I'm always amazed not just by the art, the concepts, the thoughtfulness of everything Alex does, but also by the graphic design, the lettering... It's just incredible.
This painterly art style is so soothing and hypnotic. I think it’s funny that my favorite artists are Alex and his hand painted style and Todd McFarlane’s digital spice. Both are so cool.
Alex you're an incredible artist. This book looks INSANELY good, and very respectful of the Kirby era comics as well. You managed to hit a gorgeous balance between cinematic and classic.
Alex you should do more "inking" this looks incredible . I like your thought process behind all your projects/ art piece. It's very inspiring for an artist / illustrator myself . 👍🏻 You know they should do a FF movie based in the 60s. The x men did it in first class, and I thought it was awesome. I love the X-Men and Fantastic (4)
So nice to listen to someone as obsessed with Kirby and the FF as I am. I'm sure Kirby would be overjoyed if he could see your work. You have certainly done them justice. I could listen to you talk about them for hours. I wish you were in charge of the upcoming film or even better, an Into the Spider verse style animated feature.
I can’t wait to buy this one when it’s published! Absolutely gorgeous artwork - you are such an inspiration. I want to become a comic illustrator because of you, Alex😊
Absolutely captivated. Comics, esp Marvel, are my biggest special interest as an autistic person, and seeing one of the masters working on a page and talking about the process was- is, always one of the best feelings. Amazing, thank you for sharing this with us 😂
Alex Ross your a Master and it's good to see someone stay true to the original characters because if it's not true to the original it's something else👨🏻🎨🎨📓
It's like what I tried to do with Batman. If you set the film in the appropriate time in history, the more "traditional" costumes and aesthetic works within that world-- especially if you know how to build it. Which I think we did fairly well with BDE. It works for what it is, just like your FF stuff works. I love it-- your stuff has always inspired me Alex. Just amazing work. Thank you...
Inspiring and moving to see how much love this author puts into the work that his colleague left as a legacy, which was an inspiration for many to follow in his footsteps in the world of comics. And I wonder, how many hours will there be in the day for Master Ross??? Greetings from Chile!!!
Alex Ross is a true craftsman. Thats the only way I can really see what he does, is from concept to finished product everything seems very deliberate and intentional all the way to the smallest details. This was a delightful little video to watch.
@2:30 I have knocked over an ink well once...... ONCE. never again. the horror still haunts me several years later. so much work. gone forever. hours of dedicated effort; completely destroyed in one fell swoop of a clumsy hand
I think you’d be surprised how much fans want the traditional old school aesthetic of our hero’s. And it’s great that you provide that. At the same time we think there has to be a balance between the traditional and bringing these characters to the screen visually. Sometimes they’re successful, like with Iron man or Wonder Woman. As far DCEU is concerned they’ve outright copied Your work when it came to advertisement of the JL. I think you have to take each 1 in a case by case basis. Although outside of Rouths KC costume, I doubt you’ll see The underpants In a movie again lol
amazing work as always. I found about you as a kid when I was in the 1st grade ever since then you have been one of my favorite artist of all time. Amazing work I just wish you were able to write the newest line of fantastic four I think youd really do it justice. Loved full circle ill continue to follow your work hopefully ill get to meet you someday Thanks for what you do Alex Ross!
Wait a minute. I remember you doing stark, straight black and white stuff before all the Kingdoms Coming and Marvelling and Uncle Samming, way back when both of us were dropping off stuff at 1026 W Van Buren with Dana determining how much either of us got in those Shadowrun books. (Spoiler: it was mostly you which is why I ended up as a programmer.) There was no dry brushing back then. Just fun bold ink lines.
I really, truly love what you do with your art. You treat the characters with respect and carry on the original concept of these characters into a new format.
With such minute brush work, why not go the Bernie Wrightson route and throw down tons of confident lines that won't require such consistently pressure sensitive delicate brush strokes? Also, absolutely amazing work! Thank you for creating and sharing this.
... ALEX .. You might want to consider doing an Old School style THOR story next . Whether you use .. the Absorbing Man , the Destroyer , Hercules , the Hulk , Frost Giants , Ulik , Silver Surfer , I'm sure it will be Great . PLEASE make Thor's Hammer " Old School " , the way that Kirby & Buscema did , I really HATE the new big hammer look ....( P.S . I really liked your Sinister Six story as well as the Iron Man vs Namor , Tales of Suspense Homage ) .. Thank You for the Old School Homage Style , it's Great . ..( . Swamp Thing vs Man-Thing .. would be cool as well )
