  • With his 1995 cult classic THE DOOM GENERATION-the blistering second installment in his Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy-now newly restored to its audacious, uncut glory and playing exclusively on the Criterion Channel, the filmmaker reminisces about writing papers on BRINGING UP BABY in film school, defends one of David Lynch’s most polarizing masterpieces, and calls John Waters “the original godfather of everything.”

for me, "the doom generation" introduced me to araki when i was 15 a year after it had came out in theaters. i was in high school and this guy told me it was the worst film he had ever seen. i saw it on late night tv and was enthralled by it. i've been a fan of his work since. in fact, "mysterious skin" was a film that played at my local art house theater 20 minutes from where i lived where it was supposed to play for a week. it ended up being there 3-4 months.

IMHO, Araki's "Nowhere" is his best. Cult Classic. Fell in love with it first time I saw it.
The acting; camera work; music; lighting; symbolism; pop culture; dark comedy.
Has aged well. Still love it. Bought it on VHS!? Come on, Criterion, let's do this!

“Nowhere” was my 1st introduction to Araki movies, & (in my early 20s) i & my friends rented “Nowhere” on VHS.. it was brilliant!! i wonder if the younger generations would say “it was so literal/meta”, but regardless, it spoke to me cinematically.. i sought out his previous film “The Doom Generation”, but it didn’t strike me like “Nowhere”.. his future endeavors have been intriguing as well, but “Nowhere” is my crown cinematic jewel of his, & i can find a copy of “Nowhere” literally, well: nowhere…

I would tape it, yes, VHS tape, kids, for friends, and they would look at me after watching it and give me this look like, WTF is wrong with you. Crackup of a movie.
