  • We are into shearing season in Scotland and on the farm and the Hebridean sheep are in need of a hair cut.
Incredible border collie dog storm need to round them up so we can get them into the pen and shear them. But things are never that simple what kind of crazy plans do the sheep have in store and two big rams celebrating feel good have a little fight to demonstrate how life they feel

I met a dog who looked like Storm when I was 6, on holiday at a Northumbria beach. She watched our family from the cliff all afternoon, then when my big sister got into trouble in the water, she came off the cliff to tell my mum. Then I fell asleep and when I woke up my dad told me the dog had spent an hour preventing my football from blowing out to sea. Man's best friend indeed.

Yes, it was sad to hear the wool was not usable. But Sean did offer it to anyone who wanted for free! There is a breeder in Michigan whose wool is highly valued. Saw it on The Incredible Dr. Pol who is a vet in mid-Michigan. 💖🇺🇸

I’m not a spinner but I have always loved and appreciated cotton, real wool, silk and velvet products since I was in high school. I’m 71 now and would love a Hebridean wool coat. Or any kind of real wool coat or sweater and I live in Texas lol! It really bothers me that it’s worth nothing. 🥺
Storm is amazing and I really love her!♥️

There are nich communities but he is right... The price of wool is about a fourth of what is was and from a business prospective I understand what he is saying... As pretty as the heberden are he would not make a profit...not even break even...not from a business point of view...and if he sis decide not leave it in... Wool is great for adding life back into the environment and soil... The fleece can be collected by birds for to make homes...

My back is locking up watching you. What a wonderful relationship you have with your dogs. Thanks for keeping the old traditions alive, and praying that one day soon civilization will realize natural is better than manmade and you can turn a profit. If someone took you up on your offer of the free wool, hopefully you can showcase what they made one day in the future.

I think donating the wool to a spinner/weaver is FANTASTIC! Think of the tourists who will pay 💶💷💰for true Scottish artisan items. If you get connected to the right network it’s possible to get a % of the sales🤷‍♀️ who knows? I’d ❤ to see that happen for you guys! A little unexpected money stream is ALWAYS welcomed.

We have a stare game I stare at her & say “wait” then after a few seconds I tell her “ok” & she runs to me from outside. She used to just rush the door before we had the stare game. She loves it & she seems very pleased that she taught me this stare game ha!

Great job! My hubby has been a shearer since he was 15 so over years. He doesn't care to shear Shetlands or mini Southdowns. And you are right wool is basically worthless. Basically less than pennies per pound. Wool that has become felted is the worst😕 It is so funny that they don't recognize each other once shorn. They have to fight it out to reestablish the pecking order😁

So I shave them to get rid of undercoat to help them out plus have 2 large kiddy pools fer their loungin. And ya, they're more wiggly than yer sheep, so I be worthless tired resto day. Could hear your breathin wilst filmin, so I definitely share your "pain". Good one this, Sean, even adding the horn clacks of the guys. Congrats on 100K, Sean. You deserve it!. We have a small market for fiber from spinners here in New Hampshire, USA. We Sell our fiber either by the fleece or by the pound but, like you, don't see a lot of monetary value from it. One thing we have done is to send our fleeces to a Mill in Nova Scotia and have blankets made. We then sell the blankets, and they seem very popular. Off the top of my head I want to say MacAuslan Mills is the place we use. Maybe you have Mill local that could spin up blankets our other items for you. Might be worth looking into.

Looks like some nice weather. Hurray on 100k, it will keep growing. Rather shocked at wool prices being so low. I can’t stand synthetic fibres. They take forever to break down and bad for the environment. I dye my own wool and the fibre community is big here. For people who say they ate allergic to wool, I weave and knit with cotton, bamboo and tencel, sew with linen and cottons. I think this will shift some with a lot of people making the move away from synthetic fibres.

What a shame that wool has low market value now. But I'm not surprised because you're right, synthetics have taken over and are cheap. Personally, I'd like more natural fibers and especially wool in winter but almost impossible to find in the states. I do make sure I get Merino wool socks which I think are raised out West but are expensive. So I hunt for vintage sweaters (jumpers?) :)
