- Alien by Thierry Mugler was created in 2005. This beautiful yet simplistic blend of Jasmine, Amber and Woods is beloved by many. However the acquisition of Mugler Fragrance in 2020 by L'Oreal from the Clarins Fragrance Group (which had produced Mugler perfumes since their inception) has brought about a reformulation of this scent. It's the end of a fragrance era - are Mugler scents still worth buying? Let me know your opinions in the comments section!
As this dries down even more I can tell the old original is performing better and is definitely my favorite of the two. So sad this has been changed - can we all go harass L'Oreal to try and get it back to the original if possible? ;)

I just discovered this perfume! I got a small sample and fell in love. I had been on the hunt for something new as I've outgrown my other scents. I must have been given an old sample because it didn't smell 'green' at all. And now I find out it's been discontinued! 😭 I swear, L'Oreal ruins everything!
I like the new one! It's a little bit fresh/soapy. It's smell so moderate and elegant. The old one was "in your face", strong and heavy, also it's give me a headache. Always hate this perfume.

Kinda surprised you didn't touch on how much ifra has affected this fragrance. It's not that l'oreal is necessarily being greedy or any of the other speculative things you conveyed (which may also be correct). Jasmine grandiflorum is now a restricted ingredient. It is known for being creamy rather than the tea jasmine fragrance we are seeing in newer releases. Ifra updated regs in 2015/2016 which coincides directly when people noticed changes in this fragrance. This has happened to many fragrances once ifra gained traction in 2008. It has happened with oakmoss, rose, lily by 2022 effectively killing the chypre genre as it was previously known.

I totally agree - they should have marketed the new version as a flanker! The new one is much sharper and somewhat soapy. I got a sample of the original (not aware of the new vs old formulation) and fell in love. I immediately purchased a bottle (new formulation) and it smelled like a different perfume when I got it. While both are beautiful, it’s kind of a bummer, especially when the original is such a well loved classic fragrance! Those bottle ARE still to die for, though! 😍
I appreciate that you made this video. You explained everything perfectly. Alien is my favorite perfume of all time. I’ve tried many other perfumes, I continually try other perfumes to see if there are any that will make me fall in love at first sniff like I did with Alien, and to no avail. I have a few other fragrances that are considered not as modern that I know & love such as Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door, Burberry London… but my love for Alien will be forever. The new formulation changed the fragrance a lot. The longevity is poor, the sillage is not even there after maybe a couple of hours, and it smells more fresh than it does rich & warm. The old formulation will always be the best version of this perfume.
I love the new one. Much more wearable in the hot humid weather here. The OG is nauseating. Btw I love your necklace!! Is that amethyst? My favourite crystal and definitely matches Alien 👽 💜💎✨

The old versions of everything is better...poison, opium, rive gauche, ysatis, ... these all used to last the whole day on me, now I can barely smell them and they are not what they used to be...I've yet to find a more modern long lasting perfume...I use First and Bottega Veneta now as they still smell like they always have.
I sprayed a blotter at the shop 3 days ago and put it in a drawer. It is still very strong. I remember how opulent the original was, but the new formulation is quite close. I will buy a bottle.
The only other Mugler perfume I love is Angel Muse.
I loveeeee the new formulation. 💜 It's my favorite perfume and I don't think I will ever find something I love more than OG Alien. Never smelled the original but heard many reviews, and I'm so interested to try it but it's almost impossible to find it where I live so... Also, I don't find the new one soapy at all. But I think they should bring the old version again, I don't undestood why they never do that if there is so many people that love the original. I'm also interested in trying the new Alien Hypersense, I've heard some people say it's like the old version but fruitier or sweeter? Idk but I will surely try that one 🤭😘
The soapiness before the dry down and the lack of the perfume staying all day are my two big gripes with the new formula. I think they’re both good scents and some of the profile changing with the formula was out of loreals control, but the clarins formulas are just overall better. I actually think the newer one is a much less intense version and it wears nicely in the summer whereas the clarins formula with its rich intense deepness is amazing in the winter. But OG for me all the way.

So happy I found this video and comments. I thought I am being crazy bc I felt like the new alien i purchased doesn’t smell like the one I had before. I thought i was maybe being scammed even though i bought it from Boots. I don’t like the new one and cannot wait to use it all. I need the old one back 😢

I love alien! I’m hunting for some originals to see the difference. Do you mind sharing what both of your bottles say on the bottom ex. “Mfd for cfg, Neuilly” (Clarins) roughly from 2011-2015, then Clarins reformulated again around 2016 (that’s when they changed logo on box from “Thierry Mugler “ to “Mugler” and changed bottom of bottle to “mfd for cfg -neuilly- sur seine” and then when L’Oréal bought its now “azzaro”
The new bottle has Luxury Products LLC New York Mugler Azzaro Paris and the old bottle has CFG Neuilly sur-Seine 95300 Pontoise France - both are made in France 🇫🇷
older bottles will also say thierry mugler rather than just mugler and they have the gold claw detailing on the bottom of the bottle too! they removed that before the loreal takeover

The old bottle looks like the OG bottle here, and the OG bottle looks like the new one! Very confusing! It's sold in major pharmacies here. New one has the more "square" top bottle. I love the Jasmine green tea vibe as it's a bit uplifting!

I do remember when Alien came out because I was already a fan of Angel while growing up, I recently got the L'oreal version and somehow find it sickening and I rarely experience that with fragrances although I always wear pretty strong ones so for sure there's something in this reformulation that definitely doesn't agree with me
I also loved Angel. Thats all I wore. Now I dont like the reformulated version. I can tell the difference. So sad.

There are actually two formulations under CFG for Alien. I’m wondering which one you have! Seems like pre-2020 is better either way.

After having enough bottles and looking up the different batch codes (and understanding the timeline and history of the company/who owned the company at the time) is how I put it together. After going through a painful "vintage" phase with both Mugler and Dior, I found like preferred the newer formulas in almost every case. To be honest, I think the hype is in the mind rather than the nose. I'm super sensitive to changes - so much that the best dupes smell very different to my nose. The Alien's were incredibly similar in the dry down. The first 5-10mins was the only consistent way to tell them apart. Unpopular opinion... the newest formulation was the one that lasted the longest on my skin as well, lol. Based on months of comparing vintage to modern... I've decided not to put anymore money into that journey.

the new loreal reformulation of angel is exactly the same, sharper and thinner almost watered down and stripped of that magic heady heavy mugler magic. such a shame. the new alien goddess and angel nova loreal releases aren't even worth commenting on either, a tragic departure from all that thierry mugler perfumes were known and adored for.

I have found my older bottles on ebay and it's important to ask questions and see a pictures of the batch code on the bottle (do a check on the number at checkfresh.com) before you purchase anything to see the year and make sure it's authentic.
Hey i just came across your video. Please look up fake vs real alien videos because it looks like the new one you have is a fake and that could be the difference you are smelling and seeing with the bottle shape change. God bless and i hope this helps. Let me know what you find out please.
There's no way it could be a fake because I purchased it direct from Sephora and they are an authorized seller. The new bottles are shaped this way. Keep in mind that unless the person doing vids about fake vs authentic is a professional, they may not know all the exact details.

I’ve been a buyer and seller on eBay for over 20 years. I’ve had a few occasional issues over the years but buyers are extremely protected on the site. If you get anything that isn’t as described or counterfeit they always help you.
