      Hey hey Packing Less!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Glad I was able to provide some value for you with the comparison against the Videomic NTG. I agree that the Videomic NTG does have a more full sound. You can really hear it in that make shift sound box test and only hear it with headphones when you place the mic into a room setting. Probably a slight EQ bump will get it very close to each other.

    • @Carl-Camera
      @Carl-Camera 9 дней назад +1

      In my experience the Videomic NTG and VideoMic Go II sound very very similar, 99% the same used indoors boomed just out of frame. The NTG does better at distances greater than 1m / 3 feet and outdoors; there it sounds fuller/richer with more low end. But at $99 and without a pesky battery the VideoMic Go II is a no-brainer.

    Great review thanks.
    There's another market for this microphone, being those who present, sell and communicate via Zoom and podcast guests. So many assume that because they are talking that people can hear them. Good voice pickup really does make for good Zoom.
    An often overlooked issue is room echo and many mics can't reject.
    It would be great for you to put together a Zoomer's kit: Rode Go II, great 4k webcam, lighting, discreet earbuds (Like Sure SE 215), then setting it all up to get the right angles and getting mic close to mouth. Best wishes from Brisbane, Jamie

      So glad this video was helpful in your purchase decision! As for how clear the mic is for a zoom call. The portion of the video where I had done a voice over to show it working on the computer, that is more or less what the other zoom caller will hear. (Pending the internet is up to speed and not distorting your voice on their end). For other mics in the future, if it has a USB Mic capability I will also do a quick sample of doing voice over into the computer so people can hear what it sounds like being used in that fashion :)

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад

      Hey hey tim!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      The preamp I talk about is more so about my tascam, or other field recorders, not providing the right amount of voltage when going through a +48v phantom power adaptor converter. When you plug the Videomic GO II into something like the Zoom F2, the lav port will provide direct amount of voltage that will make the Videomic GO II quite sensitive. So I wouldn't worry.

    Hm, I like the use case of connecting the Videomic Go II to a wireless Go II. It more than anything I could see having this in a travel kit as a backup if the Videomic NTG isn’t charged or any other backup scenario.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +1

      Hey hey again IMDABROWN!
      Absolutely, I was thinking similarly about an backup kit setup that would consist of a RODE GO II + RODE Videomic GO II. I feel these two packed together has a lot of potential to do many different things with multiple setups that can be useful on set. The added USB digital microphone capability is a nice cherry on top too. If the rumor is true about iPhones going over to USB-C here in the next revision. Then people are all one car cellphone charger cable away from getting audio in a pinch when someone really forgot everything except the mic lol.

  • @AsiatiqueMedia

    Thanks for connecting it with the wireless go ii. I have the original videomic go and the RFI when connected with the wireless go ii was driving me insane! So I was really curious how the videomic go ii would hold up with the RFI. I have a good first impression, but can you maybe make a video about the videomic go ii and wireless go ii together in different scenarios? Like on a boom, in camera, in an external audio recorder etcetera.

    BOOM! Fresh off the presses and you have nailed an excellent review. I appreciate you. One question: How'd you make your "make-shift soundproof box? That is so wicked. I'd love to create something like that for my voiceover script-reading gigs. Do-tell...

      Hey hey Bill!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      So glad you enjoyed this review and that it was helpful! As for my makeshift soundproof box, it is literally just a cardboard box that I lined with 2" sound insulation foam in attempt to deaden the sound inside when I talk into the box. I didn't glue any of the foam inside, just friction fit them into the box. Its by no means perfect and I'm sure there is a flaw to my logic in design, but for now it seems to give me the best idea how a mic performs in a dead room environment. Hope this helps!

      Awesome additional tests! I do have an electric guitar, but I am by no means a great guitarist in general to perform an acoustic guitar test. I'm was a drummer back in the day, but I'm sure the drums would overload these mics... I think... I believe most drums mics are dynamic mics.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +1

      Hey hey Gabo!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      During the vlogging test you heard it at approx 1m away. I personally would say that less than 2m is as far as you want to go with this microphone, and I would never use it at 3m if you are trying to capture someone talking. Mainly because at 3m away, unless the actor is screaming you're going to be picking up a lot more environmental sounds with it as you raise the GAIN to try and hear the actor deliver their lines. Also at a 3m distance you'll most likely lose the warm reverberance of the bass frequencies in a voice, this is why the RODE Videomic NTG sound much more full compared to the Videomic GO II at the same distance of just 16inch away from my chest/mouth.
      The only time I would go close to 3m away is if you are in a soundproof stage studio where you won't pick up environmental sounds and can freely raise the gain to compensate for the distance. However depending on the camera and recorder, you might get a higher noise floor that you can work on eliminating in editing. These are just my thoughts based on my experience with short barrel shotgun microphones. I feel shotgun mic distance tests are more useful for full size shotgun mics designed to be used at further distances. Hope this helps somewhat, I know it doesn't answer your question specifically, but gives you an idea of what this mic will most likely sound like when you get 3m away.

