No it's not. Maybe the first time but you get the hang of it pretty quick. You really feel the weight of the cars. In GTA 5 you don't feel the cars at all. Pathetic!
I feel like people have gotten so used to GTA 5's arcade driving that they simply can't pick up GTA 4's realistic handling and physics causing them to think it's bad then give it unneeded backlash
If I remember correctly gta 5 was like that on the 360 and ps3 They had to tone it down for the first person view when they rereleased it so that the car model wouldn’t clip into the players view or something like that
And if your engine got trashed and won't start you just call someone and it starts up. So you can trash your car and as long as it's not on fire you can drive it
Mafia 2 driving felt like driving the rock. Like the game didnt have more freedom turning on corners, felt like suspension is very low on all vehicles.
@SeriousDragonify I mean... you were driving cars from the 30s, 40s and 50s, they should have handled like crap. Although I found it quite fun in my playthrough
GTA IV and V have the same problem but on each other end. In GTA V, every car handles like a sports car while in IV every car handles like a boat or an SUV. I agree with VI being the best of both worlds and have every car actually handle differently.
I wouldn’t say every car in GTA V feels like a sports car, I’d say they feel more like mobile open wheel cars, sports cars would mean a lot more slidey and a little less wide turn radius
Gta V and its map kinda needed these cars, can you immagine playing gta 5 with heavy cars ? It would be very annoying in the mountains and other terrains
@@dvd.- But this is the point of having obstacles lol Just like in real life, you just don't take your daily sedan to the mountain and just drive straight to the top ! It is simply impossible ! (At least not offroad) Having a challenge, a requirement to use an SUV/Offroad vehicle would make the game actually way more fun ! GTA 5 driving feel like having a cheat code to me ! The driving is so boring than using a no clip mod would be the exact same thing, that would be just as fun !
GTA IVs was a good blend of Arcade and Realism to me, I wouldn’t say Rockstar were trying to go for full on realism because for example, jumps in GTA IV will never really destroy your car unless you go off from a weird angle, the car jump physics in IV are kind of weird, imagine GTA V’s air control except the game slowly tries to do it for you to put the car on all fours when landing, there is also the lack of damage, I could drive off a bridge, land with the grill facing the ground, and it will glue to the ground with only small dent to the front bumper rather than it being completely smashed and bouncing flipping to its roof since it landed almost on its front rather than bottom, the air control comparison I made earlier is kind of hard to notice but install a map mod with big jumps and you’ll notice how it slowly goes into trying to land on all fours
The Mafia series use Illusion engine and it seems a lot more realistic than all of the GTA games, especially when car crashes are severely more fatal. There is some similarities between the driving physics of Mafia and GTA4, but I feel like Mafia just does it better. That being said, I have a feeling GTA5 wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is if it had stayed on the realism path, especially online. I don't really have any issues with it but after replaying all of the GTA games recently, it was the thing that stood out the most to me, the driving physics seemingly downgraded between 4 and 5 and the game got a whole lot easier. I've always thought that GTA SA is the best game in the series, but it would be freaking amazing with the same engine and physics as GTA4.
The games are in different eras Mafia takes place in the 1930s where the most car safety was smoking a cigar and the most popular car then was the ford model B with 50 hp
@@SD-rp8zm I wouldn't have played a single second if gta online had the driving physics of gta 4. I've played gta online for over 4000 hours... I hate almost everything about gta 4.
You’re not alone bro I was enamored with everything about that game from day one especially the driving, just because when you got to multiplayer it was a great feeling besting your fellow players
Dude what, that's the most overrated thing loved about GTA IV Trust you'll get loads of people hating Driving in GTA V That's the least supposed unpopular opinion 😂😂😂
@@succulentflakesofperfectly5541 in gta4 you were able to tell who is a good player and a noob just by watching the person driving lol... people saying it was bad, probably never learned how to drive in that game LMAO
They dumbed down the driving because all the 10 year olds started crying that it felt weighty. Next they're gonna remove the tap mechanic to sprint and ride a horse because people are too dumb to tap a button.
Another fun fact to drive the point home: Open Wheel races (F1-like races) had a record player count when compared to other featured playlists. And it lasted a few good weeks. It's clear players like a challenge because these races involved taking care of your car because even simply losing your front wing would mean dropping multiple positions due to no grip, unless you pitted to repair. Players WANT a challenge!
