Eddie gets all the talk but Alex's drums on this album are perfection! Not to mention Michael Anthony's voice complimenting Dave. It's such a signature sound.
He was using Simmons drums for the first time on this album. They were alot harder and Ed said actually made Alex's hands hurt. Alex shined on VH2 and this album especially.
Criminally underrated song. This is my favourite song of the entire span of what I call the classic Van Halen era; from Van Halen I to 1984. I never get tired of listening to it.
DROP DEAD LEGS , from this album, a deep track, captures all that was great about Van Halen as a foursome. Plus the solo comes at the end of song, rare. Hope you gentlemen can find time to Rock it.
Another banger off of this album is “Drop Dead Legs” which has an awesome outro !! AirPlay Beats knows great music and I love watching you 2 react to my favorite band …Keep those Van Halen reactions coming !
Such a cool song...And a curve pitch for Van Halen. Also the fact that "I'll Wait" featured writing contributions from Michael McDonald gives the song a different kind of feel. Eddie and the crew were def. swinging for something out of the norm for them.
I remember it like it's yesterday. The year is 1984, I'm sitting in the dark with nothing but the glow from my Sony stereo system, listening to this album (vinyl that is) with headphones. I swear I can still smell the stereo system when I hear these songs. It was a great time to be alive.
Nothing like the smell of a heated stereo receiver. I can still recall walking into crazy Eddies or Newmark and Lewis to buy stereo equipment. The green glow of the lights and the smell of the components was heavenly

Thank you!
Think about this, we had these bands in the 80’s Van Halen, U2, Bon Jovi, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, John Cougar, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Duran Duran, Motley Crue, The Police, Boston, Whitesnake, The Cure, Violent Femmes, The Smiths, New Order, Guns n Roses, The Knack, Rush, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, etc. the 80’s were special
Not to mention Iron Maiden; Oingo Boingo; INXS; Judas Priest; Sade; Journey; Metallica; Depeche Mode; DEVO; Talking Heads and on and on. So many legendary bands!
What is extra special is that was "his" riff so he was the one pitching it to the rest of the skeptical band. He really wanted to expand and be known as a musician and not just a great guitar player.
Dave once said, "Everyone has a little Van Halen inside them." So yep, it's in your blood! LOL This is a great tune. Great songwriting and great creativity with the sound.
I grew up with this album and it was my introduction to the band before I delved into their catalog. I remember a lot of long time fans were freaked out about all the keyboards that had never been found on the previous albums, at least not to this extent, but I loved this album and it’s their last one with Roth before they made a major change with Hagar. A lot of fans weren’t happy with that either.
GREAT reaction guys!!! This song has ALWAYS been my fave off of 1984! Course I loved Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, House of Pain, etc...but there was something about the synth vibe & darkness of this song that just jived with me (and I was 5 when my sister got this cassette - and I played the hell out of it!! Bonus points for the cover - was always drawn to the cigarette smoking angel). The drum beat, and finally Diamond Dave's delivery was pure perfection!! This song came after Hot For Teacher on the album, so it was a one-two punch of awesomeness!! This reaction made my day! Thanks. Cheers!
I probably played this song more than any other on the album, just because you heard the others on the radio more. The drums carry this song. Alex wasn't messing around here, pretty simple but straight up and in your face. Love it!
This got a lot a spins on the jukebox at the local Putt-Putt arcade gameroom when I was a young adult and is my fave on the album. I just recently discovered it was Eddie on the synth and was his riff he came up with.
Miami Vice is such good memories for me! The music from it! From the theme song, to Phil Collins, Glen Frey, others I just can’t remember 😂 Those were the days!!
Written by Michael McDonald and Van Halen. Produced by Ted Templeman. 40 years 🎂 He (Templeman) called 📞 Michael McDonald to work on lyrics because David Lee Roth was stuck! 😖 The help led to a Billboard Top 40 hit! Michael Anthony played synth bass and backing synthesizers. Late Eddie van Halen played the Oberheim synth, other keyboards and guitars 🎸 including the solo. Same roles for studio 🎙 and tour. Ted Templeman produced The Doobie Brothers in addition to producing Van Halen. Thus, the easy call-up of Michael McDonald.
Another great video guys! This album was awesome. I got this for Christmas 1984. From that point fwd I have loved the lead guitars. Eddie was a special one with a guitar. A wizard 🧙♂️ if you will. RIP Eddie.
This was recorded in 1983 and there is RUclips video footage of Eddie playing live with Jan Hammer who wrote the Miami Vice theme, he jammed with Eddie while playing synth key tar

You're resident Van Haleniac here...."I'll Wait" is a departure for Van Halen, but what a groove. Drop Dead Legs, Good Girl Gone Bad, and House of Pain are my rock'n pics from "1984."
Check out Big Fat Money featuring Sammy Hagar on vocals. I saw them in concert in Feb of 1985 as part of this tour. The day before my 21st birthday i was treated to a raucous concert. David Lee Rorh stopped the concert to deal with a person making a scene, it was awesome.
The thing that is not well known is that Ted Templeman who also produced The Doobie Brothers brought in Michael McDonald to help David Lee Roth with the lyrics. I'm sure you remember him from Steely Dan's Peg. He did not get a writing credit for this song but I'm sure he got paid. Check it out.
Sorry I missed this reaction. Good find! If David Lee comes out to play with Van Halen, I'm going. This album was/is sooo good....I missed the tour in 84 cause I WAS AN IDIOT.
The brightness of the hi-hat and snare was a dead giveaway you were hearing a Van Halen track! I believe this track had all acoustic toms. Most electronic toms were on 5150.
This song was cowritten by Michael McDonald, from The Doobie Brothers, because the album didn’t have a slow song, and Dave was having a hard time coming up with lyrics.
Drop Dead Legs is an incredible track that didn't get any airplay. I saw them in Detroit 1984 cobo hall 3rd row from the stage. Awesome time for a 19 year old boy
I was 15, a huge VH fan and worshiper of Eddie in 84'. I saw them on tour and it was my 1st arena rock concert. Still got the t-shirt! I've been to many since and seen everyone from the Stones, Clapton SRV, B.B. King, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, etc., etc. But you never forget your first. 😉
It’s in my blood too .. 8th grade, neighbor kid took me for a ride in his Chevy Monza .. 80 mph, windows down and my introduction to Van Halen.. been hooked on their sound since then
This song sounded great in those big Ol Land Yacht of the 70’s and early 80’s with the big stereos! Gliding in one of those cars in the early evening of the summer of 84’ a with honey bunny or two, it was too sweet!
Check out Drop Dead Legs off this same album, 1984. It's so funky & nasty in a good way, lol. For I'll Wait, I've always loved it, it's such a different vibe but still their cool sound. It TOTALLY sounds like Miani Vice (just like The Who's Eminence Front) but I looked it up and it wasn't on.

It's like Alex had one breather track on side 2 of this album. Three tracks of pure pummeling, and one of simplistic beauty.
