    When you caulked around the metal form, I figured it wouldn't show because you were going to set the sink into place. Also, if you take a random orbital sander (no paper attached) and run it around the outside of the form, should settle the concrete evenly on the melamine and give you a smoother surface. The ROS is essentially the small scale of your slab shaker.

    I've got concrete counters in my house using the same method. My brother's house also.
    Edit, I'm not done watching, but those are gonna be bowed like mad. You really need to make the bottom stiff (supported) and straight.
    After opening them up polish them up to about 1200 grit wet. Then wax with some beeswax or something. We've used turtle wax, too, but beeswax works good. Then you'll have to keep waxing occasionally.

    If you have to remake these or make more of these counter tops, then you should use a bladeless sawzall up against the form and vibrate the air bubbles out that way. This will ensure a good even vibration all around. Also you should have troweled the concrete as well, because even if that is the bottom it also needs to be smooth to place on the cabinet top.

    The vibrator is actually to get the mud to the outside walls to have a smoother finish, less work in the long run.

    Over with plastic to slow the cure so it won’t crack and over dry too fast. We did our kitchen counters and used a palm sander on the sides of the forms to get the bubbles out

    Matt I used to do commercial concrete before the Army long ago. Also that's called a vibrator. Also you'll likely get little air pockets but could probably fill them in after removing it all from the form.. remember even if it looks bad you can paint it.

    I spend every day at work building molds to make refractory blocks... come home and basically watch Matt and Mere trying their hardest to do my job, it's equally funny and frustrating at the same time. I'll admit, pretty decent for first timers though and for not having the right tools for the job haha.

    Whatever you do, do not allow them to flex at all. My cousin made a concrete shelf for his wife's office and it flexed just a little when he put it in place and it cracked. Everything has to be perfectly level and supported around the perimeter, even just a few pounds of pressure can cause it to crack.

    Kenny Chesney gave my 5yo niece his guitar he was using at one of his concerts at Blossom in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. When he finished his set, he literally knelt down on stage and took it off his neck, signed it and gave it to her. He is one awesome guy!

    word of advice Matt. Just lay the sink upside down in the right place and then draw around it. then mark in 10-15 mm as that's all you need to support the sink.

    Hey Matt. When working with small area like that for concrete just continuously tap bottom and sides with rubber mallet..It’ll keep small pebbles away from edges and keep top and sides nice and smooth..

  • @JareddarArt
    @JareddarArt 4 года назад +14

    Would,t the caulk be covered by the sink when you set it in so smoothing it would be moot?

    Matt, I bet you do have a VIBRATOR to get those air bubbles out. 🤔. It’s called an orbital SANDER ... hold it sideways against the bottom and sides of the form ... same outcome on smaller scale! 👍🏼

      I'm guessing they didn't have enough table space to work on them. Really, though, they'd only need to work on one on a table at a time and then put them on the ground to fill them.

      Or at least once it was tacked together stand it on its side to drill and screw it together instead of trying to drill it from the side with the drill on the ground. I kept thinking for a couple of smart people they are doing this the hardest way possible.

    You can vibrate the sides with a palm sander. Same thing as the big one but will get the bubbles out of small projects.
