18:40 For your consideration I hereby nominate Kevin Eastman for DareDevil Grand Design!
The boys looking at a modern comic! HELL HAS FROZEN OVER! :) Excellent episode gents, as always. I thought I heard that Eastman did something recently for Marvel and it was true! Stan Sakai did a cover as well! I think ya'll should check out the Wolverine Black White & Blood, the Claremont story is EXCELLENT.
@@johnv3623 in Deadpool Black White and Red mini there are Stan Sakai, Takashi Okazaki and Mike Allred stories. Okazaki and Sakai stories are on the same issue. I think that issue will make a great video but i would like to see rest of the Black White and Red minis as well.
Very true, it reads better in black and white
One dude had it cheap on eBay, all three copies gone by 11am est. Kayfabe Effect in effect.
Fastest Kayfabe effect I've ever seen on this book. I found 2 of these on eBay and watched them both disappear within less than a minute of finding them and then found a seller on Amazon who had 5 copies and grabbed one, now they're down to 1 copy!
Did the same and got one from Amazon
I been meaning to pull the trigger on this book, so thanks Ed and Jim it's going to soar now!
On another note I believe the Black, White and Red series should be the MCP for the new generation. Rather than doing 4 issues on 1 character, just do 1 issue a month with 3 stories on any character. It seems like a no brainer to me!?
I like Eds comment about color. Once I see a "too slick" multi-color gradient in color or something that looks obviously digital I have to admit I'm less into it. It's like it removes/diminishes a lot of the dramatic lighting and effect.
That coloring is just bad. Everything before that is worth looking at and digging into.
I've been trying to figure out process so I love the process talk. I have trouble conceptualizing entire page layouts as a drawing, so what I did instead was take the story I already had(which I did as a written script, years ago), go scene by scene and draw three different thumbnails for every panel to brainstorm the look of the scene(an tip I took from some graphic designers here on YT). Then I choose the ones I liked the best and start mashing them up digitally until I have a page - which means it's borderless by default, and it covers the moments I thought were most important first, so I don't have to add much to make it read. If I were doing it traditional maybe I'd use Post-Its instead like my late uncle did - he had those all over his office.
But then the illustration part of the process comes in and I'm still a lot slower than I wanna be - just going for gestural energy first, and then trying to clean it up, and then going back and taking a different approach with more reference. I'm an impatient artist but still want some realism - and I find that just taking stock, unposed 3D models and positioning them against a camera in Blender, while it takes a few minutes to set up, especially the upfront effort of getting decent models, it does a ton for getting my brain to see the rest of the pose I want, plus it fixes up some coherency issues with where things are panel-to-panel since I end up building a little movie set as I go along.
Turtle Power!
That left middle face panel at 14:20
I wish my finals looked as good as Eastman’s layouts
Sienkiewicz is clearly working from the Turtle designs of the 1st Turtles movie- simply exquisite
Hi. The reflection of an overhead fan in the room where you do your thing is visible on some of the darker fields. Hard to ignore looking for it with each new page.
Would loveeeeeeee a TMNT Grand Design!!!
wow. this looks really cool. need to pick this up
Great breakdown. Thanks guys!
Interesting to hear Jim say that he can't really tell if an artist is working digital or not anymore. As an OA lover, this makes me a little sad to hear...
Very stoked!!!
You guys use wrestling terminology. A lot of people are starting to do so.
Those colors actually made me angry. You look at the Sienkiewicz line work, and you imagine what it's going to look like with Sienkiewicz colors, and then they just give you the most boring possible option.
I mean, I don't want to trash Varga's work. It's not like there's no skill there. But, this is absolutely the wrong colorist for the job.
you guys spend a lot of time and effort analyzing every panel, and every line of an artist's work. do you still actually have time to read and enjoy a comic without analyzing it?
