every episode so far has been hit or miss with jokes, but once they land on Namek is when I feel the series hits its stride and goes gold.

I don’t know if anyone else has said it so far but Mr. Popo in the actual show is like super kind and stuff so his reimagining in abridged is like exact opposite of how he is in the show. Which is obviously the joke 😂

Fun fact, the whole "Fake Namek" thing I think was an entire arc in the actual series. And yes, it was a total waste of time.
Now to explain a couple of things that might've flown by: The guy at the end of the Kai episode was Yami Yugi, voiced by LittleKuriboh and the star of YuGiOh Abridged. This came out during a playful feud between the two abridged shows, where they would throw references back and forth at each other, such as the Fake Namekians mentioning something about a children's card game. The villains in the Fake Namek episode reference a duo from YuGiOh Abridged who had a similar dynamic, all being a reference to Aqua Teen Hunger Force, with the Fake Namekians referencing the Plutonians and the duo from YuGiOh Abridged referencing the Mooninites.
Really the main takeaway from Episode 11 is establishing a bit of Goku's history that will be referenced again later, as well as Gohan's mounting issues. Five years old, poor kid has been through quite a bit. Also, between the show and the movies you've probably been hearing that "Frieza" name drop quite a bit. Meanwhile Episode 12 is mostly a throwaway save for the developments with Vegeta. Poor Krillin though.
Kai was a fun experiment, but Kai 2 is definitely a major step up. So is next week going to be the Bardock episode and 13, or just Bardock? Oh and I looked into the timing of Movie 3, and it looks like it lands just after Episode 17 or 18 at the latest, unless someone else has a more specific timestamp. Whether you want to go for the movie then or just save it for after the season is entirely your call, I'm on board for these reactions either way. It's been quite the trip so far.
But either way, we're here. From here on out, the quality will start to show very noticeable growth, and by the end of the season reach the beautiful butterfly stage that everyone associates it with. As usual the reaction was great and I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll handle the tale of Goku's origins and of his "scientist" father.

Funfact nobady has asked for it: That talking cat is Korin. One of Gokus masters for a short time, he reached his enormous tower as a kid to get stronger. Also in the german dub, he is called "Meister Quitte" = Master Quince. like the fruit looks like pear. But not that tasty.

Hope you’re having a good day guys. If you’re curious, the reason that the “Kai” episodes are big plot summaries if because 10 years after the original dragon ball Z aired, they redubbed it with better voice acting and eliminated all of the filler, like the episode 12 material I believe. If you ask different people you’ll get different answers as to which is better because the original dub kinda went off script sometimes and wrote a lot of original lines that really resonated with people, whereas Kai was basically a 1-1 of the source material.

For me it was Kai for regular episode stuff but the Funi Dub for the really intense and badass moments.
I’m also one of the people who really like the falconer score for a lot of those moments. Vegeta in particular gets treated really well by the combo.
@@GokuInfintysaiyan yeah the score was the biggest loss in Kai definitely. There’s a few videos by Totally Not Mark called “who did it better” detailing the differences in key moments like Super Saipan 3 and the original transformation. It’s really good.

The guy watching the Dragonball Kai at the end of the Kai episode was Yami Yugi, from the series YuGiOh, the Abridged version, which is Little Kuribo's solo project (Which to my knowledge was the first Abridged series made) that the rest of Team Fourstar have occasionally helped out with. Another reference to Yugioh Abridged was on Fake Planet Namek when one of the aliens mentioned a guy wanting to play a "children's card game" with them. This is a direct nod and reference to Yugioh Abridged and most likely to Yugi himself who is very fond of playing Yugioh with anyone and everyone he meets. He is the "King of Games" afterall.
Krillins cap was quite interesting as it read "kulilin", which is how the Japanese would type "Krillin". Japanese alphabet doesn't have a proper 'R', or 'L', instead it's a little bit of a combination of the 2 and is used as either, or when using romaji. The Japanese alphabet represent whole sounds instead of individual letters. So the closest phonetic simily to Krillin in hiragana turns out to be: Ku Li Li N.

And now we get to the true DBZA experience. Everything up to this point was basically the team getting their bearings. From here on the show is on a one way course to the peaks of awesome and it does not stop until Episode 60 comes to an end.

