Is marijuana bad for your brain? - Anees Bahji

- Explore how marijuana’s two main active compounds, THC and CBD, affect your brain and body, and what risk factors to watch out for.
--
In 1970, marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 drug in the United States: the strictest designation possible, meaning it was completely illegal and had no recognized medical uses. Today, marijuana’s therapeutic benefits are widely acknowledged, but a growing recognition for its medical value doesn’t answer the question: is recreational marijuana use bad for your brain? Anees Bahji investigates.

I think the important thing to remember is that with weed your personal experience isn't the only experience, I've seen plenty talking about how weed makes them feel so much better while others say it was the worst thing they ever did. Because of how weed affects everyone differently you have to remember that both experiences are just as valid. If your gonna try weed start small and remember that each person is gonna have a different experience.
yeah we are already at different brain chemistry levels, or might even be on scripts
I must slightly disagree with the original post.
From my experience, the ultra majority of people who have had "bad experiences" just weren't educated enough on what cannabis does. Cannabis aims to expand your mind, and it does so by elevating your vibration, which physicaly translate into oxygenating your cells more, which it does by making your heart pump more.
People who are not aware of that will freak out instead of feeling safe. And since cannabis can increase focus, they will focus on their fear, thinking something bad is happening.
So, it not not linked with genetics or individual chemistry in the vast majority of cases.
That being said, of course that some pre-existing psychological conditions can cause problems. But 98% of the "bad trips" experience I've heard were just what I explained.
Like booze only much more extreme.

How to discuss marijuana in a very formal and informative manner. Thanks Ted ed for facts not myth.
Funny thing is is that they've done videos on myths before lol
N S.C what am I missing? It doesn’t seem informative to me. To start a video with a misleading point suggesting that it became illegal in the ‘70s. Ironically, that’s about the time the U.S. government allowed one man to grow pot for medical research. Unfortunately, he lived in Alabama... so, the results were underwhelming. There was also research dating back to the ‘70s in several French universities that the U.S. “likely” put the kibosh on.
Sorry if I sound nagging, I just didn’t find this video compelling or informative

Marijuana gave me severe OCD and higher levels of generalized anxiety a decade ago. It ruined my life even more to the max.
thx dude appreciate on the vids - good staff
I've smoked weed since I was a kid. When I first began to consume marijuana, I was instantly hooked and 12 years later I still do smoke. During adolescence stages, I found myself irrational, emotional, lots of ups and downs. It was due to the fact that I was a very young man I didn't know anything about anything... I wasn't mindful or consciously alert. I'd highly recommend for people to wait until they are a little older and stable before the smoke. It's more enjoyable when you understand what you're doing in depth whereas before you were a blind young guy/girl just trying to solve the puzzle. It's almost like being a connoisseur of Wines, the more you understand the more enjoyment you'll get from receiving something of high quality. There's nothing wrong with smoking, just don't let it consume you and have your life revolve around ADDICTION. Set a schedule do your day routine and the last hour or two before bed just take a small puff or two and enjoy those moments. Use it as a self rewarding mechanism not an addictive pleasure that you constantly need to have. If you don't or can't discipline yourself INSIDE AND OUT, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DONT SMOKE OR DRINK.
I've always been curious with people's relationship with weed.
You got it down to a T. I started smoking when I was 12 in middle school which went on in my high school years. It's weird for me because I had smoked frequently for 4 years at that time then in 11th grade I stopped because I noticed my grades going down. It wasn't that hard to stop really. Only noticeable effects for me were mood swings but besides that not bad. I made a promise (kinda lame) that I would start smoking again after I graduate that's if I still wanna do it. 2 years pass I'm 18 and i don't feel like smoking and decide not to smoke for like another 2 or 3 years until like 2020 I started again. Now I smoke everyday after work, full time job, tough work, 5am everyday. Routine is important. I almost have a set time for it and time my day accordingly. After work I get high around 6 that way I sober up by around 9 then pass out at 11. For me, my relationship with weed besides getting high, it's obviously relaxing, feels good and everything. But me it's like you said I'm a connoisseur I love the process and action leading up to the smoke aswell as the smoking experience. The look smell and taste of the buds man it's awesome. I feel like in order to partake its best when you have have a certain mindset and knowledge about your self like I don't have addictive tendencies. I Don't drink alcohol really at all don't even drink coffee no cigarettes none of that, no energy drinks or nothing. Just weed. I also think about if its a good time to smoke up like if I have to drive in an hour then maybe no or if I have some work to do maybe not so much it just depends everyone's different of course.
Both very good perspectives.
After smoking for 20+ years...I feel better and sleep better and function better when I quit. Weed is absolutely addictive.
Wise words Sir, could not have said it better myself
You sound like the only options were to smoke weed either daily or not at all. But there are many people who just enjoy it from time to time. Like once a month or a few times per year. As for me I see it like going on an adventure, a trip. A refreshing experience, but also something special and precious, something I don't have every day. And I prefer to get high when I'm in company with somebody I like a lot.
And I totally agree you shouldn't do it when you're too young. Certainly not
As a 24 year old stoner who has smoked since I was 14 and the last 8 years everyday don't let it become a habit it's is addicting because of how much better life is on it, I suffer from minor memory loss like I couldn't tell you what i did last week because nothing interesting happened so i kinda just erased those days, also it messes with your ability to sleep, dream, and eat without it. Wait till your 18 and don't become dependent on any drug

