for your info. this mic also works with USB C to USB C Cable direct tor your Mobile and that is an awesome feature you don't need any 3.5m Cable. that feature no one tries but I did on my first attempt and I love that.
hands down, this was the best video on you tube to explain the NTG 2. I just wanted a clear explanation on how and what the buttons were. Everyone else, just wanted to show their faces and talk about the mic w/o showing what and how to operate the mic! Thank you!! I subscribed and turned on the alerts! Great job!!
This mic saved our film when our main interior mic, an Audio Technica AT4053B, suffered terrible RF interference on a recent shoot in NYC. The interference was so bad, it made the audio of 3 locations unusable. Our on-camera Rode VideoMic NTG did not have the same issues (better design). It produced great audio and saved our film. Huge thanks to Rode.
Glad to have finally updated from my OG Rode VideoMic that was made back in 2004. The VideoMic NTG is the best microphone I've ever used! Can't go wrong with all those features 😊
Hey Frogy, Thanks for the great review! I’m gonna use this mic as a wireless shot gun on my boom pole using the filmic pro app. What are the best settings on the app and on the mic itself to get the cleanest, cleanest audio? Thanks in advance!
Frogy! Great video man. Couple of questions. 1) Is the charging cable that is included a usb-c to usb type A? 2) Unrelated, but do you use an ND filter? If so, do you have any recommendations on ND filters? Thanks man!
Thanks Mr FrogyProd, good video, I hit the like for you I just bought the Rode VideoMic NTG today along with the Rode WS11 Dead Cat which is made specifically for the NTG from B&H, picking it up tomorrow. Going to be using it on/through my Apple Xs and Laptop, soon coming Canon M50 hopefully. The sound is just amazing to my ears. Rode build and quality can't go wrong... Sorry only found this video after I purchased it...
Thank you so much! It really is a great sounding mic. Hopefully it works really well with all your devices. I think I'm gonna need to pickup that dead cat as well!
The Rode NTG is a great mic. I have one, I've owned it for a couple of years. Recently, on a shoot it quit. I thought the mic was dead, but I replaced the cable and it came back to life.
This looks great but I’ve seen in some other videos it doesn’t work well in very loud situations. What would you recommend for someone wanting to shoot inside loud cars and workshops but capture good dialogue
Not sure about that. Haven't used it enough to know it has issues with loud sounds. It's got a knob to turn it down so i feel that's all you gotta do to avoid the issue
Great video review! I should have waited to get the NTG instead of the more expensive Rode VideoMic Pro Plus. I'm intrigued by the USB compatibility to a computer with the NTG mic, also like the stepless gain dial on the back. What I liked about the Rode Pro Plus mic at the time is the dual battery design of a built-in rechargeable lithium battery that lasts up to 100 hours, plus the ability to swap out the lithium battery and substitute for 2 AA batteries...very cool feature. I used to do wedding photography, so that feature of battery life and design gives you peace of mind to know you can get the job done without running out of juice. I can't believe you said the NTG mic has no provision for showing the battery life status, that's almost unacceptable and I consider that a significant negative. Not "life threatening" since you aren't using it for something like wedding videography, but still a negative nevertheless. I'm currently trying to buy the Blue Yeti X microphone for laptop Zoom meetings, but that mic is literally sold out everywhere. That's why the NTG mic intrigued me to be able to do double duty as a USB mic. I wish my Rode Pro Plus mic can be used as a USB mic...alas, I tried, but couldn't make it work. By the way, after seeing you use an old iPod, I liked and subbed your channel, LOL!
Yeah man gotta agree with you on that, not seeing how much battery the mics got left is a huge downside to it, but at least it lasts 30 hours and not something low like 10 hours. Just gotta remember to charge it every couple shoots. I love the fact that the Pro Plus has a huge rechargeable battery, and I almost got that mic back when it came out but was too broke. Maybe you can still somehow figure out how to get the Pro Plus to work on a computer using adapters/cables. And trust me my iPod is my favorite iOS device! Use it everyday especially cause it's got 128gb... just wish the battery wasn't so shit on it 😂
I still have the original video mic, even though it’s kinda falling apart because I needed to gaff tape it back together lol. & I also own the micro. How would you compare the new Rode NTG to the Deity D3 Pro?
I haven't tried the Deity D3 but from the sound comparisons they sound almost identical. I think if you're on a budget you can go with the Deity but the Rode does have those extra input features (I spoke about this at the end of this video)
Me too, original Video Mic here, all falling apart.. duck tape and rubber bands holding it together? What did you get finally? I am eyeing the D3 Pro my self... Thanks for any information...

