Lalah Hathaway: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- July 25, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- Lalah Hathaway comes from royalty: Her late father Donny Hathaway's voice was crucial for my generation, setting the bar for inspired, old-school soul singing. But living in that kind of shadow can also be a burden, robbing the offspring of an identity apart from that of the famous parent.
The younger Hathaway's appearance behind the Tiny Desk pulls back the curtain a bit for a close-up encounter with her powerfully expressive voice. The lower registers always draw me in, and in "Change Ya Life," Hathaway's dusky contralto paints an exciting portrait of blissful cohabitation - but on her terms. "I'm going to teach you how to treat me like I deserve," she sings, adding, "I'll give you the world." She draws on a tradition of romance and sensuality in the best soul music, but with a feminist twist that eschews old-school, male-centric lyrics and attitudes.
Lyrics alone do not convey that kind of spirit. It's in Hathaway's delivery - self-assured yet vulnerable. "Boston," her ode to her second home (she's from Chicago), is a meditation on self-discovery and longing. The band - electric piano, bass, drums - perfectly straddles slow-jam R&B and a jazz-ballad sensibility.
So much of the most powerful music from the Civil Rights Era wasn't about literal accounting of injustices; many of those songs enshrouded morality plays in the guise of romantic longing. Hathaway introduces the set-closing title track of her new album Honestly as an explicit reflection "of my country at this time." If you heard it for the first time without the introduction, it comes across as a lover's lament. But Hathaway's soaring vocals infuse it with the passion of resistance to bring her set to a close on a hopeful, joyous note.

OMG shut up!!! lol swear fo God..
One of the most oddly-underrated neo-soul artists of the last 15 years. Even without the last name, she has some amazing cuts.
KMO 325 I'm trying to get people to stop using the term neo soul it's real rnb
Kat and Dre Images
Not wrong. Got baby don't cry on Vinyl from 90's W🙌W
KMO 325 actually more than 25 years of great music. Her first self titled album was released in 1990. I been rockin with her since day one. Another one people slept on is a cat named Rahsaan Patterson. Check him out if you haven’t already. His music is phenomenal but hard to find.
ARTICAL FOUNDATION
"THE DEFINITION OF NEO-SOUL / INDIE SOUL"
Neo-Soul / Indie Soul is a timeless musical genre that fuses real instrumental, Jazz, Contemporary R&B and 1970s-style Soul,Funk,Rock and Deep House Soul Music with some elements of Hip-Hop. As it's name (new soul) implies, Neo-Soul / Indie Soul music is essentially modern-day soul music, with contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. It differs from contemporary R&B in that it's organic and obviously more soulful, and it also tends to have deeper messages and meanings than R&B.
She not a Neo-Soul/Indie Soul Artist anymore. She going for that crappy Mainstream sound.😔
That pink lipstick is popping!!
mali carter I was looking at that too😂😂😂
@@L.Sabore Im guilty to lol
It may be her signature color. Her website is referred to as the Pink Room.

Lalah should've had an hour. What a beautiful voice, just like her Pops.
Her Dad the initmitable Donny Hathaway, yes thank God for passing that gift on to Lala
The most underrated artist since Phyllis Hyman. Her voice is a gift!

Her voice is like butter! Yas!!
Lalah's voice feel like thermal insulated, wool-blend earmuffs to my ears on a frigid winter's day.

