You have to love when a kick-ass rock band says "we need a number to get the ladies up and boppin"' They know how to play to a whole crowd, not just the guitar nerds. That's why they were such a great party band.
This song is the essence of summer - chokes me up when I hear it, because it takes you right back to your youth. I'm originally from Ohio, and in 1981/82 when I was in jr high all my girlfriends listened to these bands (Van Halen, Journey, REO Speedwagon, AC/DC) . They knew every band member by name and which ones they wanted to marry. I liked the music but was always seeking out other pop music from Europe.etc. If you grew up in the midwest in the 70s and 80s these bands were everywhere - like oxygen. Maybe in that moment I didn't appreciate them enough because I wanted to hear things you couldn't hear where I lived. Doesn't mean they aren't a truly great band. We were so lucky that this music was the soundtrack of our childhoods. I really love this song - sounds corny but it's magical. If I had a time machine - what I wouldn't give to visit those times again - even for a few hours.
Fantastic. My favorite VH song -- just such a vibe! The harmonies, Dave going off, Eddie's unmistakeable sound, great drumming as always -- party music for sure, you nailed it!
In the beginning, Eddie had the drum kit and Alex had the guitar, and one day, they switched instruments! EVH has always had a syncopation in his rythym and lead playing. Born rock stars...EVH also was a winner several times in the city wide (LA) piano playing competion as a kid. His Dad was a working musician, and their Indonesion mom sent them to piano lessons!
This is probably their most mainstream release during the DLR era…after Jump (but 5 years before Jump)….a good, fun song that most people enjoy. I like the subtle difference that Alex makes during the musical bridge/breakdown as he hits that tuned set of cowbells….it’s a really nice touch.
Eddie is an under rated rhythm guitarist, because the solos get so much attention. But most bands trying to copy these guys, had two guitarists, not just one.
Thank you fellers. Van Halen was my first ever concert by choice. Dance The Night Away was the very first song I ever heard by them and I was and am still hooked.
Too bad he never created anything but pop rock and sappy ballads with Hagar. He never wrote an epic song like Kashmir or The Rain Song. He never reached his potential because his band mates were mediocre.
EDDIE HAD NAMED HIS GUITAR SOUND, HE CALLS IT THE [BROWN SOUND] BY TAKING A CHAIN SAW AND CUTTINNG DEEP GROVES ON THE BACK OF HIS GUITAR IT GIVES HIM A UNIQUE SOUND CALLED THE BROWN SOUND.😊😊
van halen , a truly talented band, a great guitarist really is a true product of what they learned and gained from the greats of the late 60s and 70s...a good thing , learn and improvise..eddie took alot from alvin lee, then incorporated showmanship in the height of the mtv era.......very smart!!
Unfortunately one of the few songs from Van Halen that I like. Do not know why I don't like them except David Lee Roth. Thanks fellas for a great reaction. Keep doing what are doing. Appreciate you 🙏
I've heard an isolated track of just the guitar and drums - the two of them are crazy locked in through the verse and then hit thier fills in the bridge in perfect sync.
I heard that this song is about a woman in a club that they were playing had been out in the parking lot wasted having a romantic encounter. When she came back in her pants were on backwards and she danced the rest of the night dressed like that.
what a lot of people don't understand its rhythm play that separates guitarists Guys like Eddie, Page, and Hendrix were great rhythm players in addition to being able to do cool solo stuff.... and they were great songwriters and producers. The guys who can wank off fast on the fretboard aren't artists compared to these guyss
Although not purposely, according to King Edward, this tune was VH's foray into a more pop style composition. I'm pretty sure that "Go Your Own Way" from Fleetwood Mac was the musical inspiration for this tune (the idea for the song was an X-rated event!). Eddie had a fantastic ear for catchy melodies and another hit, Hall and Oates' "Kiss On My List," (one of my guilty pleasures), was the musical inspiration for "Jump," Van Halen's biggest hit. As a rocker/guitarist, I prefer songs like "Beautiful Girls," "Bottoms Up," and "Light up the Sky" on VH II. More Van Halen, fellas! 🔥🔥
If there is one thing that Van Halen knew how to do, it was engage an audience... This is one of the songs that the girls loved to get up and dance to! The "chimey" bits you hear is Eddie tapping harmonics on fretted notes... Great stuff.
You guys have gone deep on rock tracks. How about trying some other compelling music of the time. Trust me, I want it to make sense to what you've done so far. But, some newer vision could come from Laurie Anderso n "oh superman" or kate bush "cloudbusting"! Have fun, you will not be disappointed with either...
Michael Anthony, the bass player, is hitting those high, harmonizing notes. He gave VH that vocal fullness.
I always think that this song would have been a hit in almost any decade. It's just a classic, well-written pop song.
You have to love when a kick-ass rock band says "we need a number to get the ladies up and boppin"' They know how to play to a whole crowd, not just the guitar nerds. That's why they were such a great party band.
I love Dave's singing. His little screams and all. He doesn't get enough love.
I always loved the tropical feel to Eddie's harmonic melody in the bridge here....with this song on the radio it was summer time all year long.
This was the album/song that grabbed me as a kid in the late 70s and made me get into Van Halen.
This album was one of those in the late '70's that changed everything. Other guitarist had to step up their game...again!

