I was wondering where Toto could find someone to fill Simon Phillips' job...now I know! He's got some amazing chops and plays killer grooves. I just saw play him with Toto 3 days ago and there was nothing lacking "groove wise"
Don't try any of this at home unless you can play triples at 165 BPM with your left hand. Trust me, work your left, then study Carlock's playing. Chops out the WAHZOO!!
Joseph Kalina...i somewhat hear you, but thats just Keith, you know? I'ts like....thats HIS sound. I can close my eyes and know right away when its keith (swing groove) gadd (INCREDIBLE groove and famous-or infamous- triplets in ALL of his solos lol ) and carter beauford's amazing use of off-time high hat grooves, its all about YOUR sound. -Henry
Love that theme Keith's working: amazing how something so simple can make the "clinic" he puts on sound so musical. My only gripe is the damned gate on the the bass drum... cat doesn't get enough credit for his dynamics as it is. Then again, most sound guys have such a tough time miking BDs w/o holes in the reso-heads, so I guess we drummers take what we can get. ;-)
+jamminjuice I play a 20" bass drum with both heads. I love the panic stricken faces of the "sound engineers" when they go to mike the BD. Some have even become downright hostile !! Perhaps it is not entirely their fault. More often than not they have only been trained in only one type of sound and they do their best to fit you into it. I guess they never listened to John Bonham. And yes you are right Keith is a true story teller in this solo....
I have the same kit minus the extra FT. The wrap changes color with different light in a way I have not seen other wraps do. The Brooklyns are awesome. Every time I play out with them people come out of the woodwork to tell me how great they sound.
Great playing as always. But I wish that drum companies would get this “virgin bass drum” and “rim mounts” nonsense out of their heads because we’ve taken a gigantic step backward in terms of hardware and ease of setup. Look at how unstable those tom toms are - they’re moving all over the place because the cymbal stands are overweight and moving all over the place. After watching this Give me the old shell-mounted hardware anytime. Quick to setup and rock solid. Nobody can hear the difference. It’s just a marketing gimmick. I’ve owned both kinds of setup, and stand-mounted toms are a bear to lineup.
16 min. of an uninterrupted Carlock solo, can't thank you enough for that.

I think he brings an added strength and excitement that Simon was not able to provide.

Thanks for compressing the dynamics out the kick drum, '80's' producer sound guy...That's not what it sounds like in the room.
Ya nailed it.

Is this the turquoise color, or is this a different color?
+D Sully It's the oyster wrap. The light just makes it look like turquoise.
+handidrummed oh wow, I notice that now. thanks

ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN WATCHIN NIEL PIERT
that gate on the kick wasn't set so well... great playing keith!!!
Keith sometimes, like this one, is not using gate ( with both complete drumheads and no mic port) for the bass drum.
something might of tipped over if he played any harder
it's a 20".. see more: www.keithcarlock.com/gear.htm
Pretty sure it's a 20.
the only white drummer who could destroy black drummers groove!
