***EDIT*** Some of my pieces coated with Art Resin have started to show some yellowing. Since making the video, I have changed to Let's Resin. I like working with it, but haven't used it long enough to know how resistant it is to yellowing.
@@liveheir8959 you're welcome. Yes, it's definitely showing the yellow. Nowhere near as bad as the UV though. I've since seen other videos with resin test where Art Resin performs very badly compared to the others like Let's Resin & JDiction.
the yellowed… are still very nice. You notice the difference because you’ve seen the original, but other people, when we are looking at it, we don’t know what was the original color. I learned a long time ago, I’ve been selling jewelry since my 20s, I’m now in my 60s, I sold a lot more mistakes than perfection. Lol. We as artesian’s, always see the flaws… the buyers, don’t notice unless we point it out! I personally learned, if I had 2 to 3 people looking at it and saying oh your resin tarnished or boy is that an ugly color. I pulled the piece. But there was people that bought my flawed items, because they couldn’t figure out how I achieved that color, and they loved the color. Sometimes, people purposely try to achieve that look. I personally liked all your pieces . You make beautiful pieces! Beautiful work💕
Oh yes, everything you have written here, makes tons of sense, heck i couldn't have said it any better myself. I really liked her jewelry pieces, the slightly damaged ones that used to be white are now ivory colored, i love ivory colored jewelry. Also the earrings that had pinkish on one side & more of a salmon color on the other side, could be reversable styles.
Yes, we always see all the flaws, & we are our own worst enemy. Thank you so much. I'm glad you liked my pieces ❤️ Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
I just found this. I'm about to put in an order for more uv resin which I've been using for about 2 years, selling at an outdoor market. I've not noticed yellowing , but I'm now afraid for my newer items. Thanks for your info - your work is gorgeous.
This video was linked on a fb group and I’m so glad! Super informative! Thank you for sharing your discoveries. Your pieces are beautiful…even the yellowed pieces.
Yay! I'm so glad you found it & that it was helpful 😀 Thank you...most of those pieces are pretty old. I much prefer my newer ones...but I love to see my progress as an artist. Thank you for watching, & hope you consider subscribing to my channel. My videos going forward won't have the little light flickers (except a couple I already have recorded). I'm also going to try VERY hard to upload more often ❤️
So many of your pieces are still beautiful. If I didn't know what it looked like before the UV resin yellowed, I would not think anything of it and I would think it was a beautiful tint. The big pendant and the bracelet with the beads that yellowed in the center need a little work, but imho, the rest are still easily sellable.
Thank you very much ❤️ & Thanks for watching 😊 The large necklace I gave to my sister, I think most of the earrings & things I sold on clearance. I still have a few left, but I never put them out for sale 😂
THANK YO SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOR ART AND EXPERIENCE! You see yellowing as an error in your beautiful pieces and I still see beauty on them. Have a great day!
It is VERY DEPENDENT on what brand of UV resin you use. Even in the same brand you have to be careful and test them I’ve had good results with Let’s Resin new formula UV. Also the Limon brand in the pink flowers label bottles have not yellowed. Limon brand has a blue flower label version that yellowed very quickly. But the pink flowers ones havent. So far Let’s Resin new formula has done well.
Oh, I agree that the brand has a lot to do with it. But any of them will yellow eventually...UV or epoxy...it's just the nature of resin. Like you said, you can test them out, but then that could potentially be A LOT of wasted money. Personally, I'd just rather stick with an epoxy that won't yellow anywhere near as quickly. I also forgot to mention in the video that I get much better results, a much nicer, smoother, all around better looking surface with epoxy. The fact that I don't have to deal with the warping of my clay that usually comes with UV resin is another plus for me... although, there are ways around the warping of course. ❤️
Thank you so much for showing this. I am just a beginner in resin jewellery (I'm in the UK) tho I have papercrafted for a long long time. I am so sorry you lost so much of your beautiful jewellery, and I am so grateful to you that I can learn from your experience. Subscribed to keep up with your creations. xx
Awww, such a sweet comment! That's exactly why I made this video. I've since learned that there are some UV resins that don't yellow as fast. When I first started out though, I saw EVERYONE (it seemed) in the polymer clay world using the Chinese resin from Amazon, so I did too. I WISH someone had told me this would happen! As I've said, as many others have said...ANY resin will yellow over time. It just all depends on how fast it happens! Thank you so much for watching & subscribing. I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thank you for your sweet comment 😊 ❤️
A good tip that I heard is that adding a little blue dye to the resin will stave off the yellowing. From what I gather in the YT maker scene, it's only the clear resin that's having issues. Anything that was dyed doesn't seem to be having problems even years later. I assume it's working the same way that adding blue to make your whites whiter and your darks darker?
Yes, I've heard that too. I don't think this would help the resins that yellow really badly (like the ones I used). At least, it doesn't seem like it to me, but I've never tried. Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
@@madebymellyjewelry It sounds like a fun experiment to try! I want to test it out sometime. : D I can't believe I forgot this. From watching restoration vids, it looks like hydrogen proxcide and UV light can reverse yellowing in plastic. But I'm not sure if anyone has tested this with resin.
There is one tip I was given and that’s to add the slightest touch of blue in the resin as this will help with stopping the resin from going yellowing. I just found a picture that I’ve had for 40 years now and the resin has not yellow at all with age, I have no idea what type it is. The only thing I can think of is that it was a bad batch of resin🤔🤔🤔
Hi 👋 I've heard that too...or violet. It won't really stop it from yellowing so much as disguise it (I think so, anyway). No it wasn't just a bad batch of resin, these pieces were made at different times with different brands, & I also had different bottles from each of those brands purchased at different times...hope that made sense. It's really late for me 😆 Anyway, thanks for watching & commenting ❤️❤️❤️
I just started making polymer clay jewelry and actually have had horrible luck with resin. This vid has cemented that it's not for me. Thanks so much for this vid and the update!! The epoxy will take longer to use/make, but will last so much longer! Thanks again!
We’re they all made with the same brand of UV? Some artists have no problem with yellowing. I know how disappointing it must be. That last necklace where the resin no longer matched the seed beads would be a significant problem but many others,if you didn’t see the before pics, were a very pretty bone colour. The change seems to mainly affect the white rather than the rest of the colours. Could you try a different brand of white clay or a different colourant?
Hi 👋 No, they were using different brands of UV Resin. If you could see them in person it's more prominent & also not just the white. So, I don't think the brand of clay would make a difference, really...but who knows? 😆 I also didn't use any pigments or alcohol inks & things...just clay for the most part. Some of them have metal leaf, & some have a bit of acrylic paint...but nothing that should affect the resin. Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
Thanks so much for showing side-by-side comparisons. You’ve thoroughly convinced me not to use it on anything that I don’t want yellowing on. I do a lot of dark wood pieces so the yellowing may not be noticeable. Thanks again.
You are very welcome. Ya know, you can test & try different types to see if they work for you. A lot of people in the comments have recommended the Let's Resin brand UV resin...they've said it doesn't yellow. I haven't tried it though, so IDK. I just wanted to show people what CAN happen. Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
I have watched many videos on epoxy resin and UV resin where they do test pieces on various resins to see which yellow the most. All resins yellow eventually, no matter what the claim. Its finding the right ones to use from the videos i have watched. I am new to clay and resin and some of my first small pyramid pieces of resin art have yellowed in non direct sunlight while others from other resin hasn't. Thank you for the video. I think if you test the uv resin that is right for you before you give up, you will find one that will work for what you need..
Yes, any resin, UV or epoxy will eventually yellow. I'm happy that I switched to epoxy because (I forgot to say in the video) I get a much nicer, all around better finish with the Art Resin. I'd prefer it even if UV resin didn't yellow quicker. I just wanted to inform people that might not know that this can happen. Like I said, I knew resin would yellow (when I first started) I just had NO IDEA it would happen so fast. So far though, I do like the Deep Shine for instances where I just can't use epoxy. Honestly though, as my work, experience, & skills progress I'm trying more & more to create designs that I don't need to use resin. Obviously, it still has its place in my work, I'd just rather avoid it all together when I can. Even some of my Art Resin pieces have started to yellow a tiny bit. Like you said, I could test lots & lots of UV resin, but I'm perfectly happy using epoxy resin when I need resin. I like it much better anyway. I think when a lot of people are starting out, they start out with UV resin, as I did because it just seems easier. Once I tried the Art Resin, i realized that (in my opinion) it's far superior to UV resin for many reasons. But...everyone has to decide what works best for them. ❤️
