Risperdal

  • Risperdal or its generic risperidone was the second atypical antipsychotic drug marketed in the United States. Originally prescribed for schizophrenia, manufacturers now focus on mania associated with the bipolar disorder and irritability in autistic children. Other drugs in this category include Abilify, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Latuda, Geodon, Invega, Vraylar and Rexulti.
Off label use of Risperdal is increasingly common. Doctors now prescribe it for anxiety, depression, tics, anxiety, behavioral problems, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder and even insomnia. As many as 1 in 5 seniors in nursing homes receive an atypical antipsychotic. Prescriptions to children appear distressingly common.
Risperdal may result in a wide variety of potentially serious and long lasting complications. Among the problems are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and indigestion. Dry mouth, back pain, difficult sleeping, decreased libido and blurred vision may appear. More serious are tiredness, somnolence and impaired judgment or thinking.
Parkinson like rigidity and gait disturbances are not uncommon. Breast tissue enlargement or gynecomastia may develop in young boys. People may gain weight and develop diabetes as a result of Risperdal. A decline in blood pressure upon standing often lead to dizziness, fainting and falls. Seizures and decreased production of white blood cells by the marrow are other problems sometimes associated with therapy.
An involuntary, repetitive movement of muscles involving the brows, lips, mouth, tongue or extremities becomes increasingly frequent in parallel with the dose and duration of therapy. Known as tardive dyskinesia this well known complication of antipsychotics affects up to 5% at 1 year and 25% after 5 years. Unfortunately it rarely resolves even after discontinuing therapy.
Between 2011-2018 the FDA Adverse Reporting Database received notice of 3691 deaths in people taking Risperdal with the overall number of serious reactions in excess of 37,000. Estimates suggest the FDA receives notice of fewer than 1 out of every 10 adverse drug reactions. While inclusion on the list does not necessarily imply cause and effect, the numbers are sobering.
Drug companies sponsor most of the literature and medical reports dealing with drugs. Obviously these published studies accentuate positive findings and minimize associated harms. Patients and physicians require a neutral analysis to place pharmaceutical advertising into proper perspective. The Cochrane Collaboration does just that as an independent worldwide network not beholden to the drug industry.
On evaluating Risperdal, the Cochrane group concludes the evidence regarding Risperdal appears to be of very low quality with a probable bias in favor of the drug. As a result of the significant potential for harm, Risperdal and related drugs should be prescribed with extreme caution and not recommended prior to considering safer alternatives.

This drug nearly took my life. I was a productive member of society with many accomplishments and volunteer work around the world. After being sexually assaulted and subsequently harassed, I wanted to simply speak with a kind heart and wise soul. I was gas lit and told "men dont do that!". Then they told me Cymbalta and Risperidone were just a mild antidepressant and its helper. It was the most horrible 6 years of my life. I made funeral arrangements and had my will drafted because near the end I was completely bed ridden and certain I would die for 18 months. In fact I was in so much misery that I wanted to die and tried to take my own life. But thank you Doc for being honest about the stupidity and frequency of giving this to pregnant, lactating women and to children. Lost nearly $200,000. of retirement savings and now I am fighting to keep my home. You see these drugs were originally marketed as "chemical lobotomies" and checmical restraints. I question the motives of any "doctor" who prescribe "chemical restrainst" for anyone who is reporting that they are being abused or harassed in any way. That is the opposite of "health care". That is predator enabling. So now my small business is gone because I am pretty sure that no one can run a business while being lobotomized. So now I am on social security because the DRUGS made me legally disabled. Can't drive, can climb stairs, gaimed 70 lbs, joints dislocated, couldn't see, constipated for at least a week at a time and zero sex drive....causes rages and horrible obsessions. How anyone can call that and all the organ and brain damage risks, when prescribing it to trauma survivors is beyond me. But thank you for mentioning how over prescribed, how dangerous they are and how the drug compainies basically lie and push these drugs on the public like manipulative mafiosos. In fact I would not be surprised if the mafia owned some of these pharmaceutical companies. It simply does not resemble health.

