It's unfortunate when a composer becomes essentially known as a "one piece composer". For von Flowtow it's his opera "Martha". Ironically, it's best known song is the beautiful "The last Rose of Summer", which he did not compose (it's an Irish folk song). So it's refreshing to hear another work by this composer! His piano concerto, though lightweight, has a number of original passages and treatments of the solo instrument. Post Beethoven, for several decades, many of the early Romantic era concertos by mid-level composers were lightweight -- perhaps that's what the audiences wanted! In this sense, von Flowtow provided what he thought his audience wanted. Whatever, more than "Martha" deserves to be heard!

This is quite nice and original. Shares the same sunny feeling as Hummel.

My RUclips experiences have pointed out that presuppositions about is great and interesting music have thwarted and stifled access to great and interesting music, that is until . . . RUclips. This is a wonderful work made possible for hearing by a simple upload.

There are more than 20 000 romantic and post-romantic piano concertos to discover ! You can see the list of uploads of collectionCB, collectionCB2 and collectionCB3, and of course it's only a very very little part of the "little-known" repertory :

Le second concerto de Flotow supérieur au premier, très primesautier et romantique proche de Hummel et Chopin par certains côtés est une belle découverte. Merveilleux interprètes !

This concerto should be better known. It would stop program writers from throwing accusations that may be false in the case of Mendelssohn and are certainly false in the case of Brahms. Depending on whether Mendelssohn's G-minor concerto came before this one, this concerto might or might not be the first to dispose of the extended orchestral ritornello toward the beginning of the concerto. In either case, it has four discrete movements played with breaks between them, thus beating Brahms' B-flat to the punch.

EL CONOCIMIENTO UNIVERSALISTA DE LAS GRANDES OBRAS, DEBE ESTAR SIEMPRE PRESENTE, Y ASÍ REAFIRMAR QUE LA TONALIDAD SE HA IMPUESTO PERMANENTEMENTE, SIN NEGAR LAS INVESTIGACIONES DE LA ATONALIDAD NI EL DODECAFONISMO, QUE SON VÁLIDOS AUNQUE NO LLEGUEN A AGRADAR PLENAMENTE... VEMOS ASÍ EL REGRESO DE LAS OBRAS DE AHORA A LA TONALIDAD; ES CUESTIÓN DE ESTÉTICA.-
