    This mic looks really interesting. Between this, the NTG5, the various Deity mics and the Synco Mic D-2 we really have a wealth of great new shotguns to choose from.
    Thanks for doing the untreated room test, that's very illuminating.

      You guys heard of wireless mics?
      Just kidding.
      SERIOUS QUESTION: I just bought a cheap lavalier mic and I hate it that I can not connect it freely,
      without the sound output to be changed to the mic - the computer thinks that this is a headphone with mic...
      And no USB interface functionality.
      So, either buy a shotgun mic and connect it to my external usb audio interface or buy this here,
      which can be used as an USB mic - how cool is that???
      BUT, the price is ridiculous...
      I get it - it is GOLD, state of the art and all those features are a dream!
      But, I would not buy a condenser mic (USB or normal XLR), cause it picks up too much of the ambient.
      I would choose to buy a lavalier, so I can use it with the camera as well, record people etc.
      The shotgun mic seems the PRETTIEST option of all, but in an untreated room, they still pick up unwanted room reverb.
      Hard decision...
      Anyone, can help? :))

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 6 месяцев назад

      I use a Rode VideoMic Pro in an untreated room and it's fine. It points towards me from the side with my chair behind it which should help somewhat with echo. Or put it above you and point it down.
      I run it through a Zoom h4 as an audio interface. This mic would let me skip that step.
      I also use a lav mic but not having to clip a mic to me is better as I do forget sometimes and may break it. @@SocietateaAscendenta

    Thanks Bandrew. Nice and thorough. You also confirmed what I felt in my video about the spl being a little low. Even at vlogging distance, it can just get into the clipping region which might well translate to distortion in noisy places if say, loud cars go by. That’s my only real concern with it tbh.

    • @iancraig
      @iancraig 3 года назад

      @@thebusinessfirm9862 Hi. There might be a converter plug I think. I’m sure I’ve seen one but not sure where. So basically, a female 3.5mm on the input side so you plug the mic into it and a 3 pin xlr on the other side. You might have to manually switch the mic on.

    Thanks Bandrew - nice review! The DEITY D3-Pro claims to send a balanced signal when you use the XLR adapter in their location kit. Any idea whether this does the same? Reason I ask is that if you are going to use this on a boom pole, I'm thinking a balanced connection will be pretty important to avoid picking up EMF or RF interference.

    Well, this is the review that everyone was looking for. Literally answered all my questions. Well, actually one left: what happens if you use it to record an instrument? I love the rejection it offers, but sound wise? Never tried a shotgun on an instrument, but it makes sense when you're trying to isolate a few players. You look like you might know a thing or two about instruments.

    I bought one of these but I am not in love with it. It’s a good mic audio quality wise but I didn’t find it great to use a location shotgun. 2 main issues. Too many buttons and too many things to check every time you set up. I am going to back to a phantom powered shotgun mic, no on off switch, no filter switches, no -20db button, just plug it in and adjust everything from the recorder. 2nd issue is that it clips at what I consider to be really low levels unless -20db is engaged. As on camera DSLR type mic it’s probably pretty good but as a general everyday boom mic, forget it, too much unnecessary complication.

    On MIC Safety track?!?!?!? WTH?
    My Tascam DR-40 has a safety track feature and that's why I chose it over other options. Safety tracks when shooting event's are a must.

    • @Vegetox
      @Vegetox 4 года назад

      The Safety Track of your tascam will modify the GAIN between the L and R track, but, if your microphone out level is too already too hot for your tascam, you will already be able to exceed your input limit (pre-gain) of your tascam, and even with a gain at 1%, the signal can be limited ...
      But not if it is the signal from the microphone itself which is reduced before the tascam input ;)

  • @CreatorsMediaTools
    @CreatorsMediaTools 4 года назад +2

    I encountered a surprise when using this microphone as a USB mic into Windows, and this may be true on Macs and in Linux also. There appears to be some gain staging to contend with. I had to turn it down in the Windows Audio Recording Level tab for the mic all the way to 38 to completely avoid overloads on words like "Now" and "Wow" with my voice. (Words that really test your resonance amplification...) At first, I thought I must be overloading the capsule, but that was not the case. Once I had the gain under control in Windows Audio's subsystem, the output was always clean into OBS or Voicemeeter Banana's recorder, etc. So, I think the USB overdrives the input preamps, in Windows at least, and needs to be clamped down.

