Hey Dan, I do a similar thing when putting in the wholes for my bolts. Only difference is I do all 4 then use the truck to push all 4 through at once. Anyways great content as always
I’ve been skating for so long I really appreciate all the little details you’re giving. They’re all good. For example I really agree that you should remove the excess small circle of grip from the truckbolt hole. Next board setup I will try popping the griptape holes from the bottom of the deck and I will try cutting my grip without scraping a guide cutting line
For anyone who is curious on a good bearing lube I recommend Tri-Flow lubricant it’s meant for bike chains and it has Teflon which is really good for metal and it’s like $6 for a bottle
@@Dylan_Alpha_LoneKing you do know that’s just a brand right? There’s no such thing as just for skateboards all water resistant lubricants are the same chemically but what makes triflow effective is it has Teflon a substance with no resistance plus it keeps the metal preserved
Before you apply the grip tape, rub the rough side of tape on the wood surface. This will give the adhesive grooves to grip to. Clean the dust/debris off before applying. One applied, turn board on the side and use a zippo to heat the grip tape. Don't melt it, just heat it up. This will "activate" the glue. Do it in small areas and press the tape into the board. Should give you the best adherence
When you cut the griptape flip them so the two clean factory edges are show on the deck. Or tack the grip on both tail and nose then press from the middle out to easily have one sheet.
Another advantage Mob has over Jessup: it cuts really nicely. I always sand down the edges before cutting my griptape because I used to skate Jessup and that shit is so thin it just rips if you try to cut it without sanding it down first, and I just got used to the process. But Mob is thicker, and much easier to cut regardless of prep.
I like your insight man. 🤙always appreciate anything you have to offer. I skate rails too. So the bit on snipping the ends I find great. I'll definitely try that. 🤙🤘
Anti Hero makes some awesome big nosed boards . Their Big Meanie eagle deck is what I was riding until I couldn't anymore . It was the only board I could find that had the early 90s shape but also moden mix.
I found this amazing fishtail deck from Dogtown that has insane concave and it has a nice curved nose with that slightly square shape. Perfect cruiser. Great video, Dan! (Who the hell would dislike this? Grip tape shaver enthusiasts?)
Dan, would you pleaseeeeeeeee be able to do another video on board set ups? I'm just getting back into skating again and am going thru some board madness. Im torn betwee size of deck, size of wheels, and truck brand.... im lost. Now that I am older, all of these differnt components are mentally affecting me, as weird as that sounds.
I do the shaving because it removes the grit that's hard to cut trough and also gives me very clean area that follows the contour of the board and knife follows that easier... so the cut looks more clean :)
I tell you a little trick when gripping the whole sheet as you peel back the paper cut half the paper off so the griptape is now half sticky half not sticky. This will make it easier to lineup since half of it will not be sticky you can use that half to lineup on the skateboard perfectly while holding up the sticky part once you have it lined up press down the sticky part and then pick up the other non sticky part while peeling back like a band-aid the paper
If I'm using a hand drill or one's in reach, I use it and a phillips bit to clean out the holes. Helps reduce the potential twisting of the grip tape under the bolt heads.
All the boards had deck rails in the 80s , I used to see kids riding these Nash completes from k-mart that had rails , skid plate and nosebone . the was neon green comedy
I used to grip over my bolts so I wouldn't think about where my foot was just where I was comfortable setting up for a trick. I would leave a sliver off heel side of tail. New hardware a must though.
You could also put a little piece of electric or duct tape over the hole of the stripped screw, so when you use the screwdriver..it has some grip to turn while you're holding down the nut with the other tool..and vise versa!!
I used to skate these random shop brand bearings and they were so much better than any big brand, high priced bearings I've ever tried. Rolled better and lasted way longer than any others I came across and they were cheap too, probably equates to around $30 if even that.
It’s been a few years since I’ve had mob grip and live in KY, mob would always get bubbles or try to peel in the winter time. I ride exclusively jessup
you really shouldnt be using jessup... first make sure you have a flat sheet of grip not rolled at all, that will make it 10x easier not to get air bubbles... second you need to take your bottom sheet from the grip and put it ontop of the grip and pound the shit outta it, or just step on it, then score it, then cut it out, then use excess grip to sand down the sides... you will never ever have air bubbles in mob grip doing this, ive lived in cold places like WA state and never had this problem before with mob, especially the air bubbles, mob has special perforated grip that literally doesnt allow for air bubbles unless you fucked it up, even at that take a razor blade cut through it and push it down if you do get air bubbles, not hard to deal with... skate the best
@@gawdlyinhale4203 I actually just got mob on my setup yesterday, I figured I should try it because it’s been YEARS. Thank you for the advice! Best of skating to you as well.
The "kinda squared off shape" you described makes me think of Tum Yeto, at least from a few years back. I had a phase of only skating Foundation and Toy Machine, and they always seemed to have a a lot of shapes with that. Alien Workshop had a bunch too, I forgot who that is though... DNA maybe? But I feel ya, on that semi-squared shape as I swore by that for years. Not sponsored or anything anymore, so I just kind of try out different brands with different shapes now.
Pop your shields off..poor a little Windex in a cup..put your bearings in..leave them in for 30 minutes...dump out Windex..dry them real good with a paper towel..put them back in the wheels...spin test...good as new!! 🤘
I also hit it with my truck with the bolt to poke holes but it can make a mess of the grip tape and rip chucks out I always push down two fingers over each hole on the other side as I hit the bolt like your holding a cigarette so as the bolt comes though between your fingers it won't push the grip off since your applying pressure around the hole it will just pop a clean hole
I used to think Black Magic grip tape was the best until I took your advice about MOB. There I go showing my age again lol. I use the 159’s as well but swapped out the bushings for the Bones. No more blow out problems!
Being from the East Coast and skating 20 years plus As long as you grip the board indoors and leave it inside overnight the next day it should be fine to ride no grip tape falling off
I've skated bones bearings a lot, but I went for some Bronson raws last time and I have a new favorite. You'd think they would need to be cleaned frequently with them being open, but they run dry so dirt isn't attracted. I haven't cleaned them in at least six months and they are still amazing. Love the sound too.
I’m using the Bronsons that are covered and I think they’re pretty rad. Can’t tell too much of a different between those and the big balls though. We’ll see how easy it cleans when needed and if it blows out like the big balls did.
dan should make an edit of all his silly quirky tricks and spots like the stuff daewon posts on instaham, way more enjoyable to watch than dudes thrashing tres down 15 stairs imho. i think he could make something really special and it would do really well.
also get swiss ceramics if your really worried about bearings.. its the most expensive bearing but it literally lasts 12+ years take my word for it i just broke mine and bought another one
the actual original reason for scraping the edges of the griptape before cutting, is to remove the grit from it so that you can cut it with the razor and it doesn't kill the blade with each grip job.
I've always been a fan of Jessup Grip, I recently tried MOB Grip but like you said it's grippy as fuck. I personally like Grip that isn't too grippy, my reasoning for this is I fractured a bone in my foot and tore the ligaments of my ankle and ever since then it hurts a bit to flick tricks with my right foot(goofy skater) unless I'm wearing compression ankle braces/socks and having grip with less traction results in less strain on my tendons while flicking. Also, a bonus of using grip that isn't quite as coarse or rough, is that it won't hastily wear through your shoes. When I was a kid, I used to wear holes in my shoes to the point that all my socks had holes in the toe, entirely from doing flip tricks. There's nothing worse, than going to do a kickflip and tearing your big toenail on griptape lol
I have this weird thing when I do nollie tricks I flip my board backwards so I still skate off the tail so I got a twin tail board with all black grip. I don’t have to flip my board around and I wear my nose and tail instead of using my tail for everything
there is 3 reasons to scoring your grip guys... the first is to avoid delamination of the grip, the second is to make sure that you get an even cut on your grip, if you fuck up and cut too far out that grip can indeed snag your shoe and ruin a flip trick, the wood on the absolute edge counts for something, and third it does make it easier to cut, overall makes it look better and you can cut it out faster.. just sayin
My mob clear grip got smooth really quickly I don't know if it's because I street skate or got it wet I don't remember getting it wet but I don't know why it got smooth so quick
alexis sablone board from wknd boards has a bigger nose and slightly squared off nose and tail its looks really weird for me at first glance but i really like the deck
Fuck that, who cares if you screw the grip tape up. I do it all the time and I'm PROUD of my shit grip tape jobs! I like a little hanging off the nose or maybe sometimes on the side. It's the best :) But I hear yeah, making sure you're grip is covering the whole board is such a pain. Straightforward I love these setup videos. You could probably do one every two weeks and I'd watch it.
Only reason i've stayed away from Powell Swiss was because i've had boards go in the Chicago river and also confiscated from the cops. People get jacked for boards too and not to mention Skateboarding in a nutshell is destroying your skateboard so how much more expensive then it needs to be am i going to get.
61 years old, skating since2019, can't Ollie yet... Straightforward approach. No bullshit. I like it.
can you ollie yet?
I love dans videos because it feels like having a skate homie who knows his shit more than being entertained by a skate video.