Well that's the disadvantage. The extra work flow you have to go through to balance to get the audio equal on both sides. However if that's something you don't mind you might as well use the safety channel at all times
Thanks for the full fledged review. i have one small doubt. is it good to enough to record field/atmosphere sounds with rode ntg mic? plz reply. thanks in advance
Hey Frogy did you need an adaptor to use the mic with the mini tripod? If so what's it called? My mount on the mic is slightly too big to fit my tripod
Yes I do have a little adapter there. I think it's called a "Cold Shoe" adapter.. not 100% sure. The top is basically for something like a flash and the bottom has the part that would go into a tripod. The mount on the mic is indeed too big for a regular tripod
One thing I find quite irritating is that it overloads (or clips) way too easily. The max spl is too low. In fact, your mic shows the same thing when tou speak directly into it at the begiining of this video. Switching in the pad helps to an extent, but it STILL) goes over on loud sounds at the first opportunity. The Videomic Pro+ doesn’t do this at all. I could even record a rock group with that one. No way with the NTG.
It’s the microphone Frogyprod. The max spl is too low. The figure quoted on the Rode site is low compared to other mics unfortunately. There’s not a lot that can be done about it. It’s right at the capsule, although if the pad is switched in, it can help a bit. The mic isn’t designed for loud sounds, so the voice close up to it pushes it too far if you soeak loudly. Even if you turn the gain right down, it goes crunchy on loud sounds! It’s very unfortunate because it is an excellent mic, but that maximum spl is just a bit low for comfort.
You cannot get "stereo" recording over 3.5 combo jack that phones have, as it only has 4 stripes (ground, mic, left speaker, right speaker). Maybe "stereo" recording could work if you connect it with USB-c to the phone.

@@FrogyProd thanks Frogy. But the bottom of the mic is the cold shoe only..(I recently bought my mic).how do you get it on the tripod? The tripod doesnt have a cold shoe mount
Hi there! How did you mount your mic to your Manfrotto tripod ? Mine cannot be screwed because the tripod has a smaller screw than the mic red support.
I would suggest unplugging the mic and turning it off manually. Then plug it into the camera, turn the camera on and see if the microphone also turns on. Then turn the camera off and see if it turns off. It takes a while for it to automatically turn off sometimes, but the key is to have the mic turned off before you turn the camera on for the auto detect. I've also noticed it doesn't detect one of my older Canon Rebel camera's at all so it may be an issue with the camera, but I feel it should work with the a7iii. Cheers Marco from Germany! 🍻
Hey bro! I got the Rode VC1 3.5mm TRS Microphone Extension Cable for Cameras (10') ROVC1 and sometimes it works perfect other times my NTG mic powers off and makes this terrible nasty noise that completely destroys the sound. Most of the time I record while looking up at the mic to make sure it’s still on and didn’t power off due to the extension cable. Before it shuts down the noise in the video during post is extremely staticky and intolerable. I need a solution 😔
I need to know how do you have the mic connected to the man froto stand. My manfroto stand is too small and wont connect. It looks like you have something in between there, whats that ???
Yup, you'll need a hot shoe to tripod type of adapter thing. I got mine for free with things I've purchased over the years, but the closest thing I could find on amazon is something like this: amzn.to/3c1qudB
I actually haven't tested that out yet, but I don't see why you would need to do that considering the battery lasts 30 hours and you can't see how much juice it's got left. Just make sure to charge it the night before your 30 hour consecutive shoot 😁
Hey? Which extension cable should I use for my ntg to mount on my boom pole for my canon 90D? I got the rode VC1 10 inch cable but it keeps cutting out and I hear static. Which extension cable should I buy or what can I use to extend the cable?
"don't need an adapter to connect to a smartphone without an adapter!".. well.. Røde themselves say a SC7 adapter is needed to connect to android phones... :D
Hi, I recently bought the NTG, tried to boom it using the VC1 with my iPhone but it doesn't record any sound… I don't know what doesn't work, everything work fine separately… Can anyone help me ? Thanks! The Setup is this : Rode NTG - Rode SC10 - Rode VC1 - Lightning adapter - iPhone XR
That clickbaity and also very untrue video title pretty much annihilates any credibility. This mic is probably the best prosumer on camera shotgun mic at this time, but certainly not - not even close - the best mic ever.
As in the words of Joe Biden "come on man." 30 hours non replaceable battery that will eventually stop working for good. Or 100 hour replaceable AND AA option in the Mic Pro+ is sadly the deal breaker for me. NTG otherwise is great.
