For an artist who had a rather endearing trust in a stock standard production model (CBS!) of his day, there is some huge irony here.
The thing is; The way he used it obviously made it not so standard. So if you wanna mimick Jimi, you can't just go with a regular Strat and what have you. - And I wonder, if he eventually would've gotten into business with Fender and gotten his own guitar made, what that would've been. It would've happened... There's no way around that.
if you REALLY want to channel jimi you just buy a lefty and string it righty... lol so yes you do just get a regular standard strat in lefty lol...
Michael Angelo H. I'm pretty sure the black widow he used right before he died was made to his specs
I kinda get what you mean. It was a different time back then. They just took whatever was available and what sounded good. (And for Jimi's needs a Strat was the right tool available.) Only today we are obsessed with getting the perfect gear that can nail a specific sound. It's a great time to be a guitar player but also a bit of a shame. A lot of folks don't really create their own sounds anymore, it's just copying what is considered to be "great tone".
Holy crap; I'd never seen that guitar before. - Or maybe... Guess, there's not a lot on record of it then.
Fender: "How can we celebrate one of the greatest left handed guitarists of all time? I know, we'll produce a really nice signature model AND ONLY DO RIGHT HANDED VERSIONS OF IT."
In America “greed is good” Michael Douglas “Wall Street”
I'm planning to buy a left handed strat and flip the strings for fun😁
I will never understand why so many people find satisfaction in disrespecting other musicians. The constant criticism of Rob's playing is not only unmerited, it is completely asinine. Rob and Lee are fantastic players and deserve the utmost respect from all of us. Since I began watching them many years ago, I have learned so many valuable lessons from Rob and Lee which I use in my own playing. I credit them for where I am nowadays as a guitarist for their uplifting and inspiring attitudes when it comes to the guitar.
Real musicians do not lambaste one another. We encourage one another as we embark on this musical six-string journey together.
The criticism is that Rob makes a Strat sound like a nothing-like-a-Strat, which is educational in that it shows the versatility of a Strat, but irritating when demoing an instrument designed to recreate the sound of a specific artist!
Or the fact that everything he plays is the exact same which is outdated dad rock
First time I hear Lee and Rob mentioning Philip Sayce in their videos, This guy definitely deserves more recognition!
Buy a lefthand strat and change the strings if ye wanna be like Jimi. Maybe they can make more guitars for us leftys that way..
Why dont they do that...so much more authentic for the righty anyway!
_"Buy a lefthand strat...blah, blah, blah... "_
Same dumb-ass argument I've heard many times before. And suffer the playing discomfort such a mod brings? No f*cking way. The Hendrix-type Strat is the way to go.
TOPS :D
I bought a left handed MIJ Strat and flipped the nut around and I think its awesome
@@electrix6751 You have to be kidding, right? If you don't want the "discomfort" then just play a righthanded guitar, fact remains that the hendrix modded strat mostly just looks like a strat with the scratch plate wrong way up. The jack input is on the correct side, the logo is the correct way up, which ultimately just doesn't look authentic at all. And yes, authenticity is important here as you're copying a well known guitar from a well known guitarist.
Possibly Rob was the wrong player to demo this guitar?
steve1969pierce My thoughts exactly. Anything even remotely psychedelic would have been greatly appreciated in regards to showcasing this guitar.
Hey, here is something that you will never see or hear: A Rob Chapman Solo that doesnt begin with a full bend.
abwarts - On the 14th fret, B string.
Don’t see the point in slating robs playing.
That's such a stupid thing to say, there's nothing you aren't allowed to play on a guitar. If the demo was meant to sound like Hendrix then it would have. It was supposed to be a brief example of the sounds you can get in the context of a jam.
Mark Seymour the thing is that Rob's soloing always comes down to a certain pattern. You will notice it when you watch a fair amount of his demos.
I am not saying that he is a bad player or isn't entitled to play what he want, but his demos became so stale.
Have you ever checked out Pete's playing in gear demos? This guy knows his way around all different type of playing styles and always tries to play according to the gear he is demoing.