@@klaud7311 Idk man, but I think this is what we call a "skill issue". Unless you're driving a time attack car (and even so in some cases), you're gonna experience a bit of understeer going too fast.
As much as I enjoyed GTA 4's driving, mafia 2 blew it out of the park, without doubt, cars felth weighty just like in GTA 4 but the sense of speed was much better when you achived it, in GTA 4 I always felth stuck at 90 km/h
Problem is suspension is completely stiff unless you’re actually driving over bumps or turning hard. You can go 300 mph and have zero shake or deviation
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NEVER STOP MAKING CONTENT! You will blow up, you’re too good and these have too much passion, quality, and wit to stop. The day is coming :)
I find it funny how big this debate has gotten over the years. Just hope Gta 6 has options when you can actually adjust the driving physics, similar to Mafia 3 when you have Arcade or Realistic.
a note about FiveM from the guy who is actually working on FiveM: the drift vehicles had nothing to do with the acquisition, it's simply a common misconception due to the timing and content available on FiveM. the drift handlings on FiveM were done with existing GTA 5 vehicle physics technology, by the community, editing the handling. nothing to do with FiveM team itself. Rockstar just made the handlings on their own. :)
Actually the 3D era used the Renderware a common engine used between ps2 era until EA bought the company who made it and that's were Rockstar shift to Rage Engine they were developing after GTA SA so yeah they were ahead making their own stuff without outsourcing their tools.
I absolutely adore GTA 4's driving mechanics. Each vehicle feels so different, you feel the weight transfer of the cars, the suspension bouncing and the springs creaking. I remember getting stoned in 2007 and playing for the first time, I spend hours just comparing the feel of all the different cars. The Blista Compact was so much fun, as well as the Vigero
GTA 5's car damage is actually pretty good. No, not the deformation, that was heavily reduced, but the mechanical damage is pretty good. Wheels bend quite easily on some cars, plus they added fuel/oil leaks and radiator damage which causes the engine to overheat and massively reduces performance or makes the car undrivable, whereas in GTA 4, cars always retained the same performance until they stopped working. Unfortunately the handling is way too forgiving therefore you don't crash too often and damaging your vehicle isn't even a real risk, plus most people play online where new dlc cars are all actual tanks with zero damage model so these mechainics are almost always overlooked.
"whereas in GTA 4, cars always retained the same performance until they stopped working." That is false. Clearly you've never deformed a car enough in GTA IV. The only improvement V made are parts falling off cars (+ wheels) otherwise it's a downgrade. Even the video showcases this.
@@BDozer666 I did the swingset glitch plenty of times like everyone else, so I deformed cars beyond recognition. The only thing that affected the driving was the wheels getting stuck etc, but as long as all the wheels were fine the car drove the same way no matter how damaged it was
I hated the driving physics on GTA 5 since day 1. It’s crazy how that was the biggest downgrade considering the games title. Makes sense for the bigger and more open map so am hoping they go back to 4’s physics with GTA6 pls 😭
A thought: one thing that I think is lost in translation at times is the difference in games between platforms. Namely, in acceleration. Game controllers (at least by GTA IV's era) typically put acceleration on the triggers, and have the ability to discern different levels of trigger pull. This allows for variable amounts and rates of acceleration, as though you're holding down a gas pedal to different degrees. However, this is almost NEVER available when playing these games on PC. Unless you're setting your PC up to use a game controller, you're trying to control these games with a keyboard and mouse, which use keys and buttons. These aren't dynamic -- they're pressed, or not pressed. On, or off. So the gas pedal is either stamped down all the way, or isn't being held at all. This can pretty dramatically change how driving feels in a LOT of games. GTA is a big one, but you can also feel it on Saints Row, Burnout Paradise, and Sleeping Dogs, just to name games in my Steam library that I've played on both console and PC. Anyone playing these games on PC might know how to drive, but if they don't have a controller, they've effectively had their ability to make nuanced maneuvers removed or seriously hindered, having to feather the gas on and off to achieve the same kind of midway speed they could get with a partial trigger pull on consoles. This is PARTICULARLY a pain in the ass for any mission that requires you to follow someone.
Yea they are kind of holding our hands too much with the driving. The mid air controlling of the car, practically being impossible to die or flatline the car, irrelevant damage as well. And i actually thing San Andreas (if the acceleration was on a trigger) might actually be the best driving or close to it.
In GTA 1 and 2 the world was actually 3D. You could ramp over other cars, and there were secret cars and pickups that were only accessible by ramping or going into tunnels.
