    I think the A/B amp is a good choice as when an active speaker fails it's generally the electronics not the driver itself.

    At the end of the day if you want decent movie performance from a sub you tend to lean on SVS Subs which give you all the out of control neanderthal level bass. If you want a sub to behave itself and perform sensibly you go for REL i / X series. I have tried playing music with HT subs numerous times and they are slow and laggy and cant keep up which ultimately makes them useless other than for making loud noises... reminds me of Anchorman "Loud Noises !!!" :)

    I have a pair of the REL S5 SHO 12" subs from the line above the T series and love them, MSRP for them is supposed to be $2599 each but I got them for $2000 for the pair when my local HiFi store took them in on trade. They let them go for so cheap because the grilles were ripped up by the previous owner's cats even though the subs themselves are in great shape and I would never use the grilles anyway. I wish I could post a pic with this comment .

      Have you heard both the t series and the s series. I am looking to get a s3 as their prices have fallen as low as €800, and they extend significantly lower than any t series sub. But do you find them to still be more technically accomplished.

    REL subwoofers for movies should be connected high level AND .1/LFE. For digital audio correction like Audyssey (not sure about the others) you disconnect the high level before running the correction then reconnect afterwards.
    I've gotten great movie performance from two T/7i's. They are killer for music provided you don't got thru a home theater AVR or Processor. Connect directly to the DAC and use a passive XLR switch (Douk Nobsound 3-IN-1-OUT XLR Audio Switch) or switches. Or even better, use a high end two channel preamplifier with Home Theater Bypass.

    Great review! I'd be interested in seeing how the REL S510/S812 would perform comparatively. According to REL they have learned a lot from the HT series and integrated some tech from it in their new S series. Are they the perfect mix between refinement and HT slam albeit at a higher price point? I'd love to find out.

      I've got both; 2x S510 for mains and 2x T9x for surrounds. Both for music (connected with high-level) and regular connection for LFE.
      S510s are a different class compared to T9x for both music AND HT... Have priority for music? take S510 and mostly HT? take S812 ... they go just that bit lower.

But you should either combined the yellow and red per side (to positive) and connect the black to negative (unless its a differential or class d amp) where the black should go to chassis. I found the T9/x lacking in most uses and returned it. In my room and my system, it didn't do it for me. On some tracks it sounded good, some others where I knew there was some base notes, it just didn't deliver. It is a small box and only does 27HZ, and fit/finish/looks are great, but there's far better subs for that $ in my view. It may still be a good choice for those with limited space, small rooms, etc, was not the fight fit for me. My beloved Velodyne HGS 12 is out for repair so decided to try some new subs. So far, Velodyne still my favorite, and to be fair, was 2k 20 years ago and still one of best subs out there. They have something of a cult following. I am trying a Rythmik FM8 now and like it much more than the Rel, and it's less $ to boot.

    I use a pair of the small T Zeros to augment my stand mounted MA Radius 90s. The MAs are small and very stylish on their dedicated stands. It was REL that advised me to pair with their smallest sub and the special cable to ensure a smooth transition at between 80 and 100 hz where the MAs fall off. They are wired as a stereo pair directly connected to the left and right speakers. In my medium sized lounge 20 x 12ft they are excellent. They are also connected to my Marantz AV amp for 5.2

    • @andrewcrossley2448
      @andrewcrossley2448 Год назад

      @@Birmingham_racing fine for me as they go down to about 35hz. I have a Marantz system with a 1711 linked to my Sky Q and the front set up is a hifi system with the Marantz 8006. The rear speakers are same Radius 90s and the centre is also a radius series. I am about to upgrade my front pair with the excellent AE500s on solidsteel stands. That’s a very good sound match to the 8006 and vinyl or CD. Whether I then use the R90s as Atmos speakers is not certain as yet as they are possibly to good for that. The AE upgrade is for large scale classical music especially choral. The R90s do a good effort but their small size limits the amount of air they can push out. The AE soundstage is superb - did an extensive demo against the larger 509s and prefer the accuracy of the 500s. I may shift one T Zero into my study to work with my new Ruark M1 mk2s. They are excellent but slightly lacking in bottom end. However the study is small (10 x 8ft) and so may not be big enough to generate the deep wavelengths needed.
      The key point many people miss is large sub base units in most lounges cannot generate the LFs anyway. If my lounge was say 30 by 15ft I get a T7 or 9x set up. My house is detached and well insulated sound wise. Most people by giant boomy subs and annoy their neighbours…

  • @John-hl6er

    Do love Rel subs. I demo’d the last generation of this sub (t9i) next to their s3 sho and they excel at nuance and subtlety. It’s a sightly different experience to the full on bone rattling sound you get from some other brands, but once you live with it for a while it’s actually hard to go back. Many other bigger bad more powerful subs now sound quite crude to me and I miss that sophisticated musical sound. They can really stir you when a movies musical score kicks in, whether it’s James Bond, Harry Potter or Star Trek.
    Definitely a sound for the long term that you appreciate more and more as time goes on.

    • @En_Joshi-Godrez
      @En_Joshi-Godrez 3 года назад

      Did you find there was was a appreciable difference between the the s3 and the t9i. I know the s3 can go significantly lower, but it is one generation behind the t9i, though one higher up in the product listing. I have seen them go for as low as €800 used, so I am very tempted to buy one.

    • @John-hl6er
      @John-hl6er 3 года назад +1

      They actually sound quite different. The T9i is more fun and the s3 is drier, but easier to integrate.
      In my living room neither one felt lower on the real world and both were surprisingly powerful IMO

    • @John-hl6er
      @John-hl6er 3 года назад +1

      I should probably as that the s3 sho was better at the subtle stuff, but I actually preferred the t9i when paired at the high level for music. It felt like the music bounced along a bit better.
      The s3 is faster more accurate though, so maybe that is just me liking an “incorrect” sound.

    • @En_Joshi-Godrez

      @@John-hl6er I think its to do with those class a/b amps why the t series sound so different from almost any other subwoofer. I have the same preference as you. I was able to demo the kef kc62, which was also very dry, more analytical, and immensely fast. I listen to more electronic and much faster percussive genres like death and black metal (im very lucky to have the neighbours that I do), which care less for texture and tone, and just need to be as tight as possible even at the cost of sounding realistic. The s3 sounds like a good fit. Thanks for your thoughts.

    inserting these in a quality home theater system would destroy them in no time at all.... I’d suggest these would be great for an acoustic music focused system only.
    Nice presentation.

      Sub 20Hz is rattling territory correct? I assume the best Rel subs just provide more nuanced and textured bass than most high-end full range speakers. Also having a sub or two will enabled the user to place them at the best spot possible (bass crawling/room interaction) whereas full range speakers have to produce both low and higher frequencies from the very same place which may not always be ideal. But I think you are right saying they are intended for music first.

      Rel is quite expensive for a woofer (but solid quality for sure.)

      had many subs in the past including 1 s/812 then 2 f12's, now buying 2 g22's... sparechange is wrong in this case... The rythemik subs easily hold their own against those Rel's. They trade blows... the Rel's do slightly better with dynamics but they do worse as subwoofers since they don't go as low and I find them less accurate (but I think this is a trade-off with dynamics versus servos). I thought both the s812 and the f12 had great and equal tonality for music.
      I am hoping my new, yet undelivered g22's, due to less or practically zero resonance will also be better in every aspect of music as well.
      I have to think that money is exchanging hands for many of these online reviews, even if they say that's not true.