Smoked from 15-21. Addictive or not you form a wicked habit. Can vouch
Former stoner here, I was only a stoner for a year, and it has no pros if you're addicted. Days just fly by, and you don't focus on any life goals, and waste all your time on short term pleasures.
I've been consuming thc from the age of 6 to 26 ( I'm 26 now) I'm not addicted. I used to use it just to get high but then I noticed all the medical benefits. I was ruff on my body so I have alot of back pain and other pain. Thc sooths that pain by relaxing my muscles and also puts me in a better mood. If you disagree then just got to a doctor and eat your pills. Ima do what I do and your gonna do what you do and that's that
Carnage Records how have you been smoking since 6 wtf?
I am a 25 y/o engineer with clinical depression and type 2 bipolar disorder who started self medicating for said depression at 13. I often wonder how much weed has played a part in the severity of my, albeit genetically predisposed, psychosis and if it has affected my long term cognition. As someone who defines almost 100% of their self-worth on their intellect, I loathe the idea that my psychosis beset psychosis and cognitive maladaptations due to ill advised self medication from generations of family members. Never trust family, people...
Whoever made this animation needs a raise, cool vid!
Is it just me or is the pacing of this episode ever-so-slightly slowed down?

I started weed almost a year ago and it was constant , I got some friends who were into that , I was enjoying their company every time , we guys smoke up together and went high for hours sometimes days .... We were so constant that our day used to start with it and ends in complete black out .... Now they are happy in their life and I am hustling to quit it ... I forget what was the last time I was truly happy I am always in a bad mood , and the reason I am sharing this experience here bcoz I can't tell anyone else nobody gonna going to listen , it's the weed which helped me to get some friends but over time I lose everyone , I hope everything will settle down , idk but I am quiting ....
Im 46 and smoked weed for 30 years, and just tried quitting today for the first time and going good. Feel great. I’ve been reading that, after chronic smoking for this long can disrupt your behaviour. Mine was getting really bad and I didn’t know what was happening to me. I would lose my mind over any little thing. But, I’ve been so calm and relaxed today with not smoking. My mind has done a 180 with cannabis. In my 20’s cannabis was more of a euphoric feeling and helped me relax. Now it’s the complete opposite. I feel like It has turned me into a monster. My best bud since high school smokes more than me, and I see him going through the same thing. My friend and I, our personalities are very similar. It could be related to our personality type or I’ve read the fact that we both started smoking at 16 while our brains were still developing. Studies have shown that this has a negative affect on your brain.

