Second of all if you’ve read any history about the Democratic Party before the New Deal you’d know they were more conservative than the Republicans, especially in the South. The two party system didn’t become solidly conservative vs liberal/progressive until the 60s post-Goldwater. Both republicans and democrats were progressive in some sense starting in the Progressive era. That ended with Goldwater conservatism and the reactionary Nixon administration during the 60s and 70s. Just about every Republican president from Lincoln to Calvin Coolidge would be considered a liberal and not be a Republican by today’s standards. A life-long elder Republican statesman on Capitol Hill could even tell you that. And for the record, what do you make of Southern Republicans who continue to wave the Confederate Flag throughout the South? I’m sure the Republican forefathers who fought against the Confederacy would disapprove of such behavior and call them traitors for doing so. That in and of itself is enough proof that the Republican Party has changed tone since its founding.
