TILTA CAGE for the Sony FX3 with Rigging Options

- In this video, we are going to be rigging out the Sony FX3 with the newly released TILTA cage for the FX3. The awesome thing about this cage is its modularity. You are able to use the XLR audio handle the FX3 came with by removing the top plate, or you can use the Tilta top plate with Nato rails and install your own handle and microphone. The sides of the cage are also removable if you want to use it as an L-bracket or a 1/2 cage. It comes with a handstrap that I find really helpful for handheld shooting. Also, the bottom of the cage is Arca Swiss compatible, which is great for gimbals like the DJI Ronin-S and SC2.
I will do my best to list everything on here through Amazon, Tilta, and SmallRig's website so you guys have options on your rig.

Fantastic overview Ray! This is one of the best videos on our FX3 cages we've seen so far!
Thanks Tilta. I have 3 videos on the Nucleus Nano too. Let me know if you wanna collaborate with that Tilta 15mm baseplate for the FX3 cage or other components.
Titla
Excellent, info-packed video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks Ron! Tilta was the best option I saw out there currently for the FX3 (over SmallRig, Kondor Blue, 8Sinn).
@@RayValencia Yes - I have some Tilta stuff coming for it next week. Traditionally been a SmallRig fan, but their cages of late (a7SIII and FX3) have left a lot to be desired because they are flimsy on the top - their older cages for the a7RIII and -RIV are well reinforced (have a reinforcement bar that comes across the front of the camera body and attaches the top piece to the bottom) and have NO bend in the top piece. The smallrig a7SIII and fx3 cages have very little metal and no other reinforcement, and as such, when you attach top handles to them and have any amount of weight around the cage, they flex way too much. I like the idea of the close fitting modular cage design of the tilta to maintain the compact "squared" form-factor of the FX3.
@@MOMENTSbyRonSonedecker Yes, I love my SmallRig cage for the a7R3, especially that super smooth ergonomic grip. Doesn't feel like a cage is on it. They make them slick and flush with the curve of the body. But I felt like I would need to order both of their FX3 cages to match up to the TILTA. The Kondor Blue has a removable top too, but it looks like it would be painful on your Grip because it has a squared-off Nato Rail in your right palm. The 8sinn was my 2nd Pick overall, one solid piece of metal, but I emailed them about not having the HDMI clamp months ago. They said they were working on it, but I waited for weeks.
Thanks for this very helpful video. I am still trying to come up with th eperfect rig for my needs/style, and this video has helped me greatly.
Great job Ray, detailed and useful
Thanks 👍
Super useful video as usuel ! Keep giving us new fx3 accessories content.
Thanks. You got it! Working on some more currently.
Great video - thanks for putting it together. Cheers
Thanks for taking the time to watch it and leave me a comment!
Great review mate. Now if only I could order one 😩.
I noticed you use the rode wireless go, do you ever get any electrical buzzing coming through the fx3 when it’s plugged in and on?
Thanks Steve. I haven't had any issues with the Wireless Go. I'm currently editing a new video explaining everything with the XLR Audio Handle. Including using a Mixer, condenser mics, lavs, Rode Mics, and 2 Wireless Gos at the same time. It should offer some insight.
@@RayValencia great! Thanks for the reply mate, looking forward to it!
Great video. What is the Sony microphone ?
Can you use the Tilta side handle focus on this cage?
Any particular xlr to 3.5mm adapter you would recommend to get two rode wireless go’s on one handle? Or does any adapter work?
I use the Rode VXLR adapter but I'm sure others are compatible too!
Thanks Ray, some great options. I feel SmallRig and Tilta are always playing 'leapfrog' to the end consumer's benefit with ever greater choices. I believe this Tilta cage blocks the front tally light? SmallRig now have a new FX3 kit which is pretty similar. It ships with a HDMI clamp and great extension to the Sony XLR handle as well as having a removable top plate when XLR handle isn't needed.
I'm new to all this rigging but find the further down the 'rabbit hole' you go the complex the rigging choices, options and respective compromises increase geometrically. I'm starting to find I have a cupboard of multiple grips, clamps, rods, brackets interfaces etc etc some of which need a degree of DIY 'bastardisation' to work 'just right' for you.
Thanks, Ricky. I totally agree. I like the modularity of this cage and the handstrap actually became a favorite feature, lol. Yes, it blocks the front tally...but guess what?
Just to make things more complicated, a few hours ago, I just got a marketing email from Tilta for pre-orders on their new VERSION 2 cage for the FX3/FX30. Which is crazy (leapfrogged again! Lol), but I've had my Tilta cage for over 2 years, and now they are offering new accessories and support for this camera body. And Sony keeps releasing big firmware upgrades that have made operating the camera so much better than when I first got my FX3 [pre-ordered model, Version1]. It's a great situation to be in!! So much support over the years.
