    I always felt like this one doesn't get enough love. I bought it for the Genesis and it quickly became my favorite game of all time. I own a few versions of this one!!

      I can't agree more, as it is by far my fave action game of this entire era... many of my friends don't remember of have even heard of it!?!😲

  • @Koniving
    @Koniving 2 года назад +2

    For blind jumps, you can lower yourself safely with the action button and down. As a kid I never once considered just...blindly walking off the ledge and somehow I can't believe how funny the animation is and myself having not done that.

    Great video! I loved this game when I first played it. The controls reminded me a lot of Prince of Persia, so I was able to get used to it pretty quickly. One of my favorite areas in the game is once you get past the Jungle, you have to do odd jobs in order to earn money to enter a game show. The hub world and little side jobs were really cool for the time.
    Also, just a little nitpick, but you can mitigate a lot of the "blind jumps" by climbing down. If you approach a ledge and want to get down without falling into the unknown, approach the edge, turn around, then press the action button while pressing down and Conrad will ease himself down to the next screen. As long as you're still holding action, Conrad will hold on to the ledge and you can pull yourself back up if you're going to fall further than you want to.
    Thanks for covering this (and on the Genesis)! Loved your coverage of the Space Quest games. Hope we get more soon!

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  6 лет назад +1

      Hey thanks! -- yeah, I figured that out after the fact when I was replaying some portions of the game and didn't have time to re-do the script. I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the manual or not so I'm not sure if Casual Joe Gamer would be able to figure that out on their own without a walkthrough or something... but yeah, much easier just climbing down!
      Glad you enjoyed Space Quest! Eventually plan to cover the entire series as well as some of the fan remakes/sequels hopefully. Thanks for watching!

      @@FridayNightArcade :) No problem! Also, if you have time, try the fan remakes of Kings Quest II and Kings Quest III. I highly recommend them as they do a fantastic job of bringing those games into the modern era and fleshing them out, while still remaining faithful to the source games.

    I just found your channel and this is awesome. I lived on my SNES back in the day is this was one of my favorite obscure games. Not many of my friends heard of it let alone played it. Funniest scene was falling do your death and the enemies shooting each other. CLASSIC

    Out of This World demo was on my Star Trek 25th Anniversary floppy disks. I never got very far in the real game, because it didn’t have a save function and it was one hit game over. Flashback on the other hand was much more playable, and I played it on both SNES and Genesis. I highly recommend it!

    Never got past the first level on this and I tried for many days with a friend when I was a kid. It's just too damn hard.
    Just tried it again almost 30 years later and it is still frustrating as hell to play.
    I don't even know why they didn't make the level scroll, it just makes everything so cumbersome.

    I loved the hell out of this game, but I really wish they could have incorporated the "gun walk" into it as more of a strategy. That is the walking while holding the gun animation. there really is no practical purpose for it in the game because from that stance if you have to shoot something, it takes longer than usual to ready the gun. From a combat perspective, it's much faster to crouch down then ready the gun for firing.

    I am the first one to never read a manual before playing a game (but I do after). For this game, you MUST read the manual. They actually thought about a lot of things for the movements. The most important part (and I don't think the manual is very clear about it) is the automatic jump! Yes, I said automatic... Once you understand how they work, you can easily get to the last level but passing that one will not be easy...

    Have you played many good cinematic platformers besides this and _Another World_ and _Blackthorne_ in the time since making this video? I'm curious what your opinions on games like _OnEscapee_ (Amiga) or even _Moon Crystal_ (NES; fan-translated) might be, or heck, modern indie games that sort of do this kind of thing like _DreamBreak, Forgotton Anne_ or _The Way._
    I definitely didn't like this title growing up - As a little kid, I couldn't wrap my brain around the fact that a game might want more deliberate controls and detailed animation than Mario or Sonic; just move when I hit the buttons, dangit! - but I certainly appreciate 'em *now* and try to seek out cinematic platformers like these from time-to-time. Maybe I should look into finally nabbing a copy of _Heart of Darkness_ for the PSX these days, actually...

    Have to disagree on the Sega CD version being the worst version, but I'm biased as I started with the Sega CD version, which has superior soundtrack and fantastic 3D cutscenes that replaced the pixelated originals.
    Was surprised how limited the original was when I purchased and quickly returned it for the store. The 360 remake was ok, but different take
    Can agree it has a great story and looking forward to the sequel later this year

      flashback is def the best out of those 3 games. out of this world is fun but to short and blackthorne is half decent but everything feels to repetitive in the game after a while of playing. I'd buy either the PC or genesis version, i played the snes and it sometimes has frame drops in its play especially during cut scenes.

    The "remake" of Flashback is just pure garbage. Nothing like the original and the worst kind of cash-in shovelware you will ever find, awful.
    I have played this type of game a lot as a kid/teenager. Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback, Blackthorne, Oddworld etc. Love them all, good times.
    There are a few games like Flashback being made currently. Lunark is one that looks pretty promising and it should be out some time next year.