art resin is actually the worst. there are many artist that tested many different brands and had them outside for 6 months. Art Resin was very yellow. Jdiction is the best, doesn't yellow and the UV resin works great. i live in AZ and have my pieces in the window, and they have done great.
@@madebymellyjewelryKS Resin or Counter Culture DIY both make a great 2 part resin with great UV protection. I guess like anything, we have to see who paid for the tests. Steve McDonald of Steve McDonald Arts and Crafts did a test on several resins. Teexpert held clear better than the ones he tested, even the JDixon he uses. It’s tough to find one, I know.
I totally agree... However I recently tested J dictions low viscosity resin and it started to Yellow slightly within a couple of weeks when set among other pieces that I was testing, however their original formula did well in my testing... At this point with over a year of experience using UV resin follow the one UV resin that I've tested that hasn't yellowed at all is let's resin UV resin believe it or not.
@@alexanderholden82 other people have said in the comments that the Let's Resin is a good UV resin. Now, the Jdiction that you said did well...is it epoxy or UV?
Your items are absolutely beautiful! I am a BIG fan of resin but I have gone to using only Lisa Pavelka. Not sure if it yellows. What I am curious about is how you resin the round bracelet - I am going to look on your channel to see if you have a video :-)
Thank you very much 😊 I'm pretty sure that Lisa's Resin will yellow also. I had a small bottle of it once, & it was yellow as soon as I put it on. The bottle was old, but still...that tells me it will probably yellow fairly easily, although I can't say 100%. No, I don't have a video on that bracelet. I made it long before I ever started my channel. I brushed it on with a brush, rotated it under the light as it cured. I put about 2 coats, sanded it smooth, then added the final coat.
All resin will yellow over time. Depending on the brand and sun/light exposure. It doesn't matter if it is epoxy or uv resin. The only way to minimize it is not to use resin at all, or find a brand that is the lesser yellowing. I feel that using any products on your clay pieces will eventually have issues over time, too.
I did resin art years ago. I found the peices that were exposed to direct sunlight (ie; suncatchers or things left on windowsills) had developed yellowing and the ones not exposed didn't.
Hi. This was a very insightful video! I recently bought two different brands of uv resin for my clay art and was hearing about resin turning yellow over time, I was wondering if the resin art is not in direct sunlight or by the window will it still yellow? I tested my resin on a random art piece and it's been looking great but I worry since I'm making sculptures for Christmas and I don't want them to turn yellow, especially the white ones. I also noticed theres a uv resin called Mr. Resin which is highly recommended by alot of artists for it's durability and longevity but it is a little pricey. Either way I am taking my chances as long as they are not by the sun.
I'm glad the video was helpful. Yes, resin will yellow... eventually...no matter what. Doesn't matter if it's UV or epoxy, doesn't matter if it's in direct sun or not...it will yellow. Now the speed at which it yellows is a different story. The type of resin, the direct sun, those things will affect the speed at which it happens. Direct sunlight will speed up the process. Also, UV resin will yellow faster than epoxy due to the UV activators in the resin. It's all a give & take. As with most things, you just have to figure out if the benefits outweigh the undesirable effects. It depends on what you're using it for too. Im sure your Christmas sculptures turned out beautiful. Hopefully the resin you used will hold up well over time ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for watching & commenting. I hope you decide to stick around for awhile & subscribe ❤️
What about the JDictions brand? I did notice when the item is being cured it turns yellow but after it has cured it is completely clear, is that a good sign?
I've never tried that brand...hadn't even heard of it until people were leaving comments about it. Everyone else says it's good 😊 Thanks for watching 💗
the original Jdiction formula did well in my yellowing test but they're low viscosity formula did not do as well and has a slight yellow tinge. the absolute best I have found in my testing is actually let's resin UV resin.
your jewelry pieces are lovely. We learned that UV Resin doesn't go with polymer clay from watching this video. We believe if your original polymer clay pieces are yellow and cream, when UV resin turns yellow, the jewelry will be enhanced with age it will have a yellow tint.
Thank you. Yes, if the piece is already neutral or warm colors, then the yellowing isn't as much of an issue. Thanks for watching & commenting. I hope you consider subscribing 🥰
Love your channel and thank you for sharing this information, I never knew resin would do that. I prefer Theresa's deep shine and its so easy to apply so I will just stick to using that.
Aww, thank you so much! And thank you for subscribing 😁 I really like the way that the Deep Shine resist yellowing, but I struggle to get a good smooth finish with it. The bangle in the video, I had to apply & sand & reapply a few times to get a really nice finish. All of them have advantages & disadvantages, I guess. Nothing is perfect 🤷
👋 The Deep Shine is guaranteed not to yellow & I sincerely trust Teressa Salgado. If she says it doesn't...I definitely take her at her word. Nothing I've used it on has yellowed so far. However, I still haven't done an actual test, where I put it on white clay & set it out in the sun for a few weeks or months. A lot of people say that UV resin from JDiction & Let's Resin don't yellow, but personally I've never tried them 😊 Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
@@madebymellyjewelry Thanks for the quick answer! Since I'm in Europe, I'd like to wait until Deep Shine is to be proven not to yellow over long time in the sun, before I buy it from that far away ...
JDiction UV resin doesn't yellow. It is actually the only resin I have tried that doesn't totally flip my switch one way or another!😂 Great info! Thanks for sharing!😊❤
Nice! I'm glad you found one more works for you. A lot of people have recommended that one in the comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment ❤️
I've never experienced that in the two years I was doing outdoor events in the direct sunlight with clear items made from uv resin. Maybe it was just the brand I was using.
Wow! Thats really surprising! It had to be the resin you were using. Even so, it will yellow eventually. Any resin will...just the nature of it. I'm so glad yours worked well form you! I tell you, it's so disappointing to have this happen. Thank you so much for watching & for taking the time to comment. I hope you'll subscribe & stick around for a while 😁❤
Thank you for this video. I've been watching lots of resin videos because it looks like a good hobby I can eventually turn into making a few extra dollars with. I'm going to start with the UV..... then if I decide I like it I'll change it up to the other resin. I am getting the lets resin one. I was actually looking to see how using gel nail polish on the pieces with the resin looked when I came across this video!
Awesome! I'm so glad that you found it helpful. I've since watched other videos of resin test & the Let's Resin & JDiction UV resins did great in test. I wish you luck with your new endeavor! Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment ❤️
Also note that some pigments/glitters will change color in the sun. I know pinks are very sensitive to this. The resin will yellow and the pink will wash out, giving the combination a very orange/amber final result.
@@ciomaria6137 that's a good point! Especially with alcohol inks. Alcohol inks fade quite a bit. I think they'll fade over time even if not in the sun. Then again, so will polymer clay in the sun. If you make plant pots, plant identification sticks, decorative bird houses, or just decorative hangings...the colors will fade from being outside in the sun all the time. 💗
I have a lot of polymer clay but I haven't started working with it yet cause I don't have cutters or anything I have been seen people just polish their pieces & not add resin at all. I don't know how it would make it feel if you just do that but it looks like it makes it kinda shine as if it has resin on it. I don't like the feel of unpolished resin though.
Polished & buffed polymer clay has a lovely feel to the touch. Feels extremely sooth. I also love the feeling of clay that has been sanded but not buffed...like a matte finish. It feels very velvety that way. You can achieve a very beautiful shine with sanding & buffing. I think everyone starting out should try it...at least once. It is a lot of work, though. The shine from buffing is beautiful, (especially on.clsys with mica in them) but it's not like resin. It doesn't have that depth that resin does...resin can almost make it look like your clay is under glass 😍 Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
