  • This is an amazing performance of the band in their prime from 1974 at the Texas Opry House. Each member has their own spotlight during the show at one point or another.
Bobbie Nelson is no where to be seen in this footage - perhaps the only living man to know the answer on why she was absent that night is Willie himself.
About half way through the show, Sammi Smith joins the band on stage for a quick duet. After they preform "Georgia on a Fast Train" Willie and Sammi share a kiss at 47:39:). Willie tells her to not go too far - as she’ll be coming back to to sing her hit “Help Me Make it Through the Night.” But unfortunately, that footage has been lost to history.
How can that be, you ask? I wondered the same thing. Someone tracked down Bill Young, who was in charge of the television programming back then. He explained that Willie Nelson's episode of Opry House was a 90-minute show. Back in those days, you would sometimes film on a 65-minute tape and then a 30 minute tape and marry the two together where the overlap occurs. In preparing to put the series together for KERA’s 50th, Bill says he and his staff turned the building over searching for that second tape to no avail.
So Smith’s performance, plus a special appearance by Jerry Jeff Walker to sing “Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother,” are lost to history.
Gone to that great television in the sky. Luckily we hung on to the first hour of this program.
I hope you enjoy as much as I did:)!

Grateful I had a brother-in-law stationed in Texas who turned us on to Willie at just about this point in time. We felt like we were on to something that most folks didn’t know: Willie is one of those great artists who are ahead of their time. Timeless

I was out of the loop on the Texas music revival scene of outlaws with Willie and Waylon and the boys. Was it this era when they were so wild? Well, wild as can be - I remember sitting in this sleazy honkey tonk in 78 and "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille," was every other song. Willie didnt' do it, but it reminds me of hm....then there was the sad songs and the bad songs and blue eyes crying in the rain as they whooped it up in Lubbock Texas, ain't nobody feeling no pain -- with Willy, Waylon and the Boys. Well, Steve Earl wasn't doing so hot -- but I was in my late teens.... I was more interested in the Neil and the Stones. -- but I always loved Willie --- what a testament to hard but good living.

they said on his birthday special the other night that he has outlived all his band mates.....sad -- but there were plenty to celebrate with him being 90 at Hollywood Bowl. My mother is 90. It is not easy for anyone. You have do to a. lot of non complaining and fake smiling --- my grandfather who lived to be 97, kept saying at about 96 - "You DO NOT want to live this long." I won't. Happy Birthday Willie, it's a miracle you did -- but you were never into the hard stuff much and you must have genes. I hope Lucas lives that long -- though I won't be around to see it. He is a perfect example of family caring for family in a low key but significant way. He said he only had one rule growing up: "Just don't be an asshole." -- good advice -- and he surely is. not....JMHO thanks.

I like still looking at Willey, he reminds me of my Dad but Dad looked some like Willie too. My Dads frist cousin Willie is, but my Dad hurt his back in road a limb from a tree broke with him. My Aunt Emilee told Willie when they were 9/10 years ol joe broke his back they think but want tell Dad so Willie played what he was learning on his guitar be4 they moved to texas. Dad told me the story Aunt Eermilee told it to me frist. Willie said he sure did instead of playing. 😊. My Dads mother was a Smothers who married into Merriman family.