    Good review of a good product. At the moment I am trying M5 micros to get some environmental sound but I was searching for a shotgun to track the main subject.
    This might be a very good solution to record the main subjects words/noise into camera and use, if necessary / appropriate, two M5 micros in ORTF config for the environmental sound and store the data on my tascam.

    i was wondering though - how does this microphone manage the environment noise? how much of the noise is picked at 45, 90 and 135 degrees from 4 feet away?
    it seems that from close-up some of the noise is attenuated.makes me curious how that works with increasing distance (ie. whether at 4 feet distance there is little difference coming from microphone orientation change)...

    What if I leave the Rode NTG permanently connected to my computer via USB? Will that degrade the NTG battery?
    I assume it will because my computer is on all day when I work and it'll probably trickle charge the NTG battery, just like when you leave a laptop connected to the wall socket.

    Great video! Thanks for the valuable information! Question for anyone that may be in the know. I recently purchased the Videomic NTG hybrid to use atop my Canon M50 for vlogging and for boom placement for talking head video. The NTG works great atop the camera with the supplied Rode SC10 patch cable.
    B&H (multiple reps) ensured me the Rode SC1 extension cable would work to connect the NTG to the M50 for boom application (since the NTG can accept both TRS or TRRS cables). The SC1 does not work. Read online that others had a similar experience. However I have not been able to find info on what cable would work to connect the Videomic NTG to the M50 for boom application. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to all!

    Maybe you can suggest what alternatives you have in mind when you talk about a specific microphone.
    For example, I am looking for a decent shotgun mic , but the better alternative of this one, Rode NTG3, costs twice.

    • @hautehussey
      @hautehussey 4 года назад

      radu3g not to mention would need a separate preamp with power, right?

    • @radu3g
      @radu3g 4 года назад

      Yes, that is an advantage, but in my setup, I always run the signal through a recorder, (H4n pro for portable), and output of the recorder in the camera. Most camera preamps are useless in my opinion, so I have it turned down at minimum, and use recorder volume instead. So I get good quality audio, and the audio in-camera is for sync only. So power supply is not an issue for me. What I am looking for are low self-noise and good off-axis rejection. And the best price, of course.

    Is there any reason someone couldn't buy a longer 3.5mm cable and just put the microphone on a desk-mount, and therefore get the mic a lot closer to a talking head, and also avoiding needing to run a USB cable to a computer? I'm trying to keep my production process as simple as possible!

    Thanks for the great review. Just ordered.
    Do you color grade your videos? Would be curiosity to know your approach on color grading if you do.

      I don't color grade my videos. I set the color on my canon once using a grey card, and haven't touched it since.

    Hi! So, I’m a complete sound-rookie and was hoping you could help me understand the real differences between XLR and 3.5mm microphones. From what I’ve been able to learn, the basic differences are: 1. XLR cables are balanced and a safer way to do long connections without having interferences; and 2. XLR mics need phantom power to work. But other than that, do XLR microphones output better sound quality compared to a good 3.5mm microphone? If the only real advance of XLR only comes with their cables… Wouldn't it be better to use a 3.5mm microphone (which tends to be more versatile, like the Rode Video NTG) and use and 3.5mm-to-XLR converter when you need to do a long connection to continue using the more trusted XLR cables?

      It's just balanced which makes interference less likely and XLR cables are more durable. To get balanced audio with this you need an expensive adapter, the RODE VXLR Pro. XLR mics tend to be also more expensive so there are many higher-end options.

    YT notifications aren’t working for me. Anyone else with the same problem?

    I get a FANTASTIC sound on my larger podcast mic Rode NT1A BUT I want to move the mic out of sight. I then tried a Rode Lavelier mic and that is a bit drop in quality (especially low frequency) than the NT1A. So I am wondering where this fits in comparison to those? I'll be placing at a distance of around 2-3 foot away in order to miss the camera.

    Great video! Beside using on top of the camera, would this works well using it via USB to make zoom calls, and listen to the participants with a headphones connected into the 3.5mm of the mic?
    Thanks in advance and sorry for my English i'm still learning
    Have a Productive and Healthy day!