Use glass varnish instead, it's like resin in strength and shine but it's basically gloss varnish that's super clear and easier to apply on small jewellery pieces.
@@chucky6367 yes I use gloss varnish sometimes....just depends on the piece. Floor wax can also be used on polymer clay. My very 1st piece, (a bangle bracelet) I used floor wax & it still looks beautiful after several years 😄 Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
@@sabinalutterova1520 hi 👋 Ya know, that's a good question, but I don't think you could. I just won't set up quickly enough & I think most of it would just run off even if it's in really thin layers. Ive never tried it though, so I can't say for sure. I just resin as an accent for my polymer clay, which is my primary art medium. Some of the actual resin artists might have tried this, but I don't know. It would be a cool experiment for sure! 😃
im using uv nail gel on my 3d flowers in thin coats, only problem is an even cure like i need to turn my flowers in all directions and it takes a long time, literally a couple of hours!! i only have a small uv nail lamp atm though.
@@leetau8429 yes, it does take forever when you have to keep moving a piece. Have you tried putting a mirror underneath your lamp? That will reflect the light back up & will cure places that the light can't reach from the top 😁
It takes it about 24 hrs to cure, depending on the ambient temperature. It gives a much, much nicer finish though, in my opinion, aside from the yellowing issue. The only UV resins I ever used (other than Deep Shine) are the ones from Amazon that everybody else uses. Mainly, the two pictured in the thumbnail. I don't guess they really have a brand name. I'm pretty sure that the ones that yellowed really badly were done with the bottle with the blue, green, & yellow flowers that you see everyone using. Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, please let me know. Thank you for watching 😊
In addition to acrylic turning yellow. Something else that may be on the horizon is that many are now using alcohol inks to color their lay or to paint on clay . . . And while it is extraordinary beautiful, alcohol inks fade quickly and considerably, which means a lot, to where you see hardly any color. I wondered about taking product to shows and displaying them in the sun, and you answered that question. Sorry that happened to you. Some pieces still looked good in their new colors, but yes I would definitely sand them down and re-use them.
@@sharilee4412 I'm so glad it kept you from ruining yours by putting them outside at a show. Yes, alcohol ink fades quickly, so I've heard. Probably faster in the sun, same as resin yellowing. I don't really use alcohol inks or translucent clay, so I don't know from experience. I don't really wanna find out 🤣 Thanks for watching & dropping a comment ❤️
This is so sad. And just a thin coat, too! I do solid epoxy resin pieces, and had considered using UV resin to achieve some special effects, or for things like wire flower petals that need to cure quickly, but I never actually did it since I always suspected this would be the case. Like, you literally CAN'T put a UV inhibitor into UV resin because it would interfere with the curing process. Just be careful with what brand of epoxy you use, some definitely have very good UV inhibitors, others, not so much. Do your research. I have heard Art Resin has a good one, though I do not like how soft/bendy it is (that may be fine for coating polymer clay though), after looking at a lot of yellowing comparison videos i settled on Let's Resin brand, for something that is hard but also yellow resistant, and have been very happy with it. But i also had good luck with Pro Marine's resin. One time, a bunch of clear resin flash cured on me in a cup and I decided to just stick the hunk of it in a window, for months, and i could detect barely any yellowing. I also made some snowflakes that i hung in a window for a month or so this winter, and they are fine.
Good info...thank you. Yes, I heard Art Resin was good with the yellowing. I watched a lot of videos with testing & it held up really well. Although, I've noticed a little bit of yellowing on some pieces I made over a year ago. Some people in the comments are saying Art Resin is one of the worst for yellowing. As we say all resin will yellow EVENTUALLY I just assumed that's why the art resin was starting to yellow a tiny bit. Im glad you mentioned the "bendy" of Art Resin. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong because I wasn't expecting that....but I really like the fact that it's flexible. The polymer clay is flexible, so they work well together. I think I'll try the Let's Resin next time since so many people in the comments have recommended both the epoxy & the UV of theirs. Thank you for watching & thank you for your comment. ❤️
@@madebymellyjewelry I have seen some conflicting info on Art Resin, some older videos show it being an absolute champ when it comes to yellowing, other, more recent ones show it yellowing. It may be they changed their formula, or there was just a bad batch, it's hard to say. Art Resin is designed more for fluid art or for an ultra glossy varnish on paintings, hence the name. It is intended to be poured on to canvas in thin layers, so it's bendyness helps it resist cracking, which i could also see being good for polymer clay. It's just I work with resin poured into molds, so wanted something harder. But that doesn't mean bendyness isn't good in other circumstances! there are specific resin formulas for every need.
@@RayeGunn yeah, it could be that their formula has changed. Yes, using it as a topcoat like I do is very different from casting like you do. As far as I know art resin isn't used for that. I totally agree... everyone that uses resin has different needs & wants...& there are so many different formulas...there's one for all us! 😄
Hi 👋 Yes, I'm talking about UV gel polish top coat. It has to be the type that cures in a light. Regular nail polish (lacquer) is NOT at all compatible with polymer clay. I have no idea which brand I used, though. That was a long time ago. Just be SURE you test it out on some scrap before using it on a finished piece of jewelry. Some of the gel topcoats can yellow just as bad (or worse) as the UV resin. Thank you so much for watching ❤️❤️❤️
I'm curious about using the gel polish as a top coat to protect the UV resin underneath. I know it isn't practical in the manner that you used the resin but I have done quite a few pieces with uv resin & painting with gel polish to build a 3D painting in jewelry & have topped & bottomed them all with the gel top coat. 😂 I have Beetles brand gel polish & used Let's Resin as my uv resin. Time has not tested yet, but I will try to let y'all know after some time has passed.
Thank you. Yeah, as my skills & quality of my work have progressed...Ive gotten away from designs that need resin more & more. I do like the look of resin (2 part) but I want my customers to be able to wear my pieces for years & years. So, I've been doing more sculpted work, & just more clay only designs. Thanks for watching & commenting❤️
The ONLY metal I use is stainless steel, or surgical stainless steel. Not a LOT of difference between the two. Both are hypoallergenic, super strong, won't change color, won't rust, won't tarnish, & won't discolor your skin. I changed to steel a long time ago & I plan to stay with it. I know gold colored metals are really popular right now, but I want my jewelry to last my customers a LONG, LONG, time...& using real gold won't work for my price point. I even prefer it to sterling silver because of the tarnishing of silver. Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
Really?....that doesn't seem to be the popular opinion in the comments here. It's the only 2 part epoxy I've ever used. I like it. One thing is that I love the flexibility of it. Works great with the flexible polymer clay. Although some pieces (made over a yr ago) that haven't sold yet are starting to yellow a tiny bit. Mostly noticable on pieces that have a lot of white in them. The Let's Resin brand is getting a lot of love in the comments. I'll probably try it soon.
Thank you for making this video..I was gonna try some uv resin but I will go ahead and stick with my normal resin I might have to wait overnight but at least it doesn't yellow. It would suck to waste so much time making things and then that happening. sorry it happened to you.
You are very welcome! So glad I helped. What 2 part resin do you use? Art Resin is the only one I've tried so far, but I wouldn't mind experimenting with others. One good thing I've noticed about Art Resin is that is actually stays a bit flexible, so it works great with the flexibility of the clay.
I’m so sorry…that would be very upsetting after all the time you put into making those beautiful pieces…I never thought of that happening…thank you for sharing with us even tho you had to go thru that to do so!!!
@@madebymellyjewelry I love Theresa‘s UV resin too, i haven’t had too many things turn yellow like yours unfortunately did with ither resins but I’m also learning more and more about resin and which ones are good and bad, how long to cure etc. this was a great example of what can happen. I found one that cures really fast and hasn’t turned yellow I’ll have to get the name of it when I get home but definitely a great resin like the brush on one
@@sherbearsclay well, like I said for personal use, it doesn't yellow as quickly. Honestly, my personal ones that I showed in the video aren't my favs, so I don't wear them often. I have a favorite bangle & earrings that I need to sand down & redo because it yellowed....& it's even on really dark colored clay. Other than Deep Shine, the only ones I've used are the Chinese ones that everyone uses. I'm pretty sure they'd all do the same thing, though (except for the Deep Shine).