@@FrogyProd totally agree. but that is relvent to the amount of use daily. At some point, that internal battery will stop working and the mic is useless. the replaceabble in the Pro plus at least can be recharged and replaced. Great vid brother.
@@KevinNordstrom At some point when that internal battery dies, you will most likely get the newer/better microphone on the market any how... From all the reviews I have seen this and the D3 Pro Deity are better than the Pro + and cheaper.. The Pro + also has a weird shape in my opinion..
The mic won't turn on? Some cameras won't power it on automatically (like my canon t2i) You can turn the mic on manually by holding the power button. If that doesn't work then it's def a faulty mic and you should get it replaced! :)
Nope won't turn on, or it's on and doesn't do anything, I read somewhere this may be do to the 3.5mm cord attached bc ut has a capacitor or something. So maybe I need to buy a new trss to trs cable? I have no idea man. Not to mention, u can't download the update from their site anymore.

Could the rode dsc1 cold shoe work as a solution? Would be a 2 in 1 solution 😉
There is an adapter and I was using it in this video, it's called a "Cold Shoe with 1/4": amzn.to/30kZHsI
Thank you! This was incredibly helpful
No problem brother 👊
What adapter did you use to attach to the manfrotto?
I don't know what it's called actually but it's basically the type of adapter to attach a flash to a tripod. I need someone to tell me the name of it
While charging will it still record?
I actually haven't tested that out yet, but I don't see why you would need to do that considering the battery lasts 30 hours and you can't see how much juice it's got left. Just make sure to charge it the night before your 30 hour consecutive shoot 😁
awesome review. thank you for hitting every point without any gimmick or prolonged segments
Thanks man! No pointless vlogging here 🙅♂️
Hey? Which extension cable should I use for my ntg to mount on my boom pole for my canon 90D? I got the rode VC1 10 inch cable but it keeps cutting out and I hear static. Which extension cable should I buy or what can I use to extend the cable?
Damn wish I could help but I know nothing about extension cables. Maybe someone else has a review a bout those on youtube
2:17 Why is this distorting?
What mic you used to make this video?
The Original Rode Video Mic which came out in 2004. It's super old, my next video will be comparing the NTG to that one
what tripod are using to hold the ntg?
It's a Manfrotto Pixi Mini
Oh... Tokina!!! High Five!!
Yan Thériault LOVE that lens!!! ✋
"don't need an adapter to connect to a smartphone without an adapter!".. well.. Røde themselves say a SC7 adapter is needed to connect to android phones... :D
Really? I haven’t tested it on an android so I wouldn’t know
Great setup!
Thank you!
great review but the background music is distracting particularly the cymbal sound. better without music to be honest
Thanks for the advice and glad you enjoyed the review!
EXCELLENT PRODUCT!!
dope vid froggy
thanks brother! 🙏
I don't think the VC1 can transmit signal into a smart phone/headphone port. You may just need to use a "headphones extension" or something like that.
@@FrogyProd Thank you !
Great info!
Thanks!
Hey can anyone help me with this mix? I'm getting alot of hissing even after firmware update and lowering volume on my cannon EOS t8i
Great review mate. Pretty cool mic. ✌️
Thanks mate! It's a cool mic for sure 👌
Dude! Great video!
Thanks dude! Hope it shed enough light on this VideoMic :)
Great review.
Thanks man!!
New Frogy Video 🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏
awesome video ngl
ngl but Thank you! :)
the audio distorted for smartphone
It def sounds different in a smartphone, that's because of the phone's pre amps being the weakest
Okay, I don't know if this has changed in more recent videos, but the background drums have got to go. I'm struggling to hang on, here. Nope. Lost me.
That clickbaity and also very untrue video title pretty much annihilates any credibility. This mic is probably the best prosumer on camera shotgun mic at this time, but certainly not - not even close - the best mic ever.
As in the words of Joe Biden "come on man."
30 hours non replaceable battery that will eventually stop working for good.
Or 100 hour replaceable AND AA option in the Mic Pro+ is sadly the deal breaker for me. NTG otherwise is great.
It's a great point, although I will say, it's been a year and a half and I don't even think I've charged this thing more than twice this whole time
@@FrogyProd totally agree. but that is relvent to the amount of use daily.
Nice review!
Check mine out too (much less serious review ;P )
Thanks man! Will check yours out too!
sweet =)
It’s essentially a d3 pro clone
The type of battery it uses sucks.. So all features it has are useless.. No need to buy
Nah the battery doesn't suck. I've had this mic since January and only had to charge it once
This mic sucks, I can't even get it to turn on man, waste of time and money, cut even do a firmware update bc the website just downloads rode connect
