  • BEWARE OF MARKED MONEY IN THE PHILIPPINES -BANK REFUSED TO TAKE MY MONEY
    #travel #entertainment #lifestyle
Today we went to open a bank account at Philippines National Bank. We had all the proper paperwork needed to open an account. I wanted to open a cash account and had $100 dollar bills to open the account. After the bank manager looked at my money he informed me that some of the bills were marked and the bank could not except them. Make sure to check all your bills here in the Philippines because some banks and some money changers will not except them. A NEW LESSON LEARNED.

I've been refused exchaning dollar for pesos because of the age of the bill, excessive folds, worn bills, and markings. It's pathetic that these money changers want pristine condition bills. When I get hundred bills from a US bank, I only accept pristine and current print bills, because I know I'll have problems with them in the PI. It's stupid.

When I sailed out there 20 years back, this was a problem, not only in the Philippines, but in several places in Asia. I was told the money changers stamp the money, so when they get it back they don’t need to check if it’s authentic or face. So when I ordered cash from the agent in Singapore for crew wages, I always had to state that notes had to be without stamps or writings. Once I had to send back close to US$ 20k with him to change because of writing or stamps.

But they will give you back torn/dirty/ marked up Philippines peso 1,000 notes. So after been
coming to the Phils the past 14+ years, 3 times a year, and now living here since last year, I
decided I will play the same game with them. Was in SM Dept. store in Tarlac, and i went
through all 100+ ...1,000 peso notes they were giving me, I refused over 30 of them and
made them replace them with perfect ones, process to exchange around 2,000 US took
almost 1 hour with having to write down all the serial numbers.....inspection of my money

Can feel your frustration but at least your didn't have to walk home passing hundreds of outstretched hands asking for money. I had some English money once that had some writing on it and was refused. I eventually found somewhere to exchange it but had to accept a lower exchange rate, from memory I think it was 20% less. Meet me behind the bank when it closes in two days and I'll give you a good deal." Hahahaha. Thankfully, Lot was able to successfully navigate you folks through the bank goat rope with the bill markings so that you could get your joint bank account. Like you say, one day at a time, as "it is what it is..." Godspeed.)

  • @kitty_s23456
    @kitty_s23456 2 месяца назад +1

Thanks for the vid! Island/ province life is really slower - you'll have to get used to it.
I'll also say here what I wrote in Lot's vid - don't put too much money in the ancestral house. Don't build/ improve too much on land which isn't in your (or her) name. Land disputes are common in PH, even among relatives/ family. When grandma passes, that property will be (and should be) divided among all her children - that's the law. That's if the family owns the property - sometimes it's just "rights", so check that as well.
It's better if you buy your own land (maybe buy a portion of grandma's property & have a separate title) & build a small house there. For now, make the place livable (for your immediate family) but set aside $$ for your own land. That's my take bcos I've seen & heard of many land problems in PH. Good luck & good health to you & your family. 👍

I use BPI and received some cash that was not accepted by money changers. They DID NOT give me a hard time. They took all the bills (about 12) and exchanged for new bills. So from now on I check all bills before accepting them from the bank. I guess like everything else it depends on the bank, the teller, or anyone else that thinks they are all powerful. Make friends with the bank manager. A large bottle of Fundador will go a long way making friends with the right people.

This reminds me of when I lived in Hawaii for few years. They were never in a rush to do anything. It's island life and if you are not patient you will have a hard time. I wonder how long before your place is done hopefully not too long.

You will NOT get those notes exchanged. Everyone looks for markings now. The ONLY way to get rid of those notes is to pay a contractor with them. I amost forgot to tell you, those markings will come off easily if you use acetone. Its an old trick used by cheque forgers.

Just to clarify, bills exchanged in a foreign country are sold back to financial institutions here in America. It's not a law but the prefer all bills to be uniform. They can be circulated, I.E. folds and creases, but they don't like tears or marks. I learned this back in 2017 on my first trip to the Philippines as I had about 4 hundred dollar bills that no money changer would take. Now I really closely examine all bills I take with me before I leave.

I am from Dumaguete, a few years ago I returned from Hong Kong and had surplus HK dollar notes to exchange back to Philippine peso's. I went to Western Union in the city and couldn't believe my eyes, the girl cashier had a magnifying glass looking for the most miniscule of a tear, she was sidelining most of the notes, I told her not to bother, got my money back and went to Lee Plaza Core Pacific exchange where they happily changed the currency no problem, The irony of this story, it was Western Union who changed my currency to go to HK, they provided the notes that she was refusing. I will never deal with Western Union again..