I really enjoy your videos, even though I have to make a considerable effort to understand a language that isn’t my own. You convey the details of the subject matter and arguments very well. Driving in GTA IV isn’t difficult, but it takes getting used to and understanding that each vehicle is different, including traction. Honestly, I find driving in GTA IV much more fun precisely because there’s a challenge to it. In GTA V, driving feels quite dull; there’s no challenge at all. That’s why I’ve never felt the urge to play GTA V again, but I’m currently playing GTA IV for the third time. I truly hope that the physics in GTA VI will be more similar to those in GTA IV.
Great video but you should've added the ps3 and Xbox 360 A.K.A OG versions of GTA 5, I mean during the earliest versions of gta 5, car deformation was not as bad as it is now, Wheel detaching was possible in the OG versions, Two much damage and deformation on your vehicle caused your vehicle to stop working like if you damage your front corner of your car too much, You can't take turns and it was quite challenging but in next gen versions like PS4 and PS5 also PC versions, They dumped down these details for better fps and smooth gameplay which is quite sad
Great and clear video, mate! You have examined Euphoria physics and vehicle physics in detail and seen the facts. For this reason, you are very right in your statements. It's a shame that human and vehicle physics are no longer at the forefront in today's games. Games feel so artificial now.
GTA 4 driving wasn't that bad, but GTA 5s feels alot more satisfying, and is alot easier, while GTA 4 is more heavy and realistic, hopefully in GTA 6 they can find a middle ground.
The fact of the matter is that the majority of people prefer arcade style racing, and the majority of people hate it when their car gets damaged, and appealing to the majority makes the most money. The best game design talk on youtube is _Honest Game Design_ by Victor Bocan. You cannot please both parties. There is no "happy medium". The only solution is to include a "simulation driving" setting in the menu for advanced players, like Mafia 2,3 and DE. I tend to think of IV as the spiritual successor to _Mafia: City of Lost Heaven_ , because of the dedication to realism.
A good resume I would make about realistic driving vs arcady driving is: - Arcady Driving appear to be fun at first, you have less difficulty to turn etc... cars can handle more damage, you can turn back on wheels your vehicle if upside down etc... but on a long term this driving become quickly SUPERRRR boring. - On the contrary, realistic driving appear hard and require more skills, and is actually when more fun on the long term ! Personally, I got bored of the GTA 5 driving physics in less than 2 weeks, I remember when I pre-ordered the game in September 2013, first thing I tested when I actually had the game was driving, and I still remember how "cool" it appeared at first in comparison to GTA 4, it was actually possible to do hard turn at 130 km/h... and then after some hours of playing I quickly realized how boring this driving mechanics where !
When I shoot a wall, and a decal shows up, the world is reacting to me. When I drive like shit and hit a wall, the world is also reacting to me. Video games are awesome when the world reacts to you, but not everyone wants the same reaction.
I loved GTA 4’s driving, and I got good at it, trying to take the driving style I learned into GTA 5 ended up being a hindrance. What I thought would be a perfectly timed handbrake turn around a corner now ended up landing me into a corner building. Driving isn’t fun anymore, it’s a chore.
I agreed with you completely! GTA V driving physics kept me from fully enjoying the game smh. GTA IV is my favorite game of the series because of its driving physics. What is sad is that GTA V came out on my birthday in 2013 only for me to play it for two weeks and then moved on all because of the physics.
I've always found it weird how slow motorcycles are in GTA 5 when compared to cars, their max speed is stupidly low, even when fully upgraded, compared to a stock station wagon, SUV, or sedan
Yo you never heard some one say thay love driving in SA well here you go sir. I argure that the driving in SA is more fun then both IV and V. Maby not more realistic exept gta 5, SA is more realestic... I spent so many hours learning to drift in gta SA and its the most fun i hade in a driving game ever. This is the ps2 physics not PC
Yeah, driving in SA is pretty good. It's the only game you can drift cars in without mods (GTAO doesn't count). Also, SA physics are the same on both PS2 and PC. 5's driving is just downgraded SA driving with IV's physics bugs on top.
@@BDozer666 well I agree with most you say but the physics are not the same on PS2 and PC, the PC version is more wobbly and some of the cars have diffrent top speeds. But still the best driving of any GTA in my opinion.
