    I have Kobe in my Top 10, and I'm not saying Chill was necessarily right (need a bit more numbers to clarify that) but I don't understand how people on the panel or in the comment section can't get what he was trying to say regarding Defense.
    In a team game, just because a player is more skilled at something doesn't necessarily make him better at it if he doesn't apply it for the context of winning the game for his team.
    For eg, the person who has the best handles in the team does not automatically become the best dribbler for the team if he doesn't actually use his handles to enhance team output. I'd rather have the less skilled dribbler who makes it past 1 guy and uses that space well than a skilled dribbler who cuts past 3 easily but puts himself in an isolated corner at the end.
    So, from how I understood it, Chill was saying that even though Kobe was a better one on one defender, Bird's reading of the game and effective use of team defence enabled his team to defend better as a whole.
    If you want to prove him wrong, saying 'combine both and tell me who is better overall' is definitely NOT the right way to go about it.

    • @ΚώσταςΠαππάς-φ7ζ
      @ΚώσταςΠαππάς-φ7ζ 2 года назад +3

      good point
      I ll try to put it that way.
      Bird had 2 weaknesses in his game. His athleticism was average and he didnt have a good tribble. Why he was so dam good then?
      Give a standard set of skills to any player u choose and then give the same set of skills to Bird. Bird will always find a way to be the more impactful of those 2 players with that same set of skills. He utilized his skills better than anyone else could. His skills may or may not (probably not) have been the best skills any player ever had but he utilized them to 110%.
      Kobe on the other hand didnt have major weaknesses in his game compared to Bird, but those minor weaknesses he did have, there were times that not only he couldnt hide them but he himself even tried to get exposed for those weaknesses. Kobe's problem is that sometimes he was too stubborn to hide his weaknesses.
      In the question what is more important:
      1-1 defense or team defense the answer is simple.
      It is whatever the player who is guarding puts the weight on.
      Bird knowing that he is an average 1-1 defender he put the weight on team defense and he kept hiding his average 1-1 defense.
      Like i said before, Bird had both limitations and weaknesses. It just happened to have the ultimate talent of always hiding those limitations and weaknesses. That was Bird's biggest gift, nothing else.
      What i think Chill was trying to say is that neither team defense or 1-1 defense is more important by default. It simply depends how the players use each of those to their advantage. Whatever of those 2 players use to their advantage can become the most important aspect of defense in general.
      And Bird utilized his skills and certain aspects of the game more effectively to his advantage than Kobe did to his skills.
      This doesnt mean that Bird was a more complete player than Kobe ( i dont think he was) but he was more impactful.
      Imagine being as good a shooter as Curry is. Would u be as impactful as a shooter if u shot only 4-5 3s every game and Ray Allen or Dame shot 8 3s? Skill-wise u would be better shooter than both Dame and Ray Allen but would u be more impactful than any of them?

      @asundelgun3487 Год назад

      @@ΚώσταςΠαππάς-φ7ζthe NBA in the late to mid 2000s was an iso ball type league. Most teams had 1 dominant scorer. They gave him the ball and let him go to work. In Bird's era there was more emphasis on moving the ball around. The top teams back then had two or three all stars players that could get 20 so being able to play team defense at a high level was important. Magic was also a good team defender. But I would say the difference is in order to play good team defense you have to be able to rely on your team as well. From 05-07 Kobe couldn't do that because Smush Parker was the only other solid defender he played with those years.

    Chilltown's refusal to directly answer the simple question of (and obvious answer to) “who was the better OVERALL defender" between Kobe and Bird tells us everything we need to know about his bias toward Kobe. I respect all opinions for what they are, but Chill's opinion sounds like the typical sports media pundit that selectively moves goalposts when evaluating players they like and players they don't for whatever reason, most often for reasons that have more to do with narratives than they do actual talent and effectiveness on the court. This is mostly why sports journalists are so analytic-driven and let their opinions live and die on stats and accolades, which ironically, journalists play a huge role in influencing and sometimes deciding; so, there should be no surprise why journalists place such a high premium on (media-voted) MVPs. Like many sports journalists, it seems that Chilltown's definition of "greatness" places far more value on legacy and resume than it does on actual talent (because when we compare Kobe to Magic, Bird, Duncan, Shaq, and Hakeem SKILL BY SKILL, Kobe's clearly superior, and he has comparably impressive accolades to match, if not exceed, all 5 of those players). My opinion is that, when using a fair, consistent (in its application), and as comprehensive/all-inclusive a criteria as possible, Kobe objectively ranks as high as 3 and as low as 6-7 all-time.