@Mark Seymour He didn't even in the intro. Even if he had, yes it would have demonstrated fine. If you buy a guitar off of the internet without playing it yourself first and use just a video as a demo thats not the greatest idea anyway.
I'm sorry guys, but Rob killed that Strat with gain and shred stuff... you can barely make out it's a Strat not to mention Hendrix Strat.
I just can't take this gain filled shred on every single guitar...
Pete and Lee should have done this.
Right
Lee and Rob are completely different players with different styles. That's why it's better that they do these kind of videos. We get to see both ends of the spectrum regarding tone and playablity. Also, at some live performances, Hendrix had tons of gain, too.
Bloody hell, how many lessons has Lee had?
He has gotten really good with his timing and note selection. I enjoy his playing over Rob's these days.
damn that end solo was great from him
Yeah, super impressed with that end Solo, Captain! Seriously good stuff, keep it up.
Woo Lee! Old dog learning some new tricks!
Lesson, or practices?
Almost all the greats are on YT, but not Jimmy. It's a crying shame the Hendrix estate is such a bloodsucking institution. Far more youngsters (and old codgers) would be keeping the legacy alive if they didn't try to bleed his memory for every penny.
Severinate Was about to write the same thing
Word
I heard a rumor that Janie Hendrix was out as head of Experience Hendrix... I don't know how true that is because I can't find anything to back that up....
I find it ironic that Jimi would go play after hours jams for NOTHING but his estate milks every penny from our pockets. I know his dad got screwed for decades and they're making up for lost ground but I truly believe Jimi would be disgusted. How much is enough????????
I think Jimi got screwed by the industry pretty badly during his short career. I've seen stories that he was very upset with his management at the time of his death. Am guessing the family is just getting it back however misdirected their actions may be.
-Showcases "Hendrix" strats
-fails to display any tones or techniques reminiscent of Jimi in jams
If you're talking about string gauge it's important to know that the set he used was a standard Fender set. It was called "Fender Rock n' Roll Spanish Guitar Extra Light 150" it appeared in their catalog from 1953 to 1979. I couldn't agree more the decal should have been placed upside down. Mr Chapman is correct
its real cool to see the progression of lee getting better and better through these vids not that he was ever bad or anything its just cool to see the progression
with all do respect, Rob should change up his playing style to fit the vibe of the product,,, the opening jam just doesn't fit
Totally wrong music to play with this model
I am glad to see I wasn't the only one to think that. That is more of an ode to satriani style than Hendrix .
We have reached the age of captain lee andertons playing better then chappers :O
I think this is the first time Rob dialed back and Lee just coming into his own first soulful jam with this duo from America in UK fashion cheers bloody fantastic!
For the price of one of these you could buy at least two regular left handed Fender strats and flip them. And have a ton of change so you can go mental on weed, LSD and speed. Which would be so much more authentic.
I believe Hendrix's string gauge was 10-38. It was a custom with a .010 to start and the 3rd string was a .015.
"If Jimi lived to be 70 he would have done a bad album at some point." Interesting point but I'd argue that they already released a lot of "bad" stuff right after his death. And I don't mean that it is bad music or bad playing, just "bad" choices and bad quality. They released a lot of snippets and unfinished stuff. Jimi was quite a perfectionist and he would probably not have approved that.
The Wildwood video does a better job of displaying it's strattiness. Rob can play, but always makes every guitar sound of the same. I'd like Pete and Mick do do this.
Rob makes everything sound like Rob - metal scale crap - Which I am also done with. Deal with the guitar Rob, not you. Do a vid about you and get it over with already and move on..
That is so true, clicked this vid but i already knew the outcome, so i’m elsewere after typing this
Lewis Conger yep I would say the very same thing. That said I can not play anywhere near to Robs level. I guess I just love how Pete plays.
While I do not dispute that Rob is a extremely astute and technical guitar player, I do not think what he played was to the point of show casing JH Strats; and his tone, on this video was totally off...
Couldn't agree more, Rob is a great player, but with his chops and all that gain every guitar sounds the same...so it misses the point completely...
Why all the hate towards rob? Great guitarist, does his thing and we like it. Go and watch GAK videos instead if you're gonna complain
Lee’s ending solo was one of his best, certainly better than I could do.
