I live in England and as a child I begged my parents to buy me a banjo for Christmas, which they did. From then on I couldn't wait to get home from school to sing and play my banjo, sitting in a tree in my back garden. How weird that I'm now in my fifties and I've just discovered that the music I loved was from the Appalacian mountains. I had no clue back then and I don't know what influenced me. It's just beautiful that's all I know.
America.....you have something very special in this young man, who pays homage to a bluegrass legend in his heart, fingers, and words. Good to see some of the younger generation keeps the older generation living, along with a vital part of Americas history. God bless you all the way from Australia.
Nice to see the appreciation for this music! Grew up in the backwoods of the blue ridge so this music is deeply important to me. Cheers to both of y'all!
B H, I’m also from the land of oz, As of 18 months ago never new much about bluegrass or had ever heard of billy Strings, absolutely amazing musician and my favourite style of music now, He was a big influence on getting me through the agony of those last 18 months living in communist Victoria Australia. I even emailed Thompson Guitars to buy the Billy Strings limited guitar , but due to $ exchange rate, way out of my price range. But he has opened my eyes to all the fantastic Musicians in this genre, Molly Tuttle also spring to mind. One day soon I’d love to travel to the states and go to a bluegrass festival featuring all these wonderful muso’s. Once our f#*ked up NWO government let’s me travel. God bless to all in the states