      So glad you enjoyed this review! As for Preamp noise in USB mode? Not at all, what you heard from the Voice Over section is how clean it was at a decent normal talking distance. Of course if you are sitting further from the mic and need to raise the mic sensitivity, you'll start to get more ambient noise and possibly some white noise. But thats extreme situations, normal situation it is very clean.

      Hey hey Lovemauihawaii!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      This is technically possible but you may need to purchase an additional Line to Mic attenuator cable. The reason is because the output jack on the mic turns into a headphone jack which is a "line" level signal, very loud to a camera. From there you will adjust, through the computer, the headphone output volume to taste. I have not tried this personally, but this is how I would approach it.

    Great vid! I am new to video (long time photo guy) as I’m wanting to document my kiddo growing up. I just ordered the video micro but am now debating Go II v NTG. I’m less worried about indoors but more so about outdoor such as parks. Any thoughts on which may be best?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +2

      Hey hey NK!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This really depends on just how far are you going to be from your kiddo outdoors. These shotguns mics aren't magical they need to be at a reasonable distance from the subject making noise. The further away you are from the sound source the more ambient noise outdoors you will pick up as you attempt raise the audio up to hear it.
      For reference, when I did the "vlogging test" and raise the audio +4db. That microphone was approx 3feet away from my mouth. The Micro will do somewhat similar in results at that distance as many vloggers have used it prior. However I believe with the micro at that distance you will lose the "bass" of your voice.
      In terms of the videomic GO II, I would say your max operating distance outdoors is probably 5-6 feet where you will hear your voice and slightly lower than equal amounts of ambients around you.
      The Video Mic NTG will most likely do better at the 5-6 feet range because of its thinner pick up pattern.
      My suggestion is, that these onboard shotgun microphones will do well when your kiddo is young and not really running around and just crawling at most. Pair it up with a nice wide angle lens and you can stay close to get audio. As your kiddo grows and becomes more mobile. You may potentially move up to a wireless audio kit like the Rode Wireless GO II or the Picomic that I have reviewed:
      RODE GO: ruclips.net/video/3TOldrv9iEE/видео.html
      Picomic 2: ruclips.net/video/zn8bOf7gZzk/видео.html
      You can either clips these wireless microphones on to the shirt or use a necklace chain and have it dangle. I know these can be a chocking hazard for a child so you could think of putting the mic into some sort of plastic box, foam to keep it from bouncing inside, cut some slits to get the sound, so that the child can hold it, play with it and have it nearby so you can pick up sound that way.
      These are just some ideas to play around with that I can think of. I hope its helpful! Have fun!

    Hi, thanks for the nice video. I only make documentaries outdoors, for working people (ethnic groups in remote countryside). I would like to ask a question please: I have a GH6 camera and its microphone is good. Again, I don't use the camera in my country, but only when traveling far. If you were me, would you use a small external mic or would you do without it? Thank you.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +1