Jimi Hendrix was so naturally born talented that I believe that he could pick up a guitar [Out Of Tune] and STILL know where to play the notes to make it sound cool without even tuning IT👨🏼🎤👩🏻🎤🎸🎶🎵🎶🔊📣
He was so good he could play a guitar without strings and make it sound good 🤣
Well played Lee. Fantastic sounding rigs. Thank you
“Yes there’s a bag of weed” hahaha that caught even the chappers off guard
Beautiful intro Chappers! I appreciate your variety of playing.
what happened to guitar paradiso?
VERY GOOD QUESTION!
Yeah...it started out as the high end stuff, with Mick supplying the history and specs, and Pete talking about the look and the feel...was a great combination and they always did the best gear. Mick and Pete were a great combo and balanced each other out nicely. Since Mick doesn't have much time these days it needs to be Lee and Pete doing it.
Nathan Brown - ?? Might want to increase your font size Nathan
Good Lord that run at the end by Lee with the fiddley bits was the most OP thing I've seen in a series of whiles.
Lee’s playing is absolutely mint in this video, that jam at the end..... damn!
Man, intro....burning it up boys!
Hendrix strat, tapping and metal scales 😫
Metal scales? So pentatonic and the basic minor scale? Are you thick?
Hmm should´ve used Pete for this one, Chappers and strats don´t go together...
Not sure about how Hendrixy the opening jam was but no complaints as it’s definitely one of the best on this channel please make this into a backing track or get Pete/Lee to do a short video on it
I met Hendrix in a pub in Salisbury in 1983. He was thinking about making a move back to the limelight, but had real back problems from having spent 8yrs travelling the world, harvesting courgette flowers. He was really excited about Yamaha's move into FM synthesis, but was looking to secure his money in a little smallholding in Tiverton. He was into his wildlife, I think he'd already invested in the company that did Hedgehog flavoured crisps.
Nice guy.
This is the first time i liked lee's playing over Robs. (But boi does Rob know how to shred)
A Strat with 10's tuned in Eb is the way to roll. Plenty slinky + gobs of tone.
Literally laughed out loud at “it’s a bag of weed!” Haha. Well done.
Please bring back Pete. No more Chappers making strats sound like generic shred machines.
Chappers made this channel what it is, if you think he makes it sound like a generic shred machine I guess your ears need to mature as he's just ripping blues links as jimi would have done
Well Captain you have become a mega guitarist...... just goes to prove you don’t need to shred to impress.... nice feel, perfect choice of notes and a slammin tone 👍👍 Nice one.... enjoyed that
I like the authenticity - frankly, I don't care much for the sound. If you want to be just like Hendrix, get it. If you want to play and sound like Hendrix, learn his style and use a regular strat with the right amp settings
why wouldnt you just get a normal strat and restring it upside down...cannot get closer to the 'real thing' than that... ;)
the way yall going in the begging of the video is so amazing
Those Rut Busters are really working for the Captain. That mother is just going with reckless abandon now & it's awesome!
Chapman sounded amazing. Thank you Chappers!
Best captain ever sounded x
Can you do a sound comparison between the $899.00 Hendrix Strat and the new Custom Shop Strat priced at 5 times more. I wonder is it really worth paying that much more for this new Strat. I have the MIM one and I love the way it plays and the way it sounds. This One sounds fantastic but the price...Not so much. Great Video BTW
Holly crap lee is sounding wicked.
I am reminded of a story about Stevie Ray Vaughan. His brother, Jimmie Vaughan had a copy of Voodo Child on LP and Stevie was so amazed by the guitar playing he played the record over and over until the record was worn out and Jimmie being sick of the sounds came in and smashed the record. Stevie, not to be outdone, went to the store and bought another copy of the record. You can just imagine Jimmie's joy at this.
The SRV Strat still comes with the more authentic tremelo. Which was his nod to Hendrix. But it doesnt come on the Hendrix Strat............
Whammy bar sticking out the top of the bridge isn't everyone's cup of tea. I know I wouldn't want one just because it would be in the way of my palm muting.