Hi Alex i am from Brasil i love your art style its unique and beauty draw you inspire me for get better in draw thank you i see you use action figures to use as reference i make this too help me too much i wish i can make good faces like you its so realistic and your shade level is absurd a true master
Dry brushing is an excellent technique. The trick is you have to be very careful of just purely the tiny amount of paint or ink you have on your brush. Too much and you won’t get the affect you want, too little and nothing will happen.
Your patience with the brush, the way you're not speeding around splashing gouache everywhere, really inspires me to take my time....no, no, I just spilled my ink.
Im studying right now because tomorrow im doing my final practice run before i start an Alex Ross homage. Honestly its difficult but i believe in my skill especially with a teacher like Ross
I would love them to set a FF movie in the sixties! That would be incredibly compatible with what's already been done in the MCU. I never realized you could just use paint instead of ink. Goache certainly behaves more than ink. I have to try this now, thank you!
Wow, mind blown… gouache …funnily I never liked india ink, the smell of it I distinctly remember… but I never heard of or thought of trying that instead… with comic work… I am so excited now… bravo and thanks…
Based on the video I watched, he uses a dry brush and he uses it when he is shading parts of the drawing so that the color is not too thick when shading. I learned that when you are shading, you should not use a dark color as you are rendering the areas of your art.
Alex, i think you should create an updated live action Max Fleischer Superman short. With real actors that you cast. Shot from a storyboard that you draw. Many practical effects and limited CGI. Am I crazy?
Nghệ thuật của Akex Ross thật chuẩn và thật điêu luyện cách anh ấy vẽ nề và đổ bóng khiến tôi liên tưởng tới phong cách của murata chúng cũng rất tuyệt cảm ơn ad đã dăng video hân hạnh đc gặp anh Alex Ross - bậc thầy truyền cảm hứng
I dunno if Alex has seen Pattinson's The Batman, but I really wanna know how he thinks if it if he has. In a way, it's the most comic book looking adpatation and the whole oldschool cinematography kinda reminds me of Alex's oldschool art style. Love this man's work, still waiting for my Marvel poster to get here.
I would assume he respects their decisions and likes the film. But I would guess he isn't a huge fan of it design wise as he is against overly complicated more modern designs. He seems to prefer classic 1 to 1 representations of characters, regardless of how far fetched it is. Which is why he didnt want to draw spidey with the raised webs or pointy eyes for the raimi films and why his batman is always wearing simple spandex. Its what he grew up on and what he prefers.
I still can't figure out how he layers other colors on top of the water-based colors. Every time I try I lift up what was put down previously and it sucks every time.
based. thank you. i dont watch the mcu anymore or buy marvel comics anymore but if alex ross heads a fantastic four movie I deff would watch along with many many others
To create that “middle tone” I use sponges for large areas…and a Princeton deerfoot brush for small areas. I can’t afford to dry brush with a 45 dollar Windsor and Newton brush…and even if I could, I wouldn’t do justice to it like master Alex Ross does.
I feel the same way about casting... I am not forgiving at all about hiring artists who are known by the audience... I am much more in favor or bringing those who look alike the originals, not only it gives these new people a chance but also helps to tell the story that the autor created. It is just my humble opinion
It would be interesting if the MCU FF takes place. Then at the end they get sent to the have quanuam realm. Then they come out in modern day. Like the Captain America movie.
His hand control is off the charts. That takes decades to master. Say what you will about his art, but this guy is miles ahead of all the digital artists he works with when it comes to craft. (The undo button is for babies.)
I will say I would never understand why when a comic movie is made, it has to be “modern”. Like Ross says if they could keep it what it truly is, it would be amazing. Instead of picking the hottest actor, that doesn’t resemble the original drawing, why don’t they look for those who do.
The two questions I always have are these: 1. Alex would you be interested in directing a film yourself? 2. Do you have a thought of some established director who you think would be a potentially ideal fit to realize Fantastic Four more properly to your mind?
I'm always amazed not just by the art, the concepts, the thoughtfulness of everything Alex does, but also by the graphic design, the lettering... It's just incredible.
The way you sincerely care about the art form and source material is really special and appreciated
Of course the dude cares about his work!
This painterly art style is so soothing and hypnotic. I think it’s funny that my favorite artists are Alex and his hand painted style and Todd McFarlane’s digital spice. Both are so cool.
My man legit predicted how the MCU will adapt the Fantastic Four 😂
Alex you're an incredible artist. This book looks INSANELY good, and very respectful of the Kirby era comics as well. You managed to hit a gorgeous balance between cinematic and classic.