Moderation is key. Even water is dangerous at high levels.
True, literally anything can kill you if you consume too much of it lol.
Weed is basically impossible to overdose on due to passing out before getting to toxic levels
U said it bro
@@johncarry6986 u too bro
GnSt4vo yea too much of anything at one time is dangerous
That happened to me. It spun up all my childhood memories.
I have social anxiety and mild psychosis now and for the last 12 years. I started smoking cannabis regularly at 15, heavily from 16-20. But I also smoked salvia and took Es.
I remember getting my first panic attack while dreaming and had insomnia for weeks. That was at the age of around 17.
I have a family history of mental health issues.
I gave up cannabis for around 8 years but have recently gone back to smoking very lightly (1 joint, once a week at most) and I am sure to source the right strains with a good amount of cbd.
My take away is: parents, please talk to your kids about drugs and family mental health history.
Kids: try to wait until your 18 or older before trying weed and then, try not to smoke heavily. Moderation is important. Think of it like alcohol, you don’t go and get drunk 5 days a week, and you don’t drink spirits straight when you drink.
Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but moderation is an intelligent and responsible way to approach it.
Also, if you’re an anxious person, I really don’t recommend mdma because the anxiety and perhaps paranoia will get massively heightened during the come down.
If you're suffering for anxiety, most drugs are to be avoided. All of them will make it worse in the long run. You know what cures anxiety instantly? Nothing.
The only way is proper, physician/therapist guided care, PROPER medication and making change for yourself. Working on your personality, having a healthy social life. This cannot be replaced by any one substance.
Longest way to say" we dont know?"
He explained something completely different, he explained how it affects you when you're high, when he said some people might get psychosis or as i like to call them just a regular bad trip, its actually dna in your brain from ancestors who used to either suffer from scyzophrenia or something related to mental illnesses that just get passed down to you.

I forget what happens when i get high, but when i get high again, everything makes sense again
It just feels like it makes sense, it doesn't really make sense. I stopped smoking and I will never go back to it. I'm sure many people can understand why. If you don't have problems then enjoy

1. Effects vary from person to person based on their life experiences.
2. Marijuana poses possibility of diminished learning ability for people below 25.
3. Mind and body becomes less sensitive to marijuana with frequent consumption.
4. No risk of fatal overdose.
5. No significant withdrawal symptoms.
6. Long term use could screw your head up, wanna take the chance?

US Gov’t: Marijuana is bad and has no medical benefits.
Also Gov’t: *Legalizes alcohol after prohibition and has had tobacco since colonial days even thought there have been deaths directly & indirectly caused by these two substances.
GangPardos Alcohol was banned from January 16, 1920 until December 5, 1933, but it was legalized because it was an unenforceable policy that caused more harm then good. More people were dying from not being able to purchase alcohol then having it legalized. Consuming Marijuana under the age of 25 has shown many problems such as you being more prone to inherited psychological disorders.
Careah Rox is this true though
Jim I never said she was wrong. All her facts are right, but there’s more than just that.

it's crazy how little we really know about weed psychosis delusions, it's kinda scary how it only affects some people, and seemingly so randomly. I hope more medical research is devoted to marijuana in the future.
@everyday tenor while it's not good for the developing mind it's harmless among most healthy adults
@everyday tenor Following factual research doesnt work in a post truth society because of the internet. youre only searching studies to fit your conformational bias. psychosis can be caused from weed but it can also be caused from over use of any substance such as caffeine. And there isnt enough evidence suggesting weed is the cause of schizophrenia
@everyday tenor Dk what you've read but I'm pretty sure it *speeds up* psychosis in people who already have it/make it worse.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that, not tryna change ur opinion or anything
@everyday tenor I got to agree with you there too.
I've actually been looking into many types of strains , the ones high with THC actually do harm people in the ways you mentioned, but CBD (medical one) actually helps.
Ig we can agree that weed, like everything else, has risks and ppl should be considerate and educated abt it
The ancient Chinese documented the effects
All subsequent studies are just rehashing the facts at $300,000 per study

Good upload.
Weed played a huge part in my teen years and influenced my entire personality and social circle. It was great at first leading me on many adventures and through friendships. But there came a time where all that started to change. It no longer made me feel good and relaxed, and started to directly trigger depression and literally smoking myself into panic attacks but I was addicted and couldn't stop, always telling myself just having more would fix it. After some influence came into my life that really put me in a position to stop completely, I no longer suffer from depression and crippling anxiety. I was smoking myself into misery and I'm really glad I was able to put it all behind me. I used to be an advocate for the entire world being high, I now see the dangers of society becoming so weed friendly. I think it should be a lot less common place these days. I believe a lot of people aren't willing to admit they are fueling their own anxiety and depression through self medication.
So how did you stop?