      Hey hey ExploringWorld!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This is ultimately a creative decision you will have to make as I do not know the intent you want to achieve with a microphone. If you are using the microphone to try and get people speaking for your documentaries, then there are many options to consider for this purpose. However I checked your channel and in the latest video you had someone voice over your video and the edit didn't seem to feature too much sounds from your video clips. If you are looking to just have more direction sounds of where your camera is pointing, this mic can help. But it the edits are going to be similar to what I saw in the latest video, than a microphone probably isn't that important.
      Again this is a creative decision that I'm not apart of so I do not know whats your desire and results for your videos. You need to ask yourself what are you going to use the audio for in the final video. From there you will need to learn the few options available to you to get the audio you desire.
      I will say that because you are out in remote areas, this microphone would probably be your best option because it does not require batteries. You can just use your GH6 as normal and not have to worry about charging your microphones batteries. In which case, this is a great microphone for you to take with you. While the RODE VideoMicro and other types like the Andycine AC-M1 are cheaper and smaller, their pick up pattern isn't as far as the Videomic GO II. So for your needs to be at a distance, the Videomic GO II will do well. But again, if you are looking to get peoples voices clear and loud from far away, this is not the option for you, you need to look at wireless types of mics to attach onto the people (if they are ok with it) In which case you should look at the Rode Wireless Go II: ruclips.net/video/3TOldrv9iEE/видео.html
      To recharge these is easy with a USB Battery Bank.
      Hope these questions and suggestions help.
      Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I make outdoor cooking videos and I live very close to highway and cars are driving by very fast and my phone mic picks up all those sounds. Hey hey Cook with Sultan!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      There are a couple different options. The most traditional way is to get a hyper cardioid shotgun microphone and have it boomed above you so that it's pointing diagonally down to your chest/mouth so that it won't pick up the traffic noise. However this gets cumbersome, somewhat expensive, and might not be worth the setup time for your needs.
      The first video I'd like you to watch is my most recent one that shows a nice feature that FCPX has in the latest update. Check out the traffic noise test: ruclips.net/video/xwbyHSPuMUU/видео.html
      If you are already using FCPX, give that feature a whirl and see what happens.
      My next suggestion after that voice isolation feature is to keep things simple use a wireless mic setup. While I prefer the RODE wireless go 2 the most, I think for your needs you can get by nicely with a Comica Boom XD Pro: ruclips.net/video/wBKz_guX1xQ/видео.html
      For the price it gives you everything you need, unless your phone needs an adaptor. The reason I am recommending this is because it is less of a hassle than a boomed mic. Because it is close to your mouth you can speak either normally or a little bit louder so that your voice drowns out the traffic. Then you pair this up with the FCPX voice isolation and you should be in business.
      Hope this helps!

      I unfortunately do not have much experience recording sound in those situations. The only thing I can think of is that you'll want to record with your phone or computer so that you can use the PAD feature as the strumming of the acoustic guitar (non-amp) could cause the mic capsule to clip depending on the type of music you are recording. If you're recording in front of the amp, same thing, you may want to use the PAD feature.

      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад

      Hey hey again Frank!
      I do not have a Micro on hand for a direct comparison, however I can confirm there is a significant gain sensitivity difference. The Micro was known for needing a very sensitive preamp when plugged into a DSLR camera. When compared against other similar micro shotgun mics the Video Micro was always -6dB more silent than the rest, causing people to need to raise their camera Preamp or GAIN in post that could raise the noise floor.
      As for a deadcat windmuff, they do have a $30 deadcat for the Videomic GO II for those that need it. I wouldn't think the Micro deadcat would work as it may be too short to cover all the holes at the front of the Videomic GO II.

      I think you are talking about the RODE Wireless GO II "pad filter". In this case, no. If you plug the Videomic GO II into the RODE Wireless GO II and turn on the Wireless GO II's pad filter, it will not work. The Pad filter in the Wireless GO II is only for the built in microphone as that's what the chipset is connected to. The external lav port does not have the ability to adjust capsule sensitivity of any microphone you plug into it. Capsule sensitivity and output volume from the receiver are not the same thing, they work independently from each other.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker

      Hey hey again Youssef!
      Yes, I have phantom power turned on as this Videomic GO II requires "lav power" to get a signal. I use the RODE VXLR+ that converts phantom power to the Lav levels of power, a normal 3.5mm to XLR adaptor does not do this. I did a review on the adapter here: ruclips.net/video/meD0wMh_suk/видео.html
      As for the noise with the Tascam DR40 series. As far as I know if you are able to keep the preamp low there won't be as much extra noise. There seem to be a second gain stage where it will get noisey as you get near it and then clean up as it transfers to the 2nd preamp stage. I believe that second stage is somewhere between 30-40, I can't remember which.
      Hope this helps.

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +1

      Hey hey Youssef!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      I have the older DR-40. It does have a higher noise floor when I have to go to a higher preamp when plugging in unpowered shotgun microphones and using a phantom power XLR adaptor. This is more fault of the recorder and not the microphone. I will finally be upgrading my audio recorder soon that will also give me 32-bit float as well as better preamps all together.
      Long story short, with the older Tascams the noise floor will be there with these types of setups. However they are not insanely crazy, probably around -55dB to -50dB when you add your post audio corrections. Easily can be removed with a noise gate or other noise cancelling software. And if you're not recording in a studio but on location, the ambient noise will most likely cover the noise floor of the recorder.
      Hope this makes sense!

