Greetings!! In this video I show y'all how to replace and clean the EGR Valve on your 3.3L or 3.8L Dodge, Chrysler, or Plymouth Minivan. This could also work for pretty much any and all 3.3/3.8L Applications as well. There is a known issue where these EGR Valves go bad and most of the time they'll need to be replaced, although sometimes you can clean them out to preserve them. This should be done every couple years or so anyway as preventative maintenance, because the EGR Valve can get gunked up over the years.

$300 work at the local mechanic shop. that's including the EGR valve and new bolts and caskets. I got the part from online $59.00 + 20min of work and I was up and running ...thanks to this video there are still some people who just love to work on motors and show the people how to do it . Thank you very much. I felt good getting my hands a bit dirty and using some nice craftsman tools out of my Dad's tool box. Nice feeling

Great video. I have done this job 3 times in the last 50,000 miles. The original went at 45,000, replaced with a BWD aftermarket that lasted 2 years ($85), replaced that with a Dorman ($75) which lasted only a month! Finally went back to Mopar ($110), good so far 6 months. Don't waste money on aftermarket, they don't hold up (at least in my experience).

Just turned 84k mile on my 09 T&C 3.8L & replaced this part four time. The 09 has the EGR Value back by th fire wall. I put an old under shirt as a drop cloth below the EGR Valve this time to catch any bolts, gaskets or sockets that might fall. I have dropped all three, and the first thing that you say is oh ****, how an i gong to reach that .

    • @adventureoflinkmk2
      @adventureoflinkmk2  5 лет назад

What happened to make it go through 4 EGR valves? Normally it shouldn't do that unless you got the aftermarket ones...
And good tip on putting a catch rag under the valve! Indeed, when a bolt or something gets lost it is all like F***!!!

Guys, I did this replacement today myself, and this is what I did to make it easier:
1- I took the EGR pipe off.
2- I loosened the upper bolt of the EGR
3- I started to wiggle the EGR(Push forth and back) to make it easy to loosen the lower difficult bolt
4- I bushed the EGR all the way up to have some room to get to the lower bolt
5- I feathered the top of the alternator with a drill so that the I can easily get to the lower bolt and then It would not get stuck on its way out.
I hope this info. is useful.

Even though this video was made 6 years ago I still have reason to believe the headliner has been replaced in this van because that is the best condition headliner I have ever seen in a Town & Country that generation. For some reason they made the crappiest headliners.
I have an 02 with a 3.3 l and for some reason a new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new plug wires three times, new plugs, new coil pack, it tries to stall out intermittently with the brake light and ABS light intermittently going on and off and likes to cut out at take off and for some reason the ABS light conveniently will illuminate at the same time this is occurring. Replaced brake pads and ABS light and brake light at the same time went away for the last month and now it is happening again. I wonder if there is a issue with the booster causing an intermittent vacuum leak. Probably going to try to clean EGR valve this one looks a little different. The one you had in the video looked similar to a Ford as the 3.8 liter in might be slightly different

    • @adventureoflinkmk2

Yes, checking for vaccum leaks is a good idea.. remember it could be anywhere a vaccum is pulled; brake booster, hoses, intake manifold gasket, etc

Taking a lil extra time to clean the tube out while you have it off is good idea. Mine was gunked up pretty bad. This is a periodical maintenance so putting some high temp never seize on the 10mm bolts can't hurt for the next guy that has to clean it.

just curious, did your MPG increase? if not I highly suggest looking at the O2 sensors or even the coil pack. I had this issue and once I changed the sensors and coil pack my MPG went from 12-14MPG to 15-22MPG. Just depends on what kind of driving you do but definitely helped.