No matter where the party was you were always sure have Halen playing at some point in the night.
Their dad played the clarinet on Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) off the Diver Down album.
That’s the sound of summertime.
Bless 'em, they made the '80's SO much fun! Thanks for your reaction.
The drummer and the bass player killin it too
“The Full Bug” off Diver Down. Anything that doesn’t have Sammy Hagar in it, is great.
100% Like Joe Dirt said, "Van Halen... NOT Van Hagar"!
😂🤣😂
Please, please...continue on this masterpiece. Light up the Sky, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Bottoms Up and Outta Love are friggin awesome
FACT
Michael Anthony - bass and harmonies carry this classic!! Great album!

This is the song that hooked me on VH back in the day. It was a brand new thing
Somebody Get Me a Doctor next please! On this same album
Memories from LA back in the late 70’s. They owned the airwaves from KMET to KLOS.
Eddie is an under rated rhythm guitarist, because the solos get so much attention. But most bands trying to copy these guys, had two guitarists, not just one.
Eddie was flat out the greatest rhythm guitar player who ever lived and it's not even close.
Thanks!
Thank you fellers. Van Halen was my first ever concert by choice. Dance The Night Away was the very first song I ever heard by them and I was and am still hooked.
Great Reactions! I think you guys would enjoy "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. Fun song!
FYI this song was in the last green hornet movie in the car ride!!! my Fav VH song
Good Morning Gents 😊. Love me some Van Halen. Eddie never disappoints ❤
They have a live version of the song to concert they were playing looks like somebody's backyard right before the start of the 79 tour
More greatness from VH
Great song
Great pop rock tune
Terrific harmonies.
Saw them in Kalamazoo, MI back in ‘79. Only two albums out. The boys jammed hard.
those were the days weren't they!! I miss 'em at times...
Eddie's tone was timeless.
Eddie was one of the best rhythm players...
Yes!
And Eddie's favorite rhythm guitarist was Malcolm Young from AC/DC. He often said as much.
Too bad he never mastered the lead guitar part. 😢
Too bad he never created anything but pop rock and sappy ballads with Hagar. He never wrote an epic song like Kashmir or The Rain Song. He never reached his potential because his band mates were mediocre.
@@dickcnormis1444It must really suck being you !
Party music at its finest indeed
This albums my fav!, Women in love is another masterpiece from this #2 album
Love that 2nd album.
Great commentary; great song.
1st Van Halen album changed rock IMO it was so good
Another one of my all time favorite songs. All playlists and never get tired of listening to it. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for doing more Van Halen!! Drop Dead Legs from their big 1984 album has a really funky, dirty, awesome sound, you'd love it.
EVH , The greatest guitar player of all time . RIP🤘🎸
EDDIE HAD NAMED HIS GUITAR SOUND, HE CALLS IT THE [BROWN SOUND] BY TAKING A CHAIN SAW AND CUTTINNG DEEP GROVES ON THE BACK OF HIS GUITAR IT GIVES HIM A UNIQUE SOUND CALLED THE BROWN SOUND.😊😊
Another killer intro from Alex and Eddie

