  • Well gets kind of hard to breed fish for profit when the post office USPS keeps killing them in overdue shipments over and over and over. Also lets talk about what happened at Aquashella.

Under no circumstance will I ever consider the USPS for shipping fish. Tried them a few years ago and they killed countless L134 plecos due to delays. In 2020 I switched to UPS Next Day Air only and rarely have an issue. I use Go Shippo to process UPS. They have like a 60% UPS discount, which helps. I had only one loss this past year and that was a shipment of Corydoras Boesemani shipped to south Texas when the temps were 100+. The package was delayed one full day, the cold pack was exhausted, and the fish got too warm. My philosophy is if a buyer is unwilling to pay for Next Day Air, they are not the type of fish keeper I want to do business with. The health and safety of the fish must come first! UPS is not much more than the USPS, when using Go Shippo, but the service is miles apart better in my experience. Then again, I only ship Exotic Plecos and Corydoras. Their price point likely more easily justifies the higher cost of shipping, not to mention Exotic L number Plecos and Corydoras don’t handle shipping well, and transit time is everything. You are making a good decision and your fish would agree. 😉👍

Bingo. My start up isn't even for profit, just for the variety of a fish kept in due care. I'm not going to put mine through that either. They can next day or wait a month or two until I see a temp average I know the fish will jive with.

I agree with Tom, health and safety of the fish first. They dont deserve an ending like that after all the work we put into it. I would only ship with a carrier that guarantees next delivery by 5pm. If the buyer does not like it too bad, you pay to play!

Or we could just demand that the USPS be funded correctly and then it could be infinitely better than any shipping co. ever could be. But that's on us for letting it get bad.

I think it's mostly the southern states and maybe the western plains states. At least over here in the Midwest it works pretty well with not really any hickups. But also as I've said that is completely on us of it works well or if it doesn't.

I am all for next day air. It forces the carrier to process the shipment in a timely manner. It is less stressful for not only the fish, but also the receiver and seller. It just makes sense.

  • @FancyTailAquatics

This is why I quit the hobby months ago and no longer post, no matter selling $40-60 Trios. No one is going to pay next day air for my fish. I would never pay it myself! I am trying to sell off 12 tanks as we speak locally with pure breed guppies.

Unfortunately I think that the USPS terminals and post offices that the packages go thru play a huge role in the time and care that the packages receive. I’m in Southern Indiana and have been using USPS to ship packages every week since the first of the year. Knock on wood I haven’t had an issue yet. Obviously I’m not shipping on the scale you are. I have anywhere from 3-10 packages a week going out. Almost all mine go thru the Louisville Hub. Anything I have sent to the southern states, from Georgia to Texas, have taken at least 1 if not 2 extra days to arrive. I’ve shipped to Puerto Rico and California and had those packages arrive before the ones to the southern states when shipped in the same week.

It's just going to take a bit of time for people to adjust but live fish shipping is what it is and sustained losses just don't cut it. I hate any business doing anything at a loss so I hope we find some balance soon.

It’s unfortunate that people who do sell more inexpensive fish need to resort to these means of shipping. I have always shipped plecos next day air or 2nd day through ups. Guppies have always been good through USPS….until now. 2nd day air is a really nice compromise for those that want to save a bit, and may not make you lose any money. I have had really good success with 2nd day air. Good luck!

Hey Jason thank you for this video and information! I’m getting close to the point of begining to ship fish and other aquatics, I have a smaller operation at this time and I don’t want my 1st shipments to be failures. I’ve ordered quite a few fish that were delivered by usps and I have not had 1 doa as of yet with my ordering.BUT I think you have a great idea of offering both types of shipping and specifying no guarantee on usps 1-3 shipping etc etc…. So glad you had fun at aquashella, I’m gonna try and take a vacation to Orlando for the next one🙂👍🏻

That is bc of FedEx and UPS. Do you realize that we could demand that USPS be better funded and we could demand things like perfect overnight shipping and whatever else we wanted, bc WE are the ones that own it as opposed to FedEx who lobbies to get USPS cut so that they look better while not having to provide a better service

Was watching your site for the calico super red bristle nose, saw them then my niece at college two hours away has been having car trouble ( trip after trip). Finally got back to see your out😫. After friends have been having problems with baby chick orders and it being up state NY 🥶. I think I’ll try in the spring. On the bright side I have been selling a ton of my super red bushy nose locally,I can’t keep up with the demand. My LFS wants every thing I can bring in and asks for more. I guess I’m getting old it’s nice to just walk in with one bag get paid and they take care of me very well ordering any thing I ask for. The only problem I have is when I show up people that are in the store tend to ask a ton of questions. Some times I think it drives the staff nuts because for filtration I always recommend air driven sponge,Ziss, under gravel,or box filter. I’m cheap if I am pumping air into a tank I want it doing the most for my money I can get. Maybe not the best answer money wise for the store but,my feelings are start with air and if you need more get it.