Need some help in a prayer or two. Bringing these old souls back to us, into our world if at all possible. I go to the pioneer cemeteries I can find , first by name you can find, then pray a general prayer for all the souls to be released as soon as possible into our hurting world. Then sit back between finds, & behold the manner in which they appear in there own way. Some cemetery do only exist on paper, others not even paperwork re-calls them. 😢😮 I think the cause is worth the time here & their. The world is begging for a change.. Get -r- done ! 😅
Doc was my # 1 when I first learned acoustic. Loved him. Saw him live twice. Second time he took a flat picking break and was so enthusiastic he fell over backwards in his chair. Never missed a beat. Finished the song laying back with his legs in the air . Stunning.
Half of my family is from the Appalachian Mountain of Mitchell County, NC. This music just fills my soul, plum full! You fellas are so talented and I Love Every Note! Stunning, Amazing flat picking! Thank You, Billy, Billy, Drew and Royal! You're all, Masters of your instruments! This is the best Bluegrass, since Doc, Lester and Earl. Let us not forget Dear Ole, Wayne Henderson too. ))) THANK YOU ALL,, for this Precious TREASURE and for keeping it Alive ! This brings big tears to my eyes, when I think of our Beloved Doc and Merle.
66 year old retired rocker here... would occasionally listen and marvel at bluegrass... but THIS my friend commands respect for well rounded talent! WOW... I can listen to this for HOURS ON END!
I grow up seeing The Tony Rice Unit several times a year and he was why I feel in love with this type music. Doc Watson lived locally and I met him numerous times. It is so awesome Billy will give the love of this music to the next generation!! He is the next Clarence White in my opinion!!
I sang “Down in the Valley” at the beginning of my wedding ceremony after hearing this, such a perfect song that was able to relate to everyone in the audience and get everyone on the same page and establish the reverence for the ceremony. Thank you Billy for keeping it alive.
I love watching how he just falls into the role, and he does it so flawless.. He was clearly born to lead this kind of amazing sound into the future. Classic, and ever evolving to a more beautiful and modern form. I simply love listening to people with true passion, playing and singing what they love, as much as I love enjoying listening to it. This is the definition of passion, and commitment
This music should "NEVER" be forgotten. Hillbilly music kinda grew on me' When I heard it on the movie Bonnie - n - Clyde, when I was a little punk kid. (Foggy Mountain Breakdown) is probably my favorite.
Bluegrass is amazing cultural music, it’s a shame Hollywood movies have portrayed this music in such a negative way. I’m 32 and I’ve cut Hollywood from my American life for good for many reasons.
Unbelievable. These days, music companies are clamoring over the Morgan Wallen’s of the world, but this guy goes unnoticed. This is three years old as I’m watching it. I hope success comes to this man in whatever way he wants it.
Imagine a boy, in rural Hungary, discovering Doc Watson... How lucky I was, having an internet connection...you might never know. Thank you for this upload. It was a pleasure for my ears.
Doc already knew. Like, he didn't know the future...But he knew that the songs were going to live on. And he is delighted to see and hear this particular performance.
I think I saw Doc Watson, once, some 40 years ago. Alas, I was quite enamored, at the time, with the much more popular Bakersfield, Texas, and Outlaw sounds; so, my memory of it is hazy. But, I gotta say, I really enjoy hearing this kid and his band mates play.
I saw Doc in Canada years ago. You could just feel the love he put into his music. He did Shady Grove by himself. I thought it was because it was too personal. As they were walking off stage, someone near me shoulted, "We Love you, Doc!" and he stopped for a second and seem to look right at the guy and smiled.
Have you heard the concert he played with his dad? It's very rootsy bluegrass (iirc his dad does most of the singing). Not as slick as this but a great watch. Write this cause I remember thinking at the time "if they recorded an album together, I'd buy it"...
He did an album called Fiddle Tune X with a gentleman named Don Julin. It is very much in the vein of Doc Watson and David Grisman. Most of the songs on that album are ones that Doc has done.
I am not usually the fangirl type but Billy has changed that, I am so in love with his talent, his voice, his passion! I don't care what anyone says 🤷 he is truly the greatest guitarist of all time! 🐐 bmfs 💘 baby! 💘
You could make a lot of really bad choices among the popular performers of today’s world. It says something about your character in your choice. I hope Billy has a long brilliant career so when your my age (70’s) you can look back and proudly say “l liked him back in the 20’s”.
I noticed throughout this that there seems to be no ones ego interfering. Everyone appears to be an equal participant in every way. Of course this will happen for the bassist later I’m sure Christ he’s learning on the fly here which is amazing. But this seems to be a quality I noticed with doc too. He was always telling this one to pick or that one to go. He never had to be the center of attention 24/7. He recognized that everyone had talent. Some may have been starting their journey but they all had worth to him. This isn’t something you see in rock bands. The lead singer is the prima Donna always. It’s a gracious welcoming that you feel during these collaborations that happen with bluegrass and folk music that just make you feel like your little space in the world is better for having listened to it. I don’t know if I’m making sense 😂
It's very special with Mosat (sp) learning on the fly. I'm fortunate that I have been onto these guys for several years and have traveled the country to be there. Much love.
I have been listening to Billy and the boys since the middle of the pandemic when I tripped over billy, dust in a baggie, on RUclips. Hook on him worse than I ever was on meth. I would play these longer concerts and be there stuck to the TV. Watching the videos. Couldn't just listen. Had to watch. I went on the Billy quest.. I think the first one I heard was in the tacky house with the gut in the t-shirt and flip flops.. wow what a baby he was. I proceeded to listen to all of it. Lost a man that didn't get it. Course he didn't get much. Good riddance. Thanks Billy. I had a daughter that would be your age, y'all were two weeks and a million years apart. She passed away at the very beginning of the pandemic... Dec.8th 2019. At twenty seven, I was devastated to say the least. I am still. Will always be pissed that my kid had the ADUCITY TO BEAT me the heaven. I always will be.
I got my first guitar at 15, and I taught myself how to play. I thought I was good, sometimes real good. I hear Billy play 1 song and I'm like---50 years and I'm ready to put down this guitar and just go back to pickin' my nose. Go get 'em Billy!
Think positive. Don't quit. I played piano for years, then stopped. Can't even read music anymore. I'm 66 now & gonna try the harmonica. What the heck🙏🏼😊
I pity anyone who could thumbs down this set, the future of bluegrass and roots music is in fine hands. Considering Billy's tenuous beginnings, his professional career is a testament to focus, hard work and determination. I know his father imbued the respect and love of the music through his childhood,,, what kind of pride his family must have !! So glad the RUclips engine brought this up, I've watched many dozens of Billy videos, this is certainly a top contender, thank you to the group that filmed and produced this.
Does anyone know when this recorded? Had to be a few years back judging from the lack of ink on his arms. I saw him at DelFest and Gray Fox last year. He was the artist in residence at Gray Fox. I guess that just mean he played with everyone! He also joined a lot of the bands at DelFest. He is amazingly adaptable, every time he came on stage it sounded as if he had been playing with who ever he was with for years. He is a unique talent. In festivals full of great bluegrass musicians he stood taller than the others. And he isn’t only bluegrass. Check out his Dead covers,
@@thomasstein1245 My pleasure Thomas. I keep hoping Billy and the boys come up to Canada when things get back to some version of normal. Been wanting to see him live since I first became aware of his music 3yrs ago. It would be cool if they did a whole show of Dead tunes some day. Love their Wharf Rat.
@@keithlambert6217 your comment is hard to understand. Maybe you should watch the whole thing from start to finish. This set was an afterthought from the people in charge. Royal learned each song on the fly.
Roots music has great musicians who are more in it for the love than the fame. The roots of this music go back in various stages a couple of thousand years (as witnessed by the similar music in long separated Celtic populations in Europe).
And God has blessed us with ears to hear these young men play, I was fortunate enough to see them play at Mars Hall in Huntsville AL right before the covid "pandemic" closed everything down, January 23rd 2020, a night I will remember and tell my grandson stories about!
Billy and the band are something else . His understanding of the history of flat pickin guitar is impressive.Billys dad taught him well . Run with it son .