Some of the white going what I would call bone or antic white. Again if someone e didn't know the original vs the yellowed, the pieces still look nice. Something changing from cool bubble gum pink to a peach orange is ok if orange is your color. I still think that most of them are different but still nice.😊
Aww, thank you so very much. Everything I showed as examples is pretty old...really, some of my first work. I personally feel like my work is quite a different now. I completely understand the sentiment of the items turning yellow. Especially if the item is white. And even though it's unnerving to you that the color items you presented here with the slight yellowing, they actually looked great--except that last one....yikes! I stumbled upon your vid because the uv resins and lamps I'm using aren't curing at all...ugh.. Not sure if the 2-part type of resins are a good option for me. Too impatient with the wait time. Stumbled upon another vid highlighting the Modge Podge dimensional magic. It's a non-toxic option. Not sure how it holds up on polymer clay though. All the best to you. Thank you for your input & video.
Thank you so much! I've gotten to where I really like the 2 part epoxy. I'm like you, I always thought I was too impatient for it so I opted for the UV. I was also a bit intimidated by the mixing. Now, I'd take the 2 part any day! I get a MUCH nicer finish with the epoxy than I ever did with UV. It just looks smoother & it doesn't warp the clay pieces like the UV resin does. You're very welcome! A LOT of people have said in the comments that JDiction is really good. I haven't tried it though. I've just learned that I like the epoxy resin much better. I get such a better finish with epoxy. I think UV resin just isn't my jam 😂 especially after this experience!
@TrennaFercec thank you very much. Which one? The bangle that's coated with Deep Shine? Purple, blue & Green? I could definitely do a tutorial on that! Do you need a tutorial on the design itself, or how to make a bangle? I'm already planning to do a video on making bangle bracelet & collar necklace cores. I'm happy to do one on that particular design technique too, if that's what you want.
@@madebymellyjewelryif you have some of that UV resin left over, try an experiment. From what I understand you should be able to put a drop of purple dye in the resin. Not enough to change the color but it is supposed to counteract the yellow when it happens. I’m suggesting this to you because you are the first person I have come across who can exactly replicate the conditions that caused the yellowing. I also forgot to say, as heartbreaking as the yellowing was, your work was still really beautiful.
@@Oonagh72 I may try that. I've heard that before & several others have also mentioned it in the comments. & Thank you very much. I definitely love making my jewelry. It makes me so happy when others love wearing it just as much as I love making it ❤️
@TheVangogh57 yeah, the more they're exposed to uv light, the faster they yellow...which is why I don't like them. There's other reasons I don't like using it, but that's #1. Thank you so much for watching & leaving a comment 🥰
I had no idea that could happen if they sit in light.. How sad to lose your pieces like that :( I use nail rhinestone uv glue to glue the earring posts on.. I figured if it is meant to hold a crystal while washing dishes for a month then it would work for holding the posts better than e6000..
I personally never trust glue alone for my post (e6000 or otherwise)...but there again mine aren't just for personal use. I may do a video one do all about ways to attach posts & do experiments to see which way is the strongest. Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
That earring that you took out of your hear looked like bone china and I love that look. Thank you for so much information that you have packed into this video. I joined up because you were just that good and pretty cool as well. 😊 Ah honey, all that hard pain staking work and such beautiful pieces, totally ruined just by being in the sun. I feel so sorry for you having to sand them down. Don’t throw them out, something will come along that may solve that issue for you.
Thanks for sharing! Ug. It's absolutely gutting. I've had to trash so many expensive coasters w/in 4 months of creating them, even keeping them out of the sun! I've tried 5 well-known epoxy resins, too. And, realizing that the pieces customers purchase in good faith will amber...cringe.
Oh no 😭 I feel your pain!!! Based on recommendations in the comments, I decided to try the Let's Resin brand of epoxy. I've used it once, & while I have no idea how it will hold up against yellowing...I really enjoyed using it. It was very nice to work with. The Art Resin is definitely not holding up as well as I expected it to 🙄 Thanks for watching & commenting
It is truly heartbreaking. You are right. I’ve tried two different brands of UV resin. I think I’m ready to give up and leave all the surfaces matte, and just continue using the uv resin on the back. Although the neutral colour earrings are okay, I’ve noticed it’s the lighter colours that are really effected. 😢
Yes, even my Art Resin has started to yellow. Many, many people have suggested Let's Resin in the comments. I have some of it arriving today. I've gotten to where 90% of my designs don't require sealing, or they're textured so they look better without a sealer. But sometimes, I just like the glassy look of the resin...& my customers seem to like it too. I still have no interest in using UV resin unless I need it on a curved surface. Not only because of the yellowing, but the warping from the heat, & I just get an all around better finish with an epoxy resin. If I can't find an epoxy that holds up better against yellowing, I'll just stick with designs that don't need it. I hardly ever use paints, powders, etc anyway. I generally prefer to do all my artwork with just the colored clay. Although, sometimes it's fun to use those surface treatments. Its just a catch 22, I think 🤷 Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
@@madebymellyjewelry Uhm, WHY don't you just sand and buff instead of using resin? This gives you a deep sheen and you don't have to worry about yellowing anymore ...!
@@NessiesVideos I do sand & buff sometimes.... although it isn't always possible. A lot of the pieces in the video had additives to them that needed to be sealed & couldn't be sanded. I use many different finishing methods...just depends on the piece, what's in it, & the final look I'm going for. I just wanted to focus on the issues of using UV resin in this video. Thank you so much for watching & commenting ❤️
I can't tell you how helpful this was for me. I haven't used resin yet but have always wanted to and have a uv lamp ready to go but want to avoid major mistakes. I think i will try the Let's Resin brand and buy some more Flecto Varathane as an alternative which i have used in the past. Also is there a brand of gel polish you could recommend? I am unfamiliar with nail products. And some ppl use Kato liquid as a finish but I'm unclear as to whether that's a special product or just her transparent liquid. Do you know anything about that? Again thank you so very much for all your work making these tutes 👍👏✌️🫶😊
I want to try out the Let's Resin UV too. As far as gel polish brands...no. I have lots of different ones & have no idea which one I used on those beads. It's one of those things we'd just have to test out & see which ones work. Really though, gel top coat is probably a lot more expensive than UV resin...it's such a small amount. Kato liquid...yes, it's just the regular Kato clear liquid clay. I've tried it. I'm not a fan. That's just personal preference. It's finicky & it doesn't seem very durable to me as a finish. It seems to dent & scratch easily, but that could just be user error. I much prefer texture, sanding & buffing, or resin. I feel like I didn't help much here 😂 You can always comment or just message me if you have more questions 😃 Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
@madebymellyjewelry you've helped a lot! Don't sell yourself short...I too prefer sanding and buffing to a glass like shine but some things I just can't sand, like certain leafing applications etc. Which Is why I was wanting to try resin. All the other artists seem to rave about the let's resin brand over all others so I'll give it a go. Btw, been claying since the early 90s, I remember using Future floor wax as a finish, which worked great unless it got wet, then would turn a milky white on the surface of your clay! Lol
i dont like the yellowing either so am using depend iq uv nail gel. so far no probs apart from curing 3d pieces. i am in new zealand though but purchased the gel from the farmers if you have that dept store where you are
this could be the dye in the clay, it looks like alcohol inks fading. Again, JDictions I have no problem with and I just finished a show where all my UV resin was sitting directly in sun. also, there are a lot of 2part resins out there that do the same thing. Also, one other thing to check for, UV you can't but 2 part you can, a resin that has been sitting on the shelf or had fluctuations in temp will yellow immediately.
No, I didn't use alcohol inks on any of them. They're all clay... except for the very last piece that has a bit of acrylic paint. I didn't even own alcohol inks at that time...now, I've had them a long time & still haven't used them. 😂 A lot of people have mentioned the Jdiction brand, but I haven't tried it. Still, it will yellow eventually...it just may take it a really long time. Any resin will....that's just resin. I love the way the resin looks, but I'm trying not to use it unless I actually need it. Most of the pieces in the video didn't actually need it...I just used it because I liked the look. Thanks for watching 💗