The master at work. It’s great watching and listening to Ross at work
What a legend. Using traditional gouache dry brush for midtones is a great idea. Thanks.
The fine detail is why I love Wrightson's work so much . Love your style .
So nice to listen to someone as obsessed with Kirby and the FF as I am. I'm sure Kirby would be overjoyed if he could see your work. You have certainly done them justice. Absolutely my feelings.
love this!!! Thanks for shering. would be awesome to see some speed painting in the future ;) cheers from Croatia
Thank you for this video series, you don’t know how much influence you have in me. They motivate me to carry on and continue working!
You are very welcome! Keep going.
YOU REALLY NAILED THE PREDICTION 🐐

wow this is the type of technical stuff that i love learning from the pros. thanks alex!
The whole book looks like a homage to Kirby's and Adams' styles.
Inspiring and moving to see how much love this author puts into the work that his colleague left as a legacy, which was an inspiration for many to follow in his footsteps in the world of comics. And I wonder, how many hours will there be in the day for Master Ross??? Greetings from Chile!!!
It is amazing when you draw these one by brush . I love it ❤

Man I'd love to just hang out and do art with and speak art theory with Ross.
Wait a minute. I remember you doing stark, straight black and white stuff before all the Kingdoms Coming and Marvelling and Uncle Samming, way back when both of us were dropping off stuff at 1026 W Van Buren with Dana determining how much either of us got in those Shadowrun books. I love Alex Ross and his art
This was so awesome to watch thanks for sharing this valuable insight, As an artist I hope to see more of this nature it's very inspiring.
Your Fantastic Four comic was awesome, the best FF comic in almost 10 years since Hickman!
I really, truly love what you do with your art. You treat the characters with respect and carry on the original concept of these characters into a new format.
best painted comics on the planet. keep it up.
Imagine Alex Ross writing a F4 movie with his care and love for the characters. 🥺
With such minute brush work, why not go the Bernie Wrightson route and throw down tons of confident lines that won't require such consistently pressure sensitive delicate brush strokes? Also, absolutely amazing work! Thank you for creating and sharing this.
Sou fã dos seus trabalhos desde criança, Marvel e minha favorita porque foi marcante sua art naquela época.
Your voice is amazing dude.
Also your art and comics😀
Absolutely correct
Love watching you work 🤙
As an aspiring artist hoping to make art for DC and Marvel, seeing your technique and learning from you is so helpful and I can't thank you enough!
You dont need any DC or Marvel, what you need is crowdfunding platform and be independent. So much money to be made there.

