    Wow Donald! I absolutely love learning how to make chaga. I’m a canning geek and of course gardener. I learned about chaga this summer and have been consuming tea and tincture ever since. I thought I might want to make my own tincture. I have been making tea. After watching your video I feel educated enough to make my own. However it is time consuming and somewhat labor intensive. I most definitely appreciate what goes into making the chaga I purchase. I think I’ll continue to purchase the tincture for right now but your video is very inspiring and educational. It’s now on my “to do” list of future endeavors. Thanks so much for making the video Donald. Namaste.

    For those of you wondering, I've found Chaga in Central Vermont. Every time I've found it, it's on a large old yellow birch tree in or right next to a peat bog. I cover a lot of ground in the winter, and I haven't seen it anywhere else.

    • @Mouse73
      @Mouse73 Год назад

      Yellow birch is a long-lived tree that seems to withstand the parasitic nature of chaga conks better than white (paper) birch, resulting in larger harvests. I'm in Canada and I've harvested two massive conks, the last being about 8 lbs, from yellow birch.

    I've seen people do the liquid extraction first, reusing the chunks 2 or 3 times until the water quits turning dark. Then they dry out the chunks and then make the tincture. I'm curious why it's being done the other way around and having to mix them, seems like a lot of extra trouble .... now that it's over I see! That's great, thanks!

    Thanks Donald! One of the best videos I could find on the subject! I saved it on my playlist on medicinal mushrooms. There was a one hour course where he does a 48 hour cold water extract before the hoy water decoctions to get enzymes out that due when boiled. U wonder if the alcohol wouldn't kill them too! He also says to not hear above 180 F and stay at 175 F. I have never seen alcohol except beer in plastic bottles in France or Germany. I suggest glass instead of petrochemical plastic that dissolves into the liquid. Also better let the decoction cool down before putting through plastic funnel. Just my two cents! Thanks again for this clear video!

      Is vodka the only extraction medium, I would prefer using something else as alcohol has so many negative effects on our body. But I suppose some people may argue an eye dropper of alcohol a day is good for you.

    Most people recommend doing the water extract simmer once for 2 or 3 hours and 4 to 6 weeks in the alcohol.
    3 day water extract and 6 to 8 week alcohol extraction??? Gotta be some potent stuff.

    Hi Donald... first off thank you for taking the time to video this Chaga tincture tutorial. It’s incredibly helpful for the Chaga newbies. I had 2 really important questions. I’ve been dealing with a very serious set of health challenges which caused me to be completely bedridden for many years. I’ve been doing better. But it’s been a very long journey and have found in last 3 years of 12.... I’m finally seeing my body revived by leaving western more and more..., and entering into Eastern holistic moreso. I’ve been feeling very led to start my Chaga journey.
    Can you tell/steer me in the right direction as to why tinctures would be best (or not) for someone like me? Meaning do u personally know of any videos or articles I might read up on to learn the difference?
    Also, are there any Chaga vendors you personally like? I’ve found several but their either way out of my price range OR their Chaga is kindve questionable. I could sure use yours (or others) guidance on this.
    It would be greatly appreciated as I’ve more or less, had to become my own dr after western totally wiping me financially only for me to end up sicker unfortunately. BUT since putting God in the drivers seat..... listening to my intuition and going holistically now.... I finally have enormous hope. Any knowledge you (or others) have would be beyond appreciated.

    Thank you so so much

      chaga is known to improve the immune system and this is what those using chaga hope to gain. I take a daily dose regularly twice a day since the epidemic, and friends have doing the same.
      Depending on where you live chaga is hard to come by locally, I live in the North and Have a Canadian neighbor, who is my source for the mushroom, which grows mostly on white birch trees, and there is plenty up there. finding chaga that is reasonably priced is a task, but you have to weigh the high cost against the cost of good health. good luck my friend--- Don

    Hello, great video! I have subbed because of it. I have a couple questions if you don't mind. I have a reishi/chaga (fills roughly half the jar, soaked) mixture sitting in a mason jar filled with 190proof vodka (with an inch of room at the top) I've had it sitting in a cold closet for 2 years (forgot about it) The first 6 months i would shake it daily, at least weekly. I am wondering if it is still okay to use for the decoction tea, and how would i calculate the decoction tea liquid needed to hit 25% since im using a different proof vodka. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the awesome video content you're supplying

    • @donaldporta
      @donaldporta  4 года назад +2

      that' a tough one since the volume of liquid decreases a lot in two years, and alcohol evaporates faster than the water, you will no longer have 180 proof in your container. the good thing is --- like wine, if you can have 10% alcohol or higher, it will keep without spoiling. However, you can add more 180 proof alcohol to the batch to increase the amount in your jar--- you won't reduce the amount of extracts, that did not evaporate with the alcohol. this will restore your mix close to it's original state and then go back to the original plan. you should have a great extract when done.