I rememeber trying to steal those two cars at the start of GTA V and remember crashing into every barrier and my steering felt 500% sensitivity. I was very disappointed learning that GTA Vs handling was nothing like GTA IV, and ...then Johnny made an appearance. GTA IV was my guidance with learning how to handle cars and steering. I learnt in a 2005 VZ Commodore wagon which is a perfect example of a car which its physics and handling would fit GTA IV. Driving a Lancer feels like driving a Sultan and driving a Primo is like driving a Commodore sedan Gee, guess which country I come from 😅
As someone who's had a very intimate relationship with the RAGE engine, including its physics engine, I can confirm, without a doubt, that neither GTA V nor GTA IV use Bullet. It's an in-house physics engine developed as part of RAGE. Or maybe even AGE, as I've found some evidence that suggests the same physics engine is used in Midtown Madness 2; which suggests that the physics engine used in IV and V (and VI) is an evolution of the one used in AGE, and thus originally developed by Angel Studios, Inc. (Now known as Rockstar San Diego, Inc.)
i've been getting a ton of remarkably well edited and underrated videos about GTA recently, and you're no exception. great analysis and earned a sub from me
I’ve always enjoyed GTA IV’s driving. Sure one may have to get accustomed to it since the driving mechanics are different, but I never had an issue with it ever since I first played the game back in 2008. Thanks for the video man, keep up the great work!
Theres a few streets/intersections in GTA IV at the end of almost all of my sessions, i just drive through at top speed and tbone cars to be in awe of the destruction physics before i turned it off.
Gta 4 physics would have been fine with all the car upgrades we got in 5. Car too sluggish? Engine tune. Too much bodyroll? Upgrade suspension. And the mods would be more dynamic. People might opt for lower level suspension or weaker engine tune to get power to the ground.
19:50 This is also the case in GTA IV. They both share a lot of the same physics bugs (that funnily didn't exist in the 3D era). 25:07 They need to find a mid point between San Andreas and IV, not V. It was a big missed opportunity to not talk about San Andreas and what it did right. V's driving setup is pretty much downgraded San Andreas driving, as San Andreas had a much better balance of arcade and realism than V. Body roll actually existed and was properly applied to correct vehicle types. Cars of the same type had more handling variety between them. It didn't have the forced traction control system of the newer games or the weird physics glitches. It did some things better than IV.
The skill curve necessary in driving GTA4 made it more fun. But since GTA6 is gonna have quite a bit of swamp, I'm not sure they're gonna risk making geting stuck in mud as easy as it is in real life unfortunately.
I’ve always argued that GTA 4s driving is superior but then I went back to play it and boy is it FLAWED in some places, not being able to make a turn if you’re going faster than 5mph is the most annoying thing, besides needed an entire city block to come to a stop from 30mph
There is still no open world driving game that has beaten _Mafia : City of Lost Heaven_ (2002) in destructibility of cars. The cars were insanely detailed, and their collision meshes were more accurate than any GTA or RDR or anything I've seen. You can break the gear box in that game. It could leak petrol and the tank would empty. The cops will literally shoot the wheels off your car while you are driving, like your wheel will fly off, like you are left with 3 wheels, and you can still drive it. It's actually the only game I know where the wheels can be misaligned, and it happens a lot because of the old cars. I simply do not understand what is wrong with modern game developers.
I never liked the driving in gta iv when it was the newest gta and after gta v. I don't care for realistic driving in a game when I can just go outside and drive my car. Even then, my 2008 dodge van handles better than every car in gta iv and that speaks volumes
@J.PC.Designs that car can get up to 120 real easy and it handles like a dream when compared to 70mph in any car in gta iv. Hell, any car I've driven irl handles better than the cars in gta iv. The 2 subaru sedans, a 99 chevy tahoe, an 04 land rover, 99 nissan pathfinder, my 08 dodge van, a 96 camry, an 02 civic, a 2016 murano, a 2011 altima and a 2019 ford suv. So it's not like I haven't driven more than one car and none of them feel lile you're driving on ice 24/7 even at low speeds. On top of that, you don't get up to high speeds in gta iv often either so why even bring that up? It's not a fun handling model and if you want realistic handling in a driving game, go play an actual racing sim game with a real racing sim setup
@@NoobyNotyeah exactly. People really love the bouncy physics of gta 4 for some reason because it’s more ReALisTic wgen in reality it’s just excessive suspension travel and worse turning angles and because gta 5 has less of both gta 4 is somehow the better model because ‘realism’. Anyone who has driven in a game like forza, gran turismo, asseto corsa, etc. especially with a decent sim setup knows gta 4 is not realistic, it’s just more challenging and not as fun. It feels like a chore to drive whereas in gta v I wanna drive forever.