Kinda got exasperated with the babble at the beginning, but want to compliment you on how well you explained the procedure. I'm disabled and can't walk anymore, so my wife was going to have her dad come up and change this out. It's been throwing codes and the van has been running rough and using more gas than normal. Anyway, her dad can't make it til this weekend (today is tuesday), so my wife got impatient and went out to the garage and changed it out herself! Kudos to you for the easy to follow directions and tool sizes to be used. :D

My wife and I are professional couriers and do passenger transfer. We own FOUR 2007 Town and Country vans, two with the 3.3 L and two with the 3.8... Our average milage per MONTH is 2,000 per vehicle. The lowest milage is 189k the highest is 239k. I do almost all of my own maintenance and repair on them. The first thing I did was dump the oil pan, scrape and clean the gunk, new pan gasket, and put MOBILE 1 FULL synthetic oil in and use a Mobile 1 filter... (Most cheap filters go into by-pass after about 3,000 miles) I immediately get 2.5 fo 3.5 MPG increase and smother running and idling engine. ( And if you switch to ETHANOL FREE gas, you get ANOTHER 2-3 MPG increase because ETHANOL (a/k/a Alcohol, reduces the detonation impulse, decreasing gas mileage. AND has TWO major negative effects that are even WORSE...Alcohol is a DESICCANT, meaning it draws water, and it eats synthetic and plastic parts. Ask boaters why they buy ethanol free. I bought an EGR valve for one of the vans as it threw a code...The valve has 160k on it so it was due. Didn't think you could disassemble them and clean them ! Going to try it... Wish me luck, and I will save the new one for a really bad one. Thank you for the awesome, concise video !!!

If it runs then I believe the valve is bad. Additionally you can also remove the EGR and start the engine, and it'll run at like 4k rpm. If it starts there ya go

How long did you allow the carb cleaner to stay inside the EGR valve? Did you use a pipe cleaner, toothbrush or any other apparatus to clean inside? Did you clean the EGR tube as well using carb cleaner?

    • @adventureoflinkmk2
      @adventureoflinkmk2  3 месяца назад

Yeah egr tube cleaned justin case.
The pressure from the spray straw was more than enough to get most crud out, however you could use pipe cleaners or toothbrushes, no harm in it imo

And yes. The idea is that non-reusable gaskets are fully crushable or even somewhat crushable. Once crushed, even if you can't see it, it's now junk. So even if you just loosened the bolts and re-tightened them without even removing anything, you likely will have the tiniest microscopic gap due to tiny differences in tightening pattern, tightening torque and exact position of the two parts you're mating. This type of gasket is the entire purpose of its existence: to prevent microscopic gaps.

No check engine light. But my 2006 town and country stalled while turning at a stop light. Oil light came on, then went away. Was able to start it right back and had a rough (poor idling) ride home.
Drove it around the block again at a stop sign while turning, it stalled one more time, oil light again. Let it sit for an hour, disconnected the EGR cable, dusted it off, put it back on. Drove it a couple miles, no issue.
Could the stalling be related to the EGR valve needing to be cleaned, or replaced? I had the EGR code pop a while back and knocked the valve with a hammer to loosen anything up and it went away. Not sure if that worked.
Thanks for the video, I might give it a cleaning tomorrow. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Read a bunch of message boards about stalling and your video seems to answer this issue. Also, I just replaced my starter, could it be a ground issue? Anyone have this issue as well?

Is it wise to cleane the EGR if you don't have any codes . I have a 2004 Chrysler T/C 3.3 V6
which I don't beleive has ever been changed or cleaned. At this time I have 140,000 mi. onit .
It is running a little rough. I have a code P0300 which is a ramdom misfire .But the car seems to run pretty good for its age.
    Thanks Mccreron18

Yes, it would be wise to clean the EGR and even the throttle body, just for preventative maintenance.
As for p0300, that indeed is a random misfire, I'd start by looking at the coils if not the entire ignition system