Which Filter do you use for the Sony 28-135mm Lens? The Tiffen Black Pro Mist only goes up to size 82mm and the Cine Lens is 95mm, Im looking for a great 95mm Filter to give a cinematic look! Thanks Great video!!
Hey. I use a Matte Box when I need that large of a Filter. I just ordered the new Tilta Mirage Matte Box with a Motorized Variable ND, which comes as 95mm. It should arrive in 1-2 weeks and I'll make a video for it.
I would love if they sold that top plate on it's own. Great video.
Love that top plate!
Hi! Thank you for this review. One thing's been bothering me for a while. How durable are the top 1/4 inch threads on the camera body in your opinion? When you mount a nato rail and a handle there, can you hold a heavy rig without any play or wiggle?
Hey. The 1/4 20 mounts in the top of the camera are built into the magnesium alloy body of the camera with reinforcement. I always mount the Tilta cage Nato Top plate on the camera and lug it around with a Nato clamp handle on a heavy rig with a matte box, baseplate, rails, heavy lens, etc and never have any issues. The XLR handle has some plastic flex to it though so I don't use that handle unless I need Manual Audio controls.
@@RayValencia thanks a lot mate 😊
Great review debating between the Tilta and Kondor Blue FX3 cage.. would be great to see a comparison video since they aren't any out there! Now that you own the Tilta would you still go with that one or the kondor blue cage?
Hey Merrell! If I was do it all over again, I would still go with the Tilta. The Kondor Blue has a Nato Rail in the palm of right hand. I like the grip on this one better plus it has the Handstrap, which I never knew I would love so much plus this cage is super modular, 3 pieces. I plan on getting the Tilta 15mm rod quick release Base for this cage too.
Does that bottom of the cage fit into the space on the plate that comes with the RS2? Do you know? Cuz the one you use in the video is the ronin s
Yes, it is compatible with the RS2.
Hey Ray! Good job man. Quick question, do you have sound issues when you recording with a shotgun because your atomos is close to him and we know the fan can be pretty loud.
Yes, I eventually had that issue with the fan noise. I have changed my setup several times since then. I just received a new monitor mount rigging solution...once I get it opened up and rigged out, I'll post a video on it. Although, I did get the FX3 Handle Extension too: ruclips.net/video/xGLVYgPWTBo/видео.html
I'm curious to know how you mounted that monitor to your gimbal? I searched small rig and couldn't find any attachments that wrapped around like that. I also searched your description and didn't see anything, care to share what piece(s) that is?
Hey Frank. Sorry, I used to include the links for the accessory ring on my older videos about the Tilta Nucleus Nano on the Ronin-S. Here ya go! amzn.to/39gWjhq
Can you link the quick release plate you use too? Great stuff!
Hey Shane! I have already upgraded my QR quick release plate. This one fits Manfrotto Tripods, and the Ronin, and has Arca Swiss: ruclips.net/video/sYg4hrgzP5s/видео.html
This Tilta rig for FX3 looks so good, I've been using the Smallrig so far, but I think I might pull a trigger on this :) What's your best way to mount a monitor on top of the XLR handle? I use the magic arm the same as you do here I see, but it gets it really tall 😅 Did you get any other ideas? I keep thinking about how to improve this 😊
Thanks Mariusz! I've added lots of pieces since this video was published. I have the SmallRig Handle Extension now too. Here's my video on that: ruclips.net/video/xGLVYgPWTBo/видео.html
I just got an awesome new monitor mount from SmallRig too that I need to make a video for. I'll try to shoot it this week or the next if I can. I'm working on bits and pieces of a bunch of gear videos right now, so I'll ty to get yo your question in a video very soon!!
Smallrig monitor mounts as re the business
Great video! I have one question, I read that Tilta HDMI clamp doesn't work with all the hdmi cables because of it's size. I use the Smallrig HDMI cable, do you know if this cable work with it?
Yes, I only use the SmallRig cables because they are one of the only cables that fit in that clamp perfectly
@@RayValencia Thank you! I was hesitant to buy the clamp because everyone I saw was using it with Kondor Blue HDMI cables and I didn't know if the Smallrig would fit. Thanks for the help!
@anilyolsal Kondor Blue has the same size compatible HDMI port. I have one of their Coiled Cables, but it's too short for where I like to keep my monitor. I have several FX3 Build/Rig videos. Check this video out for more details: ruclips.net/video/CNf6uJ0IZo0/видео.htmlsi=fNkzofPMEIoBx3b4
I have a more recent video with a better V-Mount battery plate too.
@@RayValencia Thank you! I will check it out!
I’m confused, with the cage bolted on why would you need an additional plate to mount to an RS2?