Uh i forget, another funfact: When Popo and Bulma jumped to Jupiter they actually made it kinda accurate, because you can the the giant "Red Spot" on Jupiters surface, which is a ongoing hundreds of years old storm.
At 10,000 miles across, the Great Red Spot is the largest storm in our solar system and has been continually observed for around 200 years, but it's been around for much longer. (Compare that with big storms on Earth, which generally last a few days or weeks at most.)

After the next couple of episodes the series really starts to hit its stride. While Frieza is a great villain... the one after him is on a whole other level... He's so well done even the original DBZ team took notice.

The fake namekians is a couple of filler episodes in the original series. TeamFourStars will keep filler in if they think it can be funny and good for character development, like letting us see Bulma, Gohan and Krillin's chemestry a bit. And i dont think there is any secret to the fake namekians, it was almost to the point of their lore, although they were slightly less dumb in the original episode. There is a posibility this was an april fools episode too, but I cant quite remember when this came out.
As a wise man once said: "There is no fake Namek. Moving on."

Glad to always catch these! The format you guys are doing is probably some of the best. Your getting through it at a decent pace. Mr. Popo was a savage to Bulma and Krillan, (surprised he didn't get an owned on that woman comment)

Trivia:
The flashback with Goku & Mr. Popo is from Dragon Ball(the og series) Goku meets Korin(The talking cat) learns about Kami from him and when he gets to the lookout, he meets Mr. Popo. Korin I think put him through a trial in order to meet Kami. Point: He met Popo upon ascending up there.
Also, the power pole he used in "Dead Zone", the movie with Garlic Jr, was what he needed to get up to Kami's lookout. It's still lodged between Korin's home and Kami's lookout.
The bits where everyone takes cyanide is entirely filler, albeit relevant filler to the anime since its where we first learn about Freeza, who you'll meet soon. What actually happens is those people on the invisible ship lost their homeworld to Freeza, They're initially hostile to Krillin, Gohan and Bulma, but they warm up to them and allow them to leave their ship. Thus our heroes continue on as if they'd never met these people. :P
The fake Namek stuff is also filler. It's one of the most boring filler arcs in my opinion. The two aliens were in fact stranded on that planet and wanted to steal their ship to get off of that planet. When they mentioned the "children's card game" they were referencing Yu-Gi-Oh, which LittleKuriboh has made an abridged series on. It's very funny and I reccommend checking it out! Kuriboh is also the voice actor for TFS's take on Freeza.
The guy you saw was KaiserNeko, he's an editor for TFS as well as one of their voice actors. He voices Yajirobe(the large samurai that cut Vegeta's tail), Korin, and the toilet in Kami's old ship.

Just as a mention on a joke that went entirely over your heads, when Dr Brief calls the Japanese 'damn moonspeak' it's a reference to old imageboard culture calling Japanese writing systems 'moon runes' .
DBZA is pretty good in season 1, it can be hit or miss, but holy shit Season 2 onwards is just pure gold. The pacing, the jokes, everything is just brilliant. Can't wait for you to get to it
We've already been watching ahead and you are right. Season 2 is starting off sooo much better in terms of laughs and jokes we actually get haha

You will happy to know that episode 12 is actually considered to be the worst of the whole series. Because it is nothing but filler. Even the voice actors consider it the worst. I actually watched a video by the man who voices Goku and Gohan in this series where he listed every episode, in order, what episodes he thought were the worst to the very best. And he had 12 listed as the worst.
Oh wow. Not sure which is the worst episode so far, but we heard from here on out it’s pure comedy gold 🥳

I can imagine, TFS has a pretty good track record of knowing when to do something relevant with the Filler episode's, or just leaving them completely out.
The part with the 'fake,' Nameks is like a carbon copy of another two characters from "Aqua Team Hunger Force," Called Spacecataz. If you look it up it's the first video on youtube with a yellow guy in the frame. It's an amazing little comedy bit.