@@dreamznaspiratons7064 I've been clean from psychiatric dope for 2 and a half years now. I don't even take antidepressents or benzos anymore. I had no one to give me advice and my "doctors" were abusive idiotic misogynists. They told me to just "skip every other day" and that withdrawals are "no big deal". They told me that even benzos ar not addicting when in fact ALL psych crack is addicting. So luckily my ex husband came to feed me and wipe my butt because I was nearly a vegetable...it was the worst experience of my extremely difficult life. But I would not let them beat me. So I started crawling at first, trying to reignite my lust for life. I was barely alive and I crawled to the kitchen and made super food smoothies while sitting on the floor. I google and searched all of the online and facebook support groups. I took nordic fish oil, lions mane from realmushrooms dawt calm...and solgar niacin. I am going to add the third part of the "Stamet's Stack" soon when I get all my emotional ducks in a row. I also like ashwaganda, "free and easy wanderer", "nightie Night Exra" by traditional medicinals and "Magtein" by Now brand. I exercise daily in nature. I eat almost 100% organic foods to keep my gut health impeccable. I eat and make my own lacto fermented veggies. I grow the veggies in my own organic garden and that is probably 50% of my source of good mental health...I cannot stress how wonderful it is to garden...search for "hugelkultur"...it is a game changer. I do a lot of volunteer work. And it is hard to find a supportive community but until I do (and forever afterwards) I surround myself with dogs and cats from the shelter, plus chickens and goats....they keep me active happy and healthy. The other creatures really know how to live in the moment. They know what life is all about. Humans are just a lost and confused species. As the song says, "we have to get back to the garden"

I gained 200 lbs over 10 years time. Had gastric bypass and lost it all in a year. Im starting to gain a little back, so since ive been stable for 8 years my dr is ok with lowering it. Im also on lithium. I am schizophrenic and bipolar with borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder.

Johnson and Johnson finally agreed to a settlement 2 years ago but I'm still waiting on mine. I am completely destitute and unable to make ends meet but was doing perfectly fine before I was prescribed Risperdal. The only reason I was put on Risperdal in the first place is because my abusive guardian didn't want to deal with a rowdy teenage boy

Works well to stop impulsive thoughts and help people ‘get on with it’ at low dosages. 2mg is a high dose. It’s still an antipsychotic though so you’re gonna have side effects. The question is whether they outweigh the burden of whatever you’re medicating or not.

I don't know whether this drug caused me depression or my information from internet that resperidon blocks dopamine d2 receptor and serotonin receptor and makes you unhappy etc, caused depression, legs tremor, restlessness, suicidal thought etc. I can say that resperidon 5 mg for 10 days caused me suicidal thought, restlessness, leg tremor, etc as at that time I never searched the internet about resperidon, d2 receptor block-low dopamine=unhappy, suicidal thought, restlessness,
But cannot say whether ariprprazol and low dose(1mg) of resperidon with sertralin 50mg caused me restlessness, suicidal thought, depression, etc as at that time I searched the internet. Please help. Are side effects dose dependent, I researched and found that only movement side effects of resperidon are dose dependent.