Completely agree but i will say gta 5 and 4 has better driving physics than most driving games. And nowadays good driving in gta 5 is not crashing alot
bullet is just a middleware like euphoria. and it´s still in use to this day. in the source code leak you can find it. even with the copyright for "Bullet Continuous Collision Detection and Physics Library" but it´s not for cars and such. it´s basically for objects like props rolling around, the collision detection etc. the vehicle handling and everything is indeed since GTA 3. like in the handling file it still had a comment from 1999 at the top and the file that handled the spawning of parked cars, still says "car generator control for GTA3"
Have you driven any of those drift upgraded cars in GTA Online? Especially slowly? They are so unrealistic and unpredictable that I literally cannot drive them. Contrast that to GTA IV where the handling comes naturally to me. If I crash in GTA IV, it's because I screwed up somewhere
@@MuscleCarLover weight transfer in GTAV is non existent. The first time I got a drift car that’s exactly how I was trying to drift.. absolutely pointless! In gtaIV you can use the Scandinavian flick to induce power slides and drifts, try that in GTA5 lol.
@@1035pm Yeah, flicking it into a corner simply isn't a thing. I guess the more arcadey handling breaks my brain a bit, just the drift handling compounds that for me
@@MuscleCarLover I think playing too much GT, Assetto Corsa and Dirt2.0/WRC2024 have given me the ability to actually drive a car. People are all calling for realism and emersion, yet not when it comes to driving… in a game called grand theft AUTO! Blows my mind.
@@1035pm Yeah, it boggles my mind too. In GTA IV, I like that you have to treat a Comet like a 911, think ahead of time when driving an Emperor or Cavalcade because they're still Cadillacs and also be able to downshift by tapping the throttle. It adds another layer to the overall gameplay. Meanwhile in V pretty much everything is a go kart (some of the more recent additions at least have a bit of body roll). Not only the challenge of actually driving a car or riding a bike, but it also means you can let it rip in a Dukes or lay a long strip of rubber on a sports bike. I hope GTA VI is at least halfway towards GTA IV vehicle physics
day one gtao player, fan of the franchise since 1998... day 1 of gta 5 i said physics wise, the game was a downgrade in comparison to IV. while in V all cars feel the same, in IV each one felt unique, you cound get into a car and feel the difference in weight and handling depending if youre driving a old car, suv or sport car.
They need to just know what needs to feel real and what should be toned down. Driving should be realistic because it keeps u engaged but I dont need to be eating every 20 minutes because my character is losing weight rapidly and getting weak.
Most of GTA IV shortcomings in this matter could and should be fixed on GTA VI with tuning such as upgrading to stiffer suspension, grippier tires, aero parts that actually matter, etc. They should go towards the Gran Turismo 7 route with tuning, although of course simplified and dumbed down.
Also, I bring it up pretty much every time the topic comes up, but I can't imagine that Rockstar's decisions in GTA 5 weren't influenced to some extent by people constantly comparing GTA IV to Saints Row 2. Saints Row 2 usually being thought of as "the fun one", in the period comparison. SR2 was and honestly still is my preferred of the two, but this was never a fair comparison and it looks less and less like one nowadays. But why was it made? Without video evidence in this RUclips comment to back it up or having extensively played SR2 recently (within three years but not within two), I have to go off my memories. SR2's cars are nowhere NEAR as dynamic as GTA IV's in terms of suspension, rollability, et cetera, though they're also nowhere near as samey and bricklike as the prior generation's cars (which is helped by SR2's elaborate car customization system). Which I think is part of it -- GTA IV marked a very big change in driving style from what people were used to, so it felt starker. SR2's cars provide variety and some easily felt degree of difference in handling without REALLY interrupting the power fantasy. But honestly? I think a bigger part of it is _the map._ GTA IV's heavy New York-inspired grid strongly discourages speed. Its "freeways" are not long, and its heavy traffic inhibits your ability to really lay the hammer down. As mentioned, all of this can be a positive! Limitations encourage creativity. But it does make people long for what they don't have. More than that, though, the grid feels _samey._ It's very much not in practice, there's a lot of unorthodox intersections, exceptions, and changes in elevation that make the streets unique. But you can go through long stretches of driving, particularly in Algonquin, where it's just stoplights chained into stoplights and the turns are all 90 degrees. Saints Row 2's Stilwater, by contrast, has very, very few areas that have a grid layout. It's basically just the Barrio and some chunks of New Saints Row! Everywhere else, the streets curve with the terrain, the intersections are very rarely pure 90 degree crosses. It's still purely urban, the closest it gets to rural or backcountry being the Suburbs Expansion area with its trailerpark and coastal roads, but there's not a single part of town where driving through it feels the same as driving through anywhere else. The freeways still aren't unlimited, but they're very much longer compared to the chunks you can use in GTA IV's Liberty City, so you do have areas if you want to try and fully let loose with cars at max speed. Is all of this strictly _superior?