AT 7 PM every night
Burtons grip on the vibraphone and Stevens on the Marimba. Rare to see someone who doesn't stick to one grip!
So tired of modern works that just kind of fade away like this one did. The first 25 minutes or so were very exciting. I miss big, triumphant endings.
Go Aho go!
At the end of this year 2018 I began that I call "kalevis Tour". Another piece of Master work !
Danke !
Brilliant performance; amazing composition. I would love to see this in person! Thanks for posting.
Kalevi Aho, certainly one of the great composers of the present day.
around 6:30 this takes me directly to another world!
Stunning piece and performance.
Absolute banger (literally)
Wonderful play, amazing solo!!!!
Hope the Swedish record label BIS record the piece soon.
There is, with Colin Currie of whom it was commissioned before.
Enjoyed this entirely.
Bravissimo!!!

Martin Grubinger is a cool and dynamic performer like Steve McQueen on the screen.

Omg so interesting! Sounds like britten, hindmith, and rautavarra.
2Keyblades. A portion of the beginning of this concerto reminds me of the 2nd movement of Britten's "Sinfonia da Requiem."
Fantástico!
That shit is lit af
I need more
