    FYI, people, that chainsaw chain sharpener was not designed for common chainsaw chains as you see in this video. You have to upgrade your chainsaw bar and chain in order for it to work, the new design chainsaw chain looks like a bunch of small wood chisels.

      I agree there's no way a concave whetstone can sharpen any normal chain on a chainsaw, its physically impossible. There's absolutely no way a concave whetstone can get into the blades of a normal chain. This was the reason I wanted to see it in operation and from the outcome I have not had my belief changed. But I am glad you agree, and told me of this new chain that it can sharpen. So you have saved me the cost of buying this on ebay and unfortunately I will have to continue with the round file. Thank you for clearing this up for me it's much appreciated.

      This also looks like the knockoff. There's a Chinese company that pops up occasionally it's been going on for years now. Technically the first one that came out with this was organ and they have a patent and they have a special bar and chain as you said. It's the locking mechanism here that gives it away as one of the knock-offs and it will ruin a normal chain

    I saw this gimmick on some commercial. The problem with this idea is that when you sharpen a chainsaw chain you file the under side of the tooth not the top of the tooth. I am surprised that it even worked at all. Even to use it in a pinch, you will spend more time fixing your chain when you go to properly sharpen it later. :)

    I bought a craftsman chainsaw years ago that came with the original design. It had a special chain. What you have is probably a Chinese knockoff. It does not work without the proper chain. It probably just knocked off the burrs your chain had... no way was it sharper. The original design did work for a quick sharpening ... great for someone who is just doing minor yard work... but the blade never really stayed sharp for very long.. if this design worked well... the pro's would be using it today. It was just an over priced gimmick to make people think you could sharpen a chain .. in a few seconds. But it's sales and returns put a quick end to it

      This seems to be a scam in a sense, definitely some degree of dishonesty. And most of the reviews are likely paid or fake.
      There is an official Oregon product - powersharp, look it up. It requires a special chain that gets sharpened from the outside, I havent used one before but have seen the chain, they're definitely a special weird looking chain.
      The Chinese sharpener resembles the Oregon shaperner almost exactly, but they apparently are unable to make or would get in trouble for some patents or trade mark by selling the knockoff special chain or making it clear that only Oregon powersharp chains work with this. I haven't used it, but pretty sure it will work fine with the powersharp chains.
      I've been curious about using the real product, probably not for serious work, but doing some light clearing or cutting some saplings all the way at the ground for a new path, would be kind of handy. But the china (or Oregon) sharpener will not work with standard chains)
      The Oregon comes as a kit, and apparently the sharpener wears out first, creating some demand for a cheap china stone, they just dont point that out for one or many reasons

      @kenrolltideAlabama 4 года назад

      The bigger the chips are the faster it is cutting the wood as long as it has been sharpened evenly on both sides to keep the chain running straight. That applies to all chins and saw blades no matter what you sharpen it with. I did watch a video from the maker of the product saying it was designed to work with a special chain made with double drags to help make it run even on the sharping rock to keep the cutting angels the same. But him saying the wood chips being bigger shows it being sharper is correct as long as you don't get your cutting angels different from side to side and tooth to tooth.

      DON'T DO THIS AGAIN. Please! The Chain you sharpened was meant to be sharpened in the gullet. This device is made to sharpen a special Oregon chain with a different cutter on top. This wrecked the chain even more than hitting dirt and rocks. I'm not fussing at you; but don't do this! If you want to use this sharpener, buy the Oregon chain it was made for; but looking at the stone in the sharpener you used tells me it is ruined. There are lots of ways and devices to sharpen the good chain you had on this saw easily. Just look them up here on RUclips. Using a round file even without a guide is better than this thing. If you add a cheap stump vice, it's even better. You can use a Dremel tool with a guide and a rotary stone. That's what I do in the field sometimes. You can buy a cheap sharpening machine. Anything, just not this.

    • @dukeflem
      @dukeflem 4 года назад

      PLEASE DON"T USE THIS ON THIS TYPE CHAIN. This sharpener is for the Oregon Chain it was designed for which is completely different. I will give some advice here: Look on RUclips for videos on sharpening your chain. There are many ways and most are very easy and cheap. A file and a stump vise is probably the easiest. You may not do it perfectly at first but it will be way better than this thing. Next is even more important. If you hit rocks or a nail, stop immediately and put on your back up chain. If you continue to use it, it will radically shorten the life of the chain (costs abt $25). I'm not saying this just to be mean. I want your experiences with a saw to be better and safer.