_ I don't know if I'd say that. It wouldn't make sense to bust up GTA IV's grid, you'd lose the New York feel. But at the same time, I think the game would have avoided a lot of the "less fun" statements if it had still had that countryside it was supposed to originally, a place without the street grid where you could let loose on less populated roads and try other types of terrain. That's very much something GTA V has, which I think is also part of why it was very well-received at first; if you didn't have the North in V and were restricted to driving in Los Santos it'd get old much quicker. Ironically, GTA IV's more complex suspension system was, honestly, held back by GTA IV's map design and constraints, at least to me. I think it was poised to REALLY shine and showcase itself if it had been put into GTA V, with its much more varied terrain and long stretches of low-populated northern roadways.
If you install GTA V from disc, without any updates, you'll have something closer to GTA IV physics, where you could lose a wheel if you smash your car. Sadly, they downgraded everything.
People said that being realistic sucks. When your car deforms too much or whatever but to me that's where the fun is. Imagine having a 6 star wanted level and you need to change vehicles because your current vehicle is heavily damaged it makes the chase more challenging and tense rather thab being in a sports car getting chased you dont need to worry about anything you just press W its not fun at all
Im not sure about the 2d titles, But the "3d" titles (3, VC, and SA) all used RenderWare, Not Rage. Rage wasnt used until gta4/rdr1 and are considered the "hd" titles
People used to complain that GTA 5 car were hard to control at launch. I'm pretty sure they somewhat tweaked stuff and added tractions to all cars, but at some point they just made all cars awd BC ppl couldn't take turns without crashing with the og cars (they have alot less tractions and you have alot of decent stock drift cars) GTA 5 physics are not as complex at 4 but I don't thinks it was a bad thing neither since 4 was too much for most players and even in gta 5 ppl were crying about low grips and how they wanted actual drift cars that you can just press on the gas and drift BC they don't understand how to actually function to pedals and handbrakes to actually drift a car and also how suspension affect over and understeering witch the dev never explained to anyone or don't even understand themselves (stock or street for the +5 tractions are the best to drifts for most cars since lower suspension just make ur car spin out for nun and harder to control for most cars) GTA 5 physics are more fun in my opinion but the developer failed at teaching the players how to actually drive cars (clutch kicking, braking to make ur rear slip out before starting an handbrake drift, how brake+gas causes wheel spining even while driving) and allowed noobs to take over with the cars that turn on a dime at 200.
lmao, the cybertruck in gta 6 would be hilarious, it would be funny seeing your character get thrown out the windshield from a 5mph crash (the cybertruck has no crumple zone whatsoever)
Everyone forgot that gta v pushed ps3 and x360 to it's limits so they toned down the physics unlike gta 4 which was capable for advanced physics with low graphics and smaller map Gta 6 should learn rdr2
My issue with 4s physics are the body roll and lock ups. Most modern cars have abs so they shouldnt lock up but older cars should. And race cars should aswell. Beyond that its better than gta 5 minus curb boosting and brake boosting over bumps for speed boosts
gta 4 driving physics made the driving something you actually had to oay attention to. Dense traffic, sharp turns,. You can't just go 250mph and whip around a corner no problem
gta v cant have gta 4s wonky physics, have you ever been chased by the terminator AI in gta online? they never miss with those micro SMGs and would aimbot you out of the vehicle if they crashed into you and flipped your car or made it unbalanced from a bump into the players car. since the AI are more aggressive it makes the snappy handling a must to get away or drive fast while able to shoot back, if you get bumped in gta v no problem is easy to recover from it. it would be a nightmare to have it like gta 4 where once the car flips over you have to get out then it would be the AI aimbotting you as you get out and kill you before you even get fully up from getting out of the upside down vehicle, so im glad gta v had simple handling for cars, i just dint like the downgrade to ragdoll physics.