Resperidone gave me dystonia (neurologist diagnosed after 11 years of frustration and a lot of weird misdiagnoses)
with neck spasms so horrifying it scared my family members and gave myself whiplash
I would fall often and trip on stairs etc..
To point of fracturing my C3-C7 vertebra and having vertebral collapse
I got an ACDF with autograft if my own stem cells and the discs have healed nicely
Majority of disc herniation scalding pain and numbness is gone
But the tics , spasms and tenseness is still there
They said I will have it for life even though I stopped taking this med in early 2009
I took it from age 14-19
Which come to find out is a VERY VERY important time in adolescents brain development that you DO NOT want to mess with
I wasn't depressed I showed zero signs of schizophrenia or personality disorders
I had just been raped and was having night terrors and PTSD symptoms
Because I was under 18 in the late 90s-early 2000s resiperidal had just come out and been the only antipsychotic approved for children under 18
so it was a go to for every psych at that time
Oh yeah so I had to have my gallbladder removed at 23 (I was otherwise healthy 23 -year-old vegetarian) because of that medication and I know two other people including a nine-year-old boy had to have the gallbladder out from that med
    It calcified the gallbladder
Even though I haven't taken that horrible nerve toxin of a med in 6 years my dystonia will be here for life and is progressing into Parkinson's slowly even tho that wasn't in my gene plan
Risperidone also messed with some of my enzymes so now there is hundreds and hundreds of medications that I cannot take including muscle relaxers (besides Valium ) esp skeletal muscle relaxers
They do the opposite to me, I go into full technique and every muscle is extremely rockhard tense for up to 12 hours
It's inanely painful can't even think about it so moving on
    Here's what's helped
    - staying rested is a must I know it's hard because body is so tense
    - Taking lots and lots of b vitamins esp B12 but all B's
    - Staying low stress
    - CBN (not CBD I'm saying CBN)
    - Periacton
    - - sometimes Valium or klonopin if very bad
Come to find out most antipsychotics and antidepressants are B vitamin inhibitors
Ex: anti depressants like a lexapro and Paxil are known folic acid inhibitors and can make a person defecting in them to lint do nerve and or brain damage
Lamictal and other anti epilepsy mood stabilizer are folic acid , thiamine , and bitoin inhibitors
Resperidone can cause major multiple B complex deficiencies , and vit D ,potassium , magnesium ,and calcium absorption issues
Almost ALL psych meds deplete your B12 as does alcohol ,cigs , stress etc..
I beg any of you please please from somebody with a disability that could've been 100% avoided PLEASE PEASE DONT GIVE THIS TO YOUR CHILD PR LET THEM TAKE WETHER THEIR 8 or 28
Schizophrenic, BPD, MDD etc. or not

Are you available to talk to. My case is absolutely frustrating to say the least. Which is why I'm on here looking around. I'm in New Hampshire and I kid you not we have 1 psychologist and he has leukemia and is leaving because of it. It took 3 months to get in to get help for this and get in to have the dr say I shouldn't have even been accepted because he's leaving in a few months. So there would be no way for him to spend the time to get to know me and put together a plan for how to engage what is needed for me specifically. Also said there was nobody coming in to fill the spot as of yet....I pretty much was told in more or less words that theres pretty much no hope anytime soon. Its beyond discouraging and frustrating. I have absolutely no clue where to go from here. I'm trying my best to get help but I have no idea where to go from here

I'm 21 years old and my doctor prescribed me .25 twice a day. I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone. Like time has stopped. I have been deathly afraid of medication for a while now and am terrified something in me will break for good. Just came off Prozac and am being prescribed this drug for anxiety (I'm somehow allergic to every SSRI I've been on. I'm terrified right now. My doctor is a smart lady, and this is sort of a last resort for my mental illness, which has gotten so bad due to my Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder and fatigue issues that I have extreme derealization.
But ive heard all these horror stories about it, so what do I do? Everyone in my life tells me not to trust strangers on the Internet, but rather my doctor instead.
Just took my third dose and my mind seems slower. I was prescribed it two day ago, and im scared of taking another dose. What do I do? Oh hell.

risperdal is a great medicine for those who have schizo or bipolar conditions, or have irrational thoughts or personality disorders.. but it might have some serious side effects which may show itself in long term usage. biperidon (akinton) may be used to improve the side effects. to stop it, it is important to gradually lower the dosage to prevent withdrawal effects.

The longterm outcomes for this kind of medication are horrible. Psychiatrists usually don't support you to get you off of medication. Never stop cold turkey.

From what I understand risperadone treats impulsive behaviors ( pulling hair, picking, repeated actions, etc.). Usually prescribed at lower dose for impulse behaviors. Can be prescribed between 0.1 and 6 mg. And it should always be highly recommended to go to therapy for cognitive behavior counseling to help give you tools to deal with the behavior. After researching this drug, I also found that after successful therapy to reduce the behavior, risperadone should be slowly decreased to stop taking it. It's only suppose to be a temporary supportive treatment for impulse behaviors not a long term solution.