Mr. Popo may seem like a joke character at this point in Dragon Ball’s legacy, but fans are quick to forget that back in the original series, Mr. Popo was actually quite the powerful deity.
It’s only because everyone else has become so much stronger that the character is no longer taken seriously, but it wouldn’t be that surprising if he could still show most of the Z Warriors a thing or two- at least Yamcha.
Believe it or not, but Goku has never defeated Mr. Popo in battle. Popo not only easily beats Goku, but he also swallows a Kamehameha wave.
When Goku uses the same punch that he used to take down King Piccolo on him, it turns out to be completely useless.
Mr. Popo goes on to impart some of these skills on Goku while he trains him for the next three years. He teaches him essential abilities like how to sense ki without using his vision and the Super Kamehameha when he prepares for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament.
Mr. Popo’s strength continues to get shown in Dragon Ball Z when he trains Krillin, Tien ,Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Yajirobe during the arrival of the Saiyans.
Additionally, in the anime, Popo also briefly trains Goten and Trunks and can hold his own against them while they're Super Saiyans, so he's clearly stronger than he lets on. No one truly knows how powerful he may be.
I always got the sense that Mr Popo was a supposed to be similar to the Bodhisattvas in Journy to the West. They could assist the 4 pilgrims but couldn't actually carry the scriptures themselves. Mr. Popo helps the Z warriors in all sorts of ways in the story, but never takes part in any of the battles.
His name being a cute German word for Butt makes him less intimidating now and maybe his dead stare will stop haunting us 😝
speaking of abridged Popo, according to Nick "Lanipator" Landis himself (the voice of Popo) he revealed at Youmacon 2014 he had gone up behind Chris Cason (Funimation's Mr. Popo) and said "Hey Maggot how's it going?" in the Popo voice, to which Cason turned round and said "Sou YOU'RE the reason" 🤣

The Kai episodes are just to recap but with jokes that they either missed or wished to put in there. and its also to poke fun at the Kai series wish is just a re-done PG version of Dragonball Z.

I think the biggest problem with these early episodes was that TFS had a rapid fire quantity over quality approach with the humor and that just doesn't work well imo, even if some of the jokes are really funny in theory they don't give them time to breath so you can react to it. They really get MUCH better at pacing from now on though.
The joke with mister popo is that in the original story he is super nice. You always see him feeding birds and he always helps everyone, and in this show they made him so creepy.

The character at the very end of DBZ Kai episode 1 was Yami Yugi from Yugioh Abridged. It's created by LittleKuriboh, who voices almost every character in it. In DBZ Abridged he also voices the narrator and Freeza, who will appear very soon.
I recommend watching Yugioh Abridged at some point. It's considered the first actually good abridged series.

One of my favorite parts of Dragonball Z Kai Abridged is when Nappa says "I am hilarious and you will quote everything I say", so true and that last part with the guy screaming at Mr. Popo, the guy was Scott KaiserNeko Freirichs, one of the founders of Team Four Star

The Fake Namek arc was filler that was written to try and let the manga author pull ahead. By this point, the anime was starting to catch up on the manga so there was a lot of filler. They spent a couple of episodes on the fake Namek (Which is where the footage from the montage was pulled from) and it wasn't revealed until the end that it was a fake Namek and the aliens showed their true forms (in the actual show, there was not a giant, flashing 'fake Namek' sign). Until then, you were led to believe that they were really on Namek. It wasn't Krillin's nightmare, either, it actually happened and they had to fight the monsters and escape.
Dragon Ball Z filler can sometimes be kinda bad, and it was one of the most lackluster filler arcs. But TFS were just kind of giving it a headnod for the absurdity. In the manga, they have a relatively event free trip to Namek and that's when things get serious.
In Dragon Ball abridged, the moment Krillin, Gohan and Bulma put boots on Namek is when the series finds its feet too. The Namek arc also features one of the most iconic (arguably the most iconic) villain in all of anime, and TFS do him justice and manage to make him legitimately terrifying but keep the jokes going, too. You'll see what I mean. You've heard the name 'Frieza' be dropped a couple of times at this point.

Just like in the Original every season needs an episode or two to establish the new plot. Still TFS does this with lightning speed compared to the original DBZ so dont worry ;) in the behind the scenes video that was released on another channel recently they say that the way they wrote the episodes improved drasticly from about ep. 14 and onwards. Seeing beth cringe at the "Oh look at that a woman who doesnt know any better" line is something that the creators do as well nowadays. They blame it on they're youth seeing as this season first released around 2009 and the fact that jokes like those were relativly accepteble back then, allthough they admit that they didnt exactly age well. So yes there will pop up a joke like that but except for the cases were the characters were written that way in the original (i.e. Roshi beeing an old perv and Bulmas father beeing the stereotypical old republican in many ways, meaning somewhat mysogenistic, homophobic and somewhat racist against non humans having relationships with humans.) they succesfully went on without relying on these kind of jokes. The Same thing happened with Hellsing Ultimate abridged which started around that time as well, should you ever come around to watching that. Anyway I'm glad you seem to enjoy the series much more than you did in the beginning and I hope you will continue to do so 😃
We do our best to take the “offensive” jokes with a grain of salt and realize that it’s an older show. If they relied heavily on It then it would be tough to get through. But every now and then isn’t so bad 🤗
Honestly, they had very little to work with. The whole going to Namek thing was a good 6 full episodes amd the Fake Namek thing was a boring, pointless filler arc beyond setting up Vegeta was going to Namek. DBZ has a lot of in between arc content that was like that.