Any resin left out in sunlight will yellow very quickly, unfortunately... Makes no difference what the brand is, being in strong sunlight continuously like that only accelerates the process. I even tell my clients if they're eg going to a wedding, to watch the amount of time they're in sunlight while wearing (non-UV) resined jewellery. For that reason, outdoor fairs/stalls for any resined work - jewellery or art - is a no-no, I'm afraid. I'm so sorry your lovely stock got ruined. With older art pieces of mine that have deteriorated/yellowed, I run a light flood-coat tinted lilac over the top, which definitely helps. 💜
Hi 👋 I'm so happy you subscribed!!! The resins I used were just the Chinese ones from Amazon that a lot of people use. Two of them are pictured on the thumbnail, but there's also a couple of more that I used. I've never tried Jdiction...but a LOT of people in the comments have recommended it....along with the Let's Resin brand ❤️
It's such a shame that these pieces yellowed so quickly. They were all beautifully designed, so it would be a lot of time and effort out the window! I actually liked the matt pieces more. Good luck with finding the right resin that won't yellow as quickly. All you can do is continue testing, until you find the right one for the job!
Oh Hun let me save you the time n headache of fighting with your resin... I started with Art resin and I was paying the $400 for 2 gallons every like 6 months because I do resin pieces not clay. I had so many of my pieces yellow. I thought maybe because I liked alcohol inks that were green blue n purple that did it. So I incased some pictures n other items in clear. I made a memorial piece of my sister that passed. Everything yellowed. So I did research on RUclips because I don't want people tell me what's good (sponsorships) I wanted to see it for myself. The let's resin is the most clear. Since I switched everything has been so much better. I buy the two part epoxy resin. It's thinner also so less fighting to stir it up. (I make larger batches) it's clear, less bubbles, it stays clear for longer. I haven't had nothing turn yellow since. I'll admit I haven't had nothing in direct sunlight because I had no reason to but I had things in windows n haven't had no problems. It's also cheaper than art resin so you can buy a small batch n put it over so white baked polymer clay n test it before you use it in pieces you put all that effort into. I'm not one to just go with the flow cuz people say but since I bought it I have truly seen a huge difference first hand. I believed art resin at first n bought it because they said it's safe to use, it's food safe, it's non yellowing etc but I've lost a lot due to yellowing n tbh it's not safe to be around it gave me splitting headaches mixing so I had to get a respirator to use it too so that's 2 out of three I found to not be true. You're welcome to continue to do what you want but I thought I'd save you from the headache n hassle. There's a RUclipsr that shows testing done n I'll link it too ruclips.net/video/-wS_wJ6pvP0/видео.htmlsi=6S_FV3ARD2vnRpd0 I hope this helps...
Yes, SO many people have recommended Let's Resin & Jdiction. I'm going to try those next. Some of my pieces with Art Resin are starting to yellow the tiniest bit. Thanks for watching & thanks for commenting ❤️
@@madebymellyjewelry it's not a problem... I just know how heart broken I was when I believed it wasn't gonna yellow n I don't know bout you but when I remake a piece I never get it the same so I was really sad to throw out so many of my pieces. Not all but alot. Id rather help someone so they don't have the same problem. To me there's nothing more devastating than to be proud of your work n to have it ruined. I don't work with clay I learned about it because I wanted too n mine gets too soft to fiddle with. But I do work with different resins now so I just really wanted to help because I know the feeling. I heard good about Jdiction as well but I think that's a UK thing n I'm in America. Whatever you choose good luck I wish you well. I've made jewelry too n I really like your pieces too as one jewelry maker to another...
From what I understand, uv resin yellows over time, that's unfortunate, but the same problem happens with normal resin too... Some of my pieces yellowed over time and others didn't.. .I use Gedeo.
Yes, Absolutely! Happens with ANY resin eventually. UV resins just tend to yellow sooner because of the UV activators needed to cure them. Unfortunately, it's just one of those things...there's always good with bad 🫤 Thanks for watching 😊
@Lotusflower970 hi 👋 Thanks for watching & commenting! So, it honestly just depends on the brand of resin & how much sun exposure it has. Like I said I had some pieces that yellowed pretty badly in just 1 or 2 days...but I had them outdoors at art shows. It wouldn't happen that quickly in just normal everyday use. However it will happen eventually. There's really no way to know the exact amount of time. So many factors determine that, such as brand, how much sun exposure, thickness, etc. I think even the temperature in which it's stored can factor into the yellowing. I wish I had a definitive answer, but unfortunately the best I can do is...it can happen in a few days, or it may take years 🫤
I wouldn't mind it on the blue ones AS MUCH, if it weren't for the fact that you can see the original color around the edge of the pieces. Yes, it was extremely frustrating! Thank you for watching & for your comment 💗
I’m so sick of getting sticky UV resin that doesn’t cure well…. Or make things to find them a murky yellow just months later. No more UV resin for me either! Only Jdiction for me.
YES!!!! Everyone uses UV like it's the greatest thing ever...it's NOT. I think a lot of people start out using UV resin just because it seems easier & less intimidating than an epoxy...that's why I started with UV, anyway. So...tell me....what is this Jdiction you speak of???? Thanks for watching & commenting...I'll hope you'll subscribe ❤️
Ok, so I see that Jdiction is a brand of resin. Ive never heard of it. I'm assuming you use their 2 part epoxy? I'm definitely going to watch some videos on it, & i may try that one. How long have you used it? Have you had any yellowing yet at all? Thanks for mentioning it 😉
Jdiction does a UV resin and I have no troubles with it at all, for curing, For curing problems, UV has to be cured on the front and the back in transparent molds, and don't touch for 5 min or so! hope that helps. and the only yellowing I get is from cheaper UV resin, never JDiction. Their high viscosity is the best I have ever used. My stuff sits in the sun at shows.
Many people don't realize that a lot of UV resin is depending on the wattage of the lamp that are using, many of the Brand's out today require at least 36 w. It also requires using clear or transparent bold and curing on both sides before diemolding and also working very small thin layer... Many people approach using UV resin like epoxy and try to for thicker quarter inch pieces and often wonder why it doesn't are well and warps. Let's resin and JDiction both make outstanding Cuvee resins make outstanding UV resin that yours nicely and will not yellow quickly.
Did this actually happen to you? I'm wondering if the resin wasn't mixed properly? Or if someone just told you this, perhaps they were misinformed? LOTS of people have used epoxy with polymer clay for years with no problems. I have pieces that I coated with the Art Resin epoxy & they're well over a year old. So, it didn't happen with my resin. Please let me know if you have experienced this first hand, & if so, what resin you used. Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
Well, there's several things you can use instead. It all depends on the look you're going for. For the same look, a 2 part epoxy resin can be used. Liquid polymer clay can look similar to resin. Water based varnishes can be used, like varathane. There are special varnishes for polymer clay made by the clay companies. Renaissance Wax is another good choice. One more thing that I know of is floor wax. Like Pledge Revive It. The only thing with it is that you have to be careful with isopropyl alcohol...it will remove the floor wax. Thanks for watching & commenting ❤️
I have used different resins, but mainly the two that are pictured in the thumbnail. I don't know that they really have a brand name. Just the Chinese resin from Amazon. One for sure, is the bottle with blue, green, & yellow little flowers that you see SO MANY polymer clay artist using. That's the one that yellowed the worst for me.
Wow, so many artist use so resin on so many projects. Yet, you are the first to talk about this issue. I have uv resin on the shelf but never used it because I am always afraid of doing something wrong and ruining my piece. Now, I may not Ever use it. Thanks for sharing, Melly. I'm sorry this happened to you.
Well Wendy, you don't have to be afraid to use it...it just all depends on what you're using it for. I think it probably somewhat depends on the brand, too. I don't know...I just wanted people to see what CAN happen. Any resin will yellow over time...just some do it faster than others. I've gotten to where I just generally try to not use additives that require sealing. If I do need to seal a project, I will try to use a different type of sealer. Sometimes though, I just like that glassy look that resin gives...in that case I use an epoxy resin. As with most things in life, you have to take the good & the bad. 🫤 Thanks for watching 😘
@@aimeemichaud7826 thanks! A lot of people have recommended that one...& let's resin too. I've switched to using the Let's Resin epoxy & I really like it. All the colors in the examples were just the colors of the clay. Some of them had a tiny bit of acrylic paint, but none of them had alcohol inks or any type of pigments. 😁