@@evanward4303 I agree, but if it came with the reverse tremelo and Hendrix style bent arm it would at least be something unique and make you approach things differently.
Vintage two point trems for life
For diehard Hendrix fans, this is pretty cool piece. Only qualm is, I think they could've pimped out the case a little bit more, with artwork or a signature outside, or something stitched inside. #nitpicking
It's nothing like a Hendrix guitar so you wouldn't be a die hard fan and want this.
I think $4,000 for this guitar is highway robbery and I don't care HOW it plays. Nothing about it screams "Hendrix" to me. The Silver Sky seems like it could sound more like Hendrix than this trainwreck could. That's just my own personal opinion though. I think you can make ANY Strat sound Hendrixy if you want to.
Save yourself £000's and buy a stock LH Strat, flip it over and re-string it - job done. You can't get more authentic than that...
we saw it rob well done
Nice strats
I think the Captain should buy one of these... the end solo was f***in AWESOME
Chapters playing rather tasty Hendrix-esque licks, nice!
The beginning tune sucked, but Rob’s playing after the guitar description was good for a few seconds...didn’t like the end jam though
You definitely kill this signature with demo
Back in't day Piccato Strings could be bought singly so you could make your own custom gauge sets, not sure if Jimi used these but that was a way to do it.
Lets play Metal on a Hendrix Strat - So versatile lol
As these are "Custom shop" guitars, can't you custom order them with whatever colour you want, upside down / right side up logo, or whatever? or does that cost several more thousand pounds?
Greg Koch review of this guitar over at Wildwood says it all and he’s shit hot at the Hendrix thing.....
Yep
ruclips.net/video/hdqmxDfAPv4/видео.html
Cartoon Buddy Guy as Jimi's Tech at 7:11? Hilarious reference. For those that don't know, Jimi was a huge fan of Buddy Guy's playing. Buddy is 82 and still touring. He even had a new album release this year. Jimi is supposed to have said, "Heaven is lying at Buddy Guy's feet while listening to him play guitar." I can't find a solid source for the quote but there definitely is bootleg footage on RUclips where you can see Jimi at the foot of the stage intently watching Buddy play live. I recommend everyone go and see him.
The whole question about why Jimi used the strings he did is pretty well laid out, as Rob says, by Jimi's tech. Don't understand why Lee feels the need to question all that at this point. Rob is absolutely right on that one.
Rob
You may remember, I contacted you a while back about the Jimi Hendrix autograph, my front row ticket and images I collected in person at a 1968 show. I've been included in the upcoming Richard Houghton book "Jimi Hendrix- The day I was there" with my recollections. There is still a way for you to have this small bit of Hendrix history.
Love the Hendrix homage you guys did. I've been looking at your ML-1 and I think it is a nice piece of kit. I still dust off my Rick 360 and push the neighbors over the edge with my old Vox.
Cheers Mate, love you vids and vision for music
jagjet aka Robert Phelps
I honestly think Pete and Rabea are a better duo for blues/blues rock stuff. Nothing against rob, but he's more of a metal/hard rock player and seems to have difficulty playing other styles.
I suppose I understand why someone would categorize Hendrix as a blues player. But that really doesn't do justice to the kind of player he actually was. And I bet Rabea is having a good laugh considering that he's the one who plays metal nearly exclusively (the new Toska is awesome - and it ain't blues!).
@thejacobshapiro = Bollocks 😂🤓
Nathan Montover watch the demos on his channel. He’s a monster blues rock player.
definitely,, I would prefer to see more of Pete and Rabea on this sort of thing. Rob is great for metal, hard rock,,, kempers, high gain etc etc.
Become a one trick pony
Rob, you took your beard game to a whole new level.
Shame he shaved it
Lee has gotten sooooooo much better.
the cap tearing it up, u are becoming my favorite guitar player caps!!!!
I "build" same type of Jimi Fender to myself using american special body with it's electronics and 2015 Mexico Fender Hendrix sig model reverse neck. Pickups i put Fender custom shop 69 set like these have, but i put bridge pickup like it is in normal strat to get more body to it and middle/neck like they are on Hendrix strat. My guitar sounds just like these and looks too tho bridge sounds and feels better, not as spikey.