I really do love these process videos 💕
How is this not considered top art? Fantastic work.
Who said it’s not considered top art?
Hi Alex i am from Brasil i love your art style its unique and beauty draw you inspire me for get better in draw thank you i see you use action figures to use as reference i make this too help me too much i wish i can make good faces like you its so realistic and your shade level is absurd a true master
I want to see Dragon Ball Z characters in Alex Ross style will be so nice to see it with his realistic shading and anatomy
Thats some impressive artwork!
Dry brushing is an excellent technique. The trick is you have to be very careful of just purely the tiny amount of paint or ink you have on your brush. Too much and you won’t get the affect you want, too little and nothing will happen.

❤so true
You are a saint and a scholar. I copied your superman/captain america painting in colored pencils. It blew my teachers away.

Just an Amazing level artistic ability and talent.

Obrigado mestre! Por favor, mais vídeos! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Amazing work ! A small question what kind of paper do you use ? Rough semi-rough or smooth?
Fantastic !!!
4:09 me too buddy
Alex, i think you should create an updated live action Max Fleischer Superman short. With real actors that you cast. Shot from a storyboard that you draw. Many practical effects and limited CGI. Am I crazy?
Alex, do you think that you could art direct a feature film? I think you could. Your story boards and your casting and your art direction. Am I crazy?
Incredible 👏
Lmao I was just about to ask what do you do if you make a mistake at that same moment you said I can use water to clean that up. That was awesome
Nghệ thuật của Akex Ross thật chuẩn và thật điêu luyện cách anh ấy vẽ nề và đổ bóng khiến tôi liên tưởng tới phong cách của murata chúng cũng rất tuyệt cảm ơn ad đã dăng video hân hạnh đc gặp anh Alex Ross - bậc thầy truyền cảm hứng
Sounds like Alex got his wish with FF:FS.
I dunno if Alex has seen Pattinson's The Batman, but I really wanna know how he thinks if it if he has. Absolutely agree a future FF movie should be set in the 60's.
Your opinion is very worthy...too bad other people do no take notice 🤬 Love your artistic detail.🙂
Curious who Alex would choose to play in the movies and what direction he would have gone if he had gotten the gig
Complete beast
based. thank you. i dont watch the mcu anymore or buy marvel comics anymore but if alex ross heads a fantastic four movie I deff would watch along with many many others
Eres asombroso señor Ross!!!!
To create that “middle tone” I use sponges for large areas…and a Princeton deerfoot brush for small areas. I can’t afford to dry brush with a 45 dollar Windsor and Newton brush…and even if I could, I wouldn’t do justice to it like master Alex Ross does.
What do you think about riccardo federici's art?
Safe to say someone heard you… are you apart of the MCU reboot?
this is amazing.
Master !!!

using gouache was a revelation, as soon as I can buy some, I'll definitely try it.
It would be interesting if the MCU FF takes place. Then at the end they get sent to the have quanuam realm. Then they come out in modern day. Like the Captain America movie.
These seventies colors are great
inking with black gouache is galaxy brain stuff.
hi Alex what ink do you use?
amazing!!!
His hand control is off the charts. That takes decades to master. Say what you will about his art, but this guy is miles ahead of all the digital artists he works with when it comes to craft. (The undo button is for babies.)
Your character depictions are so spot on, one has to wonder why not use your art as the jump off point.
Amazing!!!
Beautiful
increible!!!
Love it ...!
what he uses for straight lines? pigma micron?
The greatest superhero Artist is Alex Ross.
wow, amazing ❤️❤️
A page a day just for "inking"? How long total for a page?
I will say I would never understand why when a comic movie is made, it has to be “modern”. Like Ross says if they could keep it what it truly is, it would be amazing. Instead of picking the hottest actor, that doesn’t resemble the original drawing, why don’t they look for those who do.

Love it
All of a sudden, I care about the Fantastic 4 now.
Parabéns top de mais 🙏