The whole RESIN discussion should start with one critical question. Knowing you're only going to use this thing you made for a certain amount of time, how much longer would it sit in a landfill before going back to the Earth? Or ask yourself, with 144 tons of new plastic waste being produced in the USA every year, just how much of that land-fill space do you want to waste on hobbies? 😢😢😢. Your grandkids are the ones who will be dealing with the plastic or 'resin' 'polymer ANYTHING'; PROBLEM. It will be your families problem, not mine. Plastic is here forever, once you mix it up. 😢😢😢
I make & design quality jewelry pieces that will last my customers MANY, MANY years. What I do is not a "HOBBY". What I do is art, and it's a business. That art & business are how I make my living. This video was not about landfills, waste, etc. This video was intended to educate other artist & hobbyist what can happen with some UV resins that MANY people use. Last but not least...it will NOT be my grandchildren's, nor their grandchildren's "problem" because they don't & will never exist, because I was never able to have children....so thanks very much for insulting my art & then stabbing a knife in a sore spot. the yellowed… are still very nice.
I can't believe I forgot this. From watching restoration vids, it looks like hydrogen proxcide and UV light can reverse yellowing in plastic. But I'm not sure if anyone has tested this with resin.
@@kouusa hmmm... peroxide & UV light? Interesting 🤔