    I have two concerns. Firstly, it works by grinding off the top flat part of the tooth, which is quite thin. Once that is ground to the point that it has completely gone or is too weak, the chain becomes throwaway. That's despite the vertical part of the tooth still having plenty of longitudinal meat to file, actually its original amount. Secondly, the teeth are supposed to be slightly raked, with the top surface of the tooth not parallel to the bar. I suspect that that's so the cutting edge can dig in. I believe this device would eventually grind the tops of the teeth parallel to the bar, possibly allowing the them to skate somewhat.

    Those sharpen the chain, but at a fairly steep cost in money and time. First, you have to use a special chain that you won't find at the local hardware store or Home Depot...they must be ordered, along with a new grinding stone with EVERY chain replacement. You better have several on hand because if you don't and screw up a chain on rock or metal in the wood you are cutting you are out of the wood cutting activity until you order one and wait for it.
    Second, grinding the chain with the Ever Sharp instead of learning how to file a chain and using a file when the chain dulls cuts your chain life by AT LEAST 50%, probably more like 70%. You will use 2-4 Power Sharp chains for the same qork that a single regular chain would do.
    Its a gimmick designed to make you spend a lot more money on chains and to have to spend it on Power Sharp chains.

    As far as using it on traditional type chains, the one area I can see this being useful, even if it wasn't the intended purpose of the manufacturer.... is if you've spent some serious time on a chainsaw and sharpening them yourself....... you've had times where you hit something and the top of the teeth would get rounded. When that happens no amount of tooth sharpening will help. The chain is almost useless. I could see where this would help the tooth rounding by flattening out the top.

      You are very correct. There is a bar, chain and this sharpener in a three-part system from Oregon. This is a complete counterfeit from a scam company out of China. It's been going on for years. I'm doing the research and there's all sorts of information online now from the last couple years. Oregon put out a special chain that is meant to be sharpened this way that fits on a bar that perfectly fits up against that concave sharpening stone. There are some decent videos that show it works pretty well.
      I personally am a whole note that only sharpens a chain every couple years and I do a very bad job freehand so I'm looking at everything from simple old school metal plates that attach to the file and those clunky sliding hinging apparatus that clamp to the bar and even glanced at the grinder units but my dad used chainsaws growing up as he Heats with wood and I used to go out and help him get wood and when he took his chains into the shop after getting into a fence line and then hurting his hand at work before he got to sharpening them, we got them back in those grinding wheels destroy the temper of the steel. The teeth turned blue and red and yellow from the Heat and they wouldn't hold a good Edge after that and my dad is actually pretty good at hand filing because he grew up doing it and if the only way he's ever sharpened. He's actually so good at it that he has multiple sizes of files and would continue filing his chains until they were basically unusable.

    I guess if you’re going for nice shavings it works great!! I woulda preferred the cuts to be half the time as the dull chain, not just 1.003 seconds faster!!

    That only grinds the outside rather than sharpens the inside. Might be sharper but changes the effective cutting angle of a normal chain. Bit like sharpening both sides of a chisel.

    These sharpeners grind the wrong side of the teeth. They take the top edge off instead of the bottom of the teeth. This sharpener will make the tooth thickness thinner and thinner grinding the top of the tooth off until the chain is destroyed. The correct way to sharpen is with a round file pushing back and up from the underside of the tooth or a grinder designed for sharpening chain saw chains.

    • @DocScience2

      I can see that this destroys the chain much faster then any other sharpener. . It should be obvious. I think he should have said to trash it.

    Aside from never working, it also breaks the chain. Any tree cutter would turn in their graves when they saw crap like this. The teeth are usually sharpened from the inside. That thing doesn't make any sense at all.

    Wrong sharpener for your chain, it only is meant to sharpen the specific chain it was designed for. It will not sharpen a standard chainsaw chain!
    Try a 2 in 1 chainsaw sharpener for standard style chains, sharpens and files depth guides down at the same time.

    Appears you will be needing to buy a lot of sharpening stones. Maybe, as others in comments suggested, a chain designed to be sharpened in the manner this gadget sharpens won't eat up the stone so quickly.

    • @kenrolltideAlabama

      you are correct, some people are even able to sharpen each tooth on a saw but end up getting the sharpening angels off from side to side making the chain run to one side and makes the saw cut crooked and jam or wedge the bar into the log during the cut. When I was a young teen trying to make extra money cutting firewood I would run into this until I had an old Pulpwooder show me how to sharpen a saw and about the angels, depths, and how very important it was to keep it all even.

    You will go through chains more than ever by this improper sharpening method. And yes... the depth gauge is a very important part of the chain.
    Why would you want to sharpen the top of the blade until it is ground down to equal the depth gauge?
    Oh... now all you have to do is sit down and file the depth gauge down.
    WHAT !!!
