honestly, it's easy to bash this game if you don't understand it. But overall it's actually quite a fun game. The overworld requires you to do specific things as you progress to unlock more pages. But many people just can't put the effort. The mini games aren't as difficult to master or yet you can break them to make them easier. The itchy and scratchy game is the easiest one to progress. But again, "i don't understand it there for it's bad" It's such a horrible way to look at a game. Which is basically what you did. The indiana jones level is a puzzle level. Figure out how the platforms react to you moving. Yet you just wanted to rush through it. The best level is the bartman level. Just because it's a small quick shooter. The godzilla bart level is SUPER easy. The second level where it has you climb to beat homer is more difficult. Sadly, games like this are easier to just bash on get a quick like from those that give it a 2 minute playthrough and quickly give up than those that are willing to learn it. Hell, people are quick to try and master the "good games" but give up on hidden gems like this. It's sad how people are quick to judge without actually giving it a go. Yeah, I'll admit. The snes / 16 bit era had some great titles, but few are willing to give the time to titles that aren't 10/10 master pieces. I played this as a kid and quickly grew to understand what you had to do. to my surprise how many people quickly over looked it. Which I'm surprise you did as well considering you've played WAY worse games but still praised them. Nostalgia? Or just playing favoritism? After a while you run out of things to review, so you dip onto things you don't know shit about and just follow what people agree on. Horrible way to see things. The later levels do get more difficult. But not a bad game.
First, you are literally the only other person that I have heard ever say anything nice about this game. And I agree with pretty much everything you said about it. This game is definitely one of my favorites from back then. But I didn’t think this review was really all that harsh. Especially in comparison to every other review I have seen.
Dude, FNA runs a gaming channel and I am guessing he has thousands of games on more than a dozen platforms. Sorry if this game was not the most Epic piece of crap, ever, he was stuck with from his birthday until Christmas, as you were.
As someone who has owned this game for decades now, I will defer to Mike matei's judgement of its merits. Look into it if you enjoy watching good people suffer so we dont have to.
Well, that's your opinion. You're probably right in your assumption about people calling it bad just because it's hard and not giving it a real chance, but this is not always the case. Many people have actually played it quite a bit, know how to play it, and still hate it. Keep in mind that we always tend to really like games we grew up with and are nostalgic for us, even if they're bad. I've owned this game for 2 decades, and while I wouldn't call it bad, I certainly wouldn't call it a hidden gem. I guess if you can look past it's brutally difficulty, have a ton of patience, can figure out how to play all the mini-games, and know what all the items do, then it could be great for certain people.
These were the days where Simpsons video games were just pumping out one after the other. I thought this one was alright but my favorite had to be the Itchy and Scratchy game. That was awesome
They do a great job emphasizing on this game being a dream, the lack of music and bizarre world made it all feel very dreamlike and trippy, I even remember as you got weaker the game-world would start to fade away while you would hear a weird muffled voice of somebody that was trying to wake you up it was all like "Nana? Naaaaaaaanaaaa!" just the memories give me good chills
Simpson's Road Rage and Hit and Run are by far my favorite Simpson's game. I played the PC and PS2 versions. Well, other than the arcade, but that didn't get a console release really.
You just made me realize that, in the three decades, I've never played a Simpsons game on any console. Lack of opportunity as a kid and lack of interest as an adult. I've only ever played the Simpsons arcade game and the handheld electronic game (catching falling cupcakes, which was very fun!).
