Willie Nelson’s 1974 performance at KLRN wasn’t just a great concert. It was a historical moment. It’s from 1975, the year Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” hit number one, the king of western swing, Bob Wills, passed away, and Canada’s K.D. Lang wrote her first song at the age of 14. It was also the year the VHS tape was invented in Japan, and Captain & Tennille won a Grammy for “Love Will Keep Us Together.” And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what was happening in music that year. Very historical moment in history which Willie began to get exposure which after he left Nashville he went back to Texas put a new band together which he pretty began to find his trademark sound and never looked back.

This is some peak 70s drunken shenanigans. My favorite scene is wasted Leon Russel introducing Doug Kershaw wearing that incredible suit killing it on the fiddle... while Leon Russel wanders around on stage. I hope this stays on RUclips, it's one of my favorite things to watch on the 4th.

Never been a first commenter before. Would love to have been there in 74. The last show ever at South Park Meadows Austin was a Willie 4th. I got lucky that night and got dropped off the next morning on the 35 feeder. Jumped the fence and my truck was right in the very center of the field was the last vehicle ever park there. Got to go to 8 picnics. Really enjoying listening to this one on the 4th !

Thanks so much for posting this film on RUclips! I'd always heard it's a fantastic concert film and I've always wanted to see it. I just wish I'd been old enough to go to Willie's picnics in those days. (I was only 10 in 1974. 😞)

If you went to a Willie concert back in those days you damn sure got your money's worth! Saw him several times in the late 70s and 80s!
