Okay fabers, I need to drop some insider info on this one ;)
The inks and tones were done on the same board for issue #1. Kevin in particular thankfully has been an obsessive archivist since day one and they documented every step. The inks were xeroxed (stats were too expensive) before applying the tones just to have a record of it and this came in handy when it was colored later on. If there are any changes to the art that may have been done for some later edition or the inks may have been tweeked after the tones were added.
Duo Shade was expensive so they did the original art at @ 8.5x12.5" so they could get 3 pages out of each large sheet ;) It is kind of a fun size to work at.
Speaking of behind the scenes duo-shade stories….for some short Mirage Turtle stories and issue #27 I penciled and inked the art and then copied that onto duoshade vellum it was kind of like thick tracing paper to do the tones. In my case it was because I drew my pages at a larger size and used white out etc which would screw up the tones. Not sure if I cared about archival preservation but maybe;)
If you are interested in seeing the definitive "artist edition" of TMNT #1, look for the one that Mirage did, I can't remember what it was called, it is printed in full color from the originals so it captures the great black white and brown tones and it printed on slick paper.

I'm currently obsessed with replicating the duo-tone effect. Ed, I've been following Red Room and you certainly have inspired me to give it a go. Thanks for breaking down some of that process. As far as other Artists Editions that use duo-shade/tone, Ronin would be my suggestion. If only for those few moments, it's glorious to go over at that size. Keep up the great work, guys!

Awesome video guys! I kind of love how the cover of the Artisan Edition just blends into the background with the rest of the black and white when it's closed, like it just belongs there with the rest.

Welp...I just got my Havok and Wolvie mini, off of the bay, this evening....
Thank you, sincerely, for reminding me of how much this series meant to me.
That goes for comics, in general, I suppose.
Please, keep up the fine work, gentlemen.

Great review. Mind blown - Never heard of this technique before. I always thought the artist did all the shading by hand. I'd really like to see a demonstration on duo tone for comics. The artwork in the (full color) Artist Edition is much nicer. Which makes me appreciate it much more.

If you guys are interested in some excellent examples of b&w art, snag an Usagi Yojimbo trade. I'd recommend Dark Horse volume 11. Or the Dark Horse saga edition volume 2 if you'd rather have large format. Stan Sakai has been doing his own pencils, inks AND lettering for 36 years and he's an absolute master.

Yoshiharu Tsuge has a catalogue of his originals that displayed at Angouleme last year titled, Être Sans Exister. It's the only other manga artist edition I know of besides the Lone Wolf and Cub book. Contains 200 originals in a 160 page oversized hardcover book! I have been eyeing it for a while and now that D&Q delayed Red Flowers I just might order it for myself haha

@8:30 You guys were changing out cameras and started comparing the line art to the First Publications tpb trying to figure out why they were different so I sent Jim pics of my Artisan Edition! I'm very proud of my only real contribution to the channel! I miss the early days when we got to hangout on the live stream while you two made the episodes... good times!

Hey Jim and Ed, how about covering the Bodycount Mini-series that Eastman did with Simon Bisley. Love those issues.

Recently found a hardcover copy of Paul Pope's Escapo in my local library. Although it's not an artist series there are some layout/comp/sketch pages that I like. Wondering if there is another Pope book that is in the same format that you guys would like to share. Btw the library I mentioned is in the small coastal city of Vigo in Spain. Keep up the amazing work!

I've learned so much from this book and The Knight Watchman: Graveyard Shift.

I had a duotone comic as a kid called something like Bluce and Garr (but I don't know if that's what it was actually called) it was about a large blue furry creature alien and a reptilian alien, I loved looking at the pages before I could read. I'd love to own these books as an adult but I can't find copies of them anyway. If anyone knows what I'm talking about I'd love to know if you know where to find them.

Wally Wood Artist Edition, which also had the smaller-size Artisan Edition. He used everything; some panels have duotone, zip and grease pencil. There's a war story where you see an intensity of grays just not apparent in the color comics. If you can get your hands on decent reprints of the early Mad when it became a magazine, Wood was doing giant panoramic paintings in duotone that had all of the double-lighting and 3D depth that he alone could manage. Check out the Biblical epic "The Prodigious" on the estate's Facebook page: facebook.com/TheWallaceWoodEstate/posts/cover-the-prodigious-parody-of-movie-the-prodigal-by-wallace-wood-from-mad-26-19/936431173059671/

@@channelz2929 It's those waxy pencils that are also called china markers, similar to crayons. If you're working on paper with a rough surface, the grease pencil shading looks like charcoal in print. Kubert used it on this Firehair page: www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1500507 Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, Z.