Then don't have terminator/super aggressive AI either. When making changes to a game, ofc you'll change more than just 1 thing so they all work well in tandem.
My opinion on gtaiv driving is that it literally gives you more feeling, visually and also physically. it feels having more "content". but gtav's driving feels has less feeling thus feels has less "content" in it
Ye it's pretty sad the direction they decided to go with GTA5's physics, but there's a lot more factors that impacted that decision to downgrade it beyond just making it appeal to a larger market. (1) The developers were already pushing the limits with GTA5 in other aspects and there was not a lot they could do with hardware from 2005/2006(last gen consoles) the developers were saying how there's a lot of details in the first trailer that never made it to the final game simply because they caused it to run so slow(look at the foliage for example), the driving and other physics in GTA4 were very intensive and unoptimized(just look at how it runs on PC) and would just cause the game to be even slower or not run at all. (2) Tons of people cherish the physics now, but they were hated before GTA5 released(just look at gta forums pre 2012 lol) combined with the previous fact it is clear why they massively downgraded it compared to other aspects. (3) Possibly a gameplay and stylistic decision, the realistic driving fits the tight streets of liberty city, while the arcade driving of 5 better suits the wide and long roads of los santos. If you swapped the driving mechanics using mods neither game would feel right and it wouldn't be fun to play. Agree with the last part tho, really hope they can find some middle ground for GTA6. The driving felt like you were in a boat even if you were in an AWD sports car in GTA4, and it felt like you were glued to the ground even driving an RV in GTA5, from the leaks the deformation looks really good but can't make a judgement on the physics yet.
Realism in games is good. The more realistic the game is in any way, the more immersive it is. Let's be honest, what kind of game would make it easier to forget that you're playing and it not actually being real life, the pixelated graphics and poor mechanics or realistic graphics and mechanics. Like, if the game is realistic, it makes it harder to distinguish the game from the real life which is the purpose of gaming, to escape from reality.
Is GTA 4's driving really that hard?

@@CLA82529 I agree and I found the driving a lot of fun.
a note about FiveM from the guy who is actually working on FiveM:
the drift vehicles had nothing to do with the acquisition, it's simply a common misconception due to the timing and content available on FiveM. the drift handlings on FiveM were done with existing GTA 5 vehicle physics technology, by the community, editing the handling. nothing to do with FiveM team itself.
The wheels smacking the curb in gta 4 is so realistic and fascinating
Have u actually played gta 4?
"whereas in GTA 4, cars always retained the same performance until they stopped working."
That is false.
The only thing that affected the driving was the wheels getting stuck etc, but as long as all the wheels were fine the car drove the same way no matter how damaged it was
Don't forget that gta 5 was running on 2006 hardware. That's like gta 6 being on the ps4.
I hated the driving physics on GTA 5 since day 1. It’s crazy how that was the biggest downgrade considering the games title. Makes sense for the bigger and more open map so am hoping they go back to 4’s physics with GTA6 pls 😭
I can't stand how cars in GTA V have zero grip, it's like driving on ice using summer tires.
Mid air controlling should be toggleable in races cuz it’s annoying without it.
Great video but you should've added the ps3 and Xbox 360 A.K.A OG versions of GTA 5,
I mean during the earliest versions of gta 5, car deformation was not as bad as it is now,
Wheel detaching was possible in the OG versions,
Two much damage and deformation on your vehicle caused your vehicle to stop working like if you damage your front corner of your car too much,
You can't take turns and it was quite challenging but in next gen versions like PS4 and PS5 also PC versions,
They dumped down these details for better fps and smooth gameplay which is quite sad
For me, I like GTA 5's driving physics, it just makes driving through the map feel soo energetic. But I absolutely love GTA 4's crash physics.

A good resume I would make about realistic driving vs arcady driving is:
- Arcady Driving appear to be fun at first, you have less difficulty to turn etc... cars can handle more damage, you can turn back on wheels your vehicle if upside down etc... but on a long term this driving become quickly SUPERRRR boring.

Yeah, driving in SA is pretty good. It's the only game you can drift cars in without mods (GTAO doesn't count). Also, SA physics are the same on both PS2 and PC. 5's driving is just downgraded SA driving with IV's physics bugs on top.

