I recall seeing this toy line advertised in a booklet that came with one of my Star Wars sets around 1979, and being thoroughly confused.

I have such a clear memory of being on the floor in the TV room and looking at that booklet for the first time and seeing those Butch Cassidy toys.

    But can you imagine
    if the Sundance kid was
visited by aliens , who bestowed him with
    a super suit ?

The way Siskel says 'prequel' is like the 1st time he said the word.
People today talk about studios making sequels & tentpoles bc they're less of a gamble, like that's some new trend. Dude was saying that 40 years ago.
But was Sundance making C3-POs out of spare parts & winning horse races when he was 5? No, that's what this prequel was missing.

Got Butch and Sundance for Christmas in 79 along with the Millennium Falcon and for me they were Han and Luke in cowboy disguises. It was a pretty cool line as it has a Brian Dennehy figure and Marshall Lefors besides the connection to Mallrats is technically a Robocop figure as he was played by Peter Weller.

I used to have the Cantina set...I got it at a thrift store in the box back in 1982 for $1 because it was just like the Star Wars playset. It was played with hard over the years and I'm sure mine is in a landfill somewhere these days. Thanks for the great story

Junky, job well done - you have a knack for compelling voiceover - your subject is fascinating. Some sources report neither Butch nor Sundance died in Bolivia but escaped and returned to the US where they hid and lived their natural lives incognito - the ending I chose to believe. The Truth of many old west legends is often more compelling than the fiction made-up about them.

Bizarrely enough, I had several of these figures due to my brother finding an unopened case along with various Kenner retailer catalogs while dumpster diving at a car wash near our house back in the day. I don't remember any other stuff like horses or stagecoaches, and he definitely didn't find that weird playset. I seem to remember the figures having spring-loaded arms so they could quick draw.

I had the Mint Wagon, the horses and I think I had all the figures. I really liked the Gatling gun on top of the Wagon, until I left it behind at a friend's house that I didn't see very often. Never got it back. I thought about putting in a "We really do care" claim, but thought he'd bring it back when I'd we him again, but he always forgot it. I bet he really liked it too. I think I did use the "We really do care" service for something, but I don't recall what for. That might be an interesting subject to discuss. Back to the toys, I thought the non posable soldiers in the wagon was pretty cheap, but overall, I enjoyed the line.

I was an 8 year old kid living in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba when this toy line came out. This was in 1979 and Gitmo wasn't yet a prison. It was a tiny base, really cool place to be a kid. The Navy Exchange always had weird toys and i think Kennet must have off loaded the whole line onto them. They had the entire line and my parents, for lack of much else to buy, and also because I was really into action figures, bought me almost every figure and the Cafe play set. I also had several Adventure People and I swear I had some of the Wild West figures. Never any Star Wars figures. Don't have any of them now.

I remember this figure line, just not sure if it was Butch & Sundance or Real Heroes of the Old West. Probably the latter. I remember the figures & the horses, but don't remember seeing the cantina. The figures were sold at Kay-Bee Toys where I grew up.

The film really isn't that bad. I'm reminded of that line from The Simpsons about the Sting 2 - this is from the Sting 2 so, no one has seen it. A bit like B&S, The Early Years. William Katt does his best Redford impression from the first film. Those toys look cool.

Can you imagine how hated Siskel and Ebert would be if they were still alive and reviewing modern movies with the same sense of honesty that they did back then? I’m kinda curious as to what their overall impression of the MCU would be.

The real reason the movie was called Butch And Sundance instead Sundance And Butch is because Fox didn't want anyone to think that William Katt was the. . . *wait for it* . . "Greatest American Western Hero". . . Hee hee. I'm sorry. I know that was bad. Sometimes I just can't help myself. ;)

I hate to say over rated but there are better Westerns made in the era. Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch is less glamorous and more guts. I don't see a toy line coming out of that.

the figures sucked. yes, the quickdraw action worked... for awhile, and the gun would sometimes fly out of their hand. the problem was that's all you could do with the arm of the figure especially after the brittle plastic thumbs broke off. then the bottom of the legs always popped off when bent. they looked okay and it was one of the few times kenner got the face sculpts even remotely kinda sorta close to the actors, imo.
