50watt raycus fiber going to work engraving a quarter. 2 cutting passes followed by a cleanup of the entire piece. My hope is the cleanup pass will keep polishing to a minimum.
How do you learn this level of craftsmanship? All hard knocks of trial and error because I can't find any schools in So Cal and can't find any online training. I bought a 30w (want to upgrade it to 50w) fiber laser engraver about 2 years ago an still don't know how to use it. Being a noob Sucks!
If your hand's not at the focal point, with a 50-100 watt 1064 nm laser you'll just feel a little bit of warmth on your hand. If it's at the focal point, you're going to get burned, but nowhere near as badly as a CO2 (10600 nm) will because your skin reflects most light at 1064 nm, but absorbs most 10600 nm light.
Thanks for sharing your work! There is a question. If you are using a vector pattern, that means there will only be two heights on the medal - the surface and the bottom. Is there any way to get 3d relief with this laser?
Really just depends on how much material you can remove per pass. No way to control depth other than time/passes. Once you get to the depth you need you can rerun based on time and get pretty close each time.

If you are asking about the cleaning passes, try lower power high frequency, a tight hatching

So far it's been a fun toy but as we progress with it I'll be more comfortable in marking on expensive items such as those!

All depends on how deep you are trying to go. Settings will vary as well, and focus needs to be adjusted as the material is lasered away
