This music unfolds like a picture book full of stars, where birds come chirping, spinning farandoles, cracking rattles and dancing wizards. From rounds to nursery rhymes, the arrangements display their mystery and the instruments have the roundness and brilliance of chimes 😝

Closer to the objective violence of Simpson than the tragic grieving sound of Shostakovich or Schnittke, or the suffering and pain of Petterson. Not harsh and pitiless like Norgard. Quite a lot of wonderful music both in the organ and orchestral writing and some unique sonorities that I truly envy....The mysterious ending is distinctive and wonderful (what is that unearthly keening instrument?)...The difficulty is in seeing or finding an organizing force at work in the way this music is structured and develops...the three large scherzo movements that serve as the backbone of the work are all different in theme and character, and move in and out of scherzo like character quite variously. Scherzo one abandons the scherzo theme for about 8 minutes before returning to it. So not sure how useful the structural divisions of the work are.

Thank you Kate. I've always admired this painting but never took the time to learn anything about it.

The quality of his is output is spotty, but, then again, so was that of Shostakovich who was the best of the 20th century (I believe)

what instrument plays at the very end? Trombe?

I think it is a multiphonic sound of clarinet or bas clarinet

And the very low could be a mixture of counterbasson and bass trombon…

@@cyklistenerve4819 I checked the score, and the low wind instrument at the end of the piece is just the contrabassoon, without doubling with any other instrument.