For anyone who is curious on a good bearing lube I recommend Tri-Flow lubricant it’s meant for bike chains and it has Teflon which is really good for metal and it’s like $6 for a bottle
Or you could use *Bones Speed Cream* Racing Formula, which is specifically made for skateboarding
What about gun oil

who has problems with grip falling off? buy better grip if so..
I started skating deck rails and immediately started getting better I think they help for stability so much rad video tootles
It's so nice to be able to lock into lipslides without the concave making your deck roll on the rail! 🛹
When you cut the griptape flip them so the two clean factory edges are show on the deck. Or tack the grip on both tail and nose then press from the middle out to easily have one sheet.
It annoys me few shops know that

Venture Black Shadow trucks? 🤔

there's more than one reason. and it coming up is more imortant than the sharpness of ur razor

Which acid wheel formula? The 99 or 103 or whatever?

took a big chunk out of my spitfires doing a slappy front crook today, probably not the wheels fault but I’ll try acid chemical co next lol
The Santa Cruz Everslick has the shape you described. I Have an 8.0
What hardness are the wheels? Thought about trying acid co
Did you ever find out. On this video and slightly newer one, he doesn't mention it. I'm assuming 99A or 101A.
Polar, do a squarish nose. Worth a look!
I use to spend a fortune on custom decks when I skated. My setups were worth over £150 and that was nearly 20 years ago. Always had a pro deck.
They are even more expensive now for a quality setup it will cost about 215$
I think scraping the edges helps to rub off some of the sand so it cuts easier
Hey Dan love the content and uh for your like board shape i ride doom sayers boards it has exactly the nose ur talking abt
I do the same thing when I’m installing my hardware. Lol
thoughts on bones' big balls bearings vs super reds? ive found them to be far better than black reds but not sure how they compare to super reds
Swiss 6 all day
Weird thing I've always done is not tighten hardware more than 1 full turn past finger tight. No idea why but for 17 years that's how I've done it.

What I wonder is... If you could just swap the bushings front to back, the front will become back and vice versa? I always have my trucks marked tho
is their any way to rethread my trucks without a rethreading tool?