Ah, simple. I don't have a RS2. I have a Ronin-S
Would this would the same with the A7siii or are the screws in the wrong spots?
No, a7S3 does not have any screw holes in the body like this camera.
Good camera cage but it blocks the tally light in the front...
For all you out there, looking for some more space and length on your FX3 "audio handle"... search for this : "Kondor blue Sony FX3 XLR Handle Extension".
You may well like it, it's the kind of tiny bit with lots of good ideas in a very small package. Smalrig has one too, but I don't know its pros and cons.
I have a video all about the SmallRig Handle Extension right here brother. The black matches a little better than the Gray Kondor Blue!

Hi! please can you give me the exact model of the smallrig arca swiss adapter you are using
for the rs2? thanks!!
Hey Diego. I found an Arca Quick release plate for the RS2 much better than that adapter! Check out this new AndyCine Ronin Plate: ruclips.net/video/sYg4hrgzP5s/видео.html
Of that doesn't work out for you check out that adapter: Smallrig part #DBC2506
@@RayValencia what about the one that came with the RS2 kit? Why that dont work? Thanks!!
@@diegopalma5123 Ohh, I had to make one because I don't have the RS2. I have the original Ronin-S. Although, I'm considering the RSC2 for a lighter option gimbal. How do you like RS2?
@@RayValencia just came today! My first gimbal so learning a bit here! Thanks!!
@@diegopalma5123 Dude, no prob and congrats! Your FIRST gimbal is the best of the best. My first gimbal was a Glidecam, where you would balance your camera on a metal pole with weights that balance on the bottom. Haha
Good review. Just don’t like the cage at the bottom. It should follow the grip of the handle.
Yeah, agreed. I like the smooth ergonomic cage grips better, but this one checks the rest of the boxes for me.
Brother can you do big films on Sony fx3
I do tons of commercial work and some documentary work on the FX3 including shoots for Amazon, CBS, HSN, QVC, and more.
✌
The holes are mounting the cage, while sony said it had a cageless design XD
Good overall intro to the Tilta Cage. However, it is pretty obvious with all that rigging on top of the handle how awkward it is to hold the handle watching you try to do that but it is not working. The long shotgun does not work well for this rig (Rode has short shotguns and so does Sanken) and neither does the Sony 28-135mm which is far too heavy and bulky for the FX3. Not a great set up although that lens is great and better suited to a shoulder-mounted rig. For lightweight and nimble Sony's 24-105 F4 can't be beaten although you might want to go with the slightly more weighty Sony 24-70mm 2.8 for its premium images and extra stop. I digress. I understand there are also issues using the Atomos HDMI cable with the Tilta HDMI clamp not fitting. See comments on B & H. The hand strap is great, too bad Small Rig does not offer something similar. I think Small Rig's offerings have the Tilta cage beat. Shapes FX3 wooden handle with the strap and rosette would work well with the Small Rig full cage and a quick-release rosette accessory on that cage. The Small Rig HDMI lock is perfect. Don't buy the Shape one, it blocks the other door ports.
Hi SquareDeal! Yes, this was the first iteration of my FX3 rig. You should check out my newer videos, I got the FX3 almost a year ago. My "Moman Power99 V-Mount FX3 Cine Rig" video solves all these issues. Or my latest "Tilta Mirage Matte Box" video you can see how my Shoulder Rig is built up now. And I also got the FX3 handle extension in another video. I also have an awesome new SmallRig Viewfinder/monitor holder that I really need to make a video for because it's revolutionary!! Please check out those videos if you can and reach out to me again! I'd love to catch up soon and get your thoughts.
@@RayValencia Will check out the updated versions. Thanks for letting me know. Always interested in rig innovations!
the cage looks great, i actually dislike the handle it has though looks ugly and for me i shoot vertical videos for brands so it would get in the way with the tripod. If i buy it ill probably cut the handle off with scissors lol. Any who great video i was about to buy the Kondor but i like this one better.
Hi Ray! Kickass name. Yeah, this cage is great due to it's modularity. By handle, you're referring to the right hand strap? I never knew how much I would love having a hand strap until letting the camera dangle from my fingers in between shooting. I shoot vertical sometimes too, but I still leave the leather strap on it (because it's too time consuming to put it back on). A quick release wrist strap would be better, but you can definitely still mount on the tripod plate vertically with the wrist strap on it.
@@RayValencia yeah i bought it but it still dangled from one end so i just cut it off lol
It’s a half cage. Yuk. On the other hand , it screws into both sides which is good. The small rig cage only bottom and 1 side.
instead of that tilta screwdriver, they could have given you an 1 euro coin, and call it a discount
so much detoiuurs. my mind is reeling
Slow down the playback speed 😅
Really!?!?!? Stop that! Lol!!! A handle w a monitor mount will be absolutely perfect. No need for that monstrosity
