    Always been blown away by the quality of the texture designs on Doubutsu no Mori N64 - easily some of the best on the system!

    The 240p look honestly adds such a vibe to the game, very reflective of just how it felt to play those games on CRT, the colors in general seemed just a little less saturated and more deep but maybe I’m crazy
    Not to mention the textures were made with N64 in mind so a few of them look a lil more noticeably blurry on the Gamecube

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  Год назад +8

      Exactly, at the end of the day this is a 64 game through its bones, and looks Incredible on the console. You can see the age even on Gamecibe however.

      @jw5803 9 месяцев назад +1

      It's definitely my favorite style, I look back on GC Animal Crossing with such fond feelings and I still play it.
      The CRT color thing might just be because most CRTs have horrible calibration, especially for NTSC. They don't call it "Never the same color twice" for no reason lol
      However lots of them also have hidden developer menus, many of which I had to learn when I dove into CRT Gaming.
      You can actually make your games look SO MUCH BETTER on a CRT with a proper calibration.
      There was some Wii soft mod program I would use on every crt and oh man, getting your black point, colors, contrast, and sharpness dialed in on a CRT is a thing of beauty.
      Then there's the whole subsection of geometry settings on Trinitrons and shit,
      Gotta make sure your circles are circles in all the quadrants of your screen and your lines are straight 😅

    One thing that stuck out to me when playing Animal Forest on my N64’s flash cart is that the N64 struggles to run it at times, it definitely has the slowdown common for games on the console, while the GameCube has no issues running it whatsoever

    The e-reader did have compatibility in the prior AC GameCube before e+. I believe e+ just introduced being able to get a villager to move into your town if you have their card.
    e+ also let you have MULTIPLE private islands, and you don’t need to use the gba connection either! (Which… was a silly idea in the first place and was just an arbitrary paywall to sell the gba cable and gba itself. The island is always accessible whether you connect a gameboy or not. I ended up just using an action replay most of the time so I could just hop onto the ocean and walk to my island and back to skip all the constant saving and the unskippable Kappn songs.)
    One of the craziest things about e+ is that it introduced public work projects which we didn’t see again until New Leaf! A lot of the PWPs in New Leaf are callbacks to the e+ decorations, such as the flower clock, park clock, lamp post, Stonehenge…. Actually almost all of them returned to ACNL.

    • @FauxFaFox
      @FauxFaFox Год назад

      If you haven't connected a GBA the spot where the island should be is just a black void.

    • @sombreset9792
      @sombreset9792 Год назад +1

      @@FauxFaFox I’m pretty sure this isn’t the case. You can actually walk all around the ocean acres if you manage to get on top of the water (though if you travel too far off path, this can freeze the game.)
      I did this to check my islands for the islander I wanted when I made new towns, as it is a lot faster than going through Kappn. Although this works via my method, maybe trying a different way doesn’t work. Idk.
      I have used the gameboy as well, so I’m not sure if there needs to be some initial save data or check or something, but at the very least I’m 1000% certain you can walk to the island if you hop onto the ocean if you’ve been there before with no GBA connected.

    It’s kind of odd to me that Nintendo didn’t upgrade the visuals for animal crossing GameCube. It definitely could of supported more polygons. I do like the style of the game, tho I would of wanted to see what it looked like if they updated the graphics

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  Год назад +8

      It makes sense actually. Nintendo was very very hesitant bringing this to the states, so it didn't make sense for them to update. It wasn't until the success of this we saw two more ports and push for more content.

    I searched for the English-patched ROM. I found it in a 'popular internet library'. The unpatched version was included, and it didn't occur to me I might use it to improve my Japanese. I've played Wild World and New Leaf, but find this has the clearest graphics. I can find the cracks without leaving fruit/shells as markers.
    The thing that's a bit of a pain (challenge?) is the lack of an inbuilt map. One needs to find the town's several maps...without a map.

    Doubutsu no Mori/Animal Forest is definitely one of my favorite games on the N64. It’s amazing just how good this game looks for an N64 game. I bought a copy a few months ago and I’ve been playing tons of it ever since. It’s very interesting seeing some of the differences between the various versions of the game.

    This is a lovely video about info I have always been curious about. I was always peeved that animal forest never came to American N64's and first came to Gamecube, which looked dated on that system and I didn't own a GC until many years later.
    The main problem now is that I still can't read Japanese, despite living in Japan back in 2003, but I wish I had a copy of the game like that with an easily replaceable battery, especially with the FPGA N64's coming out soon. I also really like the old style of Animal Crossing over the newer rolling worlds that gets me motion sick sometimes. The isometric style view has always been how the game should look to me, I got used to the look though on the N3DS I used to have. I have my friends old 3DS after he passed and his animals get very excited when I show up after years to visit.
    I'd also love a video comparing all the different Animal Crossing games so people like myself who haven't played the game in many years can go back and choose one to pick.

    Part of me wishes that there was an English N64 Cartridge (properly translated) of the Japan-exclusive expansion on the GameCube (that adds even more Villagers/Islanders and Bugs/Insects or Fishes than the actual localized GC version already had) titled Animal Forest e+, and that their proper calendar would end at 2099 rather than 2030. That would've made Animal Crossing feel like the best game to ever be playable on a Nintendo 64.
    And that cartridge I wish for it to exist, doesn't necessarily have to be licensed by Nintendo, as long as it imports every possible feature from Animal Forest e+ (with minor exceptions like their GBA modes, unless they could replace it with GBC) while accurately translating it to English. That would make me fantasize it as the best way to conclude the N64's lifespan in 2002 with a HQ game featuring so much fun stuff to do.
    Smash Remix 1.4.1 is an example of how surprisngly possible it is to create a fan-made N64 cartridge with a big handful of features collected into a single-package game! :)
    Sorry if this comment was longer than it needed to be, just stating why I would've been satisfied with Animal Crossing on the N64 only if it had all those 3 important changes (localization, double-expansion, and specifically for the N64).

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  Год назад +1

      Naw you good man I appreciate the comment.
      As for AC N64, N64 after market carts exist so you can use those or an everdrive. Now as for the content...I'm sorry that is impossible. Since AF was ported to Gamecibe, the content was built using the Gamecibe hardware so it's jnlikely it can be brought to its original versions. Sometimes hate to say but it be like that

    You wouldn't call Super Mario Bros on the NES a port of Super Mario Bros, would you?
    Animal Crossing is the port.
