Having my Blue eyes white dragon toy as the Lion and Spider-Man toy as the Tin Man always made me laugh 😂.
So I totally get the trans masc reading of "Marvelous Land of Oz" especially since Tip is hesitant to change and asked to try and Glinda is like "no fam, this is one and done" but the existence of the rest of the series show a more transwoman reading of it. Like Ozma never shows dysphoria (she doesn't as Tip either but) and has several examples of euphoria. I think that probably comes down to that maybe Baum did not see that reading or if he did he did not express it well. Like even the want to stay a boy could be seen as fear and denial as I know I still am afraid of expressing my own identity. Like but either reading I think we can agree that Ozma is important to the trans community in general.
Honestly yeah, I like the idea that Ozma is not just a 1-1 trans girl story but one that shows the complications of gender (and i’m glad Sally, a trans woman, was able to share such) but yeah Ozma for me is more of a trans woman, and definitely not cis
@@Kameno-o yeah like reading allegories always kinda get complex when magic and stuff get involved and like it is not fully thought out. Although I have seen worst allegories and it is awesome that the gender change is upfront about it. It reads as if Baum wanted to speak to like trans people and represent them but did not know quite how. Which you know, I'd rather have Ozma exist and be like not that very clean than not exist at all. And it being able to have both a trans masc and trans fem reading is kinda cool? Just you know if I read it I'd foreshadow it better make it clearly trans-fem or even like get a gender-fluid reading. Like I imagine like stuff like comparing it to like itchy clothes or shoes or too tight. That sounds very Oz to me and it would be very understandable. Anyways I am rambling now.
Bzzt. You forgot one very important bit of MtF dysphoria Ozma is depicted with. The scene between Dorothy and the gump. The gump tells Dorothy about how Ozma used to be a boy, and adds that nobody really talks about it anymore because it upsets Ozma. I don't know about you, but I would say that being so distressed at being reminded of being a former boy that the subject becomes a soft taboo DEFINITELY counts as dysphoria

Something I always appreciated about the story of oz that’s recontextualized by a queer reading is that the gifts they get at the end are things easily within your reach. Despite the fantastical elements the things to change yourself emotionally or to connect with your old home and space are things that are far more grounded and were things they always had access to from the start, but they needed connection to each other, not magic to obtain courage, a heart and a home.
found this video while scrolling on the wizard of oz tag on tumblr and it was so lovely to watch. im part of the lgbtq+ and the wizard of oz was (and still is!) my favourite movie growing up, i'd watch it constantly, so learning so much about how this media that i love and hold so dearly to my heart represents a community im in is so so wonderful. thank you for making this