    EGR DELETE
    From Chrysler...
    NUMBER: 18-026-01
    GROUP: Vehicle
    Performance
    DATE: Nov. 2, 2001
This bulletin is supplied as technical information only and is not an authorization for repair. No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in a retreival system,
or transmitted, in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, or otherwise, without written permission of DaimlerChrysler Corporation.
    SUBJECT:
    EGR System Elimination
    OVERVIEW:
This bulletin provides technical details about the elimination of EGR valves.
    MODELS:
    2002 (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLE WITH A 3.3L OR 3.8L
ENGINE (SALES CODES EGA, EGH, EGM).
    DISCUSSION:
A running change to eliminate the EGR system is being made during the 2002 model year.
The change will be made in steps. First, the EGR will be turned off in the calibration (PCM
software), followed by the removal of the EGR valve. This left a period of time during
which vehicles were built with a non-functioning EGR valve on the engine. The following
information will help to identify and service a functioning versus non-functioning EGR valve:
    • Vehicles with functioning EGR valves.
Vehicles built before September 18, 2001 (MDH 0918XX) at the Windsor Assembly
Plant (”R” in the 11th position of the VIN) and September 14 (MDH 0914XX) at the St.
Louis Assembly Plant (“B” in the 11th position of the VIN) will have functioning EGR
valves. Normal diagnostic and service procedures apply.
    • Vehicles built with non-functioning EGR valves.
Vehicles built after the dates mentioned above through approximately the end of
October, 2001 will have a non-functioning EGR valve on the engine and may or may not
have an EGR vacuum harness. Vehicles built after approximately the end of October,
2001 will not have an EGR valve on the engine. In either case, the vehicle VECI label
will identify the EGR valve “non-functional” and have a dotted line to the EGR valve.
For non-functional EGR equipped vehicles electronic diagnostics will not function,
however, the electrical connection must be maintained if the vehicle has an EGR
vacuum harness (the EGR solenoid must be energized to shut off vacuum flow to
the EGR valve). If the vehicle does not have an EGR vacuum harness the electrical
connector may or may not be disconnected and taped back to the harness.
If a non-functional EGR valve is diagnosed with a problem, the EGR valve must be
removed and cover plates installed, per the following procedure:
    18-026-01 -2-
    PARTS REQUIRED:
    Qty. Part No. Description
1 04591227 Plate, EGR Cover, Head
1 05277723 Gasket, EGR Cover, Head
2 06503692 Screw Cover Plate, Head
1 04861623AA Plate, EGR Cover, Intake Manifold
1 03580172 Plug, EGR Vacuum Intake Manifold
    REPAIR PROCEDURE:
NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT AFTER SEPTEMBER
18, 2001 (MDH 0918XX) AT THE WINDSOR ASSEMBLY PLANT (“R” IN THE
11TH POSITION OF THE VIN) AND SEPTEMBER 14 (MDH 0914XX) AT THE ST.
LOUIS ASSEMBLY PLANT (“B” IN THE 11TH POSITION OF THE VIN) WITH
NON-FUNCTIONING EGR VALVES AND AN EGR VALVE PROBLEM .
    1. Remove the two screws holding the EGR tube to the upper intake manifold, and save
for reuse (the silicone sealing ring will remain on the intake manifold).
    2. Disconnect EGR vacuum connector from nipple on upper intake manifold (if present).
    3. Remove the entire EGR valve assembly with adaptor base from the
    cylinder head including EGR tube.
    4. Install EGR cover plate, p/n 04861623AA, onto upper intake manifold using the two
screws saved in Step 1. Ensure that the words “THIS SIDE UP” are visible on the
cover plate after installation. Tighten screws to 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.).
    5. Install EGR cover plate onto the cylinder head, using gasket, p/n 05277723,
and screws, p/n 06503692. Tighten to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.).
    6. Install cap, p/n 03580172, onto EGR vacuum nipple on upper intake manifold.
    7. If the EGR electrical connector is not already taped back to the
wire harness tape it to the harness.
    POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
    TIME ALLOWANCE:
    Labor Operation No: Description Amount
