Question: How come folks like Angie Stone, India Irie, Floetry, Laurnea, Jill Scott, D’Angelo, etc. never reach the success of other mainstream artists? Even as a kid I noticed BET, MTV and VH1 didn’t play them in heavy rotation like they did other artists.
I hate to say this....particularly with VH1 and MTV....lot to do with maybe the color of their skin...and/or maybe their record company not heavily promoting them🤔🤔😲😲

Well D’Angelo stopped making music on his own after the success of Voodoo. I remember him being extremely popular after making How Does it Feel but he couldn’t take being over sexualized and just dipped. He wanted people to focus on his music not his body. His story is kinda sad. 😢 I feel like if he had stayed consistent he’d be as big as Usher is now. Even after taking long breaks between albums he made a come back and won Grammy’s but he doesn’t like being famous. I also heard he lacks confidence in himself but I wish he could see what everyone else sees in him he’s very handsome, a great musician, and great performer.
It may be due to the fact that they weren’t heavily sexualized. They made better music than some of the artists who were being promoted.
