Liszt deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Mendelsohn, Schubert, Schumann and Handel. He is that amazing!
Lol he don't "need" to be mentioned along with these composers because he is in fact greater and above most of the composers you mentioned for many reasons.
A great 2CD set, one of the finest Liszt "concept" albums: thoughtful programming, superb interpretation. (I've had and enjoyed it for several years now.) So glad it's posted here for all to enjoy, and to open people's ears, minds and hearts beyond the tired stereotypes of this great composer's works.
Wonderful collection of the famous and the unknown. May more people listen to it and experience a side of Liszt rather badly neglected, a side, moreover, as diverse and remarkable as anything in his vast output. One little correction of the tracklist. "Miserere", "Benediction" and "Pater noster" are parts from the same cycle, "Harmonies poétiques et religieuses", so their Searle numbers are really S173/8, S173/3 and S173/5, respectively. Likewise "Angelus" is the first piece from the third book of "Années de pèlerinage" - S163/1.
Too often people think of Liszt in terms of pianistic and orchestral fireworks. This posting should have them reconsider their impressions. Liszt was certainly a complex person: and these recordings show a side of him not too often heard. He and Chopin are often linked. But wildly different styles of playing and harmonic usage. There are almost some atonal moments here and certainly, motivic development far beyond most of his contemporaries. His personal transformation as he got older was genuine and is reflected in much of his music.
Russo's "Angelus" is absolutely spot-on. She could have included most (if not all) of the Third Book of "Annees de Pelerinage" as religious Liszt; and a good bit of the second book "Italie", as well.
Liszt saved classical music. Many of the big guns like Schubert, were deeply sick and weaK, so Liszt arra nged for them to be published and performed.
I’ve always thought of him belonging with the top 5 of those you just mentioned and certainly my top 4.
@@chp763 Liszt was perhaps the greatest pianist in history, but he was no better composer than Bach, Beethoven, Mozart.
What about Wagner? Vivaldi? Debussy?

Liszt was heralding the next chapter in the Music World when he composed this, IMO.
This is a very welcome refuge after trying to listen to Janácek just before landing on this site.
Hahaha ^^

Qué bello y profundo.

Such a gorgeous cover as well. Thank you
TECLAS MÁGICAS !!!!!!!!!!

Superbe Liszt!
Magnifique musique.
Thank you for this treasure!!!

Nice

You’re doing God’s work, friend

Not Liszt but Mozart Requiem :(
Transcriptions of Mozart are just tracks 2 and 3, from 2:11 to 9:13 only. Most of the rest is pure Liszt.