I have a mod pack for V that makes the driving on par or maybe even better than IV, is there any way I could send it to you

Gta 4 physics would have been fine with all the car upgrades we got in 5. Car too sluggish? Engine tune. Too much bodyroll? Upgrade suspension. And the mods would be more dynamic. People might opt for lower level suspension or weaker engine tune to get power to the ground.
I was 27 when GTA 3 came out
Intro song ?
They just didn't want to pay for the Euphoria Engine
I keep coming around to nice ass videos. now to sub
Carmageddon TDR2000 had similar effects
I never liked the driving in gta iv when it was the newest gta and after gta v. I don't care for realistic driving in a game when I can just go outside and drive my car. Even then, my 2008 dodge van handles better than every car in gta iv and that speaks volumes
you drive a dodge van. Not exactly the car you go street racing or get into a high speed chase with.
So it's not like I haven't driven more than one car and none of them feel lile you're driving on ice 24/7 even at low speeds. while in V all cars feel the same, in IV each one felt unique, you cound get into a car and feel the difference in weight and handling depending if youre driving a old car, suv or sport car.
2:15 I get it, its a joke, but you could have mentionned Driver on the PSX, and his "GTA-like" before GTAIII driving.
Great video, one of the best I have seen on this topic! I agree with everything you said.
I think a bigger part of it is _the map._
GTA IV's heavy New York-inspired grid strongly discourages speed.
I love the car's physics of gta 4 because you drive a car and not a toy car like in gta 5. And thats for me a dealbreaker to play gta 5.
Send your car through the swing set glitch 2 to 3 times,
and if you don't blow it up. Sometimes you could drive it and it just looked so fucked up.
If you install GTA V from disc, without any updates, you'll have something closer to GTA IV physics, where you could lose a wheel if you smash your car. Sadly, they downgraded everything.
yeah GTA IV driving physics were perfect
Paul walker was in the passenger seat.
Your videos are extremely polished and high quality, I thought you had 1m+ subs until I checked it just now, really underrated channel!
Paul Walker was & still is a legendary actor and human ❤
Can‘t wait for the cybertruck in gta 6 💀
Having the rear axle snap during front impacts will be interesting
lmao, the cybertruck in gta 6 would be hilarious, it would be funny seeing your character get thrown out the windshield from a 5mph crash (the cybertruck has no crumple zone whatsoever)
@@J.PC.Designs yup! And since coil (tesla) already is in gta V they‘ll 100% be in gta 6 too.
I wonder if they‘ll also introduce chinese brands
GTA 5's PS3 version had much better damage. They downgraded damage in the next gen ps4/xbox one versions. just look at it
Everyone forgot that gta v pushed ps3 and x360 to it's limits so they toned down the physics unlike gta 4 which was capable for advanced physics with low graphics and smaller map
Gta 6 should learn rdr2
My issue with 4s physics are the body roll and lock ups. Most modern cars have abs so they shouldnt lock up but older cars should. And race cars should aswell. Beyond that its better than gta 5 minus curb boosting and brake boosting over bumps for speed boosts
But Paul Walker wasn't the one driving when he died...
gta 4 driving physics made the driving something you actually had to oay attention to. Dense traffic, sharp turns,.
You can't just go 250mph and whip around a corner no problem
idk, Saints Row 3 is still my favorite driving mechanics
Mafia 2 with PhysX on has the best driving physics.
gta v cant have gta 4s wonky physics, have you ever been chased by the terminator AI in gta online? they never miss with those micro SMGs and would aimbot you out of the vehicle if they crashed into you and flipped your car or made it unbalanced from a bump into the players car. since the AI are more aggressive it makes the snappy handling a must to get away or drive fast while able to shoot back, if you get bumped in gta v no problem is easy to recover from it. it would be a nightmare to have it like gta 4 where once the car flips over you have to get out then it would be the AI aimbotting you as you get out and kill you before you even get fully up from getting out of the upside down vehicle, so im glad gta v had simple handling for cars, i just dint like the downgrade to ragdoll physics.
Then don't have terminator/super aggressive AI either. When making changes to a game, ofc you'll change more than just 1 thing so they all work well in tandem.
The AI aggressiveness is ridiculous in V and should have been inline with GTA IV.
My opinion on gtaiv driving is that it literally gives you more feeling, visually and also physically. it feels having more "content". but gtav's driving feels has less feeling thus feels has less "content" in it
gta 4 is my favourite gta game. i LOVE realism.