I remember playing both Bart's Nightmare and Virtual Bart on the Genesis. Never owned an SNES until way later in life. Both were very odd games and Virtual Bart was insanely difficult
sad fact, as a kid I only had a black and white TV in my room so never got anywhere on bart vs the space mutants as I couldnt see the purple objects. Luckily a walkthrough eventually came out in a magazine lol
This game is a running gag for my Twitch streaming buddy. He hates this game, and everyone keeps requesting it on audience-choice nights. Then all of a sudden, here's this review. Don't think it don't say it
I was obsessed with the Simpsons as a kid, and beat most of em with the aid of Game Genie. No way can a normal person beat it without dedicating their lives lmao
This was a pretty good game, I liked how you could strive for greater ratings even as you lost and got slightly different endings, the mini-games were pretty funny, and while the game lacked a save system I do not think it would have benefitted much (if at all) by having one, not a perfect game, but pretty solid for its time, still decent today, I wish every mini-game had several levels that triggered randomly during the game, so there is less focus on one, and much more variation all in the same Update: Never mind, this game had music, but it would fade out when Bart was at low "Zzzz's" and about to wake up
I have a Simpsons shelf in my arcade room and I made sure to make special mention of Barts Nightmare. Before the game was announced, I remember my friends and I being very excited about any news for The Simpsons Arcade on the SNES. Imagine our disappointment when this game was announced instead. I was very cold towards the game but intrigued by the nightmare part of it. I did end up owning and beating it.
For some reason all the NES and SNES Simpsons games are so hard, but I never owned them, I only had those a few days, so I didn't know if I could have beated them. I rented this game when I was about 16, I found it very very hard, and my 16 years old version was very good at games, but I think with more time, I could have finished this one. I have it installed in the SNES classic, I have to find time to give it a try again. Nice review!
I rented Bart's Nightmare a couple times back in the day because I loved The Simpsons and the box art was freaking cool. I could never figure out what I was supposed to do so I would get frustrated and play Bionic Commando instead. That usually went better until I died and had to start all over again. God bless the save start revolution...
I played and even owned this back in the day, and it was okay, but it took a LOT to figure out how everything worked, and some of the games were better than others. I don't necessarily think that it's always bad design for something to be difficult to immediately pick up and play, but get better once you get to really understand it, but when you have essentially 6 different games in one, and most of them are like that, it's a little much. I like this just fine, but if I were to pick it up now for the first time, I probably wouldn't spend a whole lot of time with it. Also, I totally agree with you about Bart vs. the Space Mutants: the first stage was great, and they should've kept with that for the rest of the game.
1:16 What is wrong with Krusty's Super Fun House? You killed me man!!! As a kid, I can see the disapointment. And yes, the Simpsons universe is just used to sell the game, there is no link at all. So this add to the disapointment if you are a kid. But it's a solid puzzle game, in the same category as Lemmings. So it gets pretty hardcore at the certain point... I am not saying it's an hidden gem and because it requires a lot of investment, I am not sure it's worth it today. That said, I discovered it when I was 20 and I had some fun with it.

Love your channel but totally disagree. This game was awesome when it came out. The game's challenge is what kept me comin back in childhood. Beating it felt incredibly rewarding!
I never played this one. I think I was so disillusioned by the mediocrity of the three NES Simpsons games that I had given up by the time this one was released. In fact, by then I probably realized that 99.9% of movie/tv licensed games just plain blew.
Lol when I originally recorded the VO I must have been in a cold medicine induced stupor because I said the wrong name of the game. Two days later I was editing and realized it, rerecorded the line but my cold had gotten progressively worse giving me a discount Barry White sound ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No I didn't play when it first came out but I did get it and there is a pig mini game maybe she's exclusive for the Sega version I did have it for Sega
That game tried it's best.
Always good job FNA....I’ll definitely take your advice and won’t try it the game, looks cool tho
Yea the game was a nightmare
i loved this games as a kid the only one those level that i hated was the indianna bart because it was infuriating and cheap
👍👍
This game is tedious especially the pig one
Was that an incredible edit at 0:53?
Lol when I originally recorded the VO I must have been in a cold medicine induced stupor because I said the wrong name of the game. Two days later I was editing and realized it, rerecorded the line but my cold had gotten progressively worse giving me a discount Barry White sound ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just tried it earlier on some emulator. Hated it. What a garbage game.
Ugh super crusty fun house not good but barts nightmare was not much better..... Took awhile for anyone to get a good simpsons game
This is a decent review but I just see skill issues left and right