You two are the best on RUclips 👍
Classic VH !!!!!
So rad that you guys are reviewing this. Old 70's VH was special.
You could do every song on this album. You want a “dirty” sound? “DOA” “Somebody Get Me a Doctor” “Light Up The Sky”. Those are fire!
Roth said many times Michael Anthony made him sound good.
Eddie was an excellent rhythm guitarist🎸🎶
My very favorite rhythm guitar player. Obviously he's known for his soloing, but to me his rhythm is even more impressive.
Most insurance companies have earthquake coverage but exclude any claims from cities with Van Halen concerts.
Unfortunately one of the few songs from Van Halen that I like. Do not know why I don't like them except David Lee Roth. Thanks fellas for a great reaction. Keep doing what are doing. Appreciate you 🙏
Damn, I'm back in high school again.
Eddie is a great rhythm player! Doesn’t hurt that he grew up having his brother drum with him 😊
I've heard an isolated track of just the guitar and drums - the two of them are crazy locked in through the verse and then hit thier fills in the bridge in perfect sync.
I heard that this song is about a woman in a club that they were playing had been out in the parking lot wasted having a romantic encounter. When she came back in her pants were on backwards and she danced the rest of the night dressed like that.
More horizontal mambo music, fellas? You guys rock!
So many Van Halen songs (with David Lee Roth) stand the test of time.
He’s tapping harmonic chords. Also, iris down your camera. It’s slightly overexposed. Love your reactions.
I’m playing catch up guys. But this just started and I think you’ll really like it. Let see!
The endless summer of 1980...
VH started out as a cover band. And for Eddie to not solo but have the guitar playing be top tier tells you how good he was.
Okay, now it's time for Atomic Punk... Super hard early VH at their best.
Somehow, this just sounds like summer.
Go Laa. Go Chee!
Great tune. Mean streets is there best song
PURE MUSIC ALL KILLER. NO FILLER
what a lot of people don't understand its rhythm play that separates guitarists

Astros - 2017 WS Champs!

Cowbell!
👍
Have you listened to Led Zeppelin. Whole lotta love
The official guitar term for that technique is the chicka-chicka
"Everybody Wants Some", is their best track. This one seems so mild in comparison. Still great, tho.
Loved VH as a Young kid my first real Rock Band... the beat, sound and energy would pump you up
💎Dave's "C'mon" has always been enough to get me to dance‼
Eddie Van Halen was the “Ultimate Guitar Hero” ! He inspired so many guitarists and even more air guitarists like me …RIP EVH…
Originally Dance Lolita Dance
How many second albums are this good? Not many.
VH2 doesn't get enough attention. 2 of my favs are "light up the sky" and "outta love again"
😛👍
ACDC HAVE A DRINK ON ME.
Achillies last stand LIVE
Give a listen to D O A please .
The unmistakable sound of VH. Firing on all cylinders. ✌️
Dave v Sammy. The other 3 remain the same but is the sound the same? That's the question
If there is one thing that Van Halen knew how to do, it was engage an audience... This is one of the songs that the girls loved to get up and dance to! The "chimey" bits you hear is Eddie tapping harmonics on fretted notes... Great stuff.
The best VH track!
This is a cover by the way... Early in their career they did a few covers
I miss when rock had a certain confidence and swagger. VH forever.
More cowbell please...
You guys need some BAD COMPANY in your ears.
Running with the Devil and Jamie‘s crying by Van Halen if you haven’t already🥁🎸🔥
king Edward

Great song but my least favorite off that album from my top 3 favorite bands
Eeeeeew bayba bayba! The musicianship is great, but this song is so corny. I said it then when I was a kid, and I say it now all these years later.
Miss you Eddie. There never will be another. Van Halen will never die.
Pop, Top 40 gay rock....No thanks.