You’re right: it’s all subjective-my opinion as well as yours. My ultimate point is that when most people make these lists, they don’t apply their own criteria consistently when comparing players they like with players they don’t care for quite as much, particularly Chilltown in this instance, and he got called out on it accordingly. When utilizing a detailed criteria, applied equally across the board, it’s difficult to name 7 players that satisfy such an exhaustive criteria (i.e. “check more boxes”) more than Bean; where fans who operate within those parameters in fleshing out their lists rank Kobe on that 3-7 spectrum usually depends largely on the weight those fans assign to a particular metric (stats, skills, longevity, MVPs, championships, scoring titles, All-NBA selections, All-Star Appearances, era, impact, etc.). I agree that Kobe is arguably the most skilled player of all time or definitely up there, but you can't make excuses for his percentages or numbers and just say it's because of "playstyle," "mindset" or his shot selection. He CHOSE to play the game that way and CHOSE to take those tough shots. The more credit to him for being able to play that way and take those shots and knock them down at a fairly efficient rate throughout his prime, but at the end of the day, it's about results, putting up numbers/winning the game. It doesn't matter how the points get scored or how flashy or "skilled" of a manner you think they were scored in, but it's about scoring as many points as possible while being as efficient as possible.
    Now with all that being said, here's where Kobe's skillset shines... Having a player that is versatile and skilled is extremely useful and creates a handful of problems for defenses. It's ultra-valuable to have a player with the ability to solo take over a game when the team's offense is failing. Or have the ability to create his own scoring opportunities from all over the court against the tougher defenses of the Playoffs. This is one of the reasons why Kobe's numbers and play stayed mostly consistent in the Playoffs compared to the regular season. So his wide range of skills, knowledge, and hero ball definitely had its uses at times even though it wasn't always beneficial to his stats.
    So at the end of the day, yes, Kobe is without a doubt almost second to none when it comes to sheer skill and versatility offensively. He's an extremely skilled isolation ball player with an endless amount of skills and knowledge to create his own shot combined with above average NBA athleticism. He's also a guy who's known for hitting extremely tough shots with multiple defenders smothering him as well which definitely comes in handy. His selfishness and ego was a double-edged sword at times and he has selfishly shot his team out of games instead of trusting them and being more of a playmaker, but I'd rank him somewhere within the middle to upper part of the top 10 overall in terms of legacy. Top 3 though in terms of individual talent with an argument for the greatest.

      This might be the most fair summary of this particular viewpoint about Kobe I've ever come across. I appreciate you painting the full picture by acknowledging precisely what makes Kobe one of the greatest of all time, even in spite of his weaknesses as a team player (which, in my opinion, is still a little overstated). What makes Kobe's "play-style" effective in contributing to winning basketball (which is what Chilltown mostly priortizes) isn't talked about nearly enough. Your criticisms against Kobe were fair as well. Respect.

Otherwise 2 rings and 1 MVP, bro would be next to KD. Give LBJ Prime SHAQ and they win 5-7 rings no question. Also, LeBron was just more complete and has way more MVPs and even passed Kobe on the all time scoring list. Kobe played for the Lakers. He had the Jordan stigma follow him. He is propped up higher than he is because of narratives around him. He simply isn't as good as Lebron, Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, etc... He isn't a more effective player on the court. Even the narratives of him being more clutch and hitting big time shots at a better rate than other players don't match up with the stats. There's no legitimate arguments for Kobe being top 3 all time. None. He's not tops in any significant category, he doesn't have the MVPs, doesn't really have the top of the line playoff records, etc. I think Kobe is in that 11,10, 9 range.
