The first volume of the Années de pelèrinage, on which Liszt worked between 1848 and 1854, is among the first of the mature works of his Weimar years. It is based on material written more than ten years previously which originated in the period he spent in Switzerland at the beginning of his relationship with Marie d’Agoult, when the couple had decamped from Paris to Geneva to escape the scandal generated by their unmarried co-habitation. These were published in 1842 in a three-volume collection under the title Album d’un voyageur (S156). Liszt retained only seven of the original nineteen works, mainly those from the first volume - Impressions et poesies- and most underwent extensive revision. La Chapelle de Guillaume Tell is more or less a new work, retaining only the principal melody of the original although Au Lac de Wallenstadt is left virtually untouched.
The Transcendental Etudes are the pre-eminent works to embody the contradictions and contrasts at the heart of the man and his music: ‘transcendent’ both in terms of the demands they make upon the performer and yet, at points, in their spiritual aspirations.
The two Légendes are based on the miracles of two of the composer’s namesake Saints, St. Francis of Assisi, who allegedly preached a sermon to an attentive flock of birds, and St. Francisof Paola who, legend has it, crossed the Strait of Messina fashioning a vessel from his cloak and staff after a ferryman refused him passage.
The harmonic language of late Scriabin, the building of chords in intervals of a fourth (instead of the traditional thirds) finds a curious predecessor in “Late Liszt”, whose Nuages gris is using the fourth (or the augmented fourth, the tritonus) as the basis of the melodic and harmonic discourse.

It is nice that Liszt has some pieces that the listeners don't listen to it for its technical demand but for its beauty

Even though it was one of the goals of Liszt to become the Paganini of the piano, it's sad that a lot of people only reduce him to that. He was not only a brilliant pianist, he was also a brilliant composer.

Now I realize how much Debussy and Ravel owe to Liszt. Thanks BC and these outstanding pianists for a great collection of pieces.

Yes, I was also thinking of Debussy's piano music, less familiar with Ravel's piano opus, but I'm sure you are right....

not know exactly which of them, can come up to my mind...Part of the mysteries of the Multiverse.. I am pretty sure, then I will go to Bach...Right now..Liszt is being just perfect.