Beautiful playing by the captain in this one!!
Sorry guys, but the jam in the beginning... sounds like you were playing a different song! Or may maybe Chappers was out of tune in spirit of Hendrix.
yea sorry but that was awful....that stupid tapping crap is so cliche - I am about done with that and the whole thing sounded characture - ish
Yep your right thats what I call ....A MESS
I dont know what Hendrix you listen to. No...didagree...
lol i thought it was awesome, handrix or not:P
At least we know they ARe humans
Captains end jam was on point
Tasty licks captain! Sounds great!
Jimi is the reason I’m a right handed guitarist with a left handed Strat.
C'mon it's a Jimi Hendrix strat Rob! Jeezus!
Whether you like the models or not, you gotta give props to them for making an upside down headstock to ensure the resemblance of Hendrix playing aright handed strat left handed! Great video!
That bit at the beginning wasn't very stratty/ jimi from chappers. That bit about 2/3 through though. Oooooo yeah
AWESOME jam-out guys!
Captain totally face melting at the end! Oosh!
I hear Jimi Hendrix’s skills were reasonably well developed.
that ending jam... daaamn captain, that lessos've paid off, so coherent
What an intro!!!!
Great playing again by Rob and Lee. Laughing at the bitter commenters here complaining that Rob is playing in his own style. Isn't that what we're all supposed to be doing? Are we supposed to automatically play in the style of the person that the signature model is named after?? Grow up, guys.
just give the guitar to Pete already
Loved the short jam at the very end.
As a lefty I'm inspired. I think Rob gets a bad rap for his shredding abilities. He's obviously well versed in technicality. But that's why Lee has obviously been jamming lately and gives us a balance. Best of both worlds no? Stop hating! I'll dub this the Jimi jam.
I really want a Hendrix strat! There are two on my local music store, the Monterrey strat, which I really want, and the white, Mexican one with the inverted headstock. I wonder if they would take my sax while I gather the money to buy them.
That last solo was amazing: It sounded very bold and ballsy, congrats Mr. Anderton :D
I watched several videos on this guitar but wow no one else made that guitar sound like you guys did! Nice I think I'm ordering one first guitar
M
the logo is the right way up.. anyone else noticed that the body also is the right way up? xD
In other words it's nothing like a Hendrix guitar.
Jimi was a WRITER first, then a guitar player. His guitar playing was so unique that guitar players completely overlook this. Jimi played stock Strats he pulled off the wall at Manny's and other places. His tech guy got them playable to Jimi's liking, but they were regularly priced, not expensive CBS stock guitars. Give me a break with these ridiculous $3000 "Jimi" Strats.
Reverse slant bridge pickup is the key to the sound i guess
Wow Lee is showing massive progress.
Damn Lee is really getting his Hendrix on!!
I kinda find chapman's playing annoying....
The captain makes up for it though! Keep it up!
Nice shout out to the Broadcast FTW just picked one up! I'm not sure about the flipped bridge pickup but the relic'd one looks really sharp!
I have the $800 MIM reissue while it's not a custom shop its great guitar for the price.
Would love to see a comparison of cabs and speakers (better yet blindfold challenge). In my opinion one of the most overlooked things in the RUclips guitar community
Loved Lee‘s playing here! :D
I don't get the hendrix range, he didn't use a reverse headstock or bridge pickup, he used a normal strat upside down
...and this guitar replicates that without having tone and volume knobs digging into your forearm and with more upper fret access.
@@kitoyobeni1 if you're going to pay thousands for a custom ahp better go fully authentic
I would never pay thousands for this guitar. I would sooner buy the Mexican version and the Duncan Jimi loaded pickguard. There isn't an "authentic" Jimi guitar, this is a tribute model. An authentic wouldn't be left handed either; it would just be a period right handed strat, which would be missing the point entirely.
If I were to buy a custom shop, it would truly be custom to my own requirements, not an unnecessarily expensive version of a standard model.
"Oh look, a bag of weed!"
Dead.
at 11:53 and on lee don't even say wow rob what and awesome review of the tones lol