@@sierrahjmartinez6703 exactly...blue or purple cancel out yellow.
Hi 👋
I've heard that too...or violet. It won't really stop it from yellowing so much as disguise it (I think so, anyway).
No it wasn't just a bad batch of resin, these pieces were made at different times with different brands, & I also had different bottles from each of those brands purchased at different times...hope that made sense. It's really late for me 😆

Hi 👋
No, they were using different brands of UV Resin. If you could see them in person it's more prominent & also not just the white. So, I don't think the brand of clay would make a difference, really...but who knows? 😆
I also didn't use any pigments or alcohol inks & things...just clay for the most part. Some of them have metal leaf, & some have a bit of acrylic paint...but nothing that should affect the resin.

Thank you for sharing. You will help a lot of people with this. I am sorry though for what happened to your beautiful jewelry.

art resin is actually the worst. there are many artist that tested many different brands and had them outside for 6 months. Art Resin was very yellow. Jdiction is the best, doesn't yellow and the UV resin works great. i live in AZ and have my pieces in the window, and they have done great.
Cool. Thanks for the info...& Thanks for watching 😊
In all the test videos that I watched people do...the art resin did great. Really, the only way to know is to try it out for yourself 💗
Thank you very much 😊
I'm pretty sure that Lisa's Resin will yellow also.
Yes, they All will yellow eventually. Just some faster than others.
Thanks for watching 😊
Hopefully the resin you used will hold up well over time ❤️❤️❤️