    • @JeremyCrow
      @JeremyCrow 4 года назад +2

      @@donaldporta I would assume that the mason jar was tightly closed, in which case there wouldn't be any loss of alcohol from evaporation.

    Can Chaga get moldy/unusable when drying? I have chunks of Chaga that my dad harvested over the summer…at that time knew very little & I put the Chaga on cookie sheets to dry out and also placed some in brown bags. I’ve been nervous ever since after reading that’s not the right way to dry them and will be moldy (also stated to throw away) but I just couldn’t bring myself to do so. I kept them in an airtight mason jar since then. Is it safe to use these? I cannot see any visual mold or any info regarding what mold would look like on chaga.

    Hi Donald,
    I’ve been making chaga double extract for several years and found your video very instructional. So, thank you for putting out quality videos. I was in such a hurry the other day and poured my alcohol and chaga into my pot. On autopilot I added water and started to boil it. Then it hit me with the color and the strong alcohol vapors.
    I quickly separated the alcohol from the chaga and cooled it. What I strained (alcohol extract) has an odd yellow tint and sediment at the bottom. My question can this still be saved? Can I continue to double extraction process even after I boiled the alcohol, chaga and water? Did I ruin the alcohol extract by boiling it?
    I really value your expertise and hope you can advise me on my screw up. Can it be saved. 😢 Thank you

    • @donaldporta
      @donaldporta  Год назад

      the extract will still be in your fluid--- only problem is you may not end up with the 20% alcohol content in the final tinture, this is needed for the preservation of the tinture, Solution is to add more alcohol in the end. not sure how much to add--- just assume that there is no alcohol and then add enough to make it to 20%, you will be over but that won't hurt. Chaga is to rare and hard to come across to throw a batch away.

    Hi Donald, great video, very helpful. My only question is: What percentage of the alcohol/vodka did you lose after straining it from the 2qts of chaga???? I did 6qts (~2lbs chaga and 5.5 qts of vodka) mixture and got almost 2.5qts of alcohol extract drained and squeezed (used a cheesecloth) after 8 weeks of soaking and shaking. So I got about 2.5/5.5 ratio or 45% of the alcohol I put into it. So I lost 55% of the alcohol I put into it. One factor in this may be that my chaga dried out completely in our cellar? Also I was using 80 proof vodka not 100 proof as you did. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

      @donaldporta  2 года назад

      I kept a tight seal on the chaga jar during the 8 months of soaking to reduce the evaporation of alcohol, not sure what that loss was, but it was still in the chaga which the hot water would have recovered what the alcohol pulled from the chaga.

    I guess a cheese cloth may be used to really squeeze out what's left

    • @jrcicirello
      @jrcicirello 8 месяцев назад

      Or you can use a press like I do. Buy cheese cloth bags, place your mushrooms that you want to make tincture from and just pull the bag of mushrooms that have been soaking in 190 proof sugar cane ethanol alcohol and throw it in the press. Just remove the bag and throw it in the pot of water and start the 72 hour 175 degrees temperature. Again, make sure you are storing the bags around in the water every few hours. Repeat the press procedure as you did with the alcohol press to ensure you get all of the polypeptides (water soluble goodness) out of the mushrooms.
      When using a higher proof alcohol (you can use PGA like Everclear) and you will extract more of the polysaccharides. This will make a more concentrated tincture.
      When mixing the water tincture with the alcohol tincture, remember that you are using a 95% alcohol by volume. So the equation is 95/30 = 3.166667. Round down so it will be 3 parts water tincture (add distilled water) to 1 part alcohol tincture to make a 30% alcohol by volume double extraction tincture.
      This is how all the big companies that use fruit bodies only make their tincture. I am not a big company, but this is how we make our tinctures.
      This was a good video, just need to add a few twist so you all can make a better tincture that will give you and your family and friends a healthier tincture.

    Hi Donald, one question: with hot water extraction process, you said add 4 cups of water and then boil and then simmer, next day do same step. • @donaldporta

      next day add 2 cups, simmer to half and repeat same 3rd day. finish with half volume of liquid. the water extract should be the same volume as the alcohol, and when mixed together the final alcohol content should be approximately 20%

    • @donaldporta

      a possibility may be, after the tincture is finished, let the finished batch in an open container until the alcohol evaporates, or better yet warm on a stove to evaporate quicker---however exert caution since alcohol is flammable.and the remaining tincture will need refrigerated since the alcohol was the preservative and it will no longer be present.

There is a farm stand near me that sell little baggies of it for $5 each , about 2 ounces. I get $15 per pound on ebay $25 for ground. Nobody buys that tho. Only the dry conks for $10 per pound or monster conks for $12 per. Obviously they've never tried to bust up a piece of chaga lol