The thing about Krillin and both his Destructo Disc and Kamehameha is that his is more technical and more efficient.
While everyone D Disc is throwing a flatten ki blast like a spinning saw, Krillin is spinning two balls of ki at higher speeds. He could essentially cut everyone he ever fights in half if the move wasn't tied to his confidence and willpower.
His Kamehameha type you'll see later on in the series after a stroke of 'good luck'.
Poor Krillin. Just needs to believe in himself more 😊

Ok, time for explanations...
At the end of Kai, the character that said, "This has how many subscribers?" is the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh. Created by Martin Billany, YGO The Abridged Series was the first parody series to actually be called abridged and inspired many others, including this one. Martin Billany is actually the voice of the narrator here and the voice of an upcoming character that I'll point out next time.
Carrying on with YGO Abridged, the jokes, "it's funny because Wang means penis" and "play a children's card game" are both references to that.
The live-action person at the end of episode 12 is Scott Frerichs, founder, writer, and editor of the show, as well as voices of (up to this point)...not many characters so far. He was the voice of Raditz's space pod, the demon who introduced Goku to Snake Way, the disclaimer at the start of every episode, and the talking cat (named Korin, he'll be important later) at the start of episode 11.
Since you guys are doing these 2 at a time, and have a fairly quick release schedule, I'll make this recommendation now: Movie 3, Christmas Tree of Might, takes place between episodes 19 and 20, so that's where you're gonna wanna watch it at that time.
Finally, I'll let you know that the opening disclaimer, after episode 14, changes each episode and start to becoming additional jokes themselves, so i recommend leaving them in.

Congratulations! You made through the first season of this show which was very dated and actually kinda painful to watch in comparison to the story arcs that are coming next. It only gets better from here.
Edit: Also, Mr. Popo(The creepy guy) isn't like that in the show at all, he's actually really sweet and kind. They just completely changed his character.

Funniest ep 12 is and man love Bulma undie scene and those fake german aliens
To explain the fake namek stuff. The fake Namekian's voices are based off 2 characters from Aqua Team Hungerforce. As for the card game thing. The guy who did Yugioh Abridged had previously voiced a duo based off the same Aqua Team characters, so they were touching base with that joke.
Fun fact about Chi Chis(Gohan’s mom) voice actress became a professional voice actress and does professional dubs for anime’s now

Basically episode 12 they tried to condense like 8 episodes of filler. I will just say this is the last weak episode of the entire series. All uphill from here.

Fake Namek is widely regarded as the worst filler arc in the series. TFS did what they could but even they have their limits

1 with the Invisible Spaceship and 4.5 on Fake Planet Namek.
Later on they even going to skip an entire 9 Episode Filler Story Arc with a 1 Minute conversation :)
Snake-Way was part of a 10 Episode Filler streak, which they also reduced to 1 Episode.
That’s so crazy how many filler episodes the original series had. 😯
While Yancha death is played for laughs in the Abridged and later in main the show (for real) in the anime was a scene where Bulma, Roshi and Krillin are picking up their friends bodies, on their way back Bulma starts crying for Yancha sense at that point he has her boyfriend.

Since you guys are new to Dragon Ball the gag with mister Popo on this parody is that he’s super evil when in the manga and anime he’s the nicest guy around.
He is deceptively strong but he never raises a hand to anyone. Also he’s a killer cook.

Dragon Ball Z Kai is a real series, it's essentially the original Dragon Ball Z series but with the Filler episodes cut out (like the fake Namek Arc) so it's more Manga accurate and shorter compared to original Z, and is a better English Dub, it's actually how I saw the series and it's really good

In the recap, the last scene had Yugi Moto from Yu-Gi-Oh. Littlekuriboh, who plays several roles on Dragon Ball Z Abridged, created Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series, which I believe predates DBZA and didn’t have as many followers as DBZA. It’s a good series in its own right, too, but isn’t necessarily as relatable as DBZA because more people are familiar with DBZ.