I really like the way that the Deep Shine resist yellowing, but I struggle to get a good smooth finish with it. The bangle in the video, I had to apply & sand & reapply a few times to get a really nice finish. All of them have advantages & disadvantages, I guess. Nothing is perfect 🤷
So the DeepShine UV Resin from TinyPandora doesn't yellow? Did you test it?

The Deep Shine is guaranteed not to yellow & I sincerely trust Teressa Salgado. If she says it doesn't...I definitely take her at her word. Nothing I've used it on has yellowed so far. However, I still haven't done an actual test, where I put it on white clay & set it out in the sun for a few weeks or months.

How long jdiction UV resin resist to yellowing?
I've never experienced that in the two years I was doing outdoor events in the direct sunlight with clear items made from uv resin. Maybe it was just the brand I was using.

I'm going to start with the UV..... then if I decide I like it I'll change it up to the other resin. I am getting the lets resin one.
It doesn't have that depth that resin does...resin can almost make it look like your clay is under glass 😍
Thank you for watching & commenting ❤️
Use glass varnish instead, it's like resin in strength and shine but it's basically gloss varnish that's super clear and easier to apply on small jewellery pieces.
@@chucky6367 yes I use gloss varnish sometimes....just depends on the piece. Floor wax can also be used on polymer clay. My very 1st piece, (a bangle bracelet) I used floor wax & it still looks beautiful after several years 😄

I wonder, is there possibility to use two part epoxy resin for coating 3D objects such as flowers when working in thin layers?
@@sabinalutterova1520 hi 👋
Ya know, that's a good question, but I don't think you could.
The art Resin takes a long time to cure doesn't it? What was the brand of UV resin you used?
I don't really wanna find out 🤣
Thanks for watching & dropping a comment ❤️
Hi! Super new to jewelry making. Is the gel polish you mentioned like…the gel polish where you put your nails under a UV light?
Hi 👋
Yes, I'm talking about UV gel polish top coat.
Beautiful work. I only put uv resin on earring backs. I dislike Just resin it not only yellows it pulls away from sides.😢
Thank you.

What’s the best kind of earring post and necklace chains to use that don’t get dark or change colors or fade

Really?....that doesn't seem to be the popular opinion in the comments here. It's the only 2 part epoxy I've ever used. I like it. One thing is that I love the flexibility of it.
Its just a catch 22, I think 🤷

I feel like I didn't help much here 😂
You can always comment or just message me if you have more questions 😃

@madebymellyjewelry you've helped a lot! Don't sell yourself short...I too prefer sanding and buffing to a glass like shine but some things I just can't sand, like certain leafing applications etc. Which Is why I was wanting to try resin. All the other artists seem to rave about the let's resin brand over all others so I'll give it a go. Btw, been claying since the early 90s, I remember using Future floor wax as a finish, which worked great unless it got wet, then would turn a milky white on the surface of your clay! Lol
@sweetpealee056 I use the floor wax sometimes too!

this could be the dye in the clay, it looks like alcohol inks fading.
A lot of people have mentioned the Jdiction brand, but I haven't tried it.
Thank you 😊

Hi 👋
I'm so happy you subscribed!!!
If needed, you can message me on FB & I'll send you links for all of the ones I've ordered from Amazon.

There's a RUclipsr that shows testing done n I'll link it too

Unfortunately, it's just one of those things...there's always good with bad 🫤
Thanks for watching 😊
@Lotusflower970 hi 👋 Thanks for watching & commenting!
So, it honestly just depends on the brand of resin & how much sun exposure it has. Like I said I had some pieces that yellowed pretty badly in just 1 or 2 days...but I had them outdoors at art shows. It wouldn't happen that quickly in just normal everyday use. However it will happen eventually.
There's really no way to know the exact amount of time. So many factors determine that, such as brand, how much sun exposure, thickness, etc. I think even the temperature in which it's stored can factor into the yellowing.
I wish I had a definitive answer, but unfortunately the best I can do is...it can happen in a few days, or it may take years 🫤
You make so many gorgeous designs. I hope you can find something to work for you. 😊💖
Thank you very much. I really appreciate that.

What can we use ?
Sand and buff. It's that simple.
I don't mind it on the blue ones ,it makes them look even more like real turquoise.I get your point though - it must be very frustrating!
I wouldn't mind it on the blue ones AS MUCH, if it weren't for the fact that you can see the original color around the edge of the pieces.
Yes, it was extremely frustrating!

@@CraftTimeStudio thanks. I'm glad you found it helpful 😊
2 part resin reacts badly over time with polymer clay. After a few months, it breaks down and the piece becomes sticky
So what can one use? 😮
@@madebymellyjewelry thank you so much for that information. Have a good day.

What resin was you using so I don’t buy it
I have used different resins, but mainly the two that are pictured in the thumbnail. I don't know that they really have a brand name. Just the Chinese resin from Amazon.
One for sure, is the bottle with blue, green, & yellow little flowers that you see SO MANY polymer clay artist using. That's the one that yellowed the worst for me.
I've been using the non toxic food Grade resin.yes that's the one I use!! 😅
Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching 😘

The whole RESIN discussion should start with one critical question. Knowing you're only going to use this thing you made for a certain amount of time, how much longer would it sit in a landfill before going back to the Earth? Or ask yourself, with 144 tons of new plastic waste being produced in the USA every year, just how much of that land-fill space do you want to waste on hobbies? 😢😢😢.