Brings up memories of when I was a child in the sixties while a new music was being born in rock there was an older family music that continued on to this day through young men like these. I'm reunited with my familys past thank you Billy
Billy can bring you back to the beginnings of Bluegrass and he also has his own music that he wrote himself. He is probably the best artist in the musical world.
Billy’s father raised him with a guitar since a toddler. Other videos are great. A show with him and his dad playing is so good. His father is so proud. He’s wearing a Billy Strings hat. Also played with Tommy Emanuel. Tommy wouldn’t play with just anyone. He’s a living legend!

Thanks from Louisiana! Billy is leading a Bluegrass revival. Cheers P[>
Nice to see the appreciation for this music! Grew up in the backwoods of the blue ridge so this music is deeply important to me. Cheers to both of y'all!
You can find a set he did with the incredible Aussie Tommy Emmanuel.
St Kilda, me...yes!
B H,
I’m also from the land of oz,
As of 18 months ago never new much about bluegrass or had ever heard of billy Strings, absolutely amazing musician and my favourite style of music now,
He was a big influence on getting me through the agony of those last 18 months living in communist Victoria Australia.
I even emailed Thompson Guitars to buy the Billy Strings limited guitar , but due to $ exchange rate, way out of my price range.
But he has opened my eyes to all the fantastic Musicians in this genre,
Molly Tuttle also spring to mind.
One day soon I’d love to travel to the states and go to a bluegrass festival featuring all these wonderful muso’s.
Once our f#*ked up NWO government let’s me travel.
God bless to all in the states
Im 73 and been playing Bluegrass for 45 years, but Billy Strings only the last 10 years! Aint that crazy? God bless Billy and them boys!
Billy has been picking since he was 3 years old. I believe he is 30 now but younger in this video. That kinda talent doesn’t happen in 10 years but he is still a freak of nature
Hers thy secret: Iffin you ain’t got the feelin you will only be so good ( stiff Sounding ) this is sole . Food . Hell jump in and hang on , at least that’s what porter said . lol 😊
You're probably a great fan of Willy Nelson? ( Who isn't? Though I'm more into Brasilian jazz myself; Jobim f.e.) Stay safe!
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY THIS BOY CAN PICK!!!!! DOC WOULD BE PROUD!!
Imagine if he picked plugged into the wall of sound !! We would be slappin our overall clad knees for miles haha

I'm 75 years old, and when I was 16, my grandparents took me downtown Mpls. (on a bus no less) to the Guthrie Theater to see Doc Watson! He was so awesome, and I still have the program from that time. It is a precious memory. He'd be so proud of you Billy!! You're amazing!
Im mid 30's and i enjoyed reading your comment and imagining myself back in that time. It's very cool that you still have the program! Thank you for sharing 🙏
I'm imagining the cars in traffic during that bus ride. Was it a hot day? In my mind it was.
I’m amazed that there are steadfast bluegrass fans that don’t actually like Billy Strings.
If!
If I could, I would keep pushing the thumbs up button for this whole performance.
1 to 5 stars for like, agreed a 5
Doc was my # 1 when I first learned acoustic.
How can you not fall in Love with this wonderful Music?
I can't not
It Really hits the SMILE button!...doesn't it?
He's also just a great story teller. He honors the past and puts his modern spin in. Amazing performer!
66 year old retired rocker here... would occasionally listen and marvel at bluegrass... but THIS my friend commands respect for well rounded talent! WOW... I can listen to this for HOURS ON END!

