  • PART 8 of 10 - I've been documenting how to reupholster a wingback chair--everything from tearing it down, adding webbing, springs, and more! In this video, I show you how we finished off the arms and wings. Next up: the back and outside of the chair! I'm all out of upholstery classes now since this session has ended, so PART 9 will be all on my own! Subscribe to stay posted on the finally of this wingback chair makeover! :)
    A big THANKS to G Street Fabrics upholstery instructor for allowing me to film and document this process. I appreciate it!

    First time I ever reupholstered anything it was a love seat and I was 16. My best friend was 17 and pregnant and in her first apartment. She bought the love seat at a yard sale, it was in good shape but mustard yellow nylon loop. We had also bought chocolate brown jacquard curtains, the really heavy ones with rubber backing. They were 10 foot long and about 3 foot wide and there were 8 of them. We used those to recover that love seat and make shorter curtains for the bedroom. It turned out pretty good for two teens and a staple gun. Good thing she could sew and we knew how to break down the cushions to make patterns. My grandma taught me that.

      That's awesome, Shawn! Have you been reupholstering things since, as an adult? It's amazing how much fresher things look with new fabric.

    Still watching this series as my curiosity was piqued by the process. I've thought about refinishing/reupholstering some chairs from my grandparents (not nearly so ornate as your wing back chair)...I GIVE YOU PROPS/KUDOS FOR TAKING ON SUCH A PROJECT!!!! I'm not at the end of the process yet, but boy do I have a whole new appreciation and understand the cost and labor involved with this trade. You had an amazing, kind and generous mentor I think. As I said, I haven't finished watching, but I certainly hope you still loved the process by the end. I certain that the finished chair was spectacular and looking forward to the final reveal. (BTW, I'm commenting before watching this video because I'm so impressed with your ambition.) Thanks for sharing your journey!

    I doubt if I'd every attempt this, but I'm so invested in this project. I love seeing how things are made and all the work that goes into it. Tfs & I can't wait to see how it turns out!

      Awww, thanks, Darnia! I agree--it's fun to see the inner workings of things, especially upholstery. I've learned so much and I'm amazed at how wood and fabric and fluffy stuff go together with staples and creates cozy places to rest. :) Glad you're following along!!

    Thanks for posting this! I will be attempting a wing back chair. Mine doesn't look to have as many sections as yours. The back and wings are one continuous piece. I expect some challenges. Loved this series!

      Hey Liss! Thank you so much! If I had known it would be as detailed as it was, I almost wonder if I would have started the chair at all! LOL. I think back to when I started tearing it down and I was like, "Oh, I'll have this done in the 6 sessions before the class is over." NOPE! It has taken way longer. But, it's all part of the learning curve. The next chair won't take nearly as long, I'm sure of it! :)

      Kelsey, I had stopped working on the chair for some time because I had started carpentry classes in Jan '18 and carpentry classes fell on M, W, F. Since upholstery classes were on Wed., it conflicted with carpentry, so I had to stop the upholstery classes. Now, carpentry is on Tues evenings, so I was able to start up with upholstery again. But the 6 sessions of the course are done now! I could sign up for another round but for $299, it's a steep price to come up with that amount again and again. :)

    Yes for as much as you have spent you could have bought several new ones. That chair has great bones and would have been a shame to throw away. That chair is going to be handed down to a couple of generations. You can't buy chairs like the one you are doing because they don't make chairs of the quality you are making anymore. Be proud.

    Sometimes I really wish that I didn’t work nights so I could take cool classes again. I’d love to do something like this, but not this cause I know how much that kind of fabric and batting costs and I don’t have that. Lol

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 лет назад

      You are so right. It's EXPENSIVE. The fabric alone was like $50 per yard. NOT CHEAP, although I think I used a coupon code. The batting is expensive too, especially the bale of cotton one. But there is some left that I'll be able to use for more projects. Yeah, it's expensive indeed! And I can see why upholstering with professionals costs so much now! I had a lot of respect for the craft.