It HURTS me so bad to see that this masterpiece has only 173k views.
What its wrong with people?
This woman is a beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She deserve the world.
I would die if tiny desk brings Jazmine Sullivan or Fantasia too.
They did have Jasmine Sullivan a while back. Not in the studio tho. And of course she killed it🔥
A pure beast!!!
agreed
Nice band. Nowadays, Being actually good isn't in anymore. Its nice to see a collaboration of talent folk. It's about "feeling" like your good and promo hacks🤮 in reference to the chart toppers of today
When you call her a "beast" that is extremely racist. Try harder please.
Those Hathaway genetics are undeniable. Her voice is as smooth as silk-beautiful and calming.
This is serious....
NPR killed it again
Soji Ogungbesan Yes They did, Now let's get Chloe and Halle on here and I'll be a happy man!
OMG! I'm just finding out that Laylah did this and I'm offended that I didn't know. Lol. Laylah is joy at its purest.
Lalah has the spirit of her father mr. Donny Hathaway deep down in her soul.. it's such a beautiful thing to behold and I'm glad a part of him is still on this earth..peace and blessings to everyone here...
Yes! He lives in her just like Michael lives in Janet!
@Groove Worshipper she's beyond an incredible talent but in my opinion I highly doubt the association to her father would get old to her especially since for some he is regarded as one of the greatest singers of all time.. it probably makes her feel good especially knowing what her father dealt with during his life.. that's just my opinion though!
Yeesss !!! I couldnt have said it better. From the moment I first heard Lalah, I could hear Donny in her voice. She is wonderful all by herself but he's still here because of her. Blessings.❤
Nerdbama Rich AMEN to that!!
I was all sold ever since I saw her with Snarky puppy doing the polyphonic thing with her voice... that was some crazy shit!!!!!
that was crazy. I'm still trying to understand how that works. While she made it look like its a normal thing and everyone can do it.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried a little watching that video!
I cried AND shivered...it rocked me to my spine...and I found that video when I was delving into Snarky Puppy...whodathunkit?
@Human220dex Thank you for that! That was just incredible! For people reading this and who are curious as well: ruclips.net/video/0SJIgTLe0hc/видео.html

Thank you God! This was the best notification I could’ve received today! NPR ❤️! Lalah is the GOAT!!!!
Patience Isavirtue canta muito né , que voz linda.
Yass the goat period 🤗🤗🤩
She is hands down one of the most iconic artists of our time. When she sings you can feel Donny but at the same time she us uniquely Lalah. She has incredible agility and can scat like no one else but she isn’t a show off. She uses her incredible voice as a fine tuned instrument. So many times she has blown me away by her mastery!
Saw her in Dallas last night. She was late, but she came out swinging. Her voice is rich and buttery. She was definitely worth wait. ♥
Omg she’s 50 where? I love her dad so . He’s shining. Through her. She’s my momma’s age literally . Momma Hathaway to me
Here Since the “Baby Don’t Cry” Days.
She’s BET❤️❤️❤️
and u know this man!!!!
jafanek exactly!!!! Love her
She sang that ?
Deanea Williams yes
When you squint your eyes because the placement of the chord against the melody at 1:00, then rewind it to hear it again, and you see that the keyboard player closed her eyes too! Feels like you added a day to your life!
The real question is, what happened at 1:19? Not that I care because it all sounds fabulous :)
I did the same damn thing! 🙌🏾
Reginald Jacobs RIGHT!
Yeeeeesssssss! Pure bliss and perfection.
What the hell is going on with this woman? She sings so fucking well. I tought it was nice edits on her tracks, but her technique is so fucking clean and beautiful. Like, she's literally melting me with her voice.
The greatest living voice at this point and time. #ChicagosFinest #SoulSanger
#Hathaway❤️❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely agree! Best voice of this generation.
She is so beautiful
Wow, the first song alone just had me in a zone..
She’s the first artist who’s voice seemed like it was much bigger than that room (my opinion). She’s an entirely different vibe. I’ll always be a true fan❤
I met Lalah when i was working for Choklate some years back. Lalah came to Chok's concert in Atlanta... there were ppl like Musiq, Algebra, Anthony David, etc supporting good music. Everyone was soooo nice. I've been a fan of hers since (cz I was sleep before). Beautiful voice beautiful person.
That brother playing the bass is certified!!
Wooow when I hear Lalah she reminds me of the fall season when the leaves are changing and a nice hot herbal tea to sip on while my mind and soul is serenade with her beautiful voice💕
Perfect description!
Fastest 11 mins of my life. The band behind Lalah couldn’t be any more tasteful. And that voice!! Outrageous.

Live in a Western country conquered by my ancestors and further developed by Europeans to provide you with technological advances that allows you to feel...grateful?
Philip Rey lmao really quick just to keep it on music, the bass guitar, piano, drums and Guitarro were invented by African Moors and made popular by African American musicians. Rap/R&B is the number one music genes... Look up real info not what they give you to make you feel better about being mediocre at best. Have a dope day. Salaam
I see you speaking that white man's language. Know your place, boy. Plvs Vltra.