We've lost Doc, but gained Billy. Amazing musicians.
Right on, bro. Very good point.

It's great to hear youngsters like Billy Strings carry the torch of this priceless AMERICAN music that should never be forgotten!

When a boy grows up with a Dad, the results can be amazing and here we are.
Imagine a boy, in rural Hungary, discovering Doc Watson... How lucky I was, having an internet connection...you might never know.
Thank you for this upload. It was a pleasure for my ears.
If Doc Watson heard this... his chest would swell with pride and he would have that great smile that went from ear to ear.....
Wood_Strings_Voice_Music Doc would grab a guitar and join in!
He's conducting from just beyond the veil. That's why Billy has his eyes closed.
Doc already knew. Like, he didn't know the future...But he knew that the songs were going to live on. And he is delighted to see and hear this particular performance.
One of the best sets I've ever listened to... so enjoyable to hear Billy's energy and passion for Doc's style of playing.
Timeless!!!
You bet! Nice to here that Doc isn't forgotten and has young talent respecting his greatness.
@@emiller9426, Billy will be known as the next Doc Watson in his time. He is just starting out, such a young talent.
Good god it’s fricking the best I’ve heard in 65 frickin years!
This is like gold flowing through my ears unto my soul! My cup filleth up 👊🫀🍻
Your comment is pure poetry. I feel that way.
What a group /band of country/bluegrass musicians. WOW, could listen to them repeatedly.
If Billy recorded an album dedicated to Doc I would buy it
Have you heard the concert he played with his dad? It's very rootsy bluegrass (iirc his dad does most of the singing). Not as slick as this but a great watch. Write this cause I remember thinking at the time "if they recorded an album together, I'd buy it"...
I think this is good enough till he does!
He did an album called Fiddle Tune X with a gentleman named Don Julin. It is very much in the vein of Doc Watson and David Grisman. Most of the songs on that album are ones that Doc has done.
I hadn't realized before what a historian Billy is, and what a natural story teller.
The whole band is amazing! Billy is phenomenally talented.
Yes, Billy Strings is amazing and he will get more talented as he keeps playing.
He is certainly among the best ever.
Billy is such a "Doc head" lol. He is so wholesome and really just so glad he has introduced me to his legendary inspirations!
That bass player knows what's up
I noticed throughout this that there seems to be no ones ego interfering.
That’s what I like about Bluegrass. There is no spotlight..
Then you didn't notice the two times the mandolin player messed up
It's very special with Mosat (sp) learning on the fly. I'm fortunate that I have been onto these guys for several years and have traveled the country to be there. Much love.
@@glennblevins damn you're such a pro brah
Doc was all about the music! Humble man! He did wind up standing out but not because he tried......it just came natural.
Doc Watson lives on
I have been listening to Billy and the boys since the middle of the pandemic when I tripped over billy, dust in a baggie, on RUclips.
That's funny man. Seen Doc and Billy
Check out his Dead covers,
Mmmm

Roots music has great musicians who are more in it for the love than the fame. The roots of this music go back in various stages a couple of thousand years (as witnessed by the similar music in long separated Celtic populations in Europe).

This music got me through one of the hardest, darkest times of my life. Thanks
Billy and the band are something else . His understanding of the history of flat pickin guitar is impressive.Billys dad taught him well . Run with it son .
I think that he actually knew Doc Watson. He sounds just like him in every way.
Zen guitar. Completely unconscious when he gets going. What a way to make a living for sure.
You cannot play this fast if you have to think consciously about it. He put in a lot of hours in the woodshed to get there.
Channeling his thoughts to his fingers, like few before him.
Reminds me of BB King in that after his concert was over you were convinced that no one in the whole place had a better time than he did!
I was thinking of BB when I made that comment, Jeff. 🍻
TheOGMikeyP he was not 20 feet from me when I heard him say that he would play music for free if he had to and he would be doing it until the day he died!