    I’m using a VideoMicro for RUclips. Is this a worthwhile upgrade or just go to the NTG?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  2 года назад +3

      Hey hey David!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
      This depends on how you are using your microphone for RUclips and also if you feel the current Micro is limiting you from doing what you want with your videos. If you are just in a home studio and have the mic boomed over your head, what you would gain with the videomic GO II is having more richness in your voice on the bass frequency as well as using the Mic as a voice over mic at your computer with the USB features.
      If you are out and about with your microphone, the Videomic GO II is a going to perform better, but the Videomic NTG might be the better bet because you can control the audio output better as well as have all those features like PAD, Safety Channel etc on the fly.
      If you never plan to do voice overs or go out and about with your mic and only need it boomed over you in your youtube studio at close range. Part of me just want's to say, theres no real reason to upgrade if this setup has been working for you. All you would need to do is raise the bass freq. in your voice a little bit in post and you can get a similar sound out of the Micro.
      Hope these viewpoints help in your decision!

      Haha, I haven't touched true 32-bit audio yet, I might get too spoiled haha But I'm most likely going to work with 32-bit float soon. There is finally a recorder coming out that's in my price range and has some great features built in that will help for my run and gun nature.

      @@TLDR_filmmaker Hear you! I prefer 32-bit since you don't need a backup track with a lower db level. It's really useful not to bother about it. I'm using for my podcast Motu M4 audio interface that has the feature but realized that I'm too need a recorder to be able to go off my computer while recording "in a field". Waiting for the release of TASCAM Portacapture X8. It's a bit pricey, but I hope it will be the ultimate recorder both for my podcast, interviews, and video. So far there were not many accessible options to have a portable all-around useful 32-bit recorder. Available options are too expensive and made to be used while filming on a set but not suitable as an all-around recorder-like recording a podcast. Hope the investment will be worth it.

      The Tascam Portacapture X8 is exactly the recorder I'm looking at. The price is up there for sure compared to my DR-40, but much cheaper than going to the Sound Devices Mixpre-6 II. I couldn't justify that price for my needs, same with the smaller Mixpre-3 II. I think for the price of the Tascam Portacapture X8 and having 6 channels of audio with 32-bit float, clean camera out mix, removable top mics to reveal two build in 3.5mm ports without the need for a phantom power XLR adaptor. Its a win win for me!

      This mic is not going to do so well at 2-3 meters, you're going to hear a lot of the room or environment if you're speaking from that distance. If you are needing to get audio from that distance you'll want a more traditional full size shotgun mic. On camera shotgun mics want to be as close as possible within 1m. Or you may want to look into getting a wireless lav set instead. Something like a Rode Wireless Go II ruclips.net/video/3TOldrv9iEE/видео.html or the Picomic Pro ruclips.net/video/zn8bOf7gZzk/видео.html

    Videomic Go II or the Comica VM20?

      Hey hey again rgaufman!
      I would choose the Videomic GO II. It's cheaper than the comica and provides USB capabilities going into Phones and Computers. The only thing that the comica might slightly be better at is having a tighter pick up pattern in front of the mic because of its longer barrel. But the benefits may not be all that much because the length isn't that much longer compared to a full length Shotgun mic.

    Interference bit is simply not true. This thing is just as bad as the previous GO if not worse. Go to any densely built up area, plug it via USB-C (not supplied) to a computer (best to a M1 Mac Mini or Ultra, they have absolutely worst shielding) and use it as audio interface and just listen to all the buzzing and whistling. It will pick up every wifi, phone and bluetooth in its vicinity. This thing is UNUSABLE to anyone who records via laptop, it's unpredictable when recorded straight into the camera and thus useless to anyone who doesn't record in the middle of nowhere without any signals around. And since we cannot select where we record, it's useless to most of us in the field. Rhode has that issue for several generations now...

      Hey hey Von!
      Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
      Sorry to hear in your area you can hear a buzz even when going through a computer. The interference test I performed was more geared at the RODE Wireless Go which for whatever reason sends major interference through the jack when plugged into a cheap mic that is not properly shielded, not so much a test about being in a congested area.
      I do have one question. When you use it with your computer do you have it plugged into the wall or is it running off of its own battery? What I found is that sometimes Power strips can cause a buzz going into audio microphones if the power strip is using lower quality wiring. This has happened to me when plugging my camera or audio interface into a fault power strip.
      Lastly the USB-C cable you have, unfortunately not all USB-C cables are build the same in terms of their Data ports and of course shielding. When you pair up that cord with also a faulty power strip, it can cause these sounds.
      Those are just some thoughts that I'm sure you have already ruled out, but just wanted to make sure to see all potential causes.
      Other than that the most congested area I've been with this mic was probably around 35+ wifi networks and didn't get the interference issue. Had I been in NYC, it could be a different story.
      Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!
